DOUBLE DECKER LUXURY VERSION

T he Belgian operator RC Travel took delivery of the first VDL Futura FDD2 double-decker. The

newly developed upper-deck floor made of lightwei-ght sandwich material has made it possible to achieve a generous 1.86 m. of standing height on the lower deck. A true innovation is the improvement of the dri-ver’s upward viewing angle, achieved by sloping the floor of the upper deck upwards at the windscreen. This gives the feeling of having plenty of space and an optimal view. Light weight plus a fuel-efficient powertrain equals financial benefit for the coach operator. The Futura FDD2 for RC Travel is a business class version for luxurious long-distance travel. The vehicle is fitted with 48 VDL Class 600 luxury seats in a 2+1 arrangement, two special hostess seats and an extra sleeping area for the hostess. Each seat has its own 220 volt socket and USB port. The multimedia system offers the passenger a choice of various music channels and 50 different films. The fully furnished and fully equipped kitchen provides everything needed to provide meals and refreshments. •

A FLEET WITH THE STAR

The Setra ComfortClass 500 series has reached a new milestone: the 2500th vehicle delivered. The landmark

coach is an S 516 MD delivered to Kowatsch Nfg. GmbH based in Villach, Austria. The vehicle is fitted with 53 se-ats, bi-xenon headlamps, on-board toilet, panoramic came-ra, video system and the latest in safety assistance systems (Lane Assistant, Adaptive Cruise Control with Active Brake Assist). The ComfortClass 500 series was launched in 2012 while the S 516 MD has been part of this series since autumn 2014. It’s 13.1 metre long with a reduced base frame and a height of 3.56 metres. The two-axle coach can be used as a shuttle, crewbus or for short weekend trips as well as for journeys with less luggage. •

S cania will soon launch the world’s first Euro 6 dou-ble-deck gas-powered bus. Developed by Scania and

assembled in the United Kingdom by Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and Vehicle Integration Limited, the vehicle recently arrived at the Port of Gothenburg befo-re being driven more than 400 kilometres to the Scania Technical Centre in Södertälje. The bus was developed

in response to customer demand, after the success of Scania’s single-deck model in the UK. “A major challenge in developing the product was modifying the fuel system to ensure that the bus offers an acceptable range for operators”, explains Mark Oliver, Bus and Coach Fleet Sales Manager for Scania Great Britain. After the two months of tests the vehicle will be delivered to the British market, later this year. The first order for five double-deck buses has been confirmed by Reading Buses, which already runs a fleet of 34 Scania single-deck gas buses and was the first UK operator to begin running the single-deck variant in 2013.•

VDL Bus & Coach is collaborating with Team FAST from Eindhoven University on the development of a bus using formic acid as liquid energy carrier

ENOUGHFORMIC ACID TO GO AROUNDYES, formic acid. This colorless and

pungent liquid was obtained for the first time in 1670 by distilling ants (to whom it owes the name). A substance that also occurs in nature and that is used for va-rious applications.Team FAST from Ein-dhoven University of Technology, in the Netherlands, has made a promising discovery regarding the formic acid: the ability to use it as liquid energy car-rier. Team FAST consi-sting of Dutch students has discovered a way to quickly and efficiently transform hydrogen into liquid formic acid and back again into hydrogen. A vehicle fit-ted with a hydrogen fuel cell and an electric engine will be filled up in quick and effective way. The advantage compared to the use of hydrogen as fuel is that the storage of formic acid is much easier and safer because it does not need to be done at high pressures and low temperatures. In addition, the weights in the vehicle are limited, the the range is increased and the costs are finally reduced.

Last January, Team FAST presented a model car (about one metre long) driving on formic acid that could travel up to 500 km on a full tank. The only emissions are water and car-bon dioxide; although the latter should not

be taken into conside-ration as formic acid is produced using CO2 that is captured in the atmosphere making the whole process ‘carbon-neutral’.The next step is a concept bus the Team FAST is working on in collaboration with VDL Bus & Coach. The bus that will become the

world’s first formic acid-powered bus is a VDL Citea Electric in a length of 12 me-tres. The modular construction of the Citea range makes it possible to choose from va-rious electric drive systems, battery packs and charging systems. The modular design also facilitates the necessary adaptations for driving on formic acid, without conse-quences on accessibility, interior layout or comfort. The presentation is expected in the course of 2016. • More articles about VDL Bus & Coach: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/529/articoli-costruttore-europa

In Pretoria Iveco Bus presented the Afriway, a new model based on the Euromidi chassis specially developed for the African market needs

EUROMIDI TAILORED FOR AFRICAA new model manufactured by Iveco

Bus debuted on the streets of Pretoria, South Africa. It’s called Afriway and was unveiled last March at the annual conven-tion of the Southern African Bus Operators Association (SABOA) in Pretoria. It is a bus local-ly-built in South Africa to meet the local market requirements.Available initial-ly in a two-axle c o n f i g u r a t i o n ( 1 2 . 3 - m e t r e ) w i th manua l o r au tomat ic transmission, a three-axle ver-sion (14- metre) is to follow. The Afr iway is built on the Euromidi chassis while the bodywork was designed by Dubigeon, the longtime Iveco partner.Among the peculiarities of the Afriway there is an engine positioned over the front axle rather than in the front for better wei-

ght distribution, which enables an increase payload, the suspension tailored to enhance ride comfort in relation to the specific bus chassis and then the passenger entrance po-sitioned in the longer front overhang. There is a wide range of optionals. The

Afriway will be produced at the ISAW plant in Rosslyn, in the suburb of Pre-toria. Service and spare parts will be mana-ged by a group of selected dea-lers. A two-year factory warranty is offered on the complete bus, and a three-year or 300,000 km warranty covers

the chassis driveline. Iveco Bus aims at offering the Afriway for some of the large tenders being issued by parastatal-owned companies as well as targeting tender op-portunities across the South African bor-ders. • More articles about Iveco Bus: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/486/articoli-costruttore-europa

TURKISH MARKET

THE 6th edition of Busworld Turkey took place in three halls of the

Istanbul Expo Centre on April 14-17. This biennial event is devoted mainly to the in-ternal bus market but has always been a showcase open to the international markets, to which the Turkish manufacturers have always been oriented obtaining important results in terms of exports, both as providers of complete vehicles and components. In terms of bus manufacturing in Turkey, the indicators keep being all positive, despite the fact that the internal market still does not succeed in recovering the volumes of 2013, both in the midibus category (7-9 metres and 25-35 passenger seats) and buses over 9 me-tres (city, intercity and coach). In 2015, the local market has absorbed 3,312 midibuses (+ 9.7% compared to 2014) and 2,032 solo buses (+ 47.5%).Unfortunately, for minibuses, the data provi-ded by OSD (the main source for our tables) since 2012 do not report the internal market volumes any more, in addition not to taking into account the manufacturing and export data of many models mainly based on Mer-cedes-Benz Sprinter and Iveco Daily.

At the 6th edition of the Istanbul Busworld, local industry offers new models to the local market and for export. A few no-shows have been compensated by excellent returnsBus manufacturing is steadily growing in all categories. There is a constant escala-tion of minibuses that managed to exceed 47 thousand units thanks to Ford Otosan (45,453 units) that produces mainly for export (84%).

The midibus manufacturing is also going well (+ 34%) despite the drastic reduction (-45.7%) in export revenues in 2015 which is added to approximately -16% of the pre-vious two years. Otokar is the leader in this segment, both in terms of manufactured and exported midibuses. The output growth for longer sizes (+ 36.4%) owes both to recovery in the local market and strong growth in exports (+ 23.3%) in 2015 letting 5,708 buses cross the border. Around 84% were produced in local plants of Merce-des and MAN, in addition to 437 Temsa (in phase of market share recovering), 328 Oto-

kar (+ 72%) and 152 Isuzu (+ 24.6%).In three halls of the Istanbul Expo Centre, except the specialists in components, there have only been some but not all local ma-nufacturers. If the absence of MAN Türk tends to be a standard practice, the missing stands of Mercedes Türk and Karsan came as surprise. These non-attendances, as well as the lowest total number of exhibitors (145 against 248 during the previous edition) can be explained by the close proximity of the event (in terms of time length) with Comvex Istanbul, the fair dedicated to commercial vehicles and buses, starting on May 21, just a month after Busworld Turkey.

The return of BMC The return of BMC on market has aroused curiosity among the present manufacturers, as it ceased the activities at the end of 2012 and was confiscated by Turkish Saving Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF). Thanks to the subse-quent purchase by ES Turkish financial instru-ment and the Qatar Government (interested in BMC manufacturing of military vehicles), the bus manufacturing has therefore made a comeback with a completely new range inclu-ding vehicles from 7.5 to 18 metres.Five models, all being part of the Procity range, were revealed at Busworld. Starting from 12 metres (11,880 mm in length) there is a super low-floor bus, fitted with Cummins ISB6.7 Euro VI engine delivering 280 hp and ZF Ecolife automatic transmission, also expo-sed with Euro V engine and in CNG version. Euro VI engine delivering 320 hp and roof cylinders with a capacity of 1.176 litres. Finally, there were two versions of Procity measuring 10 metres, characterized by broken line drawing at the bottom of the side win-dows. The first one was a three-door City bus, lowered till the second door, with two access stairs leading to the raised rear part, Cummins Euro VI engine delivering 250 hp and Allison 6-speed automatic transmission. On the left side, the structure below the window is coated with glass sheets in correspondence with the wheelchair area. There are 19.5 inch wheels. The same characteristics can also be applied for the intercity version that differs only in terms of door number (two), luggage racks and padded folding seats.

The expanding Otokar Otokar (the company of Koc Group) also par-ticipated in this edition of Busworld Turkey, being up to the mark with its revenues in 2015 grown by 16% and even by 77% regarding the exports. In the bus manufacturing sector the orders increased by 42.8% reaching the share of 3,529 vehicles in 2015. For the sixth consecutive year Otokar remains the leader of the Turkish bus market for the vehicles with more than 25 passenger capacity: one of every three buses is Otokar.Exports are also going well with 561 vehi-cles that have marked an increase of 44.6% compared to 2014. Otokar exports buses to over 45 countries, in the meantime being the

preferred brand of midibus in France; with significant sales increase in Germany, Bel-gium, Spain and Italy. There are the new open markets in Benin Republic and Malta (176 buses). Tunisia remains the third country for export volumes of Otokar buses in 2015.Otokar introduced eight models at Busworld. In the forefront there was the new articu-lated Kent C, already presented last fall at Kortrijk Busworld that received an order for 100 units made by the Municipality of Izmir. It is an 18.75-metre super low-floor, fitted with DAF / Paccar MX 11 engine delivering 369 hp, ZF EcoLife automatic transmission and transport capacity up to 164 passengers.Otokar also unveiled a 12-metre version and a 9.3-metre Vectio C more applied for

municipal services, lowered till the second door (in Turkey under the name of Doruk 220 LE), still exhibited with Euro V engine and a 7.7-metre raised-floor Navigo C (Sul-tan City) with the second door on the rear overhang and Cummins Euro VI engine de-livering 231 hp.A 7.1-metre Navigo T tourist version (Sultan 140S Comfort) with Euro V engine delive-ring 135 horsepower and a Navigo U (Sul-tan Maxi) with central lift and capacity of transporting 7 disabled passengers sitting in their wheelchairs were also showcased. Isuzu and GuleryuzIn 2015, Anadolu Isuzu marks the manu-facturing volume increase (plus 29.9%) but decrease in export share, especially in the midibus segment (-78.3%), only partly com-pensated by growth in solo buses (+24.6%). Six already seen models were presented at Busworld in Istanbul. In the forefront the-re was a 12-metre city bus honored by the international Grand Jury of the ECW (Euro-pean Coach Week) within the framework of the Kortrijk Busworld. The interior features information screens for hearing-impaired persons and audio information systems for

visually impaired persons.Alongside, there was a 9.5-m Citibus lowe-red till the second door, with Cummins Euro VI engine delivering 205 horsepower and a capacity up to 73 passengers. Then there was a 7.5-metre MP Novociti, a 9-metre tourist Visigo with the 3-section glass ceiling and new multimedia system, a classic Turkuaz for mid-distance travels, with its version of 21+1+1 passenger capacity and 2+1 seat layout and, finally, a tourist Novo Lux.Three the Cobra vehicles dedicated to urban transport and unveiled by Güleryüz. The same buses, seen two years ago, were pre-sented with some differences. Cobra double decker with an open sightseeing area was exhibited in Sport version with Mercedes

OM 936 Euro VI engine delivering 300 hp and ZF Ecolife automatic transmission. The bus features the sliding canvas cover, infor-mation for 62 passengers provided in 8 diffe-rent languages via headset announce system at each separate seating place and a manual ramp at the second door. Also the 12-metre low-floor city GD 272 LF with passage to Euro VI is able to feature the Mercedes engine delivering 300 hp. It has a capacity of 28 seats plus 70 standing passen-gers and wheelchair area. On the contrary, the 9.3-metre GM 220 LE is (still with Man Euro V engine delivering 220 horsepower.

Temsa back to BusworldAfter missing the last edition of Busworld

Turkey, Temsa has returned with a range of models mainly aimed at the local market. At the Istanbul exhibition centre Temsa di-splayed two models presented in preview in March 2016. The first one is a 7.1-me-tre tourist Prestij SX with a front Mercedes Euro VI engine delivering 150 hp, five-speed manual transmission and 29 passenger seats. The second one is a 9.5-metre MD9 elec-triCity, lowered till the second door, with a 100 kW electric motor powered by 200 kWh batteries with a capacity of 26 seated pas-sengers plus 30 standing passengers and a wheelchair area.On the contrary, new Opalin and Avenue Plus met with the industry for the first time at Busworld Turkey. The Opalin model is a

7.7-metre intercity carrying up to 33 pas-sengers with a baggage compartment of 4.9 cubic metres and Euro VI engine delivering 180 horsepower. The Avenue Plus is the updated version of the 12-metre low-floor city bus, with a new front and rear design, start-stop system for reducing the fuel con-sumption and Cummins Euro VI engine de-livering 280 hp. There was also a two-door version of the Avenue İBUS.Temsa presented two versions of the High decker Safir for tourist services: the 12.3-me-tres Safir Plus and the 13-metres Safir Vip Plus, both with DAF/Paccar Euro VI en-gine delivering 435 hp. Alongside with as many versions of the Marathon (Standard and VIP), there was the super high decker which debuted on the international scene at the Kortrijk Busworld last year. Lengths and engines are identical to Safir.

Iranians from Bursa In 2013, bringing together the experience of Akia (Iran) and Hess (Switzerland) Akia Hess Otomotiv started manufacturing direc-tly in Turkey, in Bursa. At Istanbul Busworld they foregrounded their Metrobus, a vehicle designed for the Istanbul’s municipalities also available in the trolley version. The 25-metre long bus consists of three articu-lated sections resting on five axles; the dri-ving position is completely separated from the passenger area accessible through four double-leaf doors on both sides, with a ma-ximum capacity of 290 passengers (29 se-

ats). The external aesthetics recalls that of the VDL Phileas. The new versions of the Ultra LF 9 low-flo-or citybus and the LF 12, measuring 9.5 to 12 metres respectively, were also unveiled at the exhibition. For both of them the Euro VI transition leads to the Mercedes engi-nes and the resulting two ventilation grilles for the tailgate, as for the Mercedes Citaro. For the short one there is the 5.1-litre OM 934LA delivering 210 horsepower combined with Allison T280R automatic transmission. On the other hand, for the 12-metre version there was the 7.7-litre OM 936LA delive-ring300 hp combined with Allison or ZF au-tomatic gearbox.

From abroad only the Spanish Ferqui which marked its presence, however, without exposing any vehicles.High end interiors, special lighting, hi-gh-performance audio-video systems and seating configurations link the proposals focused almost exclusively on Mercedes Sprinter and Iveco Daily. The Erener Class II based on Daily 70 gained the attention. Extended up to 8.5 metres, it can carry 24 seated passengers plus 7 standing ones. On the rear overhang the floor is lowered (with recessed manual ramp) and one has to climb two stairs to reach the central corridor. 3,500 metres above sea level, in the splendid scenery of Mont Blanc, Iveco presents its new Daily Euro 6. Even more performance, low fuel consumption, minimized environmental impact and comfort

ON THE ROOF OF EUROPE

ONE more time Iveco raises the bar on its light commercial

Daily and presents the New Daily Euro 6 two years after the introduction of the third generation. There is even more powerful model, reducing fuel consumption, main-

è è

tenance costs and environmental impact. It offers a comfortable and silent cabin in addition to a higher level of connectivity with Daily Business Up application.Higher and higher, then, and what better scenery of Mont Blanc at 3,466 meters high on top of the Helbronner peak to unveil last April its new creation. “We have invested half a billion euros into the new Daily in 2014, for the moment we have invested another hundred million, mainly for the engine complete redesign”, - said Pierre Lahutte, Iveco brand president. The 2.3 and 3.0 litre engines are now more powerful developing as much as 120-210 hp with four power levels and a torque ran-ging from 320 to 470 Nm.

Page 15: BUSTOCOACH EUROPEAN ON-LINE MAGAZINE - May 2016

The 2.3-litre F1A engine has been reengi-neered for Daily Light Duty versions and is offered in three power ranging (120, 140 and 160 hp). By using modern materials Iveco has been able to reduce the engine’s weight by 6%. And all this, combined with a nu-mber of improvements such as installation of a variable displacement oil pump, further optimization of the cooling and the MultiJet II injection system, enables fuel savings by up to 8% (NEDC cycle). This engine main-tains availability of the EGR system, but at the beginning of 2017 will feature SCR te-chnology keeping EGR for those who prefer. The optimized 3.0-litre F1C is dedicated to the Daily Duty Euro 6 versions (180 and 210 hp) and Heavy Duty Euro VI delivering 180 hp. This engine has the SCR technology and new fuel injectors that help to optimise combustion. As for the transmission, the eight-speed Hi-Matic automatic gearbox introduced a year and a half ago, is now a new generation for Euro 6. The gear change is also optimised resulting in cutting fuel consumption. There are two operating modes: Eco and Power, with EcoSwitch PRO function to adjust the engine torque to the load conditions for fuel saving. The front Daily grille creating a ho-rizontal line (usually black) is chromed in order to be distinguished. In addition to efficiency and fuel consu-mption, maintenance intervals have been extended to 50,000 km through the use of longer lasting components. The optimised braking system with new, brake pads is more efficient either. All this, together with the harmonisation of maintenance interventions resulting in more vehicle uptime, adds up to a significant reduction in maintenance and repair costs cut by up to 12% depending on the vehicle’s mission. The driving cockpit is also gaining more comfort: with the noise level reduced (-4 dB), a new leather steering wheel and a re-vised layout to include up to 18 storage com-partments. The dashboard introduces new features designed to create a professional workstation. The new digital radio integrated in the dashboard provides all the main DAB and FM features with all the multimedia and phone management functionalities expected on a high-end vehicle. Two USB ports make

it possible to enjoy multimedia contents through the DAB radio and to charge mobi-le devices. An optional inductive charger is available for smartphones featuring the latest technologies.Another novelty is the Daily Business Up, an application that assists the driver with many functions: from improving the driving style to reduce the fuel consumption, till advising on safety and efficiency and connection with the vehicle to communicate with its engine.

They just need to download the app on their device and it will establish Bluetooth con-nection with the vehicle through the digital DAB radio.Daily Business Up also includes a dealer and workshop locator and a direct link to Iveco Assistance Non Stop, the 24/7 roadside as-sistance service.Manufactured at the Iveco plant in Suzzara (Mantova), the New Daily Euro 6 will be available on the market in June 2016. •

T he Daily Minibus Euro VI range offers a wide choi-

ce in terms of configuration, size – lengths ranging from 6m up to 7.5m – and custo-mization, with an extensive range of options both for the mechanics of the vehicle and the interior fittings. As for the engine, there is a choice between a Euro VI diesel version with a 3-litre F1C delivering 180 hp, a methane engine and a ‘full electric’ with high-density batteries combined with su-percapacitors.The Daily Euro VI Minibus can also be offered with the eight-speed Hi-Matic auto-matic transmission, fitted as standard on Tourys version. Another new fe-ature is the now possible fitting of the Telma retarder with the Hi-Matic automatic gear-box, a winning c o m b i n a t i o n , which enhances safety on hilly and mountainous roads. The bodywork has been completely overhau-led, while the supporting chassis has remained unalte-red: the solid, robust and dura-

ble base of the Daily Minibus. The driver area has also been redesigned. The new seat fe-atures a lowered seating point by 15 mm while the steering wheel is now 20 mm smaller and 7° more vertical, impro-ving comfort and handling. The new windscreen incre-ases the driver’s field of vi-

sion with 40mm more glass. The controls have been po-sitioned in an ideal layout to improve handling, whilst the

new dashboard now conta-ins wider and more practical and easily accessible storage compartments. The climate control system boasts higher efficiency and soundproofing. Among the safety devices fit-ted on the Daily Minibus, the-re are the ESP9, the LDWS system that alerts the driver in

case of straying out of the lane and the cruise control. Electro-nic Stability Pro-gram comes as standard on all versions, while the Lane Depar-ture Warning and the rear camera are optional. The

rear pneumatic suspension is available on request either. In 2015 Iveco bus sold 2,310 Daily minibuses, reaching a 12% market share and a leading positions in Italy (47%), France (31%) and Spain (31%). •

AS it goes in the famous saying, “ If the Hill will not come to Mahomet,

Mahomet will go to the hill.” In our own small way we did the same thing. Given the difficulties associated with the test drive on the route usually used by BusToCoach in busy Milan traffic, we jumped at the chance to test-drive the MAN Lion’s City on the streets of Munich, in Germany.

T he Lion’s City offers 29 lightweight and ergonomic

passenger seats with upholstery fabrics and integrated handle made by the Polish company Ster. Additionally, there are 57 standing spaces plus the wheel-chair (space) area opposite door 2. Besides door 2, the seats are fixed on raised base in back-ground leftwards and can be ac-cessed taking tree steps under the rear window (the engine-gearbox unit is housed below). In corre-spondence with the wheelchair space, accessible using the fold-ing ramp with outside door acti-vation switches, the side window in the lower part is also glazed to help brighten up the interior. To complete the interiors, there are the shaped handrails in sa-tin-finish tubular steel, glass par-tition walls in front of the expo-sed seats, the LED lighting in the ceiling with two recessed glass skylights. Along the walls, the-re are also some USB charging

sockets and technical precondi-tions for fitting a WLAN router. For the interior climate there is a roof-mounted Spheros Revo 32 kW air conditioning system plus the Eberspächer Hydronic 35 he-ater. The driver’s cockpit is well

protected with a full height rear wall with glazed upper part and side low door. A pneumatic Isri ProActive 2 is a swivel, adjusta-ble, air-conditioned driver’s seat complete with lumbar support. The excellent field of vision is

obtained through two faired rear-view mirrors, the right double mirror and the left pillar moun-ted mirror. Two sunshades on the windscre-en and a side curtain are manual-ly adjustable. •

Obviously, the defined performance (fuel consumption and average speed) is not di-rectly comparable to the buses so far test-driven (refer to the table at the end of the article), given the vehicle pressure differences and the route characteristics (traffic and number of simulated stops) but still useful for evaluation of the Lion’s City on the basis of the actual ope-ration.Let’s see the results. The chosen route is that of Munich, which goes through the line sec-tions 143, 51 and 160, in reality rather smooth, for a total of 34.11 km, routes simulating stops every 500 metres and the vehicle loaded with 16,340 kg of ballast, corresponding to about two-thirds of the paylo-ad. During the test drives made in Milan, the simu-lated stops were foreseen every 300 metres but the vehicle ballast was, in generally, about 1,000 kg lighter. The results obtained from the MAN Lion’s City were really good: one litre of diesel fuel consumed for an average of 2.6 kilometres with an average speed of 20.6 km/hour. The speed figures reflect the traffic conditions which, we remind you, in Milan do not allow going beyond 16 km/hour.The protagonist of the Lion’s City good per-formance is a drivetrain that could deal with everything. The test-driven vehicle was, in fact, fitted with a 10.5litre MAN D2066 en-gine delivering 320 horsepower (235 kW) and 1,600 Nm of torque, kept at bay by the ZF EcoLife automatic transmission with the latest Step 3 software offering improved gear changing and a fluidity of the steps that make them almost imperceptible.

T he Lion’s City powerful en-gine is a subject of our test

drive. Mounted in the longitu-dinal direction in the left corner of the rear compartment, there was indeed the MAN D02066 in vertical configuration with 6-cyl-inder in-line for a total displace-ment of 10.5 litres, with a maxi-mum power of 320 horsepower (235 kW) at 1,900 rpm and a torque of 1,600 Nm at 1,000 - 1,400 rpm.It features the common rail injection, two-stage turbine and a mixture of exhaust gas recir-culation (EGR), catalytic reduc-tion (SCR) and particulate filter (DPF) for exhaust gas emission reduction. For not too heavy applications you may opt for the smaller 9-li-tre vertical D0836 with outputs of 250 or 290 horsepower. The engine and gearbox are ac-cessible not only through the rear door, but also through the outer door leftwards and through the

floor hatches inside the passenger compartment. The gearbox is the automatic ZF EcoLife Step 3 (the Voith Diwa 6 is also available), with transmis-sion in line to the hypoid rear

axle MAN HONP-13100 with differential leftwards. There is an electronically con-trolled air suspension (ECAS) and the rigid VOK-07 front axle with stabiliser bar. •

To draw a general conclusion, it is possi-ble to feel the improvements introduced on Lion’s City in the past three years, parti-cularly on efficiency and fuel consumption optimisation, since the reduction of vehicle weight by approximately 200 kg (the weight of the tested vehicle is 11,810 kg) thanks to a weight-optimised air conditioning (Spheros), as the seats are lighter. Other features are the two-stage air compressor with auto-idle fuel system and impro-ved air flow characte-ristics, thus, reducing the amount of energy required.Interventions were also made at the level of chassis and body, with sides coated with panels of fibrous compound, resistant to corrosion and ea-sily repairable. As for the doors, available whether in single or double-leaf versions, with exterior or inte-rior swing opening, MAN now caters for the need for a maintenance-free solution due to wear-resistant components and fully en-cased drive unit thus protected against dirt.As regards safety, the Lion’s City really sco-res thanks to its torsion-resistant frame, ESP, EBS, engine start lock, emergency brake signal, rain/light sensor and automatically closing skylights. To be distinguished at first glance from the predecessors, the exterior features a black middle front flap on all of MAN’s models, in addition to the LED daytime lights. •
