THE Lion’s Intercity is the last born product in the MAN’s family.

The vehicle is designed not only for intercity transportation but also for long-distance shut-tle services and school trips. All thanks to its flexibility.Special emphasis is placed on consumption, safety and maintenance. The vehicle sets standards with its efficient fuel consumption

achieved due to lightweight components such as new efficient air conditioning system that reduces the weight by 65 kg or aluminum wheels that cut another 100 kg from the ove-rall weight of the vehicle. Using the lightwei-ght MAN D0836 LOH series 6-cylinder engi-ne makes another substantial contribution. In addition, there are a number of fuel-saving measures: the automatic Idle Shutdown en-

engine and luggage compartments. The scope of the safety equipment on the Lion’s Intercity is noticeably wider than that of its competitors: EBS with ABS, ASR, BA and ESP. Concerning the ‘maintenance’, the target was to avoid high repair and workshop costs and to reduce vehicle down times, thereby redu-cing the cycle. All maintenance points on the bus are therefore easily accessible, including the front lights, and the division into three sections of the front panel as well as the rear

It can provide a torque of 1,600 Nm, on the constant basis between 1,050 and 1,300 rpm.If this is not enough, you can always take the most powerful version, with 360 hp and 1700 NM.The high-pressure common-rail with XPI is kept as an injection system, while the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) for the re-duction of polluting emission is changed in favour of a muffler that integrates the upstream NOx sensor, diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), full flow diesel particu-late filter (DPF), AdBlue mixer, twin parallel SCR catalysts, am-monium slip catalysts (ASC) and downstream NOx sensor.

The temperature (°C) is measu-red all the way up to the cataly-sts and the pressure drop (ΔP) across the DPF monitored to as-sess the status of the filter. The gearbox is the automa-tic six-speed ZF Ecolife with

integrated retarder and NBS (Neutral at bus stop) to provide the automatic switch to neutral while stopping. Upon request you can have the automated ei-ght-speed full-retarder Scania Opticruise. •

favored by total vehicle weight of less than about 400 kg. Both vehicles were presented to the test with the ZF automatic transmission. In comparison with the Setra UL, the Irizar i4 comes out well despite having a lower power (320 hp vs 354), however, compensated by a greater torque availability (1,600 Nm vs 1,400), which is very useful in dealing with uphill. For more challenging operations, there is still an option with the same Scania engine but of higher performan-ce (360 horsepower and a torque of 1,700 Nm).The smooth ride is en-sured by controlled suspension as well as breaking is ensured by the EBS.It must be mentioned that the tested i4 pre-sented the interior aisle lowered to 855 mm abo-ve the ground (version L) that serves in addi-tion to lower the center of gravity and thus im-prove driving stability, facilitate the access of passengers. As a result you lose a bit in the luggage compartment capacity that stops at 3.5 cubic metres and gain in space-saving for the wheelchair lift. Also available in the versions ‘H’ with an ai-sle of 1,150 mm above the floor and seats on the raised base or the ‘M’ version with fully interior floor plan. Finally, worthy of note is the external aesthe-tics, which comes close to the touring coach features, starting from the streamlined exte-rior mirrors. •

P rofitability, in other words, is an ideal ratio of money and quality starting from

the moment of purchase till maintenance and day to day operation. These characteristics you can find in the Setra MultiClass 400 ‘bu-siness’ models. In practice there is efficient and economical interior equipment that keeps however unchanged the technological featu-res, from the driveline size onwards.Introduced at the end of 2013, in conjunction with the transition to the Euro VI engine, they are available in the following lengths : 12.2 metres (S 415 UL Business), 12.7 metres (S 416 UL Business) and 13.38 metres (S UL 417 Business). Recently, the 12.3 and 13-me-tre long Low Entry models (LE) have been also added.

THE interiors is charac-terized by essential

details but it’s difficult to notice. The light gray plastic laminate finishes plus velvet on the walls under the windows matching the seats; all this gives a certain amount of elegance to the inte-riors.The luggage racks on both side of the ceiling are beautiful and spacious (1.85 cubic metres) fitted with the bottom grill and tubular chrome handrail (at the left luggage). They are coupled with the air conditioning duct distributing air towards the glass through current loopholes. Ait conditioning is the EvoCool Basic group with 32 kW of cooling power. Heating is guaranteed by the Spheros Ther-mo 300 staying rearwards behind the door on the right side.Personal equipment as well as the curtains on the windows are

not included. Two hatches with manual ope-ning and neon lights are recessed in the center of the ceiling. Both the access doors, the front single leaf and the central double leaf doors, are opened on four very

low steps (165 mm) to facilitate the ingress and egress of passen-gers. There are 51 ‘Transit’ type padded seats, with fixed backrest, integrated headrest, seat belt and aisle side handrail. Then the-re are four folding seats in the

wheelchair area and 29 standing places. In all the MultiClass models the driver’s seat with the com-mon ergonomic dashboard is of the same height as the cor-ridor. •

THE TEST ROUTEPASSENGERS

The UL Business buses have a raised floor up to 850 mm above the ground, and can be used on suburban routes, for school trips or occasional trips.BusToCoach tested the S 415 UL on mixed route used for intercity, in other words, 372 km were passed mainly on state roads, and only a third along the highway. The obta-ined results confirm the promise of low running costs. The average consum-ption was one litre of diesel per 4.3 km (in-cluding the portion of equivalent AdBlue), traveling on the ave-rage at a speed of 63.8 km/hour.It should be noted that the test vehicle was 400 kg lighter than the maximum allowed weight of 18 tons and under the hood there was the more powerful version of the Mer-cedes OM 936 engine, delivering 354 hor-sepower (260 kW) and offered as an option instead of that delivering 299 horsepower

THE S 415 UL Business was at the drive test

with the most powerful version of the 7.7-litre OM 936. It deliv-ers 354 horsepower (260 kW) and 1,400 Nm of torque. Every-thing is made in order not to miss anything in case of challenging roads. The six-cylinder Mercedes en-gine belongs to the new gene-ration of BlueEfficiency Power engines with common rail injec-tion system, high-pressure pump (2,400 bar) and two-stage turbo-charger.The reduction of polluting emis-sions is achieved through the combination of exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) and aftertre-atment with oxidation catalytic converter, particulate filter (DPF) and catalyst (SCR) with AdBlue injection. Everything is electro-nically controlled by the ACM.The test vehicle has got the ZF Ecolife six-speed automatic tran-smission instead of the Mercedes

manual gearbox offered as stan-dard. Alternatively you can also have the Voith automatic or auto-mated eight-speed GO 250.To ensure the driving safety, all the Business models are fitted as standard with Brake Assist Sy-

stems such as ABS, ASR, EBS and Brake Assist. The structural strength is guaranteed in com-pliance with the ECE-R66 regu-lation. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is likely to be an option. •

(220 kW) as standard. The same is about the gearbox. Instead of manual MB GO 190-6 as standard, our UL business has been equipped with the automatic ZF Ecolife. A solution however is recommended for the scheduled services, both to facilitate the work of the dri-ver and control the consumption. With a final reduction ratio equal to 5,222, you are trave-ling with a speed of 80km/h in sixth gear with the engine just running at 1,300 rpm and less than 1,700 if you are tra-veling at a speed of 100 km per hour. There is an optimal balance between consumption and perfor-mance.The central door with double glazed folds is likely to allow the in-stallation of the retracta-ble wheelchair lift in the steps. The test vehicle wasn’t fitted with the above-mentioned option, but there still was the front door wheelchair area with four folding jump seats. To facilitate the eventual access of the wheelchair, the two seats on the right side of the stair are reclining forward. The space under the floor is also well exploi-ted, so we can obtain a luggage compartment of more than 4.5 cubic metres, accessible by flaps with wing opening on both sides. The Ul keeps its regular external appearance, except for the ventilation grill added to the engine bonnet. All the UL Business variants are provided with the multiple safety systems and the own characteristics of strength and durability of the Setra buses. •
