Bus registrations in the EU rose to nearly 17% than in the first half of the past year. Demand was primarily driven by Spain and the UK, followed by France and Italy

Good performance of the European bus market in the first half of 2015. Accor-

ding to the periodic survey of the ACEA, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Asso-ciation, the vehicles over 3.5 tons registe-red between January and June increased by 16.9%. These are 18,669 units compared to 15,974 registered in the first half of 2014.The Western European countries are all posi-tive about the current situation. Four Solaris Urbino electric buses have been tested in Berlin. And starting from October a vehicle will be tested in Paris

THE testing of the Solaris Urbino 12 electric bus took place in Berlin

last July. There were four vehicles fitted with the Vossloh Kiepe’s electric drive system. The 160 kW asynchronous central engine guaran-tees a good and smooth acceleration and 65 km/h maximum speed. The Bombardier bat-tery set with a capacity of 90 kWh is charged through the inductive Primove system at the two terminal stops. With an output of 200 kW, the recharging process takes a few mi-nutes and enables the buses to cover the di-stance to reach the next charging station. After Berlin, the Solaris Urbino electric bus will

also be tested in Paris. The Polish producer will provide a vehicle to the RATP, the public transport authority of the French capital. The electric bus wil be equipped with a 240 kW battery and a plug-in charging system. The drive axle will be the ZF AVE 130, in which two independent electric motors are mounted

close to the wheels. This solution reduces the overall weight of the vehicle even fur-ther and allows incre-asing the space in the bus. There are 30 seats, including 16 without pedestal. Energy-ef-ficient LED lighting will be used both in-side and outside the bus. The ergonomic driver’s area offers a

higher sitting position. The Urbino electric bus will be tested in Pa-ris for a few months and will run in regular service on lines 21 and 147.The project is linked to RATP’s project to converte its entire fleet with electric vehicles by 2025. •

THE Swiss PostBus transport com-pany has achieved an important

milestone in the testing of fuel cell buses. On July 31 its five Mercedes-Benz hydro-gen buses collectively passed the threshold of one million kilometres. Since December 2011, five vehi-cles have been used in daily operation in sche-duled service and offer special shut-tle bus services at different event such as the World Economic Forum in Davos or the film festival in Locarno. In order to refuel these buses, Po-stBus has built a special service station to produce hydrogen on site. Since the project started, five buses have been supplied with 80 tons of hydrogen, 70 tons of which were produced independently by Autopostale in Brugg and the rest was delivered by third parties. The company has declared that the hydrogen

buses have led to a reduction of CO2 emis-sions equivalent to 1,200 tons.PostBus manages these resources within the “Clean Hydrogen in European Cities” (CHIC) project, which supports fuel cell bus projects in several European cities.

After an agreed period over five years, the testing plan will ends up in Decem-ber 2016. As part of the en-vironmental su-stainability and the reduction of CO2 emissions, PostBus takes into great ac-count the testing and use of alter-

native propulsion technologies: 31 PostBus hybrid diesel buses are in operation across Switzerland. In 2016, the company also wants to start a long-term trial of three electric buses deli-vered by different manufacturers. The noti-ce for these vehicles was announced in the spring time. •

A greater mileage and a lower rolling resistance are the main benefits of MC: 01 tyre to guarantee a high-yield investment for daily usage, which adds up to a lower cost per kilometre and a re-duced fuel consumption. The load capacity is increased, shock absorption is improved - even from the side - and extended life is a result of the MC:01 structure evolution. The innovations introduced by Pirelli engineers have affec-ted both the tyre tread and shoulder and the materials and manufacturing techniques applying all the latest technolo-gies and two exclusive patents. The improvements compared to MC88 are significant on all fronts: from mileage to rolling resistance, from comfort to adhesion on dry and wet surfaces, and finally to retrea-dability. The International Association of Public Transport defines the guidelines of the European bus system towards a higher quality of urban life and a reductionof pollutant emissions

THE UITP TAKES A POSITION

TO carry 10,000 people across 1 kilo-metre by car you need 2,000 vehi-

cles, 24,000 square metres of space and 200 litres of fuel. If you are traveling by bus, (12-metre long) you can manage with 100 vehicles, 3,200 square metres and 50 litres of fuel. Few numbers to show a clear situa-tion: the public transport is an opportunity to take both for the reduction of pollutant emissions and for the use of scarce resour-ces, from fuel to public space. This is the position of the UITP, the association which represent the public transport sector at in-

ternational scale with 1,300 member com-panies from 93 countries.Last June the UITP presented a paper taking a position towards a reduction of pollutants and CO2 emissions and a higher quality of urban life. About that, it provides a series of recommendations to the European Union concerning the public transport, a sector that according to the UITP employs 1.2 million workers and generates from 130 to 150 billion euro per year amounting to 1-1.2% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Europe.

BusToCoach on-line Magazine - September 2015

Page 11: BUSTOCOACH EUROPEAN ON-LINE MAGAZINE - September 2015

The UITP decalogue covers around ten action points aimed at boosting the pu-blic transport and making it a useful tool. Its promotion is based first of all on the support of local authorities in developing sustainable mobility where efficient public transport can form the backbone of the ur-ban mobility. There is a recommendation to expand pu-blic transport systems by investing into

more priority bus lanes reserved for public transport, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Bus High Service Level (BHLS). A higher and more regular commercial speed, not only attracts passengers but also saves fuel and produces even fewer emissions. Then, encouragement of cities to set am-bitious quantitative modal share targets to attain balanced sustainable local mobility. A shift towards a use of public transport

should be trigge-red by increasing the public tran-sport attractive-ness. Not only by increasing speed and punctual i ty

but offering modern fleets, a high level of service, easy access to information and ticketing systems, accessible vehicles and infrastructure, comfort on board. In 2009, UITP members set out the ambitious aim to double the market share of public transport worldwide by 2025. Keeping this aim in mind, they started several research projects which delivered, for example, new layout concepts of the vehicle for increased capa-city, accessibility and comfort; an IT archi-tecture enabling better integrated mobility services; a new design of bus stops.Projects and research need investments and resources. On this point the UITP recom-mends to continue to provide funding ear-marked for public transport development within the European research framework programmes and engage into a long-term research rather than into pilot projects.Another important step is the ‘clean fleet’. “The European Union, Member States and local transport authorities”, says the UITP, “should consider that a ‘clean fleet’ can be composed of hybrid, electric and alternati-vely fueled vehicles as well as by modern Euro VI diesel buses. It is the task of lo-cal authorities to determine the right mix, taking into account the feasibility in the local context”.Just about less polluting fleets, the UITP calls for funding even the European Invest-ment Bank (EIB), in order to enable an ac-celerated renewal of the oldest parts of fle-ets, leading to an immediate improvement in CO2 emissions and other pollutants. The

UITP reminds that almost 50% of the buses used across the European Union are still Euro III and pre-Euro III.Sufficient resources should be made availa-ble for the development of sustainable tech-nologies, the further testing and the market uptake of electric and alternatively-fuelled busses and related infrastructure. “The UITP considers that new propulsion technologies should be further developed and tested in order to increase their availa-bility and reliability. The purchase of alter-natively-fuelled or electrical bus should not lead to a reduction of the overall service because of budgetary restraints. The key strategy to reduce CO2 emissions in cities should be to make more people shift from individual to public transport “. The UITP also encourages Member Sta-tes to invest in green public transport and develop future-oriented sustainable urban mobility plans, supporting efforts throu-gh the European structural and investment funds. The last recommendation follows the pu-blication of the European Commission’s strategy to reduce CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles. “The UITP and its members welcome the Commission’s ini-tiative to introduce full transparency on fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions to the sector. The new legislation shall establish a mandatory certification system of realistic CO2 emissions. Reliable data representing real emissions is an important demand of the sector”. •

Even Scania switches to the parallel hybrid drive system. There is an eco-sustainable solution based on the Citywide LE model with the engine running on biodiesel

THE SCANIA PARALLELHYBRID

Since 30 years the Scania designers have been trying their hand at hybrid drives.

The construction of the first Scania hybrid bus prototype dates back to the mid 80s. In recent times, on the international markets the-re has been a rising tide of interest for this drive system that we saw at the UITP 2007 in Helsinki where Scania also presented its Concept bus with hybrid-series technology (motogenerator diesel plus supercapacitors and electric traction motor). Many have con-sidered this system as the most suitable one for city buses. But the market has its own laws and at the UITP 2013 in Geneva, Scania took note sta-ting that the energy storage systems (batte-ries and supercapacitors) have not evolved enough to provide a commercially satisfac-tory solution when it comes to service life and lifecycle cost. Hence the development of

a parallel-hybrid system (diesel engine plus online electric motor and battery pack) pre-sented at the IAA 2014 in Hanover. The 12-metre low-entry Citywide model (and the 3-axle version of 14.8 metres) has a drive system comprising the Scania Euro VI 9-litre diesel engine in 320 hp. The engine is coupled to the 12-speed automatic gearbox Opticruise integrated with a synchronous electric machi-ne with permanent magnet of 150 kW.The 1.2 kWh energy storage is provided by a lithium-ion battery integrated in the roof structure at the front of the vehicle, housed together with DC / DC voltage converter from 650 to 24 volt (power of 7.5 kW) that replaces the traditional alternator, the heater for batteries and cooling systems for batteries, converter and inverter with a capacity of 150 kW, that is positioned in its turn at the engine compartment.

Using the Citywide LE hybrid, Scania de-clares that you can face the city and suburban traffic with the same performance, being able to easily reach speeds up to 100km / h. And as for consumption, the use of the Scania hybrid system together with a DC/DC converter, stop-start function and Hybrid Eco-roll, provides savings between 20 and 25%, or between 1, 2 and 2.5 litres per hour of operation. If we use 100% biodiesel (possibility offered by the 320 hp engine), CO2 emissions are re-duced by 65%.The Scania Citywide hybrid is working quie-tly especially at low speeds when functioning only with the help of electrical system. When the vehicle is running with low torque, hybrid

eco-roll is activated. The electric machine then takes care both of pulling away and braking, thus keeping to a mi-nimum the engine wear. Finally, the engine stress is also reduced by stopping it at bus stops when a door is open or when the gear-box is in neutral and the parking brake is ap-

plied. The Citywide LE Hybrid is also

equipped with the Scania Commu-nicator, which is the link to the Scania

Fleet Management for the collection, analy-sis and transmission of data. The vehicle and the driver data can then be fully monitored remotely via an interface. Driver assistance is provided by Scania Driver Support which continuously informs the driver on the driving style. In the three-door configuration with two double and a single-leaf door on the rear overhang, the 12-metre Citywide hybrid can accommodate 33 seats. The floor has been lowered to 350 mm of the ground till the se-cond door and two steps give access to the corridor in the raised rear part. The Citywide hybrid alongside with the who-le range is built at the Scania plant of Slupsk, Poland, with underfloor structure made in steel and body in extruded aluminum profi-les bolted and covered with aluminum rive-ted and bonded panels. The same material is also used for the two heads, in addition to the polyurethane and polyester shockproof panels. •
