SETRA MULTICLASS IN EUROPE

N ew Setra MultiClass buses on the European streets. In Austria 16 S 415 UL business and two S 417 UL bu-

siness vehicles were put on service by the local transport company Retter-Linien GmbH based in Neunkirchen. This supply is part of a wider contract covering a total of 35 rural-service buses to be delivered between now and 2016. The order will also include low-floor LE business buses. Another 8 Setra MultiClass vehicles entered service in Leipzig, Germany. The Regionalbus Lei-pzig GmbH transport company took delivery of three S 415 UL and five S 419 UL buses. The S 415 UL is fitted with 49 seats, while the S 419 UL can accommodate up to 65 seated passengers. The new vehicles will be used primarily on regular-service and school bus routes in the wider Leipzig area, whereby each will cover around 50,000 kilometres a year. The Setra MultiClass range is composed of 12 models, all updated to Euro VI engines as far back as 2013. •

AN OPTARE BUS AT THE LONDON MUSEUM

AT the ElekBu 2015, the Germany’s electric vehicle trade show held in Berlin on February 23-24,

2015, it was on display the Chariot e-bus. This is an elec-tric bus which runs on an ultra-capacitor instead of batte-ries. It can travel up to 20 km on a single, rapid charge. Launched in Sofia, Poland, last May, it is the result of a collaboration between Chariot Motors and Chiese firms, bus manufacturer Higer, and ultra-ca-pacitor producer Aowei. A trial route in Sofia was assessed by the Belicon lab of the University of Landshut, Germany. Following Chariot data, the e-bus consumes over an average day 0.95 kWh/km, compared to a regular battery bus operating on the same route, which is expected to produce 1.5 kWh/km. Chariot e-bus is currently in operation with the city transport operator Stolichen Elektrotransport under a year-long pilot programme in Sofia. •

CHARIOT E-BUS AT THE ELEKBU 2015

B us manufacturer Optare delivered a custom built bus to London Transport Museum for the new All Aboard family

play zone which will open to the public on 28 March. The Solo midi has been loaded up into the upper deck of the All Aboard, a play area designed for children aged 0 to 7 years. The young explorers visiting the Museum will be able to sit in the driving seat and operate the indicators, change the bus

blinds and check out the CCTV. «Enrico Vassallo, CEO of Optare, commented, “When the London Transport Museum told us how popular the previous Optare bus had been with the children in the gallery, we were only too pleased to supply a custom built version of our latest Solo model, which is available in both Euro 6 diesel and full electric for the next generation of young people to enjoy and learn about bus travel in the new purpose built gallery at the Museum». •

BYD ELECTRIC BUSES IN SWEDEN

BusToCoach on-line Magazine - April 2015 FLASH NEWS

ON March 16, eight Volvo electric hybrid buses entered service in Stockholm, Sweden. The

line 73 is now entirely served by Volvo’s electric hybrids which replace all of the existing buses on this route. The eight vehicles will operate quietly and free of emissions on renewable electricity for seven of the route’s slightly more than eight kilometers, and the batteries will be qui-

ck-charged for only six minutes at the end stops. As a complement, the buses also have a small diesel engine that is driven on biodiesel. Services using electric hybrid buses in Stockholm are part of a demonstration project conducted by Volvo Buses, SL (Stockholm Public Transport) and energy provider Vattenfall. •

THE URBINO BECOMES A DESIGN WINNER

P remiered at the 2014 IAA Exhibition in Hannover, the new Solaris Urbino bus has been awarded for its design. It was

honored with the prestigious international iF DESIGN AWARD 2015 by a jury of 53 international design experts from over twenty countries. The iF DESIGN AWARD 2015 was celebrated on 27th February at BMW World in Munich. It is a completely new design of a city bus and is the result of a joint work of Solaris’s engineers and studioFT design agency from Berlin. Robust but lighter in weight, it offers high standard of comfort and it has an eye-catching but also functional design. The new Solaris also received the TOP Design Award in the automotive industry and public transport category. •

ELECTRIC HYBRIDS IN STOCKHOLM

THE Chinese manufacturer of pure electric buses BYD won a pioneering order for

two 12m ebuses in Eskilstuna, Sweden. This is the first order for BYD vehicles in the Scandinavian region. The

two BYD ebuses will enter service in November 2015 and will be operated by Transdev (formerly Veolia Transport). The ebuses are expected to meet the demanding conditions imposed by the Swedish Bus 2014 regulations and will be adapted to operate in the harsh climatic conditions in that part of Sweden in winter. The buses in Eskilstuna will have a range of at least 250km in typical urban operating conditions and this range was repeatedly replicated and indeed exceeded during the European trial programme. •

VDL Bus & Coach is developing the new Citea DLF (Dou-ble deck Low Floor) for the Berlin Transport Authority

(BVG). This is the first public transport double-decker bus built in the history of VDL. The Citea DLF has a low net weight, which results in excellent fuel economy and minimal emissions of harmful exhaust gases. The two-axle double deck bus is a 11.4-metre long vehicle with an innovative interior design. It’s fitted with two sets of stairs, USB connections for every row of seats and a display to show passengers how many seats are still available on the upper deck. The VDL Citea DLF is expected to be delivered to BVG in the summer. •

THE VDL CITEA DOUBLE DECKER BUS

The analysis of ANFIA in the framework of bus sector health in Italy brings to light the problems that have been dragging on for over a decade. Hard figures but also proposals

THE Anfia puts down in black and white the situation concerning

the bus industry in Italy. In its “Italia - Focus bus field”, the national auto industry associa-tion provided key data on vehicle produc-tion, mobility, demand and supply of TPL, fleet and internal bus market. All in all, it is a picture in gloomy colours that follows the alarm signals launched at every public debate for too many years, almost always left unanswered on the part of the central government, whatever their political color is.The ANFIA data (relative to year 2013) take a picture of the endangered Italian bus in-dustry, the public transport going down and becoming less competitive compared to pri-vate vehicle, the fleet of an average age of 12.2 years and the bus market which has hal-ved the number of new registrations in last 7 years. There are economic crisis effects,

insufficient public investment and absence of strategic vision on the part of the corpo-rate governance. In Italy the industrial policies related to the development of public transport and mobi-lity in general have not been adopted. As a consequence, in recent years the Italian bus industry survived loss of almost all of its bodywork, Iveco plant closure in Valle Ufita and drastic reduction of the weight on the Bredamenarini market (now merged with the new company “Bus Italian Industry”).State resources for the bus renewal have dropped dramatically over last 15 years, until its complete disappearance of state bu-dget heading in 2012. The regions have po-stponed investments and even 625 millions euro provided by the Stability Law in 2015 may suffer the same fate. Consequently, the Italian bus fleet is getting older and pollu-

ting: 30.520 vehicles (1/3 of the total number) are more than 17 years old and only 12% are under 4 years (data of year 2013, ACI source). As for “mobility” the ANFIA Focus registers a decline in ‘sweet’ travel modes (cycling and hiking) that drop to 16.9% and motor vehicle journeys rise to 83.1%. Among the latter, the

usage of two wheels is 3.7% (it it was 5.7% in 2008), of automobile is 82.7% (was 80%) and of public transport drops to 13.6% (it was 14.3 in 2012). Also in this case, a ne-gative impact was caused provoked by the cuts in resources meant for public transport in terms of services and investments. In particular, the local public transport seats/km offered have decreased over the last six years both in city buses and in intercity ones. That is how decreased the number of buses

It remains well below the European average load factor of 52.1% the (the ratio of tran-sported passengers to the number of offered seats) which is 30.7% in Italy.Another sore point is the photograph of bus fleet, increased by 6.3% in 10 years, reachi-ng an amount of 99 thousand vehicles in 2013, among those only 4% powered by methane. The worst data are concern the age of vehicle: the overall average is 12.2 years;

buses of class Euro 0 represent 23% of the total number (22,421) and this figure rises up to 51.8% if we count all the Euro 3 do-

ors. It should be relatively better concerning public transport (51.300 buses), where the percentage of Euro 0 is 17% and the Euro 3 doors amount to 46% of the total number. Meanwhile, shame on data concerning “hired and private” (47.700 vehicles) which keep Euro 0 equal to 28.7 and pre-Euro 3 equal to 58%.According to Stability Law 2015, Euro 0 buses will no longer circulate starting from January 1, 2019. According to Anfia, in order to replace the Euro 0 buses (8,500 vehicles), there is a need of public funding equal to 1.87 billion euro. We will see if the state succeeds in raising funds. At the beginning we said that the Italian bus industry is endangered but so the foreign manufacturers are that have to deal with an Italian market cut by half compared to the situation of seven years ago. In 2014, the number of new registrations amounted only to 2,152 (more than a third are of medium- small size), dropt to 15% compared to 2013.The Focus on the bus sector concludes with an indication of the priorities identified by ANFIA (see box). Hopefully it will not re-main unheard. •

positive increase in the operating return of sales of the Group that operates in the field of mechanical engineering and industrial vehicles: more than 0.8% compared to 2013, rising from 1.9% to 2.7%. In real terms it is a step in the operating profit by EUR 309 millions in 2013 to EUR 384 millions in 2014 (more than 75 million euro). Behind these figures there is a diversified si-tuation, with light and shadow, of the various productive sectors. FLEET BOARD

A llison Transmission and Cum-mins received certification

from the California Air Resources Board (ARB) to sell the model year 2015 Allison H 40/50 EPTM hybrid propulsion system paired with the Cummins ISB6.7 and ISL9 diesel-electric hybrid engines for transit buses and coaches. “We are pleased to remain the first and only hybrid system manufacturer approved for the transit market in California,” said Deborah Gordon, executive director of regulatory issues and hybrid programs for Allison Transmission. Allison’s H 40/50 EP hybrid propulsion system

is used for both straight and articulated transit buses. It has been shown to improve fuel economy up to 25 percent over similar diesel buses. Additionally, its regenerative braking ca-pability can significantly extend the brake change interval by as much as 350 percent. •

THE HYBRID WINS

A nkook Tire, one of the world’s lar-gest and fastest growing tyre manu-

facturers, has been awarded with the iF Design Award 2015 in the product di-scipline for its all-season truck and bus radial tyre, SmartFlex AH31. Suited for variable road and weather conditions, the all-season Hankook’s truck tyre was recognised for its technology and desi-gn newly adopted to provide even wear and high mileage performance with very low rolling resistance. The tyre features the M+S and 3PMS (3 Peak Mountain Snowflake) marks as well as a pattern with wide tread and shoulder design, along with 3 dimensional kerfs which ensures longer mileage, good handling performance and minimised irregular wear.•

ONE million units of the AS

Tronic transmission, the ZF automatic transmission system for heavy commer-cial vehicles. The AS Tro-nic has been produced at the ZF location in Friedri-chshafen, Germany, since 1997. The AS Tronic tran-smission range covers a torque range between 500 and 3,100 Newton meters. The AS Tronic lite (500 to 1,100 Nm) and the AS Tronic mid (800 to 1,600 Nm) are mainly used in light delivery trucks, buses, and medium-duty commercial vehicles, while the larger members of this transmission family are suitable for heavy trucks and construction vehicles. Coinciding with the production mile-stone of the AS Tronic, ZF is writing a new chapter in the history of this transmission type: TraXon, the modular auto-matic transmission system, which will be produced at the ZF location in Friedrichshafen and will gradually replace the AS Tronic over the next few years. The all-new basic transmis-sion is suitable for torque requirements of up to 3,500 Nm and can be linked to five modules. The new system features an anticipatory shifting strategy courtesy of PreVision GPS. ZF thus gives truck manufacturers the opportunity to link up the transmission with GPS data and digital map material. •

U rbanway range is in the limelight, the last series of city buses produced by

Iveco Bus at the plant of Annonay, France.Introduced in 2013 with new Euro VI engi-nes, it replaced the previous Citelis series with the Irisbus logo. It debuted in May 2013 at the 60th edition of the UITP exhi-bition in Geneva, being the first Euro VI passenger vehicle offered by Iveco Bus, in a 12-metre version.Today the Urbanway family is in three

lengths (10.47, 12 and 17.91 metres), two diesel engines (Tector 7 and Cursor 9) and two- alternative drive system: hybrid and natural gas. the BHNS (Bus à Haut Niveau de Service) version is the latest one with high level of transportation service with a wide configuration range and 3,500 style combinations. There are several evolutionary steps com-pared to the Citelis series. There is maximum corrosion protection, thank to the cataphoretic treatment of the entire steel structure.Besides, the Urbanway buses decrease the total operating cost by means of sharing the Irisbus range product facilities such as easily removable body elements, with front and rear bumpers consisting of three individual elements, front and rear lights separated by panels to avoid replacement in case of minor accidents, radiator grille and tailgate with a lot of additional space for advertising.

The other Urbanway strong points are li-ghting, air distribution system and new dri-ving position. There are interesting lighting solutions, both for the body and for the interiors. Among them there are new headlights that incorporate LED daytime running lights and the rear module with integrated LED for stop, indicators, side and tail lights. The fog lamps have the ‘corner light’ function for lateral illumination in tight corners and complex maneuvers. The central pavilion backlit with the LED interior lighting is considered to look beautiful along with two Led customized continuous bands with

Driving comfort is also ensured by the suspended accelerator pedal, the swivel seat and the large space availa-ble to the driver. The Urbanway range Euro VI engines are the 6.7-litre Tector 7 for versions of 10.5 and 12 metres and the 8.7-litre Cursor 9 for the 12-and 17.9-metre vehicles. The Hi-eSCR system by FPT In-dustrial is a technology that re-duces NOx emissions by means of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) without compromising fuel efficiency. The advantages are the followings: weight re-duction, limited fuel consum-ption, optimized combustion, less dust and greater longevity.

Every year Daimler Buses carry out tests under extreme conditions on iced-over lakes, snow-covered tracks or urban networks. Not far from the Arctic Circle

UNDER EXTREMECONDITIONSA rvidsjaur and Arjeplog in Sweden, Ro-

vaniemi (the so-called Santa Claus home town) in Finland. These three locations south of the Arctic Circle are the annual destina-tion of engineers, mechanics and drivers from the Daimler Buses ‘testing’ departme-nt in Neu-Ulm, Germany. A team of experts who periodically, between late January and mid-March, leave for Lapland to test vehi-cles, components, chassis, engines, steering systems, suspension, devices and materials. The Daimler’s in-house target is the perfect operation of all the Mercedes-Benz & Setra components at temperatures down to minus 25 degrees Celsius, and down to minus 40 ° for certain functions. In particular, there is the driving dynamics te-

sting on the iced-over lakes carried out at Arje-plog, with surfaces treated by the ice experts, while in the town of Rovaniemi the ‘test team’ not only uses its own test track with skid pan at the airport but also tests urban regular-service buses under extreme winter conditions in real traffic situations. So, it is no coincidence, in fact, that they call them ‘extreme tests’.“The driving test results on snow and ice are impressive,” - explain the technicians of Da-imler Buses, “Mercedes & Setra buses mana-ge to cope reliably with even the most chal-lenging tasks and precarious situations. And, above all, the vehicle always reacts in the way the driver expects. This applies to all vehicles, from minibuses right up to super-high-deck touring coaches”.

There are different examples confirming that. For example, Mercedes-Benz Tourismo K is reassuringly reliable in all driving situations thanks to its cleverly thought-out axle load distribution and precisely tuned safety and assistance systems. Or the Mercedes-Benz Travego, a “Safety Coach”, even on snow and ice, aided by all currently available safety and assistance systems, the 12.18-metre-long hi-gh-decker, which is an astounding performer,

even on glass-like road surfaces. The same applies to the Setra TopClass S 516 HDH – a three-axle vehicle that combines luxury and safety at the highest level, even in highly ad-verse road conditions. With these types of tests Daimler has made extended use as well for the transition to the Euro VI engines: seven years (2007-2013) of testing, 60 prototypes tested, and more than 5 million kilometres traveled. But there are not only extreme tests in arctic temperatures. Da-imler will test the vehicles under the opposite summer heat conditions in the Sierra Nevada, Spain, under the summer sun at 40 degrees and in Turkey where the vehicles complete their endurance tests and contend with major temperature fluctuations and extreme changes in air humidity.Around 200 people make up the Daimler Buses testing team. They have developed as well a test catalogue with standards applicable worldwide to all Daimler buses. • More articles about Daimler Buses: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/732/articoli-costruttore-italia

L ess than six months after the drive test of Irizar i6 measuring 12.2 metres in length

(see BusToCoach Magazine October 2014), Irizar is back to make a short at route of 342 km with the 3-axle i6 HDH 14.37 Euro VI, still based on Scania chassis as usual on the italian market. It is a 14-metre super high-decker powered by a 13-litre Scania engine with 490 hp (360 kW) and a torque of 2,550 Nm necessary to carry around an extra-long ballast without any problem as if it were under full load (23,840 kg).

T here is a really nice atmo-sphere inside the Irizar i6

in a length of 14.37m. The 59 passenger seats are the Irizar PB seats even more comfortable than the series ones. Reclining and extendable, with leather side panels and complete with fold-ing armrests, rear handle, footrest and two- three points belts. They are fixed on the raised base next to the corridor, on its turn posi-tioned about 1.5 metres above the ground level and raised by two steps in respect from the driver’s seating position. There are elegant open-ended luggage racks, with external handrail that includes LED whi-te light at two intensities. On the top of the luggage racks, there is a slot for the current distribution of conditioned air coming out the vents also clamped in the perso-nal service set (interspersed by

the speakers) that include LED lights with touch-screen power buttons. For heating reasons there are flo-or convectors powered by Sphe-ros Thermo 300 located behind the door in the rear end on the

right side of the vehicle. There are three flat-screen moni-tors, one of which is embedded in the front part (with digital clock) above the driver’s seat, the second one is attached to the head of the right luggage rack

above the central staircase whi-ch leads to the toilet and the third one is on the left at the partia-lized luggage rack. An elegant and ergonomic Isri pneumatic seat is offered for the driver. •

THE TEST ROUTEPASSENGERS

Confirmation that fuel consumption decreased compared to Euro V was accurate. The irizar i6 covered 342 kilometres from Mi-lan to Genoa and back, consuming on average one litre of diesel fuel every 4.2 kilometres (including the equivalent AdBlue amount) and traveling at an average speed of 82 km/h.Nobody disputes that Scania engines have always been charac-terised by low consu-mption that confirmed both the 12.2-metre long Irizar i6 and its elder brother, reachi-ng the top places in the shortlist of com-petitors still headed by Setra that in the 3-axle category had managed to achieve an excellent result of 4.45 km/litre traveling at the same average speed. But it should be emphasized that the Setra tested by BusToCoach was the S 516 HDH of 13.3 metres that is shorter than our Irizar i6 of 14.37 metres and, what’s more, with a trial weight of 21,100 kg. There is the most potent 13-li-tre Scania Euro VI version

for the Irizar i6 of 14 metres. In other words, it is DC13 125, with 490 hp (360 kW) and a torque of 2,550 Nm. It is characterized by injection system with four valves per cylinder, common-rail with XPI measuring 2,400 bar and the Scania VGT variable geometry turbine air-air. The reduction of pollutant emissions is achieved through the combination of ex-haust gas recirculation (EGR), diesel particulate filter (DPF) and catalyst (SCR) with AdBlue injection. As for the transmis-sion, it is the Scania Opticruise 12-speed automated gearbox, with driving modes selectable between economy, standard and power to make the most of the engine’s performance. It can be completed with the assistance function for hill starts and the ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control). Both braking system (EBS) and

pneumatic suspension (ELC) are electronically controlled and shi-ft the burden on the 3-axle Sca-nia: AMI 700 independent front suspension axle, ADA 130D rear axle and ARA860 steering axle.As always there are very well

accessible technical parts behind the side doors. In rear part on the right side there is an AdBlue tank, flanked by Spheros and by AC compressor. On the left side there are the batteries and elec-trical boxes. •

less compared to i6 is a considerable value. While waiting to test a 14-metre long Setra, it will not be unreasonable to assume a draw in terms of consumption comparison with the Irizar i6.The Irizar under test has got the engine power run by Scania Opticruise 12-speed automa-ted gearbox, that is a guarantee for driving comfort and proper transmission choice, pro-viding you know the right way to use the Eco-nomy functions (in flat sections) and Power (in the most challenging). If you stay in Economy mode even in uphill sections, fuel consum-ption may be affected. The height of almost 4 metres does not affect the i6 driving stability which relies on elec-tronically controlled air suspension, independent front axle and the third axle to favor the low speed maneuvers and allow to turn within a diametre of 23,15 metres.Like in all Irizar models, the luggage com-partment doors are open through a pantograph with pneumatic control. In our case, with a toilet installed, they open to the luggage space of about 9.5 cubic metres with free spaces added above the front and rear wheel arches.Whilst leaving the Irizar PB model range, the-re is a task to give the top tourist services, the Irizar i6 proves to be able to offer passengers an excellent level of comfort, especially as to the vehicle under test that draws from the optional list the Irizar PB seats. •
