SILENT BUS SESSIONS ON VOLVO ELECTRICS

A few weeks ago passengers on the new electric bus route 55 in Gothenburg, Sweden, were taken by surprise by

the Swedish artist Seinabo Sey performing two songs. The music videos were recorded during the session. This is one of the Silent Bus Sessions, a campaign involving some of Swe-den’s hottest artists performing four songs for unsuspecting passengers on the silent bus route 55. The aim of the campaign, launched within the Elec-triCity project in Gothenburg, is to bring further publicity to the electric public transport project. Volvo is one of the project partners and was also involved in creating the Silent Bus Sessions which are going to continue with other artists. Bus route 55 in Gothenburg opened in June 2015 and has three completely electric buses and seven electric hybrid buses, all from Volvo. The electric bus route is a result of the collaborative project ElectriCity between 14 partners in industry, academia and municipal and regional administrations. The collaboration was initiated by Volvo.•

three years with the optimization of weight, further ease of maintenance, increased passenger capacity and reduced

fuel consumption. MAN will also present the new doors for city buses. As for intercity buses, it will be on show for the first time the MAN Lion’s Intercity. Offered as well as for intercity services, long distance transport and school services, it is characterized by its striking and aerodynamic design, its qualities of driving and, in particular, the low fuel consumption and low life cycle cost. MAN will also present in Kortrijk the special versions by the Bus Modification Center (BMC). As the NEOPLAN Cityliner fitted with lounge to encourage dialogue and communication during the trip and a lighting and audio distribution developed specifically for the vehicle. LOWEST BUSES FOR KARLSRUHE

S olaris Bus & Coach delivered four tailor-made Urbinos to Karlsruhe City Transport (Germany). These are the

lowest buses Solaris has manufactured so far with an height of 2,720 mm. The reduced height, which is 330 mm less than in the standard city bus, is due to a viaduct which connects Beiertheim and Bulach districts in Karlsruhe. The interior standing height of the four buses has been raised to 2,290 mm which is 45 mm more than normally. This has been achieved through the relocation of most parts of the air-conditioning unit from the roof to the back of the bus. Designed and built by Solaris, the air-conditioning system provides cooling of the passenger’s compartment and also to the drivers’ cab. This technical innovation was based on Spheros components. Another four unique and tailor-made Solaris Urbino 10.9 LE will be delivered in December 2015. •

THE ALL BLACKS MOVE WITH IVECO

Scania Hispania, the Spanish subsidiary of Scania, and ADO Avanza which is part of the Mexican multinatio-

nal Grupo ADO, signed an agreement for the supply of 64 buses to be delivered in the second half of 2015. Bodied by Castrosua and Irizar, the two and three-axle buses will be used for city, suburban and intercity services. The order includes two Citywide from the Scania range in a length of 12 meters. These three-doors buses are powered by a DC9 engine (250 cv) matched to a Ecolife gearbox and are fitted with platform for disabled passenger and wheelchair ramp, Konvekta Spheros EVO400 air conditioning system (40 kW) and heating by convectors.•

BusToCoach on-line Magazine - October 2015 FLASH NEWS

B erlin celebrated the official opening of the electric bus line with four Solaris Urbino 12 electric buses. The electrical-

ly powered Urbino 12 buses for Berlin have a Bombardier battery set with a capacity of 90 kWh mounted on the roof. Using the inductive PRIMOVE system, the vehicles will be recharged at two of the line 204 terminals. Boasting an output of 200 kW, the recharging process will take just a few minutes, enabling the buses to cover the distance to the next charging station. With the four new buses CO2 emissions will be re-

duced by about 260 tons per year. To achieve the same effect approximately 250 passenger cars in Berlin would have to be electrified. All electric vehicles in BVG’s fleet, including the four Solaris Urbinos, run only on “green power” from renewable energy sources. Berlin’s “E-Bus-Berlin” programme has received funds to the tune of €4.1 million funded by The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. The Technical University of Berlin has supported the project scientifically. •

SYNERGY DOUBLE DECKER IN FRIULI

S even buses of the VDL Synergy range joined the fleet of SAF Autoservizi FVG Spa, Italian transport com-

pany which is part of Arriva group. The double decker buses are used in long-distance connections in Friuli Venezia Giulia region. With this supply, the VDL Sy-nergy buses in SAF fleet amount to 23. These buses are 13 meters long and carry up to 98 passengers, including 82 seated and 16 standing. They also offer a place for a wheelchair and ramp. •

BRIDGESTONE

ALLISON TORQMATIC

TyreLink 2.0 is the new and expanded

version of the European platform for managing orders of tires deve-loped by Bridgestone. A unique platform for all e-solution: best pri-ces, management and monitoring of orders, shipments and invoicing. “The new TyreLink 2.0 offers a range of features and services that previously could not be supplied from a single source. It offers our dealers a clearer view of their business, “said Laurent Dartoux, Senior Vice-President Sales & Marketing, Bridgestone Europe. •

Allison Transmission has expanded the Torqmatic

transmission range introdu-cing three new models. The T1000, T2100 and T2200 fully automatic transmission models replace existing 1000, 2100 and 2200 models availa-ble for minibus, midibus and coach applications across Eu-

rope, Asia-Pacific, Australia and Latin America. The expan-sion of the Torqmatic product family provides customers with a complete range of Allison transmissions featuring the latest product enhancements: the 5th Generation Electronic Controls which delivers optimal shift strategies for superior productivity and efficiency and the FuelSense fuel-efficiency software which can deliver up to 20 percent fuel savings depending on duty cycle. In this way Allison Transmission responds to the increased demand for automatic transmission solutions for bus and coach applications. •

E comotive Solutions, part of Holdim Group

specialized in engine ca-libration, supported the conversion of 30 buses with CNG dual fuel power for the Metrobus transport company based in Johan-

nesburg, South Africa. The operation was carried out by the South African partner Vehicle Gas Solutions. The tran-sformation of this fleet of city buses, whose age is eight years old, is part of a larger project to reduce emissions of the public transport system, which provides for the near future new bus conversions in dual fuel, both the acquisi-tion of new vehicles with low environmental impact. The platform dual fuel ‘d-gid’ developed by Ecomotive Solu-tions is capable of powering a diesel engine simultaneously with a mixture of gases (the methane / biomethane is stored both in compressed form both LNG CNG / LNG liquid, as well as LPG, syngas, hydromethane, etc.) and diesel. “The application of the ‘d-gid’ system does not change the natu-re of the diesel engine and preserve the initial performance and efficiency,” stated Ecomotive Solutions, “also in the absence of gas, the system automatically returns to work with 100% diesel”. •

DUAL FUEL FOR BUSESMAN presents the new

generation of brake assist emergency systems sensors fusion (EBA -Emergency Brake Assist) and the Emergency Stop Si-gnal ESS. In addition, the German company announced that EBA and the new lane control system (LGS -Lane Guard System) will be stan-dard equipment on the vehicles that, starting in November, will includes as compulsory equipment for new registra-tions. Among them, the majority of MAN trucks, MAN and NEOPLAN intercity and tourist buses and MAN chassis for tourist buses. The new generation of MAN Emergency Brake Assist combines information from the radar sensor in the front of the vehicle and the camera on the windshield. Through this “sensor fusion”, the system can reliably in-terpret complex traffic scenarios. The preceding vehicles and fixed objects can be so identified more quickly and safely. This allows the system to gain time and to activate in advance, the emergency brake, if necessary. Moreover, in case of emergency braking, in addition to the stop li-ghts, the emergency stop signal (ESS) also activates the implantation of hazard warning light to a higher frequen-cy, signaling to a vehicle behind the situation emergency. The new LGS system (Lane Guard System) is equipped with the latest camera technology, which allows for gre-ater accuracy in detecting the lane and a minimization of unjustified alerts. •

The second edition dedicated to sustainable mobility returned to the limelight at the motor-vehicle testing track of Modena. It focused on the Italian reality and tested MAN and Neoplan buses

MAN & ZF GREEN DAYW hile the European Mobility Week was

coming to an end, MAN Truck & Bus Italy and ZF gave birth to the second edition of “GreenDay” on September 22. This is an event addressed to Italian public transport operators who were made aware of leading sustainable mobility technologies available today. At the motor-vehicle testing track of Modena it was in fact possible to get on the best vehi-

cles presented by MAN and Neoplan, starting from the new MAN Intercity and Neoplan Skyliner double-decker, and explore together with the ZF technical experts possibilities offered by Eco-Life & As-Tronic automatic transmissions in terms of reduced fuel consu-mption and operating costs. The leaders of major transport companies at-tended the interesting round table aimed at discussing the sustainable mobility issues.

BusToCoach on-line Magazine - October 2015

The participants combined both general the-mes and practical management experience.Gianni Scarfone, general director of ATB Bergamo, emphasized the need of working towards the various forms of public transport financing and informing transport users, of-fering them integrated services of interaction with the client. In his turn, Andrea Bottazzi, technical director of TPER Bologna, clari-fied the development paths for the different bus traction systems, based on the types of operation. This theme was partly resumed by Massimo Bettarello, President of ATV Vero-na, reassuring that the decision on developing the natural gas use, has been already taken for more than a half of his fleet.

Luciano Marchiori, general director of START Romagna, also agreed on the further use of methane, declaring for gaining the positive experience with hydro-methane and transiting to the liquid methane use, which would con-tribute to the priority objective of operating cost control.Piero Sassoli, general director of TIEMME Tuscany Mobility, who is in favor of the gas & electric traction development (though the-re are some concerns about the costs), put his finger on a totally Italian problem: the inadequacy of public financing for the fleet renewal. Moreover, it is unreliable from the availability point of view for the companies.See you next 2016 MAN & ZF GreenDay. • More articles about MAN Truck & Bus: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/503/articoli-costruttore-europa

THE RANGE OF SERVICES FOR THE DAIMLER BUSES CUSTOMERS

There are new proposals from the Omniplus brand at

Busworld in Kortrijk with Bus Depot Management. This service involves authorised workshops rendering their services directly at the customer’s workshop. The operator gets everything from a single source and is consequently able to reduce annual fleet expen-ses by up to 10%.

For the ‘used’, the Daimler Buses BusStore brand (in Euro-pe with 17 centres) launches the App BusStore for direct access to the Internet site www.bus-store.com. Available in 18 lan-guages, the site provides a wide selection of used buses. Also new is the Bus.app for the FleetBoard service. The app now lets users who want to monitor

their buses while away from the office retrieve the most important data. FleetBoard Messaging for buses allows drivers and com-panies to exchange messages, receive geocoded addresses and get navigation instructions strai-ght to the destination. Moreover, the expected time of arrival is calculated and communicated to the head office.

For the first time, Mercedes-Benz Powertrain, the manufactu-rer of assembled units, is also re-presented at the Busworld show (Hall 8) presenting two Euro VI medium and heavy engines by Mercedes-Benz, the fully auto-mated Mercedes PowerShift GO 250-8 eight-speed transmission and the weight-reduced HL6 formed axle. •

ption is reduced by about 15 to 20%. These benefits are due, in addition to the engine downsizing, which now weighs 747 kg (230 kg less than the old 12-litre one), to the hi-gh-tech gas cylinders. Positioned above the front axle (above the central axle on the arti-culated version) they are made of composite material with coating made of carbon fibres and glass fibres. This combination of mate-rials is very lightweight on one hand and hi-ghly robust on the other. Thanks to the incre-ased refill capacity, it therefore requires one tanks less that result in further weight savings The Citaro version powered by natural gas benefits from the latest improvements of the range: the LED headlamps (optional), the folding seats with increased width (single or mother-and-child) and the new articulation angle control system ATC (Articulation Tur-ntable Controller) for the articulated buses.Deliveries of the new Citaro NGT will start in autumn 2015. Full series production will start in spring 2016.For the touring service, Mercedes-Benz will put on show Travego and Tourismo. Both in the 10,000th unit produced. Since last spring the two standard tourist coaches fit AEBS (Advanced Emergency Braking System), whi-ch dramatically reduces the speed in case of danger. There are the new two-way adjustable luxury head restraints (optional). The Tourismo is now available with lift and

wheelchair bays for passengers with reduced mobility. The Travego of the latest version is powered (optional) by the revised OM 471 engine ra-ted at 350 kW (476 hp). The engine’s cues are even more brilliant and reduce power consu-mption.In the spotlight there is the Mercedes Intouro, a model in three lengths that covers a wide range of uses, fitted with the AEBS Emer-gency Braking System and the Lane Depar-ture Warning System. And then there is the Mercedes Sprinter City 65 with the low-floor zone between the axles and padded seats at the rear. For the Setra brand, there will be the su-per-raised S 516 HDH of the TopClass 500 series. It is 13,32-metre long fitted with luxury head restraints, new fibre composition

upholstery, footrest with a wide support base, LED headlamps (optional). On display also the S 431 DT TopClass 400 double-decker bus with Euro VI powertrain of the “Blue Efficiency Power” engine generation. The testimonial of the ComfortClass 500 will be the 10.46-metre S 511 HD in the club-bus version with exclusive equipment and vis-à-vis seats. For intercity service, next to the S 415 LE business of MultiClass 400 will debut the 14.6-metre S 418 LE business with 61 seats.Setra will also present the OM 471 in-line six-cylinder Euro VI engine delivering 350 kW (476 hp), standard on the TopClass 500 models. In the outdoor area Setra will provide for testing various vehicles including an S 515 MD, a medium-decker of the Setra family of

buses within the Setra Comfort Class 500. With a height of 3.56 metres, these coaches combine the passenger compartment of the hi-gh-deckers with lowered substructures. The new Comfort Class 500 MD series covers the segments of tourist services, short journeys and excursions and can optionally be used for shuttle and company in-house transport. •

The new Futura FDD2 will be introduced by VDL Bus & Coach at Busworld in Kortrijk to conquer the field of ‘Double deck coach’ in Europe

A 4-METRE HIGHLIMOUSINE

TO each his own. It seems to be the motto of VDL Bus & Coach, whi-

ch also applies to double-decker buses. The urban Citea DLF-114 (from early October on the roads of Berlin) got near to the multi-purpose Synergy (now mainly aimed at long distance service line) and now it is turn of Futura FDD2 to take the field of intercity services and tourism and it will debut at Busworld in Kortrijk. With the new Futura double-decker, VDL Bus & Coach wants to attack the European ‘double-deck coach’ market, a niche that the past four years has grown to retrieve the va-lues of year 2008 (343 units in 2014) and where VDL strives for increasing its market share (currently it is 9%) in direct compe-tition with the two main competitors: Setra (57%) and Van Hool (32%).Like Synergy, the Futura FDD2 is available

in two lengths, 13.085 metres and 14.145 metres, with capacities of 84 and 96 passen-gers.There is an evident belonging to the Futura family with its arrow-shaped headlights and design elements in the sides and back, iden-tical to Futura FHD2 (just a little ‘higher) as well as dynamically designed rear lights. The height of four metres gave an opportu-nity to create an aerodynamic curved wind-screen consisting of multiple sections to keep replacement costs down in case of damage. The modular construction system used on the Valkenswaard site allows sharing the pre-as-sembled modules, such as the front and rear axles, identical to those of FHD2.The same applies to the sandwich technique to lighten and isolate the roof and floor pa-nels from the upper floor (using an aluminum extrusion profile). In this way it increases the headroom (1,855 mm below and 1,724 mm above), even compared to Synergy double-

decker. It lowers the vehicle’s centre of gra-vity, which results in excellent road-holding.The weight savings can also be found in the interior, newly designed toilette and the ki-tchen unit that help reducing the empty wei-ght and thus increasing transport capacity and reducing fuel consumption. The interior of the Futura FDD2 with the arrangement of seats Class 100 (the most luxurious Class 300 and Class 500 as option) provides a remarkable amount of room to move around as well as two entrance areas and all the rounded furniture corners. The two semi-spiral stairs leading to the upper deck have the lit-up steps and at the second door it is possible to organize space for one or two

wheelchairs. For passengers’ comfort there are central air-conditioning, 19-inch monitors, glass roof hatches and opportunity for custo-mization drawing on devices upon request. Both the 13-metre long and 14-metre long versions offer a luggage space of 8.3 cubic metres based on the rear axle (with a support surface passing through) which extends up to the engine compartment, and closed by three hatches fitted with gas springs plus a door with central locking on the right side. The driver’s workplace has the same stylish dashboard that is found in the other models of Futura-range, accommodating all the ste-ering tools (the central multifunction display, analog instruments, infotainment system and

display showing the camera from the upper deck, navigation system or rearview camera) arranged on a curved horizontal surface to which are added the switches and the digital tachograph in the central part. The console on the driver’s window side includes other switches, climate control panel and selector knob for the ZF AS Tronic automatic gear-box (manual intervention is possible via the lever on the steering column, which also serves as the retarder control). The steering wheel also includes controls for the radio, phone and cruise control. The seat and the steering column are adju-stable to accommodate drivers of any height and the air conditioning is separated. The upward viewing is increased through the upper-deck floor sloped upwards at the windscreen while the indirect field of vision is provided with the help of a full set of mir-rors mounted on folding arms at a height of two metres. The Futura FDD2 is powered by a 12.9 li-tre DAF / Paccard MX-13 engine delivering 510 hp (375 kW) and 2,500 Nm of torque. It is a six-cylinder engine with a common-rail injection system that allows high pressures (up to 2,500 bar), variable geometry turbo-charger (VGT) and system to reduce pollu-tants consisting of partial gas recirculation (EGR) with AdBlue injection catalytic re-duction (SCR) and particulate filter. • More articles about VDL Bus & Coach: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/529/articoli-costruttore-europa

O nce again, the Travego is painted in yellow (like in year 2006 and 2013)

to show the safety system development progress of the Mercedes tourist coaches. A two-axle, 12.2-metre long Travego with a stylized ‘S’ on the side walls also un-derlines the ‘Safety Coach’ features with all the safety systems currently available for buses.

The unsurpassed safety equipment on the Travego, starting from first-generation of year 1999, is based on its electronic braking system EBS, which reduces the reaction time to the command and consequently the braking distance. The EBS includes the ABS anti-lock braking system, ASR acceleration skid control, BA Brake Assist (standard since 2003) and DBL Continuous Braking Limiter (introduced in 2004), which brakes the vehicle by means of the retarder when the statutory downhill speed limit of 100 km/h is exceeded.

W ith an interior corre-sponding to four-star

rating (classification of the German GBK), the Travego Safety Coach offers its 44 pas-sengers an optimal combina-tion of comfort and safety. Travel Star Xtra seats, air conditioning system (32 kW) with additional individually adjustable air conditioning for the driver’s area (6 kW), roof hatches with rain sensor, audio-video system with three 19-inch monitors, kitchen, toi-let and two refrigerators. The requirements for roll-over re-sistance in accordance with ECE R 66 have been com-plied with since the Travego first generation in 1999.Front Collision Guard (FCG) has been introduced since 2008. It is a passive safety system designed to protect the driver and tour guide

that in the event of a front impact slides backwards all the driving position increasing the available driver’s survival space. Seat belt detection for both the driver’s and tour guide’s seats excludes the possibility of involuntary driving

without seat belt fastened. The external visibility comes courtesy of powerful xenon he-adlamps and fog lamps with cor-nering light function in addition to the multiple exterior mirrors and reversing camera.

Attention Assist (ATAS) intro-duced in 2012 issues a warning if the driver is tired, instructing him to take a break. The Brea-th analyzer is the only thing that lacked in Travego Safery Coach, but you can always ask for it. •

There is therefore the combination with the ESP Electronic Stability Program (optio-nal in 2002 and fitted as standard the next year), which operates the brake system in the event of critical displacement of the vehicle gravity center. To prevent dangerous instability, engine torque is initially reduced and, following this, individual wheels are braked by precisely the right amount. To reduce driver’s fatigue on motorwa-ys and hi-g h w a y s , t h e r e i s t hen the A d a p t i -ve Cruise C o n t r o l ( A C C ) , m o u n t e d on the Tra-vego since 2004 . I f the system detects a slower-mo-ving vehi-cle travel-ling ahead, it automati-cally brakes the coach until a speed-depen-dent distance defined by the driver has been reached and then maintains this distance. To this end, the road surface in front of the vehicle is scanned at 50-millisecond inter-vals by a distance sensor, which uses three radar beams to measure the distance to and relative speed of the vehicles in front. If there is no vehicle ahead, the system works like a conventional cruise control system. Thanks to additional “stop and go” function the functionality expands. Whereas ACC operates in a speed range from 15 to 100 km/h, the additional function extends that from 0 to 100 km/h. If the vehicle is at a standstill for no longer than two seconds, the distance controller remains active even in slow-moving traffic below 15 km/h and will take the coach from a standstill back to the previously specified speed.Since 2008, ACC has added the support sy-stem for emergency braking ABA (Active

470 engine with common-rail in-jection and pressure booster (X-

Pulse) to reduce fuel consump-tion and pollutant emissions. With regard to Euro VI standard, SCR technology is combined with AdBlue injection and cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) along with particulate filter (to be replaced after 360 thousand km).It makes available an output of 315 kW (428 hp) and maximum torque of 2,100 Nm from 1,000 rpm. Power is transferred by the automated Mercedes GO 250-8 eight-speed PowerShift transmis-sion.The powertrain operation can be optimized by PPC (Predicti-ve Powertrain Control) that on

the basis of topographic data and detected vehicle parameters selects the most appropriate tran-smission to balance performance and fuel economy. Further help comes to the driver by the Eco Driver Feedback that provides personalized feedback on the driver’s driving style. To leave nothing up to chance, the Travego Safety Coach is fit-ted with sprinkler system pipe detection in the engine compart-ment and tyre pressure monito-ring system (TPMS) indicating inflation pressure of each tire on the central display of the instru-ment panel. •

Brake Assist) that detects through the ACC sensors an acute risk of a rear-end collision with a slower-moving vehicle in front. It emits a series of warnings before initiating full brake application. From 2012 the development continued with adoption of ABA2 which is not only able to initiate emergency braking manoeuvres if the risk of a rear-end collision with a moving vehi-cle in front was detected, but also initiate a braking manoe-uvre in the case of stat ionary obstacles, such as a sudden queue on the motorway redu-cing the impact velocity. Two years later, in 2014, there is a further evolu-tion (ABA3), which indepen-dently initiates full brake ap-plication. The system not only dramatically reduces the consequences of a serious accident, but can also prevent collisions themselves. The new Active Brake Assist 3 is fitted as standard on the Travego, in case the custo-mer has also ordered the Adaptive Cruise Control. There are other safety measures available for the Travego since 2004 (standard from next November): the SPA, the Lane Assi-stant using cameras mounted behind the windscreen that continuously monitors the distance between the coach and the marker lines at the edge of the lane. If the vehi-cle is about to cross the marker lines, the relevant side of the driver’s seat starts to vibrate to warn the driver. The Lane Assistant is not activated until the vehicle exceeds a speed of 70 km/h and is deactivated when the driver indicates to change lanes intentionally. •
