  • PARALYMPIC WITH THE DAILY

T hats a years long relationship that started in 1980 with the Moscow Olympics and that culminated with the 2006 Winter Games in Turin. Not to mention the many sponsor-ship and collaboration activities. The latest, in order of time, consists in the delivery of two Iveco Daily Combi to FISIP, the Italian

Winter Sports Paralympics Federation. The two vehicles will be used for the transport of Paralympic athletes to international competitions scheduled from December to March. The company supports the Paralympic champions as a model of perseverance, team spi-rit and enthusiasm, reads a statement by Iveco, accompanying them to the Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014.

    ROSI REISENRENEWAL

The German bus operator Rosi Reisen, which celebrated its 40th anniversary, renewed the fleet with Mercedes-Benz touring coaches. A dozen buses were handed over by the company based in North-Rhine Westphalia (one of the most populous states of Germany). They are 10 Tourismo and 2 Travego. All the vehicles are in the distinctive Rosi retro-design with which the companys vehicles started touring in the early 80s. Today, the German company operates a fleet of 85 buses, 25 of which are touring coaches and 60 intercity and regular service buses.

    ELECTRIC TEST AT THE AIRPORT

Setra delivers the 750th S 411 HD to Austria. The anniversary vehicle was handed over by Neubauer, a family run company based in Up-per Austria and specialized in tours, excursions, school bus services and transport of disabled persons. The coach is fitted with 39 comforta-ble seats and is equipped with the main safety systems, including the Adaptive Cruise Control

(ACC). The S 411 HD is the most compact touring coach (10.16 meters long) of the Setra TopClass range produced since 2001.

    750 FOR THES 411 HD

During its demonstration tour of Germany, the Solaris Urbino electric bus was tested at the Flughafen Hamburg Airport. The features of the Solaris battery-powered bus were put under test at the Hamburg Airports subsidiary Spe-cial Transport and Ramp Services (STARS). It was an opportunity for Solaris to experience the specific operational requirements of passenger transport within an airport facility and how these can be met by an electric bus. Hamburg Airport is committed to eco-friendliness, as demonstrated by the purchase of six Solaris NGV Urbino 12 currently in use by STARS airside and on car park shuttles.

    MORE SETRA FOR SIEKE KG

The fleets renewal of the German Sieke KG based in Hessen is continuing in the name of the Setra brand. After six touring coaches of the ComfortClass 400 series delivered in December 2011 and a S 431 DT double decker delivered in March 2012, Sieke handed over five S 415 UL intercity buses. The vehicles are intended for scheduled services in Wal-deck-Frankenberg, the rural district of the German state of Hessen. But, if necessary, the vehicles will also be used for school excursions or occasional chartered journeys.

    EURO VI IN RHINELAND

A couple of Mercedes Travego Edition 1 buses powered with Euro 6 engines were handed over by the German bus operator Omnibus GmbH und Reiseverkehr Laschke. They are the first touring coaches for the Rhi-neland with environmentally friendly Euro VI engines. They are powered by the new OM 471 BlueEfficiency Power engines whose 12.8

l of displacement supply 350 kW (476 hp) at 1800 rpm. The transmission is the automa-ted eight-speed GO 250-8 PowerShift. The coaches are featured with an ergonomically enhanced cockpit as well as the latest safety systems and a large seat spacing of 90 cen-timetres for passengers. In addition to the two Mercedes Travego, the German operator handed over a S 416 GT HD of the Setra ComfortClass 400 range.

Irisbus Iveco buses for GTT in Turin

Make way for the YoungTOURIN Transport Group (GTT), the company that provides urban, suburban and intercity public transport services in the capital of Piedmont and transporting about 200 million passengers a year on board of its vehicles, is renewing its bus fleet.Last Decem-ber the first four Iveco range Citelis and Crossway buses were delivered as part of a lar-ger order for 182 vehicles commiss io-ned by the GTT.The supply includes 96 12 metre Citelis urban buses, 19 12 metre Low Entry suburban Crossway buses and 67 Crossway intercity buses in the lengths of 10.7 and 12 metres. All vehicles are equipped with diesel engines that meet EEV standards and will be in service by January 2013.

Onboard equipment includes air conditioning, video surveillance system and a wheelchair area with boarding ramp. Furthermore the vehicles are equipped with a passenger infor-mation system and LED lighting. The new buses have been purchased thanks

to a co-finan-cing agree-ment between the Piedmont Region and Turin Tran-sport Group with the in-tent to reju-venate the c o m p a n y s fleet and thus allowing the dismissal of all vehicles with Euro 0 engine.

The fleet renewal initiated by GTT in 2010 has led to the introduction of 364 new buses and a consequent reduction of the average age of the vehicles: for urban buses it decreased from 11.6 to 9.6 years while for suburban buses from 13.3 to 8.8 years.

The capital of the Piedmont Italian region receives the first Iveco Citelis and Crossway from an order of 182 new

buses acquired by Turin Transport Group

  • F ederal-Mogul Corporation (Mitchigan, USA) deve-loped a new coating for hea-vy-duty diesel engines. Called IROX, its an innovative poly-mer coated bearing shell that allows you to increase durabi-lity and engine efficiency whi-le reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. A further

advantage is given by the absence of lead in the material thus minimizing the environmental risks. The material used for these engine bearings makes use of a spine of steel co-vered with a sintered coating consisting of a matrix made of copper/tin/bismuth reinforced with hard particles. IROX coating is applied on top of it. IROX is a polymer resin bin-der containing a number of additives dispersed throughout the matrix. The new formulation is scheduled for mass production in 2013 of models that will be launched on the market next year.

K orean company Camos offers the sat-dome in-motion satellite antenna CSA-2300M with automatic search and tracking of re-ception on the move, espe-cially designed for touring coaches. Measuring 69.5 cm in diameter, with an overall height of only 29.5 cm and weighting 10.1 kg, the antenna system is combined with a control box with a central LCD display for the selection of signals transmitted by major European satellites (Astra1 and 2, Hotbird, Sirius, Atlamtik, Bird3 and Hispasat). The integrated universal LNB (Low Noise Block Converter) en-sures the reception of a large number of channels. Other technical features include: 10.7-12.75 GHz frequency ran-ge, 33 dBi gain, unlimited azimuth, 17-60 elevation, 27W maximum power consumption, operating temperatures from -22 to 55.The product range for buses by Camos also includes displays and rear view cameras marketed by IMC GmbH and local distributors in most European countries.

A fter its initial application on private vehicles, the Valeo Aquablade wiper is now available also for buses. The innovation of this wiping system consists in a flat blade with an integrated washing function along the full length of the blade with spray release synchronised with the position of the arm. This way, the integrated nozzles enable the washer fluid to be distributed evenly all along the blade, regardless of the speed of the bus or the verticality of the windshield. Immediately after being deposited, the fluid is wiped away, so that visibi-lity is not compromised. The washing fluid is sprayed where it is needed, when it is needed and in the exact quantity re-

quired, thus making use of only half the liquid usually required.

    AQUABLADE FOR BUS

Designed to provide passen-gers with ergonomic and comfortable seats, while con-taining operating costs, Ciclo seats for buses by Esteban are built on an anti-vandal structu-ral framework that incorporates a full width top handle and a lateral armrest. Manufactured with innovative materials, the seat combines strength with low weight (23 kg per double seat including one pedestal and side fixing). The seat shell can be customised in different colours and the upholstered cushions and backrests are ea-sily changeable. The standard equipment model features a polyamide shell reinforced by glass fibre available in light grey, red or yellow with integrated black or yellow handgrip. Optional features include upholstered cushion and backrest, fixed or movable armrest and bar support integrated in the handgrip. Maximum overall dimensions are 557 mm in depth and 925 mm width for the two seater.

THE range is complete. After the in-troduction last year of the X In-city XZU for city buses, the X Multiway 3D series for intercity and medium-range buses has been completed while the X Coach HL Z for coaches was added to the products list. Now the X Multiway 3D tyres range also in-cludes the 295/80 R 22.5 fitment size in two versions. The XZE for all positions (with four channels and three-dimensional deep cut Delta sipes oriented towards rolling direction to avoid wear), and the XDE for use on drive axles featuring high resistance TowerPump, double wave and raindrop siping to provide maximum traction on surfaces with poor grip. Michelin claims that these tyres can last up to 30% longer and provide fuel savings of 0.5 litres per 100 km.Designed as an all-round fitment, the X Coach HL Z comes in the standard fit of 295/80 R 22.5 with four wide longitudinal grooves, and thanks to the InfiniCoil technology consisting in a steel cord that wraps continuously around the crown, it delivers more even wear and a greater longevity.

VDO a company of Continental Corporation, presents Downloadpoint, the new self-ser-vice terminal in the size of a laptop with a 15 touchscreen that offers a convenient data download service either direc-tly from the Driver Card, thanks to the built-in reader, or from the data download key (VDO Downloadkey), via a USB port. Downloadpoint was developed specifically for Digital Partners, a network of VDO authorised workshops, offering a complete digital tachograph data management service for fleet managers and for operators.Drivers make use of VDO Downloadpoint for safe and independent storage of tachograph data on a VDO ser-ver and, upon request to a training centre manager, they can get an overview of their activities and print out, for example, the list of offences in relation to driving and rest times. IN order to have our vehicles tyres under constant monitoring, Continental developed VDO bran-ded TPMS sensors (Tire Pressure Monitoring System), small size devices that are fitted with a radio frequency transmitter, housed in the inner part of the rims and inte-grated with the inflation valves.VDO sensors are able to detect, in particular, values per-taining pressure, the temperature of the tire and the char-ging level of the internal battery and to transmit them via radio signals, at a frequency of 434 Mhz. They are fitted with a tiny battery that is designed to last about 5-7 years, in order to cover the entire average life span of a tyre.

  • The first Citaro C2 in Italy

    Under the TREE

THE first 12.1 metre Mercedes Citaro C2 sold in Italy carries the logo of Autoguidovie. Founded in 1908, Autogui-dovie is one of the main public transport ope-rators nationwide, with 94 urban and suburban service lines spread across three different re-gions of central and northern Italy. It counts on 471 buses for 17.7 million bus-km traveled per year; the figures go up to 1,600 and 62 million respectively if one considers total operations of the joint venture signed this past year between Autoguidovie and BUSItalia Sita-Nord (Italian State Railway Company).

With vehicles that have an average age of six years, the Autoguidovie bus fleet is made up by 45% of vehicles with Euro V or EEV en-gines and about 80% are Mercedes. Therefore the strong appreciation for the Ger-man brand could not leave one insensitive towards the latest version of the well known Citaro model: thus we could touch firsthand of the innovative changes that it underwent. The only aspect of the Autoguidovies Citaro C2 that is not ahead of its time is the engi-ne, for it is entrusted to the 6.4 litre Om 906 hLA of 285 horsepower (210 kW) that meets

The latest generation Citaro sold in Italy was seen at the new Autoguidovie headquarters in San Donato Milanese in

December. A good omen for the new year

EEV standards thanks to a particulate filter at the exhaust, instead of opting for the Euro VI with the new 7.7 litre OM 936 engine.Intended for suburban services in the provin-ce of Bergamo, the Citaro comes in the two double-doors configuration that give access to a lowered floor (with a corridor at the back). It fits 36 padded seats, fixed to the floor or on high bases in the rear, that leave room for the wheelchair area in front of the door (equipped

with a manual platform) and for another 61 standing passengers. Among the many safety and comfort features worth noting there are: enhanced air conditioning, tinted side win-dows, windshield absorbing UVA radiations, vehicle tracking system and audio/video stops announcement, compliance with R 77 Directi-ve for the interior (see the numerous additional handrails) and the anti-intrusion bar at the front to protect the driver in case of a collision.

The driver benefits from a raised dri-vers area, accessible by a forward opening door and with an electric horizontal sliding side window.Everything else de-monstrates attention to details, quality and reliability.

The 500th Mercedes-Benz Citaro of the PostBus. The milestone vehicle was de-livered last December to the

Swiss public transport opera-tor in the distinctive yellow/red livery of PostBus. Its a 18-metre-long Citaro G ar-ticulated bus powered by an OM 457 hLA (354 hp) diesel engine taht, with its closed-loop particulate fil-ter, complies with the emis-sions standards Euro V as well as EEV. The vehicle is fitted with three doors, a completely separate drivers

seat, a roof-mounted air con-ditioning system with sepa-rate control of temperature, two double TFT monitors for passengers information. Post-Bus is the leading bus com-pany in Switzerlands public transport network with more than 120 million passengers transported each year and a fleet of more than 2,100 ve-hicles, of which a third are Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

  • THE interiors of the City-wide are bright and well cared for. The configuration of the passengers compartment is the same as the one found in the Omnicity, with jumbo seats or with double rows of seats cantile-vered on the walls in the central part of the vehicle and mounted on high bases at the back. In ad-dition to three seats beneath the rear window, next to the engine compartment on the right hand side angle. It fits a total of 32 seats plus wheelchair area opposite the central entrance door with manual platform embedded in the floor.Onboard air conditioning is con-trolled by two units mounted on the roof (separate ones for passen-gers and for the driver) which are powered by a single Bitzer com-pressor: air is distributed through slots facing inwards and towards the side windows. Additional air vents located under the tiles are part of the switchable ventilation system. Floor convectors powered by a Spheros preheater take care of additional heating. The driver benefits from: an ele-vated area, a pneumatic Isri seat

and a new VDV standard com-pliant dashboard that is adjusta-ble along with the steering wheel. The dashboard includes a central multifunction display and buttons spread across the two sides and a gearshift keyboard on the right

block. Other control switches, in-cluding those for the route indica-tor, parking brake and controller of air conditioning and heating are located underneath the dri-vers side window, which opens manually.

INTERIORSManufactured in the Scania plant in Slupsk, Poland, the new Citywide buses stand out because they are built on an aluminium bo-dywork whose extruded profiles, bolted and coated on the roof and on the sides, are made of aluminium panels riveted and glued onto it. Aluminium is also used for the front and back ends together with polyurethane and shock-absorbing polyester panels.Compared to the OmniCity the most obvious differences are found on the front, where the dominant element is the dark inverted trape-zoidal panel below the windshield, first in-troduced with the Tou-ring series and that has become the characteri-stic hallmark of Scania buses since. Likewise the removable front li-ght units, with high visi-bility and durability H1 modules for beam lights and with a LED combi-ned lamps for position lights, daytime running lights and direction in-dicators.The new looking front comes either in the Slim Top style, to include the route indicator, measu-ring up to 1,850 mm in width, or in the slightly protruding Extended Top style, with indicator panels, up to 2,030 mm wide. And finally, there is the 3-section bumper with memory function that resumes its ori-ginal shape after minor impact bumps. The rear aspect of the bus, on the other hand, remains rather unchanged, with the characte-ristic inverted trapezoidal rear window, LED tail lamps and a large engine hatch. When the shift towards Euro VI engines will be im-plemented, the aspect of the rear of the bus will change due to the elimination of the rear window and the relocation of the exhaust gas pipe to the roof (right now it is on the left side). In order to comply with the new exhaust emission standards, while preserving the platform basic characteristics, the new 9.3 litre Scania DC9 engine will have to make

  • A head of the shift to Euro VI, the Citywide is presented with the well-known DC9 of 280 horsepower (206 kW) meet-ing the EEV emission standard thanks to EGR technology for the partial recirculation of gas-es (in combination with a VGT variable geometry turbine), with the addition of a diesel particu-late filter at the exhaust. The transverse rear-mounted 9.3 litre engine with high pres-sure common-rail injection Sca-nia XPI is located on the rear compartment. Drive belts for auxiliary components are easily accessible from the right side opening. Above, there are the air plugs for the radiator of the electronically controlled cooling system. The engine works in combination with a six-speeds ZF Ecomat automatic transmis-sion with retarder incorporated and NBS system (Neutral at Bus Stop) that automatically sets the vehicle in neutral gear in the event of prolonged stopping periods, in order to reduce fuel

consumption. An angular transmission delivers motion to the rear axle with over-turned portal, made by Scania, as is the front axle drive. The electronically controlled ELC air suspensions include a device that lowers the floor by 110 mm on the doors side (kneeling) and also a 70 mm raise/lower system applicable at speeds inferior than 30 km/h.The electronically controlled EBS braking system also inclu-des ABS, ASR and TC (Traction Control). ESP is available on re-

quest. The vehi-cle mounts Knorr self-ventilating disc brakes whose pads wearing is automatically controlled and reported on the dashboard di-splay. Finally, it is equipped with a vehicle lock system when doors are open (can be switched off).

use of SCR exhaust gases after-treatment by means of AdBlue injection, in combination with EGR recirculation for powers up to 280 hp. Higher powers will not require EGR.For the time being, the mechanic of the Ci-tywide resembles that of the Omnicity, star-ting with the five-cylinders DC9 engine with 280 hp, EEV standard compliant thanks to the partial recirculation (EGR) of exhaust gases, without the need for additives. Thats the case also for operation on diesel engines, as well as biodiesel, CGN, biogas and bioethanol. The entire bus is insulated with panels made of mineral wool en-suring a low noise levels while onboard the running vehicle. The interiors feature light coloured plastic laminate coatings with aluminium cover strips on the walls, perforated aluminium pa-nels for the roof, and plastic ma-terial for the ceiling air canals and stainless steel glazed handrails. The drivers area has been com-pletely redesigned, with the seat raised at about 25 cm and deli-mited by a low lateral access-gate with magnetic lock (the full-len-gth version is available as optio-nal) and by a back panel-wall that is transparent at the top.The dashboard is also new, deve-loped according to VDV ergono-mic standards and integrated with the adjustable steering column. Above the drivers seat theres now a removable panel at the edge of the windshield that provides access to the bus route indicator. Also in the front ceiling, theres the hinged panel with the central electric controls for chassis and bo-dywork and with fuses that can be manually replaced. The windshield defrosting system has also been revisited, with flush nozzles which blow the air from the bottom upwards to increa-se the speed of defrosting while keeping the window dry to ensure optimum direct visi-bility. For backwards visibility there is a left rear-view mirror fixed to the base of the side window to increase the viewing angle range and there is also a second mirror for frontal area viewing mounted on the right arm. quello che successo nella selezione
