OPTARE FOR PERRYMAN’S

O ptare completed delivery of the largest ever bus order placed by North East

independent Perryman’s Buses, with the handover of 12 of its Versa model to the family-run firm. The 11.7 metre Versas fea-ture leather trimmed seats, wood-effect flo-or covering, a nine camera CCTV system

from TTS, Telit in-cab communications system supplied by Cellular Solutions, and Mo-bitec ‘next stop’ audio-visual announcement equipment. Power is from the six-cylinder Cummins ISBe engine rated at 201 bhp (150 kW). The engine is matched to a five-speed Allison automatic transmission. •

VOLVO FOR THE UK

THE final three new Volvo B11R coaches of an eight vehicles order from

Golden Tours in the UK, have been delivered to the London based operator. The eight 53-seat co-aches are specified with the Jonckheere bodywork option. The vehicles will be operating across the company’s extensive tour programme, which in-cludes passenger excursions in London, as well as tourist hotspot locations. All of Golden Tours’ new Volvo coaches feature standard specification seating, an onboard toilet, TV screens, CD/DVD player and a servery. The Volvo B11R is fitted with the fuel efficient 11-litre Volvo D11C six cylinder diesel engine and the I-Shift gearbox. Two thirds of the Golden Tours fleet is Volvo manufactured. •

LION’S CITYIN SWITZERLAND

THE small electric bus Ale produced in Italy by Rampini Spa, has been

seen again on the European streets. After the first units entered service in Nice and Vienna, a vehi-cle arrived last July in Finland for drive tests and demonstrations with passengers on board.Another Ale has been involved in a demonstration tour in Budapest until mid-September. The Ale is powered by a Siemens electric engine (85/150 kW) with a Siemens DC-IGBT Inverter and lithium ferrite batteries (180 kWh).The running autonomy declared by the manufacturer is 130/150 km in the urban cycle. •

ALÈ ELECTRICIN FINLAND

P ostBus Switzerland, the leading provider of ro-ad-based passenger transport in Switzerland,

chooses once again buses with the MAN brand. The last order comprises 85 MAN Lion’s City buses, both standard and articulated versions in low-floor design. The vehicles will be supplied by MAN Truck & Bus Switzerland AG over the next two years. Delivery of the first vehicles will take place in April 2014. MAN Lion’s City buses comply with the Euro VI exhaust-gas stan-dard through the six-cylinder common-rail diesel engines with outputs of 320 and 360 hp. The buses are fitted with air-conditioning, wheelchair ramps and seating for passengers with restricted mobility. The PostBus fleet currently consists of around 2,100 vehicles, of which 560 are buses of the MAN and NEOPLAN brands. •

SOLARIS ARRIVES IN TURKEY

Solaris Bus&Coach has received its first order from the Turkish market. In mid-September the

Bolechowo-based manufacturer signed an agree-ment for the delivery of 100 Solaris low-floor city buses. The buses will be delivered to ESHOT, the Izmir’s municipal bus operator which runs a fleet of 1,600 buses on 320 routes. All of the 100 buses will be 18-metre articulated vehicles. They will have low floor throughout the entire bus and will be equipped with air conditioning and engines me-

eting the Euro 5 emissions standard. Delivery will take place in the first months of 2014. •

M ore than 1,600 cities from around the world, of which 105 in Italy, participa-

ted to the European Mobility Week, an initia-tive aimed at sustainable mobility promoted by the European Commission that took pla-ce September 16-22. In this context, Reggio Emilia (Italy) was the chosen location for a joint presentation by Voith and Man about environmental compatibility. In the fore-ground, a 12-metre Lion’s City with Euro VI natural gas engine with Voith Diwa 854.5 automatic transmission with four speeds plus

reverse gear, and thus reduced emissions and great energy efficiency. Presenting the cha-racteristics of the DIWA.5 transmission, re-cently chosen to equip the 337 Iveco buses that will modernise the fleet of the Public Transport Company of the city of Rome, Voith’s representatives insisted on efficiency and low running costs. To note that in Italy there are 2,300 buses on service with Voith Diwa transmission, of which 50 % are Man.The distinctive feature of the DIWA.5 au-tomatic transmission is the central positio-

ning of the differential torque-converter group with secondary retarder, to allow the combina-tion of mechanical and hydrodynamic energy during starting. This way, the starting gear is long and is equivalent to the first two gears of conventional automatic transmissions.Gear changes are redu-ced to up to 50%, with consequent lowering of peak loads on the tran-smission, and therefore

On show a 12-metre Lion’s City with Man CNG Euro VI engine featuring a Voith DIWA.5 automatic transmission.

Efficiency and economical operating costs

Fitted as standard on Mercedes Tra-vego Euro VI and the new 500 Se-ries by Setra, the Aquatarder SWR is the first secondary retarder in the wor-ld that uses water as braking liquid. Instead of oil, it makes use of the engine’s cool ing water and therefore

it does not require a heat exchanger nor maintenance: no additional oil or

coolant changes and no adjustme-nts are required. It occupies 50% less installation space compared to an hydrodynamic re-tarder and weighs only 42 kg. With a braking power of 3,500 Nm, it carries out up to 90% of all vehicle braking operations. •

VOITH AQUATARDER SWRgreater durability and economic operating costs at low speeds.Other features of the latest generation DIWA.5 are the elimination of external flexible piping and valves positioning above the gearbox (more easily accessible) and their ability to electronically adjust pressure on the lamellar pack to optimise shift changes while avoiding tearing and slippage. There is also the ANS (Automatic Neutral at Standstill) to minimise consumption at bus stops and the HTSD fluid coupling to lower the number of revolutions during gear chan-ges.The E 300.1 Electronic Control Unit records all operating data and the SensoTop topo-

graphic-dependent shifting program optimise gear changes for better performance and fuel economy. And finally, there is the Aladin diagnosis and analysis software to simplify maintenance, integrated with SmartNet telemetry system for continuous monitoring of the transmis-sion status. All this can also be found on the new range of automatic transmissions Voith Diwa.6 adapted to the needs of Euro VI engines. We have already seen them at work on the new Mercedes Citaro in operation since early this year, and they will also be mounted on the upcoming 217 Citaros with destination Vienna. •

a new series of window adhesives during the Busworld fair in Kortrijk. The Sabatack 760 series consists of two pro-ducts, with extended open times and high initial tack. The Sabatack 760 series have been tested in accordance with the FMVSS 212, the most important crash test in the automobi-le industry. It’s also Wheelmark certified and products that are Wheelmark certified must meet strict quality and (fire) safety requirements. Visitors to the Busworld 2013 can reach SABA at stand 826. •

AWARD FOR ZIEHLC ontiPressureCheck is the tire pressure monitoring system developed by Continental, global manufac-

turer of tires, brake systems and vehicle stability con-trol technology, as well as components for cars, trucks and buses. ContiPressureCheck combines Continental’s

experience in sensor tech-nology, instrumentation and tires. Making use of Continental’s expertise in those areas, the system not only provides accurate data on tire pressure and tempe-rature, but, for fleet opera-

tors it is also a valuable tire management system and indicator of fuel consumption, thus contributing to the reduction of operating costs. The system works with all tire brands and on all vehicles. Installation is simple, a rubber holder is glued to the in-side of the tire tread. The receiver is permanently moun-ted on the vehicle frame. When the tire is replaced, the transmitter can be removed from the holder and reused.“The transmitter is supplied with energy by a battery with a life of six years or approximately 600,000 km,” explains Jörg Lehmann, head of development of Con-tiPressureCheck system at Continental. “The processor continuously records the air pressure and tire temperature readings delivered by the sensors and transmits the tire data wirelessly to the receiver in the bus or truck and tra-iler at regular intervals. The electronic control unit sends the evaluated data to the display in the driver’s cab. The driver can thus monitor the condition of his tires in real time.”In case of discrepancies between the specified and the actual tire pressure, the driver is alerted, enabling him to inflate the tire to the correct pressure level. If the air pressure suddenly drops, the system will issues an alarm in a matter of seconds.ContiPressureCheck was tested in 2012 on more than 30 fleets of trucks, trailers and buses in Europe and the USA. Over 20 percent of the vehicles suffered from wheel fau-lts during testing, including problems with the wheel rims and wheels damaged due to puncturing by nails and fau-lty valves. In all cases, the faults were detected and rec-tified in good time thanks to the tire pressure monitoring system. •

HIGHT Efficiency

In addition to the Urbanway, the new range of city buses, Iveco will parade the Crossway and the Magelys with the new Tector 7 and Cursor 9 engines with Hi-eSCR to meet Euro VI

I veco Bus has several presentations in store for the 22nd edition of Busworld Kortrijk. In

the 1,200 square metres big exhibit space boo-ked in Hall 3 (plus the additional outdoor area), it will be possible to take a look at the full range equipped with the new Euro VI engines. Ten vehicles will be showcased. In evidence,

the brand new Urbanway, the 13-metre Cros-sway and the jewel in the crown of Iveco’s touring coaches: the Magelys. The Euro VI range by Iveco Bus mounts the new Tector 7 and Cursor 9 engines deve-loped by FPT Industrial. These engines have a better performance in terms of power and

torque as well as reduced fuel consumption. According to the manufacturer, the decrease is between 5 and 10 per cent compared to a vehicle with Euro V engine. To comply with the new exhaust emission standards, the engines make use of the ca-talytic reduction system Hi-eSCR (High Ef-ficiency SCR) patented by FPT Industrial, with optimised combustion inside the engine by means of aspiration of external fresh air only. Therefore there is no need for the re-circulation of exhaust gases, since emission levels are guaranteed by the post-treatment process downstream the engine.Further improvements pertain to the optimisa-tion and the upgrade of transmission lines, as well as the reduction of the vehicle’s weight. With the transition from Euro V to Euro VI the Tector changes from 5.9 to 6.7 litres and the Cursor from 7.8 to 8.7 litres. And now, let’s take a closer look at the vehi-cles themselves. Starting with the Urbanway, the city bus replacing the Citelis, focusing on a more aggressive outlook, less weight and less fuel consumption as well as grea-ter comfort. Presented for the first time last spring at the UITP exhibition in Geneva with a Cursor 9 engine, at Busworld it will be presented with a Tector 7 with 286 hp in longitudinal architecture and with 10 per cent increased passenger capacity.

For the Crossway range, there will be a Class II 13-metre version model with a capacity of 63 passengers. The transition of the Crossway to Euro VI, in addition to optimised new len-gths (especially for the 13-metre size), led to a 50 percent reduction in noise and to an improvement of on-board comfort, also be-nefitting the driver thanks to a 10 cm longer driver’s cab due to a longer front overhang, a new instrument panel and a driver’s seat that can turn up to 65 degrees. The spotlight will also shine on the top of the touring range Magelys. A vehicle model that is now available with Cursor 9 Euro VI engi-ne and that, in addition to weight reduction, it benefits from a new power-train, whose drive ratio can be chosen as suited for intended use.And finally, there will be an unidentified ‘world premiere’. That goes to prove Iveco Bus ability to innovate. •

Solaris at Busworld Kortrijk

Three enginesFIT ALL

S olaris participation to Busworld Kortrijk will be focused on engines. Hidden behi-

nd the hoods of an 18-metre Urbino and a 12-metre InterUrbino, these engines stand in for the transition of the entire range to Euro VI standards.Narrowing down the field of engine brands to Daf/Paccard and Cummins (already Solaris partners) and abandoning previous options on global suppliers, such as Man and Iveco, the Polish manufacturer made a simple choice, consistent with its identity as an independent manufacturer.

Thus, Solaris moves forward on a paved road, strong of the good results achieved on dome-stic and international markets that will allow them to end 2013 with over 1,200 vehicles sold (in 2012 they amounted to 1,006). The first export market for Solaris is Germany (over 2,000 Solaris buses in circulation) where the Solaris market share reached 12.9 percent in 2012.These results encouraged the Polish manu-facturer to look forward with optimism, so much that it invested 3.3 million Euro for the construction of a new production site of 7,100

square me-tres in Środa Wielkopolska .Back on the new Euro VI engines. So-laris decided to use two different engi-nes for diesel and biodiesel power, and a third engine for natural gas and biogas fuels.

Daf/Paccard and Cummins for the supply of Euro VI engines for its diesel, bio-diesel and CNG bus ranges. The Urbino Electric with charging pantograph will also be exhibited

For the larger size low-floor and low-entry Urbinos (12 and 18.75 metres), and for the two InterUrbino versions, there is the new MX-11 by Daf. It’s a 10.8-litre six cylinders engine with common rail injection at high pressure (2500 bar) and turbocharged at varia-ble geometry that to reduce exhaust emissions it combines EGR, SCR and a closed particu-late filter. Three power levels: 210, 240 and 271 kW.A similar antipollution system is found on the 6.7-litre ISB6.7E6 by Cummins, also with common rail injection (1,800 bar) and varia-ble geometry turbocharge, mounted on the 8 and 12 metres Urbino and the 18-metre hybrid

bus delivering 187 kW and 209 kW. For the InterUrbino there is also the 231 kW version. Finally, another Cummins with the 8.9-litre ISLG8.9E6 with EGR and an output of 238 kW for the CNG Urbino. It should be noted that the compliance to Euro VI emission standards did not bring major changes in the structure of Solaris vehicles. In general the changes were limited to inter-ventions on the engine compartment and that did not affect the passengers capacity. In Kortrijk, Solaris will also present the Urbi-no Electric with Electric drive axle (ZF AVE 130) and conductive fast charging via roof-mounted pantograph. • More articles about Solaris: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/428/articoli-costruttore-europa

Daimler Buses at Busworld Kortrijk

Not only EURO VI

The complete transition to Euro VI engines for all Mercedes and Setra buses and coaches takes place with the world

premiere of six new models

THE attendance of Daimler Buses at Busworld in Kortrijk the next

18-23 of October will be marked by premieres. Both the Mercedes and Setra ranges models will parade featuring the new Euro VI engines with BlueTec technology combining a closed particu-late filter with an SCR system including AdBlue injection, an oxidising catalytic converter and the partial cooled exhaust-gas recirculation.Hand in hand with the introduction of the new engines, whose launch took place last year ahe-ad of all competitors, improvements were made to optimise the ancillary units to reduce fuel

consumption, and to develop the skeleton and the components of vehicles in order to reduce weight. A new rear end configuration was deve-loped for all models, first by placing an asym-metric ventilation grille on the engine compart-ment door (see the Mercedes Citaro and the Setra ComfortClass 500), than pairing it with a second grille (closed) for aesthetic symmetry.Another change common to all high-floor mo-dels is the use of the new RO 440 drive axle. It is lighter and operates more quietly than the previous HO6 (optimised gears profile), and it is also more economical thanks to lower chur-

ning losses in the axle oil. Finally, the most powerful touring coaches now make use of Voith secondary water retarder. Powerful and lightweight. But what will Daimler Buses bring to Kortrijk? All sort of things, including the world premiere of six new models.Starting with Mercedes, there is Citaro LE with the same contoured wheel arches and front sec-

tion design of the new low-floor buses of 12 and 18 metres, as well as the raised driving station and the new dashboard. The Euro VI compliant engine is the vertically installed 7.7-litre OM 936, available in the two variants of 299 hp and 354 hp. The other novelty in the low-entry ran-ge, that is the 13.9-metre Citaro LE MÜ with a third door on the rear overhang, will not be showcased in Kortrijk.Among the multipurpose buses, the new entry in the Tourismo range is the K model with a length of 10.32-metre (3.37 in height), suita-ble for both touring services and inter-city transport (with standing passengers capacity). It adopts the same modular system of the Tou-rismo RHD (the cockpit is the same) with the interior floor height at 1,060 mm above the road thus providing a luggage compartment capacity of 4.2 cubic metres. In the three-star configuration it can accommodate up to 41 Travel Star Eco seats and it is available with extensive customisation options, from simple to the luxurious. In will be exhibited

in Kortrijk in the VIP version with 32 seats. The Euro VI engine is the OM 936 with 354 horsepower combined with to automated GO 250-8 transmission. The Tourismo RHD and RH models transition to Euro VI with the 10.7-litre OM 470 engine available in three output classes. The same engine, in the higher power class (428 hp), was also chosen for the transition to Euro VI of the two-axle Travego 15 RHD thus

finalising the range compliance to the new an-ti-pollution standards that started last year with the three-axle Edition 1. It will be possible to see it in the 44 seats configuration, with lots of equipment and a comprehensive safety features package.Regarding the inter-city bus series, there are also some novelties for the Intouro. With the transition to Euro VI emission standards, the previous Intouro M model is shortened from

13 to 12.64 metres and fits 59 seats (on show in Kortrijk), alongside the 13.32 metres long Intouro L with 63 seats. The engine compartme-nt was restructured and now houses the OM 936 engine of 299 and 354 horsepower. Finally, representing the new Mercedes minibus range, there will be the Sprinter Travel 65, a tou-ring coach measuring 7.7 metres, with a new look in particular at the front (radiator grille, headli-ghts and bumper). The engine is the three-litre

six-cylinder OM 642 with 190 horsepower, the same found on the previous Sprinter model, but adapted to Euro VI emission standards without changes in power levels or torque, as is the case for the 2.2-litre OM 651.Moving on to the Setra brand, Busworld Kor-trijk will be the occasion for the launch of the new TopClass 500 series with the luxurious three-axle S 515 HDH (12.5 metres, exhibited in the outside area), the S 516 HDH (13.3 metres) and the S 517 (14.2 metres). The distinguishing trait compared to the pre-vious 400 series is ‘La Linea’, the continuous side line hugging the streamlined vehicle body in a two-piece, three-dimensional form, leading to the arrow-shaped rear lights. The front has also been redesigned, featuring a white lettering Setra logo on the black header background and

chrome decorative elements. Not to be missed, the brightness of the interiors of the 516 HDH, now featuring the TopSky Pa-norama glass roof (for the whole series), with by 50 percent more surface area compared to the TopClass 400, LED ambience lighting, heat blower under the 50 Setra Voyager Plus seats and leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel. Under the rear hood (shield-shaped) of entire TopClass 500 series there is the OM 471 engine, Euro VI compliant, with 476 and 510 horsepower. In addition to ComfortClass 500, in the Setra area it will be possible to see also some 400 series models, adapted to Euro VI standards: the double-decker S 431 DT and the Multi-Class S 412 UL and S 415 UL, available in the outdoor area for test driving. •

A LONGER Hybrid Bus

VOLVO Buses continues to bet on hybrid technology.

At Busworld Kortijk, in fact, it will pre-sent the 7900 Articulated Hybrid, the new articulated version of the successful hybrid bus produced by the Swedish manufacturer since 2010 and that sold almost 1,200 units in 21 countries (of which 800 are curren-tly deployed for regular service around the world).

The articulated variant of the Volvo hybrid is built on three axles and has an overall length of 18,134 mm. The floor has been lowered to 340 mm from the ground and the layout features four double door entrances. The vehicle fits a maximum of 154 passen-gers (41 seated) plus wheelchair, that is a rather large capacity for this type of vehi-cles, that was made possible by the posi-tioning of the battery pack near the central axle. This solution allows for an even distri-bution of the bus weight and an increase in the number of seats. The parallel-hybrid drive system includes the Volvo I-Shift automated gearbox and the I-SAM permanent magnet electric mo-tor delivering a maximum output of 150 kW (continuous output is 120 kW). The heat engine is the new 5-litre Volvo D5K240, Euro VI compliant thanks to the exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) with an output of 240 hp (177 kW) and Volvo AT2412D I-Shift automated 12-speed gearbox. The lithium-ion battery pack has a voltage of 600 V and total energy of 4.8 kWh.The electric drive and the diesel engine can be used jointly or independently. During stops the vehicle can operate in all-electric mode without producing any harmful emis-

sions for the environment. Energy generated during braking is stored in the battery and used later to produce electricity for the elec-tric drive. According to the manufacturer, this technology reduces fuel consumption and emissions by up to 30 percent compared to an equivalent model with diesel engine. The braking system consists of the electro-nically controlled EBS and electronically controlled full air suspensions Ecs2. The stabiliser bar is on both axles and it also includes kneeling. The bus is also equipped with a new concept

efficient heating and ventilation system.Showcasing at Busworld for Volvo there will also be the turing coaches of the 9700 and 9900 range, with a new design in the front and rear. These models have a lower weight thanks to the new generation of pas-senger seats. Volvo will also present its own business solutions, specifically developed for fleet managers, aimed at improving dri-ving time and fuel efficiency. The offering includes services such as battery and main-tenance contracts, telematic services and an extensive fleet management portfolio. • More articles about Volvo Buses: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/535/articoli-costruttore-europa
