ELECTRIC AND GAS BUSES AT THE AIRPORT B russels Airport Company has issued an invitation to tender

for the purchase of 30 electric buses. In addition, they will replace 40 service vehicles over the next two years with natural gas buses. Brussels Airport Company is investing in these new technologies in order to reduce the particles, the CO2 and odour nuisance at the airport significantly. The electric buses will enter into service at Brussels Airporty by the beginning of 2018 with a foreseen annual reduction of 600 tonnes of CO2. The buses will also be used for events or guided visits, and will also take staff and passengers from the terminal to the car parks at Brucargo or vice-versa. For the last-mentioned route, there will be a driverless electric shuttle. The electric bus will be used until the shuttle goes into service. The first 40 natural gas vehicles should be driving around Brus-sels Airport within two years, and in the following years the service vehicles will be replaced according to need. •

IRIZAR ELECTRIC i2e FOR BAIXBUS

UK coach hire company Minsterley Motors added five Optare buses to their fleet. The

vehicles are the 11.5m, Euro 5, Metrocity buses. Fe-atured with up to 44 seats, the five buses joined the two Optare Solos already in service with Minsterley

Motors. John Jones, Managing Director, Minsterley Motors said, “We already operate a number of Optare Solos and our experience of these vehicles has been excellent. We have also been extremely pleased by the dedication and high level of the product support supplied by Optare. The outstanding in service fuel economy performance of the Metrocity made it an easy choice for us.” •

OPTARE WINS AT HOME

AN Irizar i2e electric bus will be employed for the Nitbus, the night regular bus service in

Barcelona and 12 other metropolitan municipalities. The vehicle was acquired by the Spanish group Baixbus. Its

acquisition is part of the commitment to clean mobility that AMB (Metropolitan Area of Barcelona) is developing with “Horizon 2020”, the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over seven years (2014 to 2020). So far, AMB tested different models of electric bus, but the Irizar i2e is the first vehicle purchased by the Baixbus group and definitively incorporated into the fleet. •

Awarded by the experts with various awards, inclu-ding the ‘2015 International Van of the Year’, the

new Iveco Daily has also been rewarded by the market. Last year, total sales increased by 20% compared to 2014. In further increase the spread among owner-ope-rators. In Europe, growth was greater than that of the market with an increase of 0.6% compared to 2014. In Latin America, despite difficult economic conditions,

the Daily obtained even better results with an appreciation of 1.5% of the market share. The New Daily was introduced in Europe in 2014 and during 2015 in Africa, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Russia, China, Latin America. In Chile the New Daily won the title of “2016 Best Commercial Vehicles”. Production is concentrated in the Iveco’s factories of Suzzara (Italy) and Valladolid (Spain). These plants have been working at a full capacity throughout the year starting 2016 with a higher number of orders. The Daily is still an ‘evergreen’ of the market. Introduced in 1978, it has more than 2.7 million vehicles sold in over 110 countries worldwide. •

SCANIA HYBRIDS FOR MADRID

S cania announced the order for 46 units of its hybrid model Citywide to various companies

connected to the CRTM, the Regional Transport Consortium of Madrid. The vehicles, all in Class II, will be delivered in the second half of 2016. The Scania Citywide Hybrid is a 100% Scania vehicle with parallel hybrid technology and battery combi-ned to the 9-litre Scania diesel engine (320 hp) with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). This is a solution that reduces both the fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The body is aluminum and it is versatile as to adapt to the specific customer requests. •

THE IVECO DAILY SUCCESS

V an Hool signed a contract with RET, the public transport company of the metropolitan region of

Rotterdam (Netherlands) for two hydrogen buses. A similar order for London was recently announced by Van Hool. This new contract also fits within 3Emotion, a European consortium for hydrogen buses where Van Hool is project coordinator. The two buses for RET will be delivered in the summer 2017. Van Hool CEO Filip Van Hool said: “After London and Antwerp, yet another major European city - in this case Rotterdam - is now confirming its confidence in the most environmentally-friendly technology in public transport. These vehicles, with their high added value, are of crucial importance for the production facility in Koningshooikt.” •

NEW BUS REGISTRATIONS IN EUROPE (ACEA source)

*) ANFIA estimate, based on data of the Italian Ministry of Transport.

The European bus segment is growing rapidly showing a double-digit increase (+ 17.8%) of registrations in 2015. Spain, the UK and France lead the ranking

2015 is a celebratory year for the European bus industry. Accor-

ding to data provided by ACEA, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, it is undoubtedly the best year of at least the last ten years. The figures provided show almost 40,000 buses over 3.5 tons (39,783 to be precise) re-gistered last year in the European Union. In 2014 there were 33,561 units. One can see a double-digit increase (+ 17.8%) that has not really be seen for quite some time and that raises a sector severely affected by the eco-nomic situation of recent years.More than half of the vehicles registered in 2015 are still covered by the markets of the UK, France, and Germany, countries that last year collectively put into operation almost 22,000 new buses.Spain remains among the reference countries of Western Europe, showing the best perfor-mance in terms of growth where the regi-strations take a leap of 38 percentage points (from 1,896 to 2,617 buses). The United Kingdom with an increase of 27.2% (from 6,669 to 8,483 units) and Fran-ce with its 24.6% (from 5,896 to 7,345units) are to be followed. Take into account that in contrast to Spain where the trend had already

turned positive in the past year (+ 15%), the UK and France are both go negative in 2014 (-4.1% in the UK and -15.3 in France).Germany is also reversing its direction from -3% in 2014 to an increase of 8.6% in regi-strations with a total of 6,137 vehicles. The same goes for Italy, which, after a decli-ne by 16.7% in 2014 is gaining ground and closing 2015 with 2,419 units registered (+ 13.3%).Greece didn’t manage to repeat the result of 2014 and climb out of the black hole it plun-ged into over these years. Thus, it ends up with a decrease of 26%.Opposite figures have been seen in Northern Europe with the Netherlands (-48.6%), Fin-land (-23.9%) and Belgium (-19.2) going down compared to the recovery of Denmark (+ 13.7%), Ireland (+ 51.9%) and Luxem-bourg (+ 57.9%).Eastern Europe shows positive results with the renewal of the bus fleet in full swing. This area showed the best performance of 2015 with Romania growing by as much as 101% with 2,309 new buses on the road.In the EFTA area (European Free Trade As-sociation), only Switzerland turned out to be positive (+ 14.8%), while Norway and Ice-land lost respectively 4.4 and 5.9%. •

A number of buses registered in Italy in 2015 has shown a recovery of 13%. Positive but insufficient figures taking into account the urgency of fleet renewal

THE Italian market for vehicles over 3.5 tons registered in 2015 has

shown a growth of 13% compared to 2014. Well, finally, there is a positive signal. But we are still far from being able to rejoice, be-cause it is indeed a paltry increase taking into account the real needs of fleet renewal that has surpassed 13 years of average age.2,426 buses registered last year (including mi-nibuses) are still miles away from the volu-

mes that characterized Italy until 2007 before the global crisis triggered by distortion of the American banking system. 6,000 buses used to be sold in Italy until 2008. In 2010 this figure dropped to 4,400 units, then, to 2,400 units in 2013, and came down to the mini-mum amount of 2,146 units in 2014.To cut it short, despite the positive results of 2015, over the last eight years the Italian market has lost 60% of its value. In addition

to the local budgets of manufacturers, the one paying the price is the national system of regulation of pas-senger transport, still less qualified for the buses in regular ser-vice and with envi-ronmental impact that doesn’t decrease. The warnings on every occasion signalizing the reached pollution level in Italian cities fell flat. The invest-ments in the public transport system keep being the last thought

of those at the top of Ita-lian institutions. When things went ‘well’ the requests unanimously sent by the sector associa-tions amounted to 4,000 buses (only for vehicles over 8 tons) being an an-nual requirement to align the age of vehicles on the road to the European le-vel. If we did the same calculations today, 6,000 units per year probably would not be enough.Let us remind you that a study of ANFIA (National Auto Industry Associa-tion) in March 2015, em-phasized that non but replacement of the Euro 0 buses comprising 8,500 vehicles by 2018 (I and II classes) would have required to change 2,840 buses in 2015 (actually it was limited to slightly above 1,000 units) and keep changing 1,886 units each of the next three years until 2018, in order to be prepared for the traffic ban of all Euro 0 buses starting from January 1, 2019, as decreed by Stability Law 2015.As for manufacturers, two-thirds of the Italian

market is held by Iveco Bus (34.5%) and Evo-Bus (30% branded Mercedes and Setra), which count a complete range of models, from mini-buses to extra-long vehicles. They are followed, some way behind, by MAN Truck & Bus (7.6%) with MAN and Neoplan long-size models, as well as by Scania (5.8%), supported by sales of the Irizar bodied buses, Solaris (5%) and the newly formed Italian Industry Bus (5%) which owns the former models of Bredamenarini and

King Long (almost entirely sold off). All the rest shall settle for the market shares of less than 2%, although these are such important names as Volvo, Van Hool and VDL Bus & Coach.Moving on to the various segments of the market, according to the European classifi-cation, the Class B minibus recovery is to be stressed (up to 22 seats without standing places) growing by 38% up to approximately 300 units,

while the numbers of Class A remain insignifi-cant (up to 22 seats with standing places) for urban services. The school bus segment faces hard times as well with a renewal of only 261 vehicles in 2015 (around 6% of the fleet), recording a decrease of 21.1% compared to already low performance of 2014. Mercedes, mainly with the Sprinter range and Iveco with its Daily hold leading market

positions among minibuses. As for Class I vehicles, namely for the buses used for urban services, the volumes remain substantially the same as in 2014 with a fleet renewal of around 3.7%, insignificant compa-red to the needs. In this case, the two leading brands Mercedes (24.3%) and Iveco (29.5%) need to deal with more competitors such as So-laris (13.1%), MAN (10.5%) and exBreda, now

IIA (14.1%).Sales of intercity Class II grew by 19.8%, but the fleet renewal accounts for only 1.5%. Half of the market is in favor of Iveco. Finally there is tourist Class III that takes a leap forward (plus 34.9%) represented by Evobus (Mercedes and Setra) with nearly 35%, while Iveco stops at 10.6%. All the others follow some way behind. •

T he year 2015 has become clearly positive for the Iveco brand. Pierre Lahutte, the

Iveco brand president, has confirmed it in the final report of 2015 presented on February 4.The truck division grows in all its forms: star-ting from light duty vehicles (+ 22.4%), to medium duty (+ 10.3%) and heavy trucks (+ 24.2%).The bus sector is also growing. In 2015 the num-ber of buses branded Iveco sold in Europe amounted to 6,600 units with an increase of 20.7% compared to 2014 and the Iveco market share reached 16%.These results are notewor-thy, especially considering the fact that the increase of sales exceeds that of the Eu-ropean market. The city buses have shown the best performance: 1,915 vehicles, 45% more compa-red to 2014. In this segment Iveco manages to hold 15.3% of the European market (+ 3.4%).The minibus sales also increased (1,664 units, + 39%) with a share of 11.9%. And those of

touring coaches amounted to 404 units (+ 23.9%) with a share of 5.3%. Decreasing ten-dency, instead, was observed for the intercity buses in the framework of units sold (2,617) with the share of 36.8%. But the decline is

still low (-0.2% in number and -1% of market share). With regard to traction sy-stems, Iveco focuses on gas and hybrid vehicles, which are also considered to be economically sustainable so-lutions. “The biogas and die-sel/electric hybrid systems», emphasized Pierre Lahutte, “are two ways now to redu-ce emissions. It is more re-alistic than that of carrying tons of batteries on the bus roof around the city. The best method to make public buses circulate with the continuous electricity is still the pole. “Up to the present moment 5,500 gas buses have been

supplied to the customers in Europe by Iveco while the Iveco operating hybrids amount to 550 units. In 2015, 50% of low floor buses were gas-powered or hybrid versions. • More articles about Iveco: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/486/articoli-costruttore-europa

2015 ends with a bang for Solaris Bus & Coach. The manufacturer

from Bolechowo closes the season with the hi-ghest turnover of its twenty-year history of 1.7 million zloty that equals to 403 million euro.Total sales for 2015 amounted to 1,279 buses and trolleybuses as well as 17 trams. Therefore it is the third-best vehicle sales in the past twenty years. Over 14,000 units have been produced at the plant in Bolechowo during this time. The number of exported buses reached 74% (946 vehicles), which consti-tutes 74% of the total number of vehicles sold last year. With the deli-very of 158 buses and trolleybuses last year, the Czech Republic has grown to the largest sales market for Solaris among the reference countries. Germany, Italy, Latvia and Romania had a large share of last year’s sales. As for the domestic market (333 vehicles sold), Solaris keeps the leadership in the segment of low floor city buses with a 47.5% share for the 13th consecutive year.

The biggest challenge of 2015 was entering the new generation of the Urbino family into series production. The first units were delive-red in June. Almost 300 units of the new Ur-bino in 12- and 18-metre versions have been supplied to nine European countries.Solaris also confirms its leading brand posi-

tion in the design and construction of electric buses. In 2015 alone, Solaris handed 25 buses to Spain, Germany and Poland. The vehicles were supplied with dif-ferent battery types and charging systems."In 2016 we plan to in-troduce more new pro-ducts of the new gene-ration. This will include the new Trollino and the

new Urbino powered by CNG,” said Andreas Strecker, the CEO of Solaris. “ Besides that, we want to offer our customers new solutions in the field of hybrid buses. It will certainly be a year of a dynamic growth in battery buses sales in Europe. We will do our best to play a key role in this segment. We also work on intensifying our sales activities outside the continent.” •

CERTIFIED TIRES

FOR THE WINTER TEST

T he GT Radial GAU861 is a tire for all positions developed for city

buses by Giti Tire. Recently the tire achieved the “three-peak mountain snoflakes” certification (3PMSF: three mountain peaks with snow flake). The tire is available in size 275/70 R22.5 for steering axles and drive axles con-figurations typical for city buses. The M + S label guarantees the excellent performance of traction and braking on snow and in general in winter con-ditions. Among the plus of GAU861, the protectors of the extra-reinforced side for maximum strength under braking and shock and the tread depth of 20.2 mm for a good mileage and reduced noise for greater passenger comfort. “With the GT Radial brand we are developing a broad portfolio of products for the mi-d-market and services for fleets, which meets all the needs of passenger transport and meets the growing market demand,” says Daria Sala from CUNA, TBR Sales & Marketing Europe Director of Giti Tire. The GT Radial portfolio for the Urban division also includes the GSR225 R Combi Road, available in sizes 19.5” and 22.5” with M + S mark •

Ivalo, Finland, approxima-tely 300 kilometres north

of the Arctic Circle in the middle of the wilderness. Here, Hankook Tire will establish its own European wintertyre testing facility. The global manufacturer of tyres has recently signed a contract to build the facility with Test World Oy, a Finnish independent vehicle and tyre testing company (subsidiary of Millbrook Group Ltd). The testing centre will have state-of-the-art workshop facilities, as well as offices, meeting and social rooms. Preparations for the construction and design work had started immediately after the signing of the agreement. Hanko-ok expects the entire site to be operational from December 2016. •

V aleo has signed an agreement

with Deutsche Betei-ligungs AG (DBAG), a listed private equity company, to acquire Spheros, the worl-dwide leader in air

conditioning systems for buses. With annual revenue of around €250 million, Spheros leverages its technological leadership to supply air conditioning systems to all the main bus manu-facturers and major fleet operators. It has a worldwide sales network and a vast industrial footprint, with plants in Germany, Finland, Turkey, the United States, Brazil, China and India. The acquisition will allow Valeo to extend its thermal management activities to the vibrant bus market, which is expected to grow by more than 5% annually over the coming years, driven by the expansion of public transportation throughout the world at a time of accelerating urbanization. By joining one of the world’s leading thermal systems suppliers for the automotive industry, Spheros, whose margins are higher than Valeo’s, will become more competitive in parts procurement and systems design. This external growth project, which is expected to be accretive from the first year, is part of the strategy presented to the Group’s shareholders in March 2015 aiming to introduce new growth drivers particularly in CO2 emissions reduction systems. •

snate in the province of Varese and then in Dortmund, Germany), Evobus Italy has kept offering in these twenty years a complete ran-ge of articulated models that has enabled the company to increase the pertinent share even on the Italian market with its trends strongly affected by recession. The testimonies of those who have traveled the same road with Mercedes and Setra may be found in the Evobus Italy Blog (www.la-cittadellautobus.it). •

E vobus Italy is celebrating its twentieth birthday. Therefore it is necessary to go

back to January 1, 1996 to find the origins of the company that represents now the Mer-cedes and Setra brands. It all started in February a year before with ac-quisition of the prestigious (still) Kässbohrer brand by Mercedes and establishment of Evo-Bus GmbH, based in Stuttgart, which now is proving to be a giant destined to stand out in the panorama of the European manufacturers, as confirmed by the first commercial results: 5,000 complete buses and 1,200 chassis sold in 2015. There are four branches (Mannheim and Ulm in Germany, Davutpasa-Istanbul in Turkey and Ligny in France) and seven subsi-diaries in Europe. Among them there is Evo-bus Italy based in Sorbara (Modena), the one that was the sales office of Kässbohrer brand before changing to K Setra.Commercial results of Evobus Italy were suddenly remarkable right away with a sha-re of 25% in the regular service and touring coach segment. It’s worth to remind that for Evobus the Italian city bus market was still precluded, given into force the Federtrasporti specifications which effectively excluded the possibility for foreign competitors entering the Italian market. It is necessary to remember that 1996 was the first year of reversal for the Italian bus market, after four years of crisis that deci-

A year later it found its way with a modified version created specifically for Italy.

2015), from minivans to heavy trucks.Since 2010 the company has entered the bus industry and started manufacturing the urban models under the license of Bredamenarini-bus brand. In 2013 Karsan launched its own brand “Jest” mini-bus followed by Atak and Star in 2013.At Busworld Eu-rope last year Kar-san has expanded its commitment to alternative propul-sion presenting a prototype electric minibus, the Jest Electric, whose range production is expected in 2017.It’s a 5.8-me-tre bus with middle lowered floor and an outswinging two-leaf door, wheelchair area and manual ramp fitted as standard. It is suita-ble for services in urban areas and combines high maneuverability with an absence of air-polluting emissions. It can carry up to 10 passenger seats with a

2 + 1 arrangement, seven of them are instal-led in the rear raised part on two levels and there are two folding seats in addition in the wheelchair area. For electric traction there is an engine with a maximum power of 125 kW to be relied on and a torque of 250 Nm. It’s powered by a

pack of lithium-ion batteries (located in the rear part) with electric capacity of 66 kWh. All this features allow for a maximum speed of 80 km/h, a range of 120 km and the possi-bility of facing slopes up to 25%.For creating the necessary comfort there is a 12 kW air-conditioning system, a 15 kW

heating system and availability of all kinds of options. For the driver’s cockpit there is a touch display. These are the common features with those of a diesel version that since its first release on the market in 2013 has already been sold in amount of approximately 5,000 units in Turkey, as well as in many European coun-tries, Georgia and the Dominican Republic.

The Jest model is offered with different internal configura-tions, up to a maximum of 17 seats (class B) plus 4 standing places (Class A). The engi-ne (front) is a three-litre FPT branded Euro VI with a power of 125 kW (170 hp), combined with a manual or robotized six-speed transmission.Atak and Star, the other two vehicles of Karsan range, are the result of modular construc-tion that pools the front design, external dimensions (length of 8.15 metres and width of 2.4 metres), disc brakes, front wheel independent suspension and a 4.5-litre FPT rear engi-ne delivering a power of 137 kW (186 horsepower). The rest changes.

Atak is a city bus with low floor construction all the way to the second door (Class I) with an internal useful height of 2,370 mm and a transport capacity of 23 seats and 35 standi-ng places, expanding up to 27 seats in case of using the area equipped for the disabled people with manual wheelchair ramp at the second door and the possibility of 4 folding seats. The central door, close to the second

axle, is a two-leaf door and the front one is a one-leaf door.Star is instead foreseen for a multi-purpose use, suitable for intercity services (class II) or tourism (Class III). It has a raised floor

accessible via two steps at the front door and via three steps in the middle. It has a free standing height of 1,950 mm, inner baggage racks and an underfloor luggage compartment with a capacity of 4.25 cubic metres. It can carry up to 31 passengers and is fitted with an 18 kW air conditioning and a 12 kW heating, audio/video system with folding LCD screen, Wi-Fi and all the facilities that are likely to be foreseen in the long option list. As well as for the safety systems, starting from the ESP as standard. •

All the optio-nal extras can be added to the rear handles, footrests and two/three point comfort belts fitted as standard. The LED lights are employed for illuminating the floor located approximately 1.7 metres of the ground and raised three steps higher compared to the driver’s cockpit. The closed luggage racks with doors (optional) are elegant, with an external handrail that incor-porates two-intensity LED white lighting. On top of the luggage rack there is a slit for air condi-

tioning distribution that is deli-vered through the closable vents in the service set of the personal equipment (spaced out with the speakers), which also includes LED lights with touch-screen power buttons.Heating is provided by floor con-vectors powered by the Spheros Thermo 300 housed behind the compartment door in the rear

Scania engine delivering 490 horsepower (360 kW) mated to the Scania Opticruise 12-speed automated transmission. The reduction ratio on the bridge of 1: 3.15 is also identical and the performance on the road could not offer big surprises. The Irizar i8 covered 342 kilometres from Milan to Genoa and back, consuming an average of 1 litre of diesel per 4.18 km (including the equiva-lent AdBlue amount) and traveling with the average speed of 80.9 km/hour. The i6 had performed slightly better, but it is about decimal values: 4.2 km/litre and 82 km/h.Therefore the test confirms the low consum-ption of the Scania engine, which places our i8 before the Mercedes Tourismo L, thanks to a performance index of 8.45 (refer to the table at the end of the article). These figures are still far from the index of 9.07 received by the Setra S 516 HDH, though tested with a ballast of 2.3 tons less.

The i8 as well as the 14-metre i6 features the 13-litre Sca-

nia Euro VI engine in its more powerful version, namely, the DC13 125 delivers 490 horse-power (360 kW) and 2,550 Nm of torque. It is characterized by direct injection with four valves per cylinder, common-rail with XPI of 2,400 bars and Scania VGT variable geometry turbine. The reduction of polluting emis-sions is achieved through a com-bination of exhaust gas recircu-lation (EGR), diesel particulate filter (DPF) and catalyst (SCR) with AdBlue injection. The gear-box is the automated 12-speed Scania Opticruise with select-able driving modes economy, standard and power to maximise engine performance. The braking system (EBS) and the air suspension (ELC), both electronically controlled, di-stribute weight on three Scania

axles: AMI 700 front indepen-dent wheel, rear ADA 130D and steering ARA860. For the dri-ving safety one can rely on ESP, ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) and LDWS (Lane assistant). The technical parts are easily ac-

cessible through the side hatches. Perhaps it would be better to ar-range the batteries in the free compartment above the AdBlue tank (in the rear part rightwards) leaving free space above the left wheel arch. •

The 14.07m i8 shows an excellent road beha-vior which increases its stability by lengthe-ning the wheelbase of about 40 centimetres (rear overhang is reduced to the same extent) compared to the 14.37 m i6.As we have already written in BusToCoach Magazine last month, a number of touring Irizar i8, introduced to the market by the end of the last year, represents the top of the Spa-nish manufacturer’s range and will gradu-ally take the place of the PB series. Fulfilling its role, the tested (test-dri-ven) 14.07m i8 was then presented with rich optional fitting: equipped saddlery with leather uphol-stery, closed baggage racks, tinted windows, metallic paint and in-creased diesel tank. It is a ‘luxury’ coach for a real price of 400 thousand EUR, about 25 thousand euro more is required for the standard equipment that still does not omit the toilet, the coffee machine, the alloy wheels, the LED daytime running lights, the parking sensors, the rear camera and the electrically foldable rear-view mirrors. In short, the i8 is an excellent model even without overdoing it. •
