SOLARIS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

ON March 22, 1996, the first Solaris low-floor city bus left the factory in Bolechowo near Poznań. In 1999

the Polish producer celebrated the premiere of the Solaris Urbino. Designed and manufactured in Bolechowo, the new bus quickly became a top seller in Poland and at the end of 2005 over 1,000 Solaris buses were running in 17 European countries. The company entered the new millennium under a new brand: Solaris Bus & Coach. The Urbino’s portfolio was then expanded with models of various lengths, but also with even more innovative items like the low-floor and emission-free trolleybus Trollino and a new one fuelled with CNG. In 2006 Solaris showed its first Urbino Hybrid bus and three years later Solaris presented its first tram, the Tramino. In 2011 the first Polish, completely electric bus left the plant in Bolechowo. In 2014, exactly one decade after the premiere of the Urbino predecessor, the company revealed a completely new construction. In twenty years the factories located near Poznań have manufactured over 14,000 buses and trams which are running in nearly 600 cities.

VDL FUTURA FOR LONG DISTANCE

P roduced in Lithuania, Dancer bus is a very spe-cial vehicle. It travels with the electrical energy

from wind power and it has a design that has never seen before. It was originally an old Škoda TR14 trolleybus. Then “Vejo Projects”, a company with Lithuanian and German capital specializing in the development of transport systems powered by re-

newable energy for the international markets, turned it into Dancer bus. The original engine has been replaced by four electric motors in the wheels which produce energy thanks to the constantly active wind turbines. The weight of the bus was then cut by 57% thanks to the replacement of the old roof and side sheets with vertical transparent panels made from recycled materials. •

IN LITHUANIA WITH WIND ENERGY

A fter the supply of 10 Futuras at the end of 2015 to Fren-ch passenger transport companies that provide service

on the Starshipper long distance lines, VDL Bus & Coach is delivering an additional 11 Futuras to the same companies during the the first four months of 2016. All the coaches are the Futura FHD2-129/440 model in a length of 12.9 m. with a capacity of 48+1+1 seats. The luxury equipment includes very comfortable seats, Wi-Fi, 220 volt socket at

all seats, a defibrillator and/or a wheelchair lift. Starshipper is one of the five players involved in the opening-up of the market for long-distance coaches. The brand is operated by independent SMEs active in passenger transport in France. •

TEST IN PARIS FOR ELECTRICAL BYD

BusToCoach on-line Magazine - April 2016 FLASH NEWS

Six CNG buses have joined the fleet of Arganda del Rey, the company that manages the public transportation servi-

ce on behalf of the Regional Transport Consortium of Madrid (CRTM). The vehicles are bodied by Iberian Castrosua ma-nufacturer on Scania technology: one city bus in a length of 10.8 meters on Scania K280 UB 4x2 CNG chassis and five

13-metres intercity buses on Scania K 320 IB 4x2 CNG chassis. The vehicles are fitted with seat for the disabled, ramp both automatic and manual and fire alarm systems. The Commu-nity of Madrid owns 145 buses powered by natural gas, in addition to several tens of hybrid vehicles. •

FIRST SOLAR BUS IN UGANDA

T he Kayoola bus built by Kiira Motors Corporation is the first solar bus entered into service in Africa. With a full

of electricity it travels for 80 kilometers with a maximum of 35 people on board. It debuted on February 16, 2016, in Kampala, Uganda’s capital. The vehicle is fitted with an electric motor powered by two batteries. One of these bat-teries is recharged by 12 solar panels installed on the roof, while the other can be recharged while the bus is stopped. The charging time stated by the company is about an hour for each battery. •

GAS-POWERED SCANIA FOR MADRID

The pure electric bus produced by BYD has made its Euro-pean debut in Paris. The vehicle is currently under homo-

logation testing before its introduction in Europe. Paris was chosen for this preview appearance thanks to a drive test by the city’s mayor to reduce pollution from such vehicles. BYD electric bus is powered by a 180kw (241bhp) engine. The Chi-nese manufacturer declares a range of 200 km under typical operating conditions and a recharge time of 2.5 hours.Isbrand Ho, Managing Director of BYD Europe, said: “We’ll shortly be announcing our introduction plans for our coach in Europe, with France as our first market. Many of the technologies we have developed about our city bus range – also with experience of millions of kilometres of in service run-ning - are applicable to this new model: the BYD pure electric coach. We are confident we have a vehicle which exactly suits the city’s needs”. •

THEATRE ON THE BUS

The bus operator Coaches Presas S.L. based in La-lin, Galicia, Spain, has joined the initiative The-

atre Bus Arriva. The idea is to use the bus as a space for setting up shows in different locations as well as to enliven the journey of those who use this means of transport. The vehicle is a CS 40 Magnus bodied by Castrosua. It has a capacity of 60 seats fitted with seat belt and the inside is set up like a real theater with the stage built in the public audience. The list of shows that will take place in the framework of this cultural initiative includes titles such as ‘Traveling with Don Quixote’, ‘Once upon a time’, ‘Hamlet’. •

The new Daimler South East Asia Pte Ltd regional center (DSEA) started business in Singapore. The new center over-

sees sales and service activities covering both Mercedes-Benz trucks, buses and vans and FUSO trucks and buses. The regio-nal center in Singapore covers 18 markets: Brunei, Cambodia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vanuatu, Vietnam.

Singapore is an important market for Daimler’s bus and coach business. Illustrating this, at the opening of the regional centre for South East Asia, the 1000th Mercedes-Benz Citaro urban bus has been handed over to the long running customer SBS Transit in Singapore. The island state has the biggest single fleet of Mercedes-Benz Citaro urban buses in operation worldwide. All vehicles come from the EvoBus plant in Mannheim, Germany. Mercedes-Benz buses have been travelling Singapore’s roads for over 15 years now.•

THE MAN INTERCITY WINS IN DESIGN

T he Lion’s Intercity, the new model unveiled last fall at the Kortijk Busworld, won the iF Gold Award 2016

in the “Automobiles / Vehicles / Bikes” category. The ce-remony was held on February 26 in Monaco of Bavaria during the iF Design Award Night. The 58 design experts of the jury motivated the choice as follows “The MAN Lion’s Intercity convinced the jury for the classical forms, the well-drawn lines and the balanced proportions. All the parts are made with the highest accuracy: interiors are harmonized with the body and vice versa, windows and doors are elegantly integrated in the whole and the language of color, materials and surface structu-res are in perfect harmony. These are characteristics that make this bus a modern vehicle that can get under all aspects. •

NEW DAIMLER CENTER IN SEA

Four double-decker buses manufactured by Spani-sh coach builder Unvi have been circulating for

a few months on the streets of Paris on behalf of the transport company L’Open Tour. Employed on four tourist routes of the city, the vehicles are in Open Top version with panoramic windscreen and seats designated for outdoor use. The onboard equipment includes a complete audio system in different languages and Metro-style doors to facilitate the inflow and outgoing passengers.•

T he BusStore Show 2016 attracted over 1,000 visitors from more than 25 countries in Neu-Ulm, Germany,

on February 19-20. Around 170 buses of all popular brands and types were on show and over one-third of these vehicles (from minibuses to double-deckers) chan-ged owner in the course of the international show orga-nised by the used-bus brand of Daimler Buses. During

the two days of the event Omniplus, the service brand of Daimler Buses, informed visitors about its tailor-made service contracts and offerings, such as BestAge Repair for used buses and high-quality genuine spare parts. The employees of Mercedes-Benz Financial Services were on hand to present attractive financing packages for pre-owned buses. BusStore is an independent quality brand for the used-bus activities of Daimler Buses and it has been of-fering since 2014 an extensive pool of vehicles. BusStore’s specialists test and grade every used bus according to specifically defined BusStore criteria. In addition, Gold category vehicles come with a BusStore warranty. The buses are carefully prepared at Omniplus service centres close to BusStore’s European locations. •

Y ear 2015 was difficult for MAN Group. The German giant, which is part of

Volkswagen Group starting from 2011, had declined orders and turnover. The operating profit also decreased. The performance of the emerging countries, mainly Brazil and Rus-sia, had a heavy impact on the data.On the contrary, in Europe Man Truck & Bus consolidated its positions in the markets for commercial vehicles increasing orders and turnover. All in all, the MAN SE revenue in 2015 fell to 13.7 billion euro against 14.28 billion euro in 2014 (-4.1%). The orders stopped at 14.4 billion, 6% less than the year before. The commissioned units decreased by 12%

to 107,546 vehicles in the commercial vehi-cles business area. The operating profit is also reduced from 384 million to 92 million euro. Special items wei-ghing on operating profit related to restructu-ring expenses for the future growth program (185 million). But operating profit before taxes and finance/extraordinary items grew, passing from 152 million to 205 million.Among the Group’s divisions, the worst per-formance was the one of MAN Latin Ame-rica that despite the leading position gained for the 13th consecutive time, saw the colla-pse of the turnover by 53% down to 1.04 bil-lion against 2.25 billion in 2014. It is a result inevitably influenced by the economic situa-

tion in Brazil. The order intake dropped by more than half from 2.3 to 1 billion euro. In terms of quantity, the Brazi-lian market sales almost halved to 24,472 units (-49%). Falling demand also in Russia where the vehicles ordered fell to 84.362 (−12%).On the contrary, the tur-nover of MAN Diesel

& Turbo was positive (+ 0.98%), however, compared to a decline in orders by 13% in the Power Engineering seg-ment, a sector that was affected by the market crisis of engines and marine systems and turbomachinery. The MAN Truck & Bus division performed much better with sales that rose to 8.89 bil-lion compared to 8.14 in 2014 (+ 5.75%), doing good recovery of commercial vehicles in Europe. The orders also rose to 9.6 bil-lion euro (+ 6%). The largest contribution came from Germany, followed by the UK and France.Europe therefore remained the most important area for MAN Group and represented 67% of the global market (59% in 2014), followed by the Americas (11%) and Asia (10%).“We have initiated or stepped up measures to increase profitability in all divisions,” explains Joachim Drees, Chief Executive Officer of MAN SE.” The most important new measure is the future growth program to strengthen the long-term competitiveness of MAN Truck & Bus. It includes reorganizing

truck production and streamlining admini-stration. The changes introduced in the bus production network in 2014 have now lar-gely been implemented. “For 2016, the MAN SE board expects the commercial vehicle sales to remain at the same level as last year, while the revenue will not reach the value of 2015. As for the operating result and performance, the im-proved net overtaking is expected and both indicators also exceed the values before ex-traordinary items of 2015.Competitive pressure will remain high in the critical markets. Operating profit and opera-ting efficiency will therefore remain below the values of 2015.This means slightly lower turnover for MAN Group, but the operating result and the ope-rating performance will go significantly beyond the levels reached in 2015. • More articles about MAN: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/503/articoli-costruttore-europa

Scania archives year 2015 with an in-crease in turnover and operating pro-

fit. On the contrary, the delivered vehicles fell, mainly due to the negative trend in the truck industry while buses were stable. But not in Europe, where there was a double-digit increase. This is what emerges from the 2015 Scania annual report. In the document, in addition to the ac-counts, the Swedish manufacturer describes its business model, commitment to sustai-

nability and its point of view concerning the things necessary to transform the tran-sport system of today into the sustainable transport system of tomorrow.“Not only energy efficiency, alternative fuels and electrification systems but also efficiency of the entire logistics system and intelligent infrastructure combined with an extensive use of information and commu-nication technologies.”Returning to the numbers, the Scania

Group’s sales in 2015 grew by 3% in the vehicles and servi-ces sector for a total amount of 94.89 bil-lion Swedish kronor (around 10.24 billion euro). The curren-cy rates effects have made a positive im-pact of 4% on the fi-gures, says Scania.Compared to the various market seg-ments, the trucks re-corded a slight incre-ase in sales (+ 2.79%) while the progress of

buses was much stronger (+ 21,34%), par-tly as a result of the bus market recovery across European borders. The sales of used vehicles were good (+ 20.5%). The engine turnover was also po-sitive (+ 10.8%) alongside with that of services (+ 9.3%) than with 20.58 billion Swedish crowns reached the highest value achieved by Scania so far in this area.In 2015 the Swedish manufacturer also in-creased the operating profit that amounted to 9.64 billion Swedish kronor against 8.72 billion Swedish kronor of the previous year (+ 10.5%). The operating margin rose from 9.5% to 10.2%. The operating profit net of taxes also increased (+ 12.38%).As for vehicles and services, the operating profit amounted to 8.6 billion Swedish kro-nor against 7.7 of the previous season (+ 11.6%).If revenue and earnings were positive, the same cannot be said for vehicle deliveries that were lower, even though slightly, com-pared to the levels of 2014.For trucks the drop was around 4% to a total of 69,762 units while the share of buses and coaches delivered during 2015 remained vir-tually unchanged at 6,799 units (+ 0.47%).

In Europe Scania was able to recover much ground reaching an ultimate result of 41% in terms of delivered buses and coaches. The segment of engine deliveries rose to 8,485 units (+ 2.39%). But the greatest sa-tisfaction was due to the increase of delive-red vehicles amounting to 12.5%.“2015 was a year of challenges” writes in the preface of the 2015 Scania report, Hen-rik Henriksson, president and CEO of the Swedish Group.“Our industry has seen four years of mo-ving sideways. Demand has dropped dra-matically in some of our most important markets such as Brazil, Russia and the Middle East. Although demand in Europe has rebounded, it is more important than ever to maintain flexibility, keep an eye on costs and leverage on our research and de-velopment, production and sales. ““With this said, 2015 was also an impressi-ve year for Scania,” continues Henriksson. “Despite the market situation, we were still able to maintain a double-digit margin per-formance. We responded to the geographic differences in market development, by swi-ftly rebalancing and refocusing our resour-ces. Our flexible global production system proves the resilience of our organization. “• More articles about SCANIA: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/516/articoli-costruttore-europa

LED LIGHTSFOR CLEAR VIEWThe LED headlamps are now available in Setra ComfortClass 500 and TopClass 500 series as well as in Mercedes Citaro model. For maximum safety even while driving at night

I mproved visibility and less tiring effect on the driver’s eyes. Therefore, enhanced safety. This is the fundamen-

tal value of LED headlamps, now available as an option for touring coaches Setra ComfortClass 500 and TopClass 500, as well as for Mercedes Citaro city bus. This is the latest evolution in terms of exterior bus li-ghting technology that follows the introduction of the xenon headlamps applied to Mercedes Travego (upon re-quest) in 1999 and a bit later to Setra TopClass 400 (fit-ted as standard). Xenon light has then become bi-xenon, which means xenon light for both high and low beam in a single lamp, and LED lighting began to be used for di-rection indicators, daytime driving lamps and, of course, the interior lighting of the Mercedes and Setra buses. Now we move to the LED headlamps. It may seem trivial, but remember that seeing and being seen is vital in road traffic. This is especially true in bad weather conditions and at night. The best possible light and the attendant safety are of outstanding importance to bus drivers, who are responsible for ensuring that dozens of passengers arrive safely at their destination, traveling at night. According to the German Federal Statistical Office, for example, roughly one in five traffic accidents with injury

LED LAMPS ARE NOT AFRAID OF COMPARISON

L ight-emitting diodes (LED) were invented in 1962. They

consist of several layers of se-mi-conductor compounds, such as silicon. The type and compo-sition of these semi-conductors determine the color of light (de-fined in kelvin, K) and the LED brightness (defined in lumens, lm). The envelope of synthetic material surrounding them de-termines the propagation charac-teristics of light, produced when the current flows from the anode to the cathode. While halogen light, with a colour temperature of 3,200 kelvin (K) is perceived as being warm, xenon light, at around 4,000 kelvin, ap-pears neutral white and cool. The light produced by LEDs, with its 5,500 kelvin, appears cooler again and comes very close to daylight (6,500 kelvin). It is perceived as being brighter than xenon and ha-

logen light. The efficiency of LED lamps, measured in brightness percei-ved by the human eye (lm) of the input power unit (W) is compara-ble to that of xenon bulbs. The same applies to the maxi-mum flow rate. Halogen hea-dlamps attain a maximum ran-ge of around 120 metres, while xenon and LED headlamps each have a range in the order of 150 metres.Instead at around 20,000 hours, the service life of LED lamps actually exceeds the customary vehicle life-span.A further advantage of LED li-ght is that the full luminous in-tensity is available directly after switching on the lamps. The xe-non headlamps or conventional incandescent bulbs instead take several seconds to attain full lu-minous intensity. •

to persons occurs in the dark and the percentage of ac-cident severity is even higher. Almost 40 percent of all accidents involving fatalities on motorways in 2014 took place in the dark. Therefore, good light and good visibility can save lives. The use of LEDs for Mercedes and Setra buses were per-formed without changing the headlamp aesthetic feature in different models, standardizing only the technology ac-commodated in the same basic housing. Only the frame around the lamp is different. There is no need for the additional high beam until now employed to date in xenon headlamps - it is replaced by a dark screen. The new lamps are bi-LEDs for low and high beam in a single housing. Five LEDs generate low beam, while three additional lamps produce high beam. Each LED has its own reflector and their shine forwards into a lens, which in its turn, similarly to the technique of Xenon lamps, directs the light onto the road. There are important characteristics of the light beam. The colour temperature of the light from LED headlamps cor-responds roughly to daylight, as a result of which they have a substantially less tiring effect on the driver’s eyes. Moreover, unlike other lamps, the light flux of an LED lamp remains at a virtually constant high level throughout the lamp’s entire service life. Among other things, this service life is many times longer than that of halogen or xenon lamps, at the same time reducing costs and avoidi-ng the “one-eyed” buses with poor visibility. It is necessary to remember that in addition to the hea-dlamps, daytime driving lamps and direction indicators on the Mercedes-Benz and Setra buses, position lamps and side-marker lamps also feature LED technology. Brake li-ghts, rear lights and the lamps of the licence plate lighting are also based on LED technology. The number of LED lamps employed in the exterior li-ghting adds up to a maximum of 140 units as the LED technology ensures durability and reliability. The exterior lighting on the buses also continues to in-clude classic light sources while the frequent use is not expected and the use of LEDs would not make any sense. These are front fog lamps (halogen lamp), rear fog lamps, reversing lights and engine compartment lighting (incan-

descent lamps).LED technology now plays an extremely important role in interior lighting for buses, whether it is the seating area or the driver’s cockpit of the Mercedes Citaro and Setra. For example, around 4,000 LED lamps are in service on a fully equipped Setra S 517 HDH coach.

The economic impact of the LED lamps, in terms of lower costs for the lamps, downtime and labour costs shall not be underestimated.Throughout its service life, a bus runs for around 15,000 hours on low beam. However, the halogen H7 lamps whi-ch are in standard use only achieve a service life of some

400 to 800 hours. This means that the lamps on either side of the vehicle need to be replaced around 19 times throughout the service life of a bus. With Xenon headlamps, the situation has not improved drastically. Despite having duration for around 2,500 to 3,000 hours, xe-non bulbs are several times more expensive than halogen bulbs. In short, the higher initial cost of LED lamps (2,500 euro gross for Setra ComfortClass) pays extensively during the bus service life. And the traveling is safer. •

Concrete solutions, immediately usable and accessible to all, this is the ap-

proach of FCA and CNH Industrial towards sustainable mobility. In particular, a special attention is dedicated to the usage of natu-ral gas in different automotive fields, from passenger cars to commercial vehicles for goods and passenger transport, to agricul-tural machinery. Ultimate target implies the passage to the use of biomethane as fuel for natural gas vehicles, significantly increasing

the environmental benefits. To this end the (bio) methane day (on Mar-ch 10, 2016) made it possible to visit two companies, the Egea in Ozegna, Turin and the ACEA Ecological Pole in Pinerolo, Tu-rin, demonstrating the possibility of produ-cing biomethane using agricultural residues and urban waste, enhancing in this way re-newable resources and contributing to the competitiveness improvement of the related productive sectors.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has been the le-ading European manufacturer for more than 15 years in the field of cars and CNG com-mercial vehicles with a wide range of bi-fuel vehicles of such brands as Fiat, Fiat Profes-sional and Lancia. The FPT Industrial brand, which supplies CNG engines to CNH Industrial Group, has used its own know-how in the transport sec-tor for developing the Methane Power pro-totype engine of the New Holland Agricul-

ture brand. In its turn, CNH Industrial is the European leader offering natural gas technology that has sold more than 14,000 vehicles branded Iveco and Iveco bus and 29,000 engines branded FPT Industrial. Furthermore, all the natural gas range solutions have been already prepared for running on biomethane. On the occasion of Expo 2015, in partner-ship with Air Liquide (world leader in ga-ses), they demonstrated potential environ-

mental benefits generated from the use of biomethane, launching a project aimed at promoting the introduction of biomethane through in-frastructure networks of the natural gas distribution in Europe. In Italy, biomethane is still not accessible as a fuel to the consumers. To this end, 3.64 GWh of biomethane production cer-tificates have been purcha-sed within the UK GreenGas certification system. This amount of biogas equals to approximately 340,000 m3 of natural gas used by Fiat

è è

500L and Iveco buses provided at Expo 2015. 118 tons of CO2 have been spared while using this amount of biogas instead of natural gas. That equals to absorption of a forest composed of 160 plants throughout their lives.Natural gas is the purest fuel available to-day and the only real alternative to petrol and diesel, with CO2 emission reduction by 23 percent compared to gasoline com-bustion performance, and up to 15 percent

less than in oil-powered heavy vehicles, and with minimum harmful emissions: from particulate, practically reduced to zero, to oxides of nitrogen and to the more reactive hydrocarbons that cause the formation of other pollutants. In addition, natural gas has a potential of being a renewable source through biogas, a fuel with a high development potential, which allows wide availability of raw ma-terials for its production.

From the environmental point of view, the real advantage of biomethane is evident when you consider the entire fuel life cycle, with a well-to-wheel perspective, namely, from production to final consumption. In this case, the reduction of CO2 may exceed 95 percent, according to the raw material sour-ce, almost always consisting of domestic, industrial or agricultural waste. In this perspective, the biomethane vehicles are comparable in terms of CO2 emissions to

an electric vehicle powered by energy from renewable sources. However, there are the persistent structural problems in Italy that have hindered the natu-ral gas development for vehicles and present an obstacle to the biomethane use: an insuffi-cient natural gas distribution network in many regions, in addition to red tape for opening the new facilities and the need to complete the regulatory framework concerning the bio-methane production and networking. •

T he Egea Group has realized and is opera-

ting 4 biogas cogeneration plants, with a total instal-led capacity of 3 MW. S ta r t ing f rom 2011 the Ozegna plant in Turin with an installed capacity of 625 kWe has been producing the biogas extracted from cattle and swine manure as well as silage from vegetables (maize, tritica-le, sorghum and

ryegrass). The obtained digestate is used as land fertilizer for feeding the plant while cultivating the plant fractions.Egea is operating in diffe-rent stages of local public

services both in regulated activities and free market regimes. Over the last years a company of EGEA group was listed in the top-ten

of leading national opera-tors within the framework of electricity and gas sale, and is increasing the “re-tail” customers, thanks to a dense branch network open to the public, a significant

part of an integrated service offered to the territory and in the territory. Moreover, it is a national leader per-forming the utilities district

heating tailored to medium-sized centers delive-ring services in 15 towns for the moment.In the field of renewable ener-gy (photovoltaic, h y d r o e l e c t r i c , biogas and bio-methane) Egea produces the te-c h n o l o g i c a l l y

a d v a n c e d s y s t e m s , capable of developing real virtuo-us circles, as they per-fec t ly f i t into the en-v i ronmen t a n d s o -cio-econo-mic context

they arise in. The latest biomethane related project attests that the “province” becomes the fulcrum and point of sustainable eco-nomic development excel-lence of the country. •

Acea Pinerolese Indu-striale S.p.A is a mul-

ti-utility company based in Turin, model of efficiency and public sector innova-tion. It is the first company in Italy that has developed a renewable energy path through the enhancement of urban organic waste. From 2014 the Pinerolo facility also produces bio-methane to power cars and trucks as well as for do-mestic needs (cooking and heating) and manufacturing processes of large compa-nies.Biomethane is obtained through the upgrading process of m e t h a n e con ta ined in the bio-gas “inter-cepted” in a complex p r o c e s s of organic waste anae-robic treat-ment in Turin and numerous cities in the Turin area. At experimental level so far, you can also get hydrogen from anaerobic treatment of the same organic waste.60,000 tons of organic wa-

ste coming from approxi-mately 1 million inhabi-tants is “enhanced” with anaerobic and odorless method each year at the Pinerolo facility.Acea Pinerolo is a com-pany with total public capi-

tal that manages numerous services for municipalities, companies and citizens, from the cycle water ma-nagement to the natural gas distribution, from the heat production to the waste

treatment and, through its subsidiary Acea Environ-ment, to the waste collec-tion and disposal. In addition, the company recently strengthened its role at the regional level in waste management by

a c q u i r i n g (along with I r e n a n d Iren Emilia) 49 percent o f Amia t , reaching the 80 percent share. In this way Acea P i n e r o l e s e

contributes its know-how to the organic fraction tre-atment from selective wa-ste collection with a role of technical and strategic par-tners, in a context of cycle waste management. •

All versions of Mercedes Tourismo on the roads of Croatia. A range of touring coaches and intercity buses popular in all international markets over the course of 22 years

FAMILY MEETING

All in Split, Croatia. That is the real Mer-cedes Tourismo family meeting with 22

years of success in international markets. From the most compact Tourismo K measu-ring 10.3 metres to three-axle Tourismo L of 14 metres, passing through intermediate variants, including the 12.1-metre intercity of Tourismo RH (the 13-metre version in-stead stayed at home).

There is a chance to experience again a sen-sation of climbing the Tourismo K to im-mense oneself in the hinterland of Croatia, trying to hold off the bus exuberance rather than return to appreciate the maneuverabili-ty of the 13-metre three-axle Tourismo M, or even, experiment on mountain roads with the 14-metre Tourismo L. In order to make the most ‘tasty’ experien-

ce, get under the hood of some models, en-gines with more muscular performance than fitted as standard. This is the case of the two-axle, which mounted a 10.7-litre OM 470 delivering 394 horses on the RH ver-sion and 428 horses on the Tourismo of 12 and 13 metres. For other versions, there was no need to power injections because they were already at the maximum. The touring

coach transmission is at maximum level with the GO 250-8 PowerShift automated transmission fitted as standard instead of the manual one that remained only for K and RH versions.All-in-all, Mercedes Tourismo range expo-ses all the best that can offer today the se-cond generation introduced in 2006 with three basic lengths (12, 13 and 14 metres),

subsequently expanded with introduction in 2013 of the compact Tourismo K and Euro VI engines. In addition there was a progres-sive increase of the safety system package, which nowadays also fits as standard AEBS (Advanced Emergency Braking System) and the Lane Assistant LDWS (Lane Departure Warning System). On the occasion of the Split meeting it was even possible to see the new head restra-ints for passenger seats added to the already endless possibilities of interior personali-zation. They are characterized by backrest height extendable up to 85 mm (as in cars)

for adaptation to the individual passenger’s height. The side bolsters of the head restra-ints are also adjustable.Another new feature is the Composition material, which replaces the classic leather hide used for the seat covers, maintaining the comfort characteristics in addition to much easier way of cleaning. To keep up with the times, there are one or two 230 V sockets available per double seat to power passengers’ electronic devices and to optionally install a router (upon request) that incorporates two slots for SIM cards and two USB ports. Reception is by one or

two LTE antennas on the roof.At the beginning we said that the Tourismo family is successful in all international markets over the course of 22 years. To be precise, Mer-cedes-Benz delivers the Tourismo to custo-mers in more than 50 countries. The reason lies in extreme versatility of these touring coaches and a quality / price favorable ra-tio. It is so since the launch of the very first version under the name of O 350 Tourismo

in 1994.Since then more than 22,000 units have been sold including 10,000 of the current generation in-troduced in 2006. Sales of the last year attained a new all-time record of exactly 2,042 units prac-tically in every corner of the planet. Turkey was the top-selling market (its homeland), ahead of Ger-many, France, Great Brita-

in and Italy. Outside Europe they have ar-rived in Australia, the Sultanate of Oman, Chad and Nigeria. This success keeps up. • More articles about Mercedes: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/473/articoli-costruttore-europa
