Among the partners involved in this cooperation there is Volvo Group. •

SPRINTER MINIBUS IN BRANDENBURG

A special Mercedes-Benz Travego M adorned with 135 metres LED fairy lights is available for customers who

can use it for an evening in the pre-Christmas period for their very own Christmas tour. There are already concrete

plans: the Christmas Travego is to accompany the Regensburg Cathedral Choir to a selected Christmas concert. An enterprise from Augsburg intends to use the Christmas Travego to accompany severely disabled children to an event free of charge, and a Straubing bus and coach company is planning to take a kindergarten group to and from a Christmas market. The idea for this unusual Christmas Travego came about at the Mercedes-Benz bus and coach sales office in Munich. The Christmas scene was developed by the DesignStudio at Mannheim’s bus and coach plant, whilst the livery and light system was created by the bus and coach refiner Heymann. The Travego M was originally pure white, and its light system controls now feature multi-stage programming. The system can be switched on and off from the driver’s workstation. In the luggage compartment the operator has several programs from which to choose: a steady light or blinking light with steplessly variable speeds. The colours red, green or blue can be activated in each case. These colours can be used in pairs or combined as a whole. All that remains is to wish you a Merry Christmas. •

THE TRAVEGO FOR A CHRISTMAS TOUR

CITARO LE AND SPRINTER FOR VRN

Europe’s largest pure electric bus fleet is in full opera-tion at the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. There are 35

BYD ebuses transporting passengers between the planes and the terminal buildings. A special ceremony at the air-port celebrated the full service of these electric buses specifically tailored by BYD to meet Schiphol’s requirements. They have fewer battery packs than other ebuses thanks to BYD’s improving power density. This means a good range can be maintained on a single charge while providing more space for passengers and their luggage. BYD also worked closely with the Schiphol authorities to select colours and materials which enhance the riding experience for passengers. The design of the driver’s cabin meets The Netherlands’ stand for Ergono-mic Requirements. Isbrand Ho, Managing Director of BYD Europe, revealed that, “since the Schiphol fleet entered service six months ago, the 35 ebuses have accumulated a total mileage of approximately 338,000 km with an average energy consumption of 1.2 kWh/km. They have saved approximately 312,000 kg of CO2 emissions”. •

FOR BIG ANDSMALL-SIZE BUSES

Equipped with an Allison 1000 Series TM transmission, the Daewoo Lestar will deri-ve several benefits, including ease of dri-ving and decreased costs. Allison’s Continuous Power Technology TM

will prevent the slower response t ime- to- throt t le cycles seen with manuals or auto-mated manuals. Al-lison transfers more torque from the en-gine to the wheels, offering therefore the improved effi-ciency and perfor-mance. •

THE first 18-metre Urbanway full hybrid articulated buses arrived

in Bologna, Italy. That is a part of a nine-unit supply to Tper (Passenger Transport Emi-lia-Romagna). These buses delivered on 24 November by Iveco Bus are the first Euro VI hybrids registered in Italy.

The Urbanway Full Hybrid buses feature a heat engine and an electric drive system with devices that do not emit exhaust gases at bus stops thanks to the energy storage system that, while braking, can prevent the kinetic energy dispersion into heat and transfer it to the lithiu-m-ion batteries that power the electric engine.

In the 4x15M configuration, the high-performance battery system boasts a charging capacity of more than 300 kilowatts and has a useable energy content of over 100 kilowatt. The li-quid-cooled system is freely scaleable, meets the highest safety standards and provides the perfect foundation for powering sche-duled electric buses in an economic and reliable manner thanks to its maintenance-free operation and high degree of technological maturity. The batteries are recharged at the terminals with a fast charging (10.5 minutes) through a pantograph attached to the roof of the bus. •

THE COMPONENTS OF THE BUSWORLD IN KORTRIJK

BITZER - German ma-nufacturer presented the new SPEEDLITE scroll compres-sors. The ELV21 and ELV51 are significantly more com-pact, more lightweight and quieter while providing at least as much or even more perfor-mance than previous models. At the same time, they offer out-standing efficiency and versatility. This is made possible by their modern aluminium design and the ideal combination of scroll spiral, electric motor and frequency inverter brought together in one compact system. The ELV21 is available in a cooling capacity from 0.9 kW to 3.5 kW (ELV2109) or from 0.9 to 5.5 kW (ELV2113). The larger ELV51 reaches a cooling capacity between 7.5 kW and 27 kW. The ELV21 will be available on the market from spring 2016 while for he ELV51 you have to wait till autumn. •

EBERSPÄCHER - Its world premiere at Busworld 2015 is the roof-top air-conditioning system AC230 with heat pump, which works on the air flow reversal functional principle. This inno-vative solution significantly simplifies the refrigerant circuit of a heat pump redu-cing the components and joints. Primarily designed for the central roof-top air ducts in electric, hybrid and trolley buses, it can also be adapted for vehicles with roof-top air ducts at the sides. Another premiere is the Eberspächer Sütrak all-electric ver-sion of the AC 136 G4 air-conditioning system for electric buses and the AC 403 E G2 for the driver’s seat and passenger compartment air-condi-tioning in city buses. •

GRAYSON - Two new products in the bus & coach field were put on dispaly at the Grayson stand. The E-Drive cooling system is now just 74 kilograms (instead of usual 95 kg) and qui-eter operation compared to traditional hydraulic cooling system.

The 24 V water pump for use on hybrid and electric vehicles can offer greater efficiency and engine life expectancy of 20 thousand hours (the engine can be mounted in any position without affecting per-formance). At Busworld Grayson also introduced its new battery thermal ma-

nagement system for full electric vehicles and updated HVAC range, including a heat and AC front box that promises to offer improved maintenance and thanks to its lightweight aluminum frame – considerable weight savings. •

KONVEKTA - The latest development of Konvekta (inventor of air conditioning system for buses with the refrigerant CO2) is the “Generation 2” heat pump system. The Konvekta new system has been awarded with the ECW innovation label 2015 (European Coach and Bus Week) and has been further developed on the basis of the experience gained with the first generation. In the roof-mounted unit, various optimisations have also been undertaken. In order to enhance the performance, individual components have been reconstructed and the control response has been refined for a smooth transition from the heating to the cooling mode. Fol-lowing several internal tests, the second generation of the Kon-vekta CO2 heat pump is undergoing trial at the municipal utilities of Klagenfurt, Austria. •

There is a countless number of specialists in the field that came to examine the best solutions of the international bus production (refer to the BusToCoach issue of November) during the 23rd edition of the Busworld Europe in

October. There is a first selection presented here. To be continued in the next issue

TOM TOM - There are several solutions proposed by TomTom Telematics. OptiDrive 360 provides predictive advice to help the drivers transporting up to nine passengers to adopt a greener, safer driving style. WEBFLEET system allows to easily highlight trends in driving behaviour. A series of in-depth reports then enables operator to drill deeper for greater analysis and to compare the whole fleet. Remaining Driving Time is an add-on available in TomTom WEBFLE-ET which provides operators with a real-time overview of their employees’ daily and weekly remaining driving time under EU working time regulation. The Tachograph Manager is a complete digital ta-chograph solution whi-ch lets coach operators download, analyse and archive their driver performance tachograph data to comply with national and European legislation. Finally, The LINK tracking device is able to integrate with a range of mobile har-dware and in-vehicle devices, with data exchange permitted via Bluetooth. •

MASATS - Iberian manufacturer Masats presented a Stan-dard Door for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter minibus. The new Sprinter door will replace the original manual standard door on this vehicle with a fully-equipped electrical door in all finishes. It opens outward with an aluminium pane and additional fibre finishes required to bring continuity to the vehicle appearance. The single rod electrical equipment allows for an extra seat in the vehicle since it does not interfere with the rotation rod. The run-ning board is included for easy assembly by the manufacturers. Masats also unveiled a high-performing electro-pneumatic 015g Door for coaches with dual sensitivity upon opening/closing, integrated DM3 pneumatic module to ac-commodate all door and emergency ope-ning/closing functions in a single unit. •

ZIEHL-ABEGG - Vehicles fitted with ZAwheel were put on show by German bus manufacturers at Busworld in Kortrijk. There are several European manufacturers that use this solution: VDL Bus & Coach (Netherlands), Hybricon Bus System (Sweden), Ekova Electric (Czech Republic), Troliga (Slovakia), Lider Trading (Poland), Ebe Europe (Germany). There is increasing interest amongst fleet operators in the electric retrofitting of conventionally powered city buses (diesel, gas) with ZAwheel. This is a gearless electric powered low floor axle with integrated water cooled motors in wheel hub (single wheel dri-ve) for use in serial hybrid or full elec-tric vehicles.Any standard bus 10.5 and 12 to 18 metres in length can be easily converted into an electric bus with ZAwheel by being retrofitted with the new ZAaxle drivetrain module. •

ALLISON TRANSMISSION - At Buswor-ld, Allison Transmission showcased the range of its recently expanded fully automatic transmissions. The new XFE mo-dels for buses, where “XFE” designating extra fuel economy, incorporate the latest advances in fuel-efficient technology,

demonstrating improvements of up to 7 percent, obtained by reducing the torque converter action in a quick detachment departing and lowering the number of gear revolutions. Allison will offer three new XFE models in Europe: the T3280 xFETM, T3325 xFETM and T3375 xFETM. The T2100 version from the Torqmatic range, which has newly in-troduced T1000, T2100 and T2200 fully automatic transmission for minibuses, buses and midi buses in Europe, Asia

Pacific, Australia and Latin America, was unveiled in Kortijk. The expansion of the Torqmatic product family provides with a complete range of Allison transmissions featuring the latest product enhancements including the fifth Generation Electro-nic Controls and FuelSense fuel-efficiency software. The H 50 EP hybrid system was also presented on the Allison stand. Since 2003, Allison has delivered over 6,900 hybrid propulsion systems which have accumulated nearly 1.1 billion kilometers, saving an estimated 137 million liters of fuel and preventing almost 360 metric tons of carbon dioxide from en-tering the atmosphere. Finally there is interesting news for the European market: Allison will supply the T525R transmission for the TX range of the Van Hool coaches. It is absolutely new for Europe. •

SCHUNK - There are two solutions developed by Schunk Carbon Technology for transfer-ring the current to the electrical buses: on-board pantographs and inverted pantographs. Mounted onto the bus roof, the former have a special design which guarantees the continuity of the contact pressure against the char-ging station maintained without interruption during all phases, re-gardless of the position. Charging at bus stops, it lasts no more than 15 seconds thanks to a very high electric current transfer capacity (1,000 A). This enables the use of smaller batteries, which allows bus operators to achieve signifi-cant savings. The inverted pantographs are integrated into the existing infrastructure. The current collector automatically ex-tends as soon as the bus reaches the corresponding contact on the bus roof. This system features an open interface which is compa-tible with existing interfaces on the roof of the bus. Schunk also offers contact interfaces of new generation for better utilization of the installation space and integration into the battery system. •

THERMO KING - The brand of Ingersoll Rand, has turned the spotlight on the Athenia™ MkII, the new air-to-air reversible electric heat pump units for hybrid and electric buses. Thanks to the reversible refrigeration circuit they guarantee comfort and high performance. In heating mode, the unit tran-sfers heat from the outside air into the passenger compartment reaching a coefficient of performance level (COP) of up to 4. This means that for each 1kW of electricity consu-med from batteries the heat pump generates up to 4kW of heating. When in cooling mode the unit operates just as Athenia MkII Electric air-conditioning unit. For lowering total power con-sumption, the pump uses an electric variable speed compressor. Moreover, the unit operates independently of the engine speed (rev / min). The Athenia MkII electric heat pumps are compatible with bus roofs with a radius ranging from 7,5me-tres to flat. •

ZF - Among the new ZF products showcased at Busworld there is the redesigned ZF Ecolife 6-speed automatic tran-smission with innova-tive Start/Stop function that reduces fuel consu-mption in urban areas up to 10%. Another preview is the EcoLife Coach transmission variant that now excels with an input torque of up to 2,300 Nm for intercity buses and coaches. 2015 will also see the market launch of the next evolutionary stage of ZF’s successful AVE 130 electric por-tal axle for city buses. The maximum electric output of the two water-cooled, asynchronous motors integrated into the axle will increase from the existing 2 x 120 kW to 2 x 125 kW. At the same time, the effective nominal voltage will increase from 350 to 400 V, while the maximum torque climbs from 2 x 465 Nm to 2 x 485 Nm. Furthermore, additional space for standing areas and seats is created with the new AVE 130 since the conventional drive shaft and propeller shaft at the rear are no longer needed. Thanks to two integrated electric motors, the AVE 130 weighs up to 500 kg less than all other solutions with electric central motor. Another ZF premiere is the AV 133 low-floor axle. Compared to its predecessor AV 132, it was designed for modern BRT and new vehicle generations. The AV 133 has got a weight advantage of 45 kg. The new axle program of the A/AV 110 for midibuses rounds off the product portfolio in this segment. •

engine. The S 208 H is instead the shor-test version of the 200 model series. It measures 7.6 metres, carries up to 29 pas-sengers and is fitted with the OM 352 A engine. The prototy-pe was presented in

Turin in 1979. It counts 494 units produced between 1979 and 1983. The S 210 HD, whi-ch is also 200 model series, was the first high-decker among the compact coaches in 1983 and the first model to feature a conventional rear-wheel drive. It is 9.34 metres high, car-ries 27 passengers and fitted with OM 421 engine. Several other models can be traced in the Setra compact bus history: the S 7 of 1965 (7.67 metres), the S 80 of 1968 (7.69 metres), the S 309 HD of 1994 (8.87 m) and the S 411 HD launched in 2001 (10.16 me-tres). The latest addition is the S 511 HD of the ComfortClass 500. •

The two-axle high-decker, that is 10,465 mm long and 3,770 high, is suitable for various types of equipment and use and serves equally well as a luxurious VIP shuttle or for exclusive club excursions. The vehicle is predestined for the installation of kitchen modules or an exclusive club corner in the rear. The passenger compartment offers the custo-mary high (and usual) level of the Comfor-tClass 500. Apart from the comfortable se-ats with long cushions and spacious luggage racks, these facilities also include LED pas-senger compartment lighting integrated in the service sets above the double seats, and lug-gage compartment of a generous size. The luggage compartment capacity varies according to the position of door 2: 5.3 m3 with a centre entrance and a toilet, 6.5 m3 without a WC module and 7.3 m3 with a rear entrance. The number of passengers varies from a mi-nimum of 32 in the 5-star variant to a maxi-mum of 41 in 3-star classification (38 with rear entrance). The driver benefits from a host of innovative developments which have been incorporated into the design concept for the ComfortClass

500. These include a leather multifunction steering wheel, an air-conditioned driver’s workplace and a clearly laid-out dashboard in the ergonomically shaped Coach Comfort cockpit. The S 511 HD coaches are powered by the OM 470 six-cylinder in-line engines

belonging to the “Blue Efficiency Power” en-gine generation. These engines comply with the Euro VI stan-dard and are rated at 290 kW (394 hp). They are fitted with the standard GO 210 six-speed manual transmission (fully automated GO 250 8 PowerShift eight-speed transmission is

available as an option). The S 511 HD does not go short on safety. The Front Collision Guard (FCG), the advan-ced emergency braking system (AEBS) and the Lane Assistant all feature as standard. Ac-tive Brake Assist 3 (ABA 3) complete with ART are optionally available. •

T he Interlink LD is equipped on the same platform of the

9-litre diesel engine with five-cylinders. It’s the Otto cycle OC09 for natural gas and bio-gas, in the new Euro VI version.

It delivers 320 horsepower (235 kW) and 1,500 Nm torque, avail-able between 1,100 and 1,400 rpm. It is the same engine used for the urban Citywide deliver-ing 280 hp. There is stoichiomet-ric combustion, ie with an air-gas ratio λ = 1 (17.28 pounds of

air per pound of methane), so as to completely burn the methane and reduce the NOx emissions. To further reduce pollutants (CO2, NOx and HC) it adopts a system of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with indirect injection and a three-way catalyst.

Eight 150-litre cylinders with a to-tal capacity of 1,200 litres, which corresponds to approximately 200 kg of methane at 200 bar pressu-re (or 290 normal cubic metres of methane) are foreseen for stocking the methane. At the rear (with fire protection

system), the engine is mounted longitudinally and combined with the ZF Ecolife 6AP 1400B auto-matic transmission. The EBS elec-tronic brake system is complete with ABS, Traction Control (TC), Bus stop brake, Hill Hold and ESP (optional). •

DA oltreFor over 20 years it is charac-terized by being the solution for

anyone looking for that ideal combination of economy, safety and comfort on long jour-neys. And the figures demonstrate it clearly. The Mercedes Tourismo, initially known as O 350 Tourismo, was introduced to the market in 1994 and since then sold in over 21,000 units (as of 2014). Now it is offered in the price range more affordable than that of the top range O 404 and nowadays than Mercedes Travego.

THE TEST ROUTEPASSENGERS

Improved and modernized in 2006, the se-cond generation of the Tourismo is offered in lengths of 12.1, 13 and 14 metres (9,400 units sold at the end of 2014). In 2013 it was fitted with the 10.7 litre OM 470 Euro VI and in 2014 Mercedes-Benz presented a ran-ge of new assistance and safety systems in-cluding assistan-ce in emergency braking AEBS (Advanced Emer-gency Braking System).Four years ago we had tested the 12.1-metre Mer-cedes Tourismo fitted with the Euro V engine (refer to BusTo-Coach of January 15, 2012) and now it is back on the same route of 342 km to test its 14-metre three-a-xle version, loaded with 21,400 kg of ballast. It is fitted with the OM 470 engine deve-loping 428 hp (315 kW) mated to the Mer-cedes GO 250-8 MPS eight-speed automatic transmission.

Simplicity in progressIN the test vehicle there

are explicit possibilities to configure the interior of the Tourismo L according to the de-sired comfort level. 52 Travel Star Eco passenger seats corre-spond to four-star classification and are fixed on raised platform covered by imitation-wood fin-ishes. There are also a toilet with the capacity of waste tank of approximately 150 litres, a vending machine for snacks and hot drinks and waste dis-posal units on the steps of the central staircase disappearing into waste containers in the lug-gage compartment. The power-ful air conditioning system with an output of 35 kW is comple-mented by the auxiliary heating with convectors on the floor.

The entrance area, the toilet and the cockpit are heated separately. Under the luggage racks one can find a service set with loudspeak-ers connected to the Bosch Pro-fessional Line 3 and two 17-inch video monitors.Passengers also have access to

online services, thanks to the wireless LAN. The system instal-led here can support between five and eight people on line at any one time. The power is supplied by a 230-volt socket alongside each double seat, powered by a 2300 watt inverter. •

èè

Page 17: BUSTOCOACH EUROPEAN ON-LINE MAGAZINE - December 2015

S paciousness and rational ar-rangement always plays a

crucial role in the Tourismo’s cockpit. The gear change lever joystick is well located on the navigating bridge, rightwards to the instrument panel, just below the radio set and climate control. It is equipped with all possible settings: the pneumatic seat is also heated, fitted with folding armrests and swivel 90 degrees. The position lowered by ap-proximately 40 centimetres with respect to the corridor enhance the external visibility through two rear-view mirrors, electri-cally adjustable, heated and fol-ded in mechanically in case of need. The third rearview emergency driving mirror can be used on either side and is fixed within the luggage compartment. There is also a reversing camera with

integrated washer system moun-ted on the rear window, which refers the images to the naviga-tion monitor on the left above the dashboard. Here also come the images taken by the camera that controls the entrance area around door two.

Coming back to visibility, the test vehicle is fitted with xenon low-beam headlamps with a hi-gh-pressure washer system and

front fog lamps. For the safety there is an alcohol interlock sy-stem that ensures the zero blood -alcohol level of any driver. •

The fuel consumption is lower compared to the Euro V, considering that the Tourismo measuring 12.1 metres and weighing 3.5 tons less had consumed an average of one litre of diesel per 4.05 km, while our Tourismo of 14 metres held the average of 4.16. A good result also in comparison with the three-axle Euro V coaches tested by BusToCoach (re-fer to the table at the end of the article). In comparison with the three-a-xle Euro VI, the Tourismo L, however, has to settle for third place, with a performance in-dex of 8.12 po-ints, also pena-lized by a lower average speed of 78.1 km/h. Behi-nd the brilliant 13.3-metre Setra S 516 HDH (te-sted weight of 21,100 kg) with an average of 4.45 km/litre and slightly behind the Irizar/Scania i6 HDH 14.37 though much hi-gher and heavier (23,840 kg) with an average of 4.2 km/litre. And both maintained an average speed supe-rior to 81 km / h.To emphasize the versatility of the test Tou-rismo L, we mounted a wheelchair lift Gobel 300 behind the first axle on the right side, to embark a disabled wheelchair through the dedicated separate door. The double se-ats in rows can be replaced by two wheel-chairs spaces with the necessary anchoring systems. For scheduled long-distance services, the Tourismo L can also have a TopTravel desti-nation indicator system with matrix display behind the windscreen like on the tested vehicle.

T he Tourismo L features the Mercedes OM 470 engine

with a 10.7-litre displacement, developing 428 horsepower (315 kW) at 1,800 rpm and a maxi-mum torque of 2,100 Nm at 1,100 rpm. The common-rail injection system with pressure booster (X-Pulse) provides the basis for low fuel consumption and low exhaust gas emissions. To meet the Euro VI, the previous BlueTec tech-nology with SCR and AdBlue injection was combined with the exhaust gas recirculation and a closed particulate filter. It is nec-essary to emphasize that thanks to the exhaust gas recirculation the amount of nitrogen oxides goes down and therefore the consump-tion of AdBlue decreases (in our case it fell down to 2.1%). Main-tenance of the particulate filter is not required until the vehicle’s mileage reaches 360,000 km, and then only every 240,000 km. The entire post-treatment system

of exhaust gases (oxidation cata-lyst, particulate filter and the SCR catalyst) is combined in a single body.Power is transferred by the excel-lent GO 250-8 MPS automated ei-

ght-speed transmission, approved for the torque input up to 2,500 Nm. The Voith hydrodynamic secondary water retarder with braking torque of 3,500 Nm is integrated in the gearbox. •

The underfloor luggage compartment, acces-sed via centralized pantograph locker doors with lifting mechanisms, has a capacity of 10.7 cubic metres taking into account the toilet (without it reaches 12 cubic metres), with additio-nal space above the wheel-chair lift, behind the second door and above the axles.Classic simplicity of the ex-terior appearance and func-tionality of the interior leave no chance either for enrichi-ng the equipment comfort or further integrating the already robust safety sy-stem package featured as standard. The EBS electronically controlled braking system in the tested Tourismo L, is integrated with all pos-sible assistance systems. In addition to usual ABS, ASR and ESP there were AEBS, the system of lane keeping LDWS (Lane De-parture Warning System, also known as Lane Assi-stant or SPA), Brake Assist (BAS) that mi-nimizes the braking distance. There are also downhill speed limiter (DBL), the rain/light sensor on the windscreen, the smoke detec-tor in the luggage compartment and automa-tic fire extinguishing system in the engine compartment. It is completely manufactured at Mercedes-Benz Türk plant in Hoşdere.•
