KARSAN IN ITALY AND EUROPE

THE Setra TopClass 500 and the ComfortClass 500 received the “German Design Award“

“Special Mention 2015” in the “Excellent Product Desi-gn – Transportation and Public Design” product category. The “Rat der Formgebung” (Design Council), a brand and design entity founded in 1953 on the initiative of the German Bundestag was unanimous in its reasons: “A systematically aerodynamic design for the outer shell with an innovative aero tail end shapes the overall impression of this touring coach family. Elements such as the progressive side line lend the 500 model series an elegant, luxurious appearance. A unity of comfort, value appeal, form and colour results from the interplay of the equipment items. It goes without saying that there is an ergonomic design for the driver’s area. The LED lighting ensures both safety and a homely atmosphere.” •

GERMAN DESIGN AWARD

established on 12 December 2014 for the sale and service of Karsan vehicles in Western Europe. The headquarters

We believe that the Karsan range is the right answer to the demands of the European markets for urban and suburban transport because they have been designed for the European markets”, said David Siviero, general director of Karsan Italy. The “Karsan Otomotiv Sanayii ve Ticaret A.Ş.” is one of the most important automotive manufacturers in Turkey, specializing in the design, production and sale of buses for urban and suburban transport. • VDL CITEA BUSES

IN BERLIN

BusToCoach on-line Magazine - March 2015 FLASH NEWS

THE low-floor Solaris Tramino is under test in Cra-cow, Poland, on behalf of the Cracow City

Transport (MPK). For the next three months, the 32 metres Solaris tram will run on line 1 from Nowa Huta to the city centre. The fully low-floor, multiarticulated vehicle consists of five body sections. The step-free interior is featured with air conditioning system and LED lighting. Energy recovered during braking can be stored in supercapacitors. During acceleration, energy is sourced from the supercapacitors to reduce consumption from the overhead network. In this way, energy use can be reduced by between 20% and 30% when compared to other trams on market. It is the first vehicle in Poland with this technology. The low-floor Solaris city buses Urbino are instead well known to the pas-sengers of public transport in Cracow. •

142 OTOKAR VECTIO C FOR MALTA

O tokar Europe, the subsidiary of the Turkish company which is part of Koç Group, received a large order for 142 Vec-

tio C buses in the right-hand drive version. The vehicles have been commissioned in Malta from Spanish city buses operator CUNISA. Deliveries are scheduled before the end of 2015. This is the largest right hand drive order for a Turkish bus manufac-turer. The Vectio C is a 9.6 m. medium-size low entry bus for

SOLARIS TRAMINO IN CRACOW

IN early February entered service in Berlin, Ger-many, the first 40 VDL Citea LLE buses of the

236 ordered by BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe) in the summer of 2014. The Citea LLE has a net weight of approximately 9 tonnes, and according to BVG’s own tests, it consumes 20% less diesel fuel than comparable products with a reduction of around 18 tonnes of har-

mful substance emissions per year, per vehicle. The combination VDL Citea LLE Euro VI and a consumption reduction of 20% also cuts NOx emissions by 95%. This represents a major step for BVG towards achieving their corporate objective of reducing CO2 emissions by 20% in the period from 2010 to 2020. The company also supports the plans of the city government of Berlin to make the city climate-neutral by 2050. •

OPTARE SOLO SR IN ENGLAND

THE British manufacturer Optare supplied five Solo SR buses to Gateshead Central Taxis, a taxi

company based in Gateshead, a large town in the Northeast of England. The Optare Solo buses for Gateshead Central Taxis are 9 m long and seat up to 31 passengers. The low entry floor combined with the front axle forward of the door allows for easy access to a fully flat lower saloon area, making these buses

easily accessible for all. Featured with Euro 5 engine, the vehicles will serve multiple routes around Gateshead on behalf of Nexus operator. Gateshead Central Taxis have over 200 vehicles, including a 24 hour taxi fleet and the largest range of specialist wheelchair accessible vehicles in the Northeast of England. •

THE very first Van Hool Exqui.City 100% electric buses have been ordered in Hamburg, Ger-

many. The four-door, articulated buses are 18.61 m long and 2.55 m wide with a height of 3.5 m. They can transport up to 109 passengers (46 people sitting). The vehicles will be charged overnight in the depot. Throughout the day, 40 minute charging sessions at either end of the bus line are foreseen. Furthermore the buses will produce part of the energy they need themselves: whenever the vehicle brakes it cre-ates electrical power that can be stored in the battery and re-used on the vehicle’s return journey. The buses’ batteries are charged using charging points on the roof of the bus. The two articulated buses will be delivered early 2016 and will be in operation on the busiest bus route in Hamburg: the M3 line. •

SETRA MULTICLASSIN AUSTRIA

THE three-axle Enviro500 double deck bus manufactured in Britain by Alexander

Dennis Limited (ADL) was tested last December in Gyeonggi-do, the most populous province in South Ko-rea. The three weeks of trials took an overwhelmingly positive response from passengers, drivers and opera-

ting companies. “The double deck trial was borne out of a search for buses with a higher seating capacity to meet the needs of the daily commuters”, said Paul Davies, Director and General Manager of ADL’s Asia Pacific operations. “What we’ve proven is that the Enviro500 not only fulfils this basic requirement, it also brings with it many other benefits, most notably the improved access for wheelchair users, excellent fuel efficiency, outstanding manoeuvrability and the fact that it can carry twice as many seated passengers as the current single deck buses”. •

NEW BUS REGISTRATIONS IN EUROPE (ACEA source)

*) ANFIA estimate, based on data of the Italian Ministry of Transport.

Registrations of buses and coaches on the EU’s borders increased by 1.4% in year 2014. Spain, Ireland and Greece are recovering balance

THE situation on the European coach market remains positive, but not

that much that subsequently reduces the growth margins. According to the data provided by ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association), buses of more than 3.5 tones regi-stered in year 2014 on the EU’s borders amoun-ted to 33,561 compared to 33,083 in year 2013. In fact, we have got a slight increase of 1.4%. Practically, the value of the previous year has been halved. In 2014, the UK was the European country with the highest number of buses registered (6,669 vehicles), followed by France (5,896 vehicles) and Germany (5,651 vehicles). These markets collectively represent more than 50 percent of registered transport vehicles across the Europe. But this area of the old continent is not the best for registration performance. Indeed, bad news are coming from the above-mentioned markets. In fact, France comes to lose 15.3%, UK – 4.1%, while Germany is limited to 3%.Other market segments are showing signs of re-covery. Let us start with the southern European countries affected by the crisis of recent years, such as Spain, Portugal and Greece. In the Ibe-rian Peninsula, the buses registered in 2014 rose to 1,896 that means 15% more compared to 1,648 vehicles in year 2013.

In Portugal they increased from 174 to 239 (+ 37.4%) while in Greece from 100 to 175 (+ 75%). Italy is the only exception among the Mediterranean countries. After the trend rever-sal in 2013, the beautiful country of Italy tends toward going into negative figures with 1,975 coach registrations against 2,372 ones the year before. The decline is rather drastic (-16.7%).Quite the opposite is observed in the Northern Europe, where the business seems to be going rather well. In 2014, Belgium increased the registration of buses by 49.3% (from 765 to 1,142), (the neighboring Netherlands by 14.1% (from 583 to 665) and further north, in Finland, the registration even increased by 78.1 % (from 388 to 691 vehicles). The Eastern Europe shows good performances as well: + 20.9% in Slovenia, +19.1% in the Czech Republic, +62.5 in Slovakia. It goes well in Romania where the registered buses reach the number of 1,148, with an in-crease of + 32.7%.You cannot say the same about the EFTA’s members (European Free Trade Association). Norway lost 19.4% (1,015 vehicles compared to 1,259 in 2013) and Iceland lost 10.8%. On the contrary, Switzerland in 2014 is catching up and increasing the number of vehicles by 11.9%. •

A CENTURY OF HISTORY

TO equip buses and coaches with automated external

defibrillators (AEDs) as an option. This is the aim of the collaboration agreement signed by VDL Bus & Coach with Royal Philips, a diver-sified technology company ope-rating in the areas of Healthcare, Consumer Lifestyle and Lighting. The AED kit on board gives users live support and coaching from first responders at a central location during resuscitation and also makes remote maintenance and service possible. In addition, it is possible to see in real-time whether an AED has been activated and determine its exact location via GPS. The AED is delivered as factory installed equipment. Bus and coach operators are relieved of responsibility for maintenance and testing by Philips’ new full-service model, in which the AED and everything associated with it can be purchased from Philips as a service for a fixed amount per month. An esti-mated seven million people die as a result of sudden cardiac arrest in the United States and Europe each year.By installing an AED help can be provided immediately in emergency si-tuations while underway. This will considerably improve the chance of survival of bus and coach passengers who suffer a cardiac arrest. •

THE LIFE-SAVING

2014 was a very good year for for Ziehl-Abegg.

The German manufacturer of fans and motors increased global sales by 9 percent to EUR 423 million. The significant growth generated by foreign companies enabled the company to press further ahead with investments of more than 20 million euro in the expansion of the pro-duction locations. The good growth is also reflected in the size of the workforce. “For the first time we now employ more than 3,400 people worldwide”,

stated Chief Financial Officer Achim Curd Rägle. The pro-spects for the current year will be shaped by several negatives starting with the Russian crisis that will continue to leave its mark on many countries in 2015. The low oil price will pro-vide a tough test of the willingness to invest in the Arab states and the low commodity process will impact on the economies of Brazil and Australia. The obvious sound economic growth in the USA provides the one sure ray of hope. •

IN March last year we wrote that the Cen-tury “definitely left the stage at the end

of 2013”. We were wrong, it did not. At least when it comes to the Italian market.Despite the fact that on the website of the Spanish manufacturer there is no trace in a panorama of models offered, in Italy they keep offering it (of course, Scania chassis-ba-

sed only). People in charge of Irizar Italy say that, “it is supposed to complete the full ran-ge and continues to be a success; we have a strong intention to continue its marketing, alongside with the other models. In 2014, 15 more units were delivered chosen from the different proposed models.”In the range of Irizar Italy’s ttourism coaches

It wasn’t the Century’s last bow on the stage. The Irizar Century keeps gaining recognition among many and not just for its low price. The Euro VI model based on Scania-chassis is marketed in Italy as luxury coach

the Century is considered to be the basic mo-del, better equipped than other models, and, evidently more affordable. Moreover, the equi-

pment can be optionally enriched at any time. The Century high decker in the traditional size of 12 meters purchased by Viaggi Men-ghi, IS equipped with 53 Inaza T5 reclining seats, with leatherette headrest and adjustable armrest. There is nothing more to be desired for the passengers` comfort, which is assu-red thanks to the Hispacold air conditioning system with air recirculation and separate temperature control, heating floor convectors powered by the Spheros 300, the Actia au-

dio-video system with 21-inch and 14-inch screens, personal set under the open racks and interior neon li-ghting fixed to the ceiling, flanked by the night lights.Remains unaltered the driver’s workstation, with its suspension seat and enveloping dashboard with well-organized driving controls layout. On the central dashboard, there is a menu page selection (with data, diagnostics and fault re-port), as well there is a Steering Wheel Remo-te Control like for the cruise control. It is no-teworthy that there is a system that analyzes and assesses the driver’s driving style, pre-senting live feedback and giving optimization tips on the LCD display. There is an option to set up a continuous reporting and monitoring system (upon request) through the operation center via GPS.All this is supported by a Scania K410 EB 4x2 chassis powered by DC13-engine with 410 hp (302 kW) and a torque of 2,100 Nm available between 1,000 and 1,300 rpm, whi-ch complies with the Euro VI requirements through SCR technology (without exhaust gas recirculation) with AdBlue injection into the exhaust gas. In the rear part of the vehicle, to the right, there is a place easily found for

the urea tank. There is a perfect match with the Scania Opti-cruise 8 speed automated gearbox, upgraded by retarder, which transmits drive to ADA 1300 rear axle.Electronically controlled air suspension, inde-pendent wheels on the front axle and braking system with dashboard display indicator showing rate of depreciation of the pads on each wheel. It is of no importance that nearly ten years have passed from the moment of last re-styling; the Century exterior aesthetics keeps measuring up just fine to younger generation, with its line decidedly tilted at the bottom of the first side windows and its front part that traces the characteristics of other Irizar i6 & PB models. The side luggage doors with a pantograph opening pneumatically-controlled from the driver’s seat still prove to be an ad-vantage of the Spanish manufacturer. • More articles about Irizar: www.bustocoach.com/en/node/487/articoli-costruttore-europa

7900 ELECTRIC HYBRID

D ecember 2014, the first three Volvo 7900 Electric Hybrid buses entered into opera-

tion in Hamburg, where the local Hamburger Hochbahn AG transport company is testing them on route 109. Three months before the Electric Hybrid bus was introduced at the IAA in Hanover, con-firming once again the strategy of the Swedi-

sh manufacturer, which for several years has been offering for public transport services only citybus with hybrid and electric drive, gaining the position of the first provider of that type of bus. Volvo launched its first diesel hybrid bus in 2009 and since then has delive-red more than 5 thousand electric and hybrid buses in 21 countries. The 7900 Electric Hybrid is the most advan-ced solution in the field of electrified public transport systems. The Volvo Electric Hybrid Driveline is an extension of the well-proven driveline used in the Volvo Hybrid. The diffe-rence lies in a more powerful electric motor, increased energy storage and equipment for opportunity charging. The new Volvo 7900 Electric Hybrid bus ena-bles the reduction of fuel consumption and carbon dioxide by up to 75%, compared with a conventional diesel powered bus, the reduc-tion of total energy consumption by 60%, and permits to operate in electric mode a distance of 7 km, i.e. about 70% of a route. It is a 12-metre long bus that features a Volvo I-SAM electric motor of 150 kW, a four-cylin-der diesel engine of 177 kW, a Volvo I-Shift transmission and a 600 volt lithium-ion bat-tery with storage capacity of 19 kWh. Under the agreement Siemens will supply

high-power charging stations (charging ca-pacity of up to 300 kW) for the system re-charging.Within the framework of the ZeEus European

project, two 7900 Electric Hybrid buses will be put into operation in Stockholm, Sweden, for a trial period of two years. The mass pro-duction is planned for early 2016. •

The Opportunity Charging System provides automatic charging of batteries in electric hybridsand full-electric buses. The sy-stem is designed to be part of or-dinary bus stops and it constitutesthe complete interface between the energy grid and the vehicle.

The Electric Hybrid Driveline permits electric drive up to 7 km between char-

gings. It consists of five building blocks: the Volvo D5K Euro VI diesel engine,

electric motor/generator, energy Storage System (ESS),

rapid charging system, Volvo I-Shift automated gearbox.

VOLVO ELECTROMOBILITYSOLUTION

FOR more than a year we have been observing them at international

shows, we have seen them win major com-petitions in all European countries, but till now only a few showed their willingness to undergo road tests of spezialized magazines. City buses powered by new Euro VI engines were kept jealously protected from indepen-dent assessments, as if their highly praised performances are still in need of tune-ups and confirmations. The only exception is Merce-des with its Citaro Euro VI delivered to the press at the end of 2013 (refer to BusToCoach test of September 2013).Here comes forward, without a moment’s de-lay, the Otokar with its Kent C, made availa-ble by Mauri Bus System which represents the Turkish manufacturer on the Italian market. The Kent C is a 12-metre long Citybus with a low floor and three double doors for pas-

There is a jumbo seat above the front wheel arch that creates a free space for a 750mm wide corridor and, in the central part, to the wheelchair space on the left side can be added the space at the side of the door whe-re there are three seats against the wall.In total, there are 29 seats, 16 of them mounted on a raised base in the rear part of the vehicle and three of them under the rear

window, next to the engine com-partement rearward. There are the Kiel Ideo with a pillow on the seat, and also a top handle. There is enough place up to 72 standing passengers. The interior fittings are comple-

ted with tube-shaped handrails made of polished steel, many small glass panels in front of the exposed seats, support surfaces above the front wheel arches, longitudinal neon ceiling lights flanked by two electric hatches

As well, re-mains unchanged the combination with the Voith automatic gear-box.With this configuration it was presented for si-mulated drive test in the streets of Milan, having a total weight of 14,794 kg (and a ballast corre-sponding to about half the paylo¬ad). While traveling the heating system was turned on (outside ambient tempe-rature was around 9 de-grees); the Kent C has made two 26km long circles round the city, simulating the stops every 500 meters and consuming an average of one litre of diesel fuel every 1,92 km. The average travelling speed was 15.4 km / h.The results proved to be slightly lower than those obtained on the same route by Mercedes Citaro that had reached 2.04 km/litre, with an

A fter changeover to Euro VI, the Kent C abandons the

Deutz engine in favor of a 6.7-li-tre Cummins ISB engine with similar service performance of 285 hp (209 kW) and a torque of 1,200 Nm available between 1,050 and 1,650 rpm. Practically all the time when traveling all over the city.A six-cylinder Cummins engine adopts common rail injection, variable turbine geometry, and for the reduction of polluting emissions, a mix of gas recircu-lation (EGR), catalyst reduction (SCR) and diesel particulate filter (DPF).Placed in the left corner rearwa-rd, the engine or all the connec-ted parts are accessible not only from the rear door alongside with folding bumper, but also from the outer door on the left side and from the interior cabinet. There is Voith Diwa 6.854 four-speed automatic gearbox with an integrated hydraulic retarder and

online transmission to the ZF rear axle. There is an excellent accessibili-ty to all the technical equipment. On the right-hand side rearward there is a place for the AdBlue tank, on the left, in front of the

average speed of 16 km/h.The explanation for this difference may lie in different running state of mechanical parts/equipment: the Kent C has just left the fac-tory, getting only 758 kilometres of car mi-leage while the Citaro had already completed routes over 31 thousand kilometres. As a result, lower friction for the Citaro and consumption penalty for the Kent. In fact, it is common knowledge that reliable values of consumption are obtained while te-sting a vehicle that has already covered a di-stance between 10,000 and 50,000 kilometres. So, the Kent C can only get better.Another factor to keep in mind when assessing the consumption detec-ted (it can be applied to all vehicles), is Milan’s traffic loading level: narrow streets dotted with traffic lights and overabundance of cars. This is also evidenced by average speed va-lues observed, namely: 15.4 km/h for the Kent C and 16 km/h for the Citaro, despite the fact that 40% of the urban test route passes throu-gh lanes reserved for buses (as well as for many taxis and authorized types of vehicles). For the rest, the Kent C proves to be a good item, well equipped interiorly, quiet and with excellent driving characteristics thanks to in-dependent suspension on the front axle. •
