B9 Y orkton This Week | www.Y orktonThisWeek.com | Wednesday, April 1, 2015 LUCAS - On December 4, 1979, parents, Joe and Cheryl (nee Chillog) Bisschop, sister, Teri and brother, Jeff, were proud to announce that Joelle Lynn Bisschop was born in Yorkton, SK. Joelle attended St. Mary’s Elementary School and completed her education at Sacred Heart High School, graduating in 1998. Being the social butterfly that she was, Joelle was always the life of a party whether among family or friends. She always had a smile and a hug for everyone. An outgoing, loving person, Joelle’s sunny nature and free spirit enriched the lives of all who knew her. Growing up, she began to develop a passion for animals - she loved them all! The family home became home to a variety of animals including turtles, cats, dogs, fish, birds, etc. When they ran out of room inside the house, her Dad had to build a pig pen for her pot-bellied pig, a rabbit cage, a dog house and trans- formed the playhouse into a bird sanctuary (for crows!). Joelle was very ambitious and after completing high school she worked at various jobs and at every job she gained not only experience but also many friendships. While in Calgary, working at Telus, she met the love of her life, Matt Lucas and they traded their big city life to move to Esterhazy, SK. On July 8, 2006, Joelle and Matt were united in marriage and Melville, SK soon became their home. There they were blessed with the births of their daughter, Jersey and son, Ty. Joelle loved her family and friends and revelled in the simple things in life. She took a lot of pride in providing her husband and children with a loving home. In everything that Joelle did, she always put others first and always had a positive outlook. Her smile lit up every room that she walked in to. Joelle loved camping, fishing, biking, tending to her yard and being closely involved in all of her children’s activities, being the #1 hockey mom/fan. She was meticulous when it came to organizing events and could always be counted on to help whole-heartedly. On March 20, 2015, Joelle’s journey continued as she became one of the most special angels that heaven will ever know. She entered the gates of heaven on the first day of Spring so henceforth spring cleaning started pronto. Joelle first took care of a little dust on the pearly gates and feathers began flying everywhere as she cleaned and reorganized things. We know this, because we have already found a few feathers. Even without these special gifts that she has sent us, Joelle will remain forever in our hearts. Joelle is survived by her husband and best friend, Matt and their children, daughter, Jersey and son, Ty. Joelle leaves to cherish her memory, her loving parents, Joe and Cheryl Bisschop; her sister, Teri (Craig) Herman and their son, Brady; her brother, Jeff (Jennifer) Bisschop and their children, Jayden and Jaxon; her grandmothers, Ann Bisschop and Mary Chillog as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. STATCHUK - Robert Statchuk passed away at the Foam Lake Jubilee Care Home on March 19, 2015 at the age of 85 years. Robert was born on the family home- stead in the Buchanan District on December 13, 1929, the second child of five born to John and Anne (Rudnitski) Statchuk. He received his education from Monastyr School. Throughout his schooling, he continued to assist his family on the farm. Eventually, he ventured to Ontario where he gained em- ployment in various jobs. Mainly concentrating in the Auto Body Industry, Robert worked at May’s Auto Body in Toronto for a number of years. On May 24, 1958, Robert married the love of his life, Anne Kucy. While still in Toronto, the couple were blessed with two children, Rosanne and Tracy. In 1962, drawn by his love for farm life, Robert relocated his family back to the Buchanan area. As a family, they met the many challenges of grain farming operations and raising cattle. While they spent the winter of 1965 living in Saskatoon, where Robert worked with his brother-in-law Archie at an auto body shop, when spring came, they moved back to the farm in Buchanan. Robert and Anne were blessed with two more children, Curt and Jeremy and together they worked to maintain the farm and raise their four children. Additionally, Robert operated an auto body shop on the farm called “Bob’s Auto Body” which he worked part time as a supplement to agriculture. Robert also spent many summers setting up steel buildings. Although he had many hobbies, farming and auto body remained his passion. He loved to curl in the winter and golf in the summer; the story of his ‘hole-in-one’ was an obvious favourite to tell. He was a very hard working, diligent and reliable man who kept his family a priority. Sundays were always ‘family time’ - a day for gathering at church, going for drives, crop checking and meals en- joyed together with family and friends. Robert upheld a strong, evident faith which was depicted through his active involvement in the church. A devoted Catholic, Robert never missed Mass. Over the years, he assisted the Priests as well as facilitated many church activities. Robert was also a valued member of the Knights of Columbus. In 2007, Robert and Anne decided to sell the farm and move to Canora. They resided in Canora for three years, at which time Robert’s health began to fail, thus prompting their relocation to Victoria Court in Yorkton. After three more years, Robert moved to the Foam Lake Jubilee Home, where he received loving, compassionate, dignified care and resided there until his passing. Robert fought a long battle with Alzheimer’s and heart complications. However, he never complained through his illness. His resounding final words of advice to his children were, “Life’s too short - live it well!” . Robert will be remembered as a loving, kind, caring man who would help anyone in need. He always shared his smile and happy disposition and every child and grandchild were ‘his favourite’ . He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Robert was predeceased by his parents, John and Annie; brother, Walter; nephew, Cory Statchuk in infancy; brothers-in-law: Archie Hearn and Alex Kucy and his sister-in-law, Phyllis Statchuk. He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife, Anne; his children: Rosanne (Don) Brezinski, Tracy, Curt (Adele) and Jeremy; five grandchildren: Jesse, Rylan (Toni), Haley (Dan), Brandyn and Reid; sisters: Mary Hearn and Lorraine (Claude) Slogoski and brother, Maurice; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Prayer Service was held on Monday, March 23, 2015 at 7:00 pm from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora. Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 11:00 am from the Descent of the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, Buchanan with Very Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac, as Celebrant. Rite of Committal followed in the Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Buchanan. Those wishing to make expres- sions of sympathy may make donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan or to the Descent of the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church as tokens of remembrance in memory of Robert Statchuk. Family and friends unable to attend may sign an on-line guest book for Robert at www.lesonsfuneralhome.ca. Arrangements were entrusted to LESON’S FUNERAL HOME, Canora. Jenny is 43, cute, sweet, bubbly, girl-next-door. She has owned her own catering business for almost 10 years. Jenny is divorced, and has a teenage daughter. She has been single for about 2 years and is looking for the right man. She is a very successful, positive, happy person with a great sense of humor who loves to bring joy

and laughter to others. She loves going to the movies, skating, yoga, home cooked meals, and going on nature walks. When not working you can find her in the kitchen cooking up new recipes and improving old ones. Working so much has prevented her from finding a serious relationship. She is looking for a good man who is kind, down-to-earth, honest, loyal, and will be her taste-tester as she jokingly put it.

PLAN NUMBER 7-3-970

HANDSOME NON BASEMENT HOME

The great room’s lofty, double-height ceiling lends this two-storey, three-bedroom family home a dash of elegance.

The entrance is shel-tered by a covered porch. Through the front door, flanked by sidelights, is the foyer, with a coat closet on the left and a den on the right. The hallway leads past a pow-der room and through an archway to the open living-dining area at the heart of the home.

The great room’s gas fireplace will make this room especially comfort-able during the cooler months, and a covered deck – reached via slid-ing doors from the din-ing room – will provide the ideal location for the barbecue.

The kitchen is sepa-rated from the dining room and great room by a work island with a raised eating bar. A large pan-try will provide always-welcome storage, and the U-shaped counter config-uration will save steps for the cook.

Natural light will flood into all three rooms through the large win-dows that overlook the back garden.

The laundry room, adjacent to a closet for family gear, has access to the double garage, which contains room for a work-shop.

Just outside the master suite, also with a view of the back gar-den, is a display case for ornaments and collect-ibles, as well as a linen cupboard. The en-suite includes double basins, a shower stall and a soaker tub with a tiled surround, adding a touch of spa-like luxury. The roomy walk-in closet completes the lay-out.

Ceilings on the main floor all reach nine feet – 18 feet in the great room.

A U-shaped stairway leads to the unfinished basement, included in the plans, and to the sec-ond floor, where the sec-ond and third bedrooms, plus a loft area, three-piece bath and linen cup-board surround a railed area that is open to the great room below. The third bedroom includes a walk-in closet, and both bedrooms feature an extra-deep sill.

Exterior finishes include wood shingles in the gables, along with old-fashioned shutters at the upstairs windows, as well as at a vent over the garage. Stone-based pilasters, decorative

woodwork and partly mullioned windows com-plete the classic look.

This home measures 44 feet wide and 55 feet deep, for a total of 1,575 square feet, excluding the unfinished basement.

Plans for design 7-3-970 are available for $725 (set of 5), $820(set of 8) and $896 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges.

Our NEW 47TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is avail-able for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and han-dling). Make all cheque and money orders pay-able to “JENISH HOUSE DESIGN LTD” and mail to:

A look at April Fool’s Day impactView from the Cheap

Seats is kind of an exten-sion of the newsroom. Whenever our three regular reporters, Calvin Daniels, Thom Barker and Randy Brenzen are in the building together, it is frequently a site of heated debate. This week: Is April Fool’s day a benefit or detriment to society?

Don’t be fooledIt might be a little bit

of a stretch to make a case that April Fool’s Day is either good or bad for society.

There is very good evidence, however, that humour is good for soci-ety. In addition to the release that a good laugh brings, scientists say playing pranks on one another is an import-ant element of bonding

between humans and a great icebreaker.

More important from my perspective is April 1 puts everyone on their guard. As much as we may take being pranked good-naturedly, nobody really wants to be fooled.

On this one morning, critical thinking skills are heightened as we attempt to avoid being the one to wear the ‘kick me’ sign for the rest of the day.

Anything that gets people questioning whether something is true or not is a good thing in my view. I just really wish people would exer-cise those critical think-ing muscles every day.

- Thom Barker

Ambivalent April Fool’s Day has

always been one of those peculiarities of our amal-gamated culture which has confused me.

Perhaps that is sim-ply because I have little interest in expending any amount of energy of devising, and then deliv-ering, an April Fool’s Day joke.

So when compatriot Cheap Seater Thom

broached the question is having a day of pranks and practical jokes bene-ficial or detrimental to society I was ambivalent at best.

I will say, I think the day held greater import in the minds of the gen-eral public when I was a youth.

It may be that the day is another example of something the Internet has killed. With hands-on access to the knowledge of the ‘Net, a joke gets harder to pull off.

The day does have a history, a rather long one in fact. The custom of setting aside a day for the playing of harmless pranks upon one’s neigh-bour is recognized every-where. Some precur-sors of April Fools’ Day include the Roman fes-tival of Hilaria, the Holi

festival of India, and the Medieval Feast of Fools, so the current day’s roots grow deep.

And over my years there have been a couple of pranks I recall.

The local newspaper in Tisdale pulled one year’s back, managing to dodge in a blurry UFO in a photo of the local water tower, and running it on the front page.

I also recall a local comic artist posting on Facebook just a few years back that he had gotten a gig with Marvel. I was a keystroke away for fall-ing for it, until I remem-bered it was April 1.

But back to the core question.

I rather doubt the benefits of the day, although good-natured fun can build friend-ships, and community I

suppose.As for a detriment,

well that can be an issue I suppose if a practical joke goes too far. It’s a fine line at times between funny and cruel, and very a matter of individual perspective.

I suspect in the end the day comes and goes for most of us with lit-tle attention paid to the prank aspect, and for those that do partake, as long as done with some thought, it should be all in good fun as they say.

- Calvin Daniels

Lighten up folksAh yes, April Fools’

Day.A time of the year

when pranking people is not only accepted, but encouraged.

It’s also a time of the year that I really enjoyed when I was younger because it was the only time of the year when carrying out a plan of comedic justice on unsuspecting friends that may have wronged you over the year (such as stealing your choco-late pudding) was seen as acceptable.

Recently, however, the entire ‘holiday’ has come

under fire. Many people now feel as if a day for pranking is a day thatmakes bullying legal. I like to call those types ofpeople soft.

Pranking is not bully-ing. At least, not if it’sdone properly.

Sure, the lazy ‘prank-ster’ will just push some-one in mud and yell“April Fools!” all the while laughing maniac-ally at their ‘hilarious’ practical joke that took them all of .5 seconds tothink of (and is thought up when the prankstersees the victim walking past a mud puddle).

A true prankster, how-ever, will not do some-thing by the seat of theirpants. Instead, they’llplan for weeks, maybe even months, the perfect prank that will solidifythem as their school orworkplace’s top rankedBart Simpson; an hon-our that should been rewarded with a trophy and crown and not, as hasbecome all too common as of late, with scorn andpunishment.

After all, a prank is just that: a prank. Not abuse or bullying. Lighten up.

The government is taking decisive action through the new Procurement Transformation Action Plan to ensure there is an open, fair and transpar-ent bidding environment for Saskatchewan busi-nesses, and that taxpay-

ers receive best value.

“Our government is committed to ensur-ing Saskatchewan busi-nesses are treated fairly, respectfully, and consist-ently,” Minister respon-sible for SaskBuilds Gordon Wyant said. “We are taking immediate

action to ensure there is a level playing field for local businesses and to ensure contracting is strategic so taxpayers get the best possible value.”

The action plan’s initiatives are based on input from more than 140 Saskatchewan business-es, associations, muni-cipalities, colleges and universities, and other government partners.

“The plan looks at procurement from all angles,” Wyant said.

“Everything was on the table from simplify-ing documentation and language, to awarding contracts on best value versus lowest cost, and ensuring we use all avail-able room in the trade agreements to benefit Saskatchewan business-es.”

“This is a bold plan based on Canadian best practices,” Saskatoon Meewasin MLA and Legislative Secretary for Priority Saskatchewan Roger Parent said.

“Priority Saskatchewan will lead the implemen-tation of the plan and will continue to consult with Saskatchewan busi-nesses and our broader government partners.”
