B9 Yorkton This Week | www.YorktonThisWeek.com | Wednesday, July 29, 2015 175 York Road W., Yorkton Phone 306-783-8516 MASSIVE CLEARANCE ON NOW AT MACCOLL - Sandra Jean MacColl - facilitator, foodie, artist, actor, teacher, traveller, mentor and muse - died on July 17, 2015, 72 years and 10 days after she was born to Hugh and Mary MacColl, in Canora, SK. In that short span of time, Sandra had a positive effect on countless people. A Junior High teacher of English, French and Art for 37 years (a feat deserving of a medal all in itself!), she is often remembered by former students as a favourite. She was a traveller. As a teacher, she took time to work in the exotic borough of Bengough, SK, the tangy town of Mayo, Yukon and near the wee bonnie brooks of Stirling, Scotland. As an explorer, she visited many locales including Scotland, England, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Gibraltar, Germany, Holland, Cypress and Wales. After a year teaching in Bengough, she decided she needed to calm down a little from the excitement there and went off to make love, not war, in the beatnik scene of Toronto. She worked at the Riverboat Coffeehouse in Yorkville and met, and rubbed shoulders with, the likes of Ian and Sylvia Tyson, Jesse Collin Young from the Youngbloods, Zal Yanovsky from the Lovin’ Spoonful, Gordon Lightfoot and Bob Dylan. After some time away, she returned to teach in the Yorkton area and became one of the world’s great environmentalists and record-keeper. Nothing was wasted, little thrown away. Everything had the potential for a second life. Minutes from every meeting ever attended, … ideas, thoughts, suggestions and “ah ha” moments written on envelopes, napkins, notepads, scraps of paper and calendars, … beads, baubles, paint and pictures - all were saved and stored because Sandra knew that someday, somewhere, SOMEONE was going to need that exact item! Sandra Jean was a woman of many talents who dabbled in many areas and excelled in most. At various times throughout her life, she was an actor, director, and artist. She was a potter, a photographer and a gardener. She knitted, crocheted and sewed and was a lover and collector of antiques and items of beauty. She loved to read and loved to cook. Sandra delighted in taking a great recipe and making it better (to which salivating friends and families can attest). No matter what she did, she did it with style and flair and passion - always giving it 150 percent. Family, friends, her church, her cats, the arts - all were great loves of Sandra and because of the type of person she was, she was loved back by all. She won awards right from elementary school through high school, university and beyond - a CGIT trip to Stratford, scholarships and honours at school, the Zone 4 Recognition for Arts (1992), the SSEA Provincial Volunteer Recognition Award (1992) and, just this winter, a nomination by her good friends and strong supporters for the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal. Solely, or co-creatively with other inspirational minds, Sandra was in one way, shape or form, responsible for or at least a large part of many initiatives. A partial list of these would include the following: ART for YOUth, Sask Culture Board of Directors, Yorkton Public Library Board, pARTners gallery, SSEA Provincial & Local Board member, Executive positions with Yorkton Arts Council, Instrumental in establishing the Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre in Yorkton, Co- founder of Sunflower (arts and craft exhibition running over 35 years.), Cultural co-chair Saskatchewan 2000 Summer Games, ARTARAMA, Organized the Antique Family Treasures Road Show, Three Wisewomen show and sale of artistic Christmas gifts, Renaissance Yorkton, Church volunteering, Sandra’s Verandah - with her love and knowledge of antiques, Sandra started her own antique and collectibles business. Sandra was predeceased by her mother and father, Mary (Strilioff) and Hugh MacColl, sisters, Alicia Lomas and Lauralee Nogue, brothers-in-law, Richard Lomas and Mitch Palmer and niece, Shelley (Hall) Melnychuk. She leaves behind to mourn, but celebrate her life, her sisters, Joan Hall and Sharon Palmer, her brother, Robin MacColl and many nieces and nephews: Susan, Karen, Debbie, Cheryl, John, James, Shawn, Scott, Ryan, Michael, Jeffrey, Sharalee, Sandie Ann, Nisha and Kate. She also had great and great-great nieces and nephews, too numerous to list, but not forgotten. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, July 25, 2015, from St. Andrew’s United Church in Yorkton with Rev. Jen Dresser officiating. The organist, Shani Apland with members of the church choir led the congregation in the singing of the hymns ‘This Is God’s Wondrous World’ and ‘We Shall Go Out’ . Sharalee Chwaliszewski sang a solo ‘It’s A Wonderful World’ . Tributes and words of remembrance were given by Tami Hall, Debbie Maskus, Susan Flett, Merle Sherwin and Shirley Huziak. Vivian Mason read the 23 Psalm. Piper, Ferne Katzberg played the recessional ‘Skye Boat Song’ and at the graveside played ‘Amazing Grace’ . Interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery. Andre Nogue gave a tribute prayer at the graveside. The urn bearers were Sandra’s sisters, Sharon Palmer and Joan Hall and Sandra’s brother, Robin MacColl. Memorials in memory of Sandra may be made towards the Guardian Angel Animal Rescue Yorkton. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome .com. Vichnaya Pamyat! Eternal Memory! MACDONALD - Lord Willing and the creek don’t rise… John (Jack) MacDonald would be there with a warm smile, helpful hand, a giving heart and always something inter- esting to talk about. It saddens us to share the news that John Donald MacDonald (given name) passed away at his home in the early hours of June 25, 2015. Proud to be born in Yorkton, SK he carried through his life deep roots and strong connections to friends and family from his growing years. He set out West to work as a Tele- graph operator for the Railroad on Vancouver Island working for many years in the Duncan/ Ladysmith area. The demand for operators decreased and he went to work for the WCB Communications department in Vancouver. Upon Retiring he moved to Nanaimo, where he set about creating an amazing social network. Long time member of the Brechin United Church he volunteered his time and talents to committees and the loaves & fishes food bank. He was known in the boater’s community on the waterfront, Newcastle Channel, owning a sailboat, and had some great adventures, setting out on trips to meet up with friends he had made into his own family. Jack was an avid clock collector of all eras, which put extra heartbeats in his home. He played golf, and to this day had clubs in his car at the ready. A supporter of local artists, the Museum, CBC Radio all fed into his plethora of local and world history… and filled the remaining walls of his home with paintings. He boasted a wonderful trip to Paris a few years back just before his health started to slow him down. It was a blessing that he had reached 80 years of age, we would have loved to share with him more. Jack was predeceased by his only sister Margaret (Ruth) Kuch and her husband Ed Kuch, and leaves behind his Nephew John and his partner Deborah Kruks of Port Alberni; Niece Andrea Kuch of Toronto; and Niece Louise McKean and her Husband Kent of Winnipeg. All of whom were as dear to him as they were his own. The remaining cousins, relatives and close friends will also find an empty space where there once was a fine caring man who filled their lives with love and friendship. A service/celebration of life will be held in honor of John (Jack) MacDonald at the Brechin United Church in the Fall. There will be a brief announcement in the local paper but if you wish to be contacted when the date is set, please call 250-754-3106 or email [email protected] and leave your name with Joan or Fernando Costa. It saddens us to share the news that John Donald MacDonald (given name) passed away at his home in the early hours of June 25, 2015. Proud to be born in Yorkton, SK he carried through his life deep roots and strong connections to friends and family from his growing years. He set out West to work as a Tele- graph operator for the Railroad on Vancouver Island working for many years in the Duncan/Ladysmith area. The demand for operators decreased and he went to work for the WCB Communications department in Vancouver. Upon Retiring he moved to Nanaimo, where he set about creating an amazing social network. Long time member of the Brechin United Church he volunteered his time and talents to committees and the

loaves & fishes food bank.

GILLIS - Mrs. Rose Gillis, beloved wife of the late Alex Gillis, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Yorkton District Nursing Home, at the age of 93 years. Rose was born on April 5, 1922 on the family farm in the Jedburgh district. She was the youngest of eight children born to John and Apolina (nee Paulust) Tataryn. She received her education at Nanton School and in 1946 she left for Toronto in search of employment. There she found employment with Regal Stationery, where she worked as a supervisor for 15 years. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Alex in 1947. They were married on July 15, 1956 and continued to live in Toronto until their retire- ment. In 1982 they moved to Yorkton to be closer to family and also for health reasons, due to Rose’s asthma and allergies. After moving to Yorkton, they spent many happy hours playing cards with friends, fishing and enjoyed taking scenic drives out in the country. Alex also

enjoyed tending to his yard and garden, in which he took great pride. They were faithful members of Christ the King Roman Catholic Church in Toronto and also St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton. Rose was a member of CWL and spent many happy hours helping at the hall for various functions. She made many friends over the years and always lent a helping hand without hesitation. One of her proudest and greatest accomplishments was learning how to drive after Alex’s passing. This gave her freedom and independence to come and go as she pleased. Rose was predeceased by her parents, John and Apolina Tataryn, her husband Alex on October 27, 1991, her sister Ann Kowalyk (1991), her brother Pete Tataryn (1998), her sister Josephine Spilchak (1999) and her sister Sophie Chupa (2003) and Mary Zahayko (2011). She leaves to mourn her passing and to celebrate her life, her sisters Kay Dobko and Eva Signarowski, also numerous nieces, nephews, neighbours and many good friends. Prayers were held on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 and the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Francis Hengen as the Celebrant. The pianist, Lorraine Lysak led members of St. Gerard’s choir and the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Amazing Grace”, “Isaiah 49”, “On Eagles Wings” Psalm 23, “Song of Angels” and “Song of Farewell”. The reader was Diane Olech and the cross bearer was Debbie Hayward. Members of the CWL participated in an honour guard. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Luke at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Roman Spilchak, Barry Signarowski, Lonnie Chupa, Clarence Schmidt, Arnold Signarowski and Orest Machusek serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Rose may be made to St. Gerard’s Church Memorial Fund. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

HAACKE - Mrs. Doris Haacke, long time resident of Yorkton, passed away on Thursday, the 16 of July. Born in 1921, Doris grew up on the original family farm near Beaverdale, SK. As a young woman she enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Winnipeg where she trained and worked as a stenographer and bookkeeper. After the war, Doris met and married William Haacke, a rural Saskatchewan school teacher. They raised their young family while living at Silver Willow School and later at Crossroads School. In 1962, the family moved into Yorkton where Doris embarked on a long career as office manager at the Northeastern Seed Company. This position suited her well as it enabled her to work with friends both new and old. Being a people person, Doris enjoyed her association over the years with the Legion at Springside, the Threshermen Festival and various square dance and Senior’s groups. When not busy

with these various groups or offering up her time volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Society, Doris loved to garden. The only thing she enjoyed more than the gardening itself was sharing the fruits of her labours with friends and family. Fortunately, she was able to enjoy this passion up until the time she took up residence at the Bentley Retirement Home in 2009 and later in Aspen Bluffs Villa. Doris was a good friend to all who knew her, but especially to those who referred to her affectionately as Gramma Doris. She had a way of convincing each one of them that they were her favourite. Even in her final days, as the world around her was becoming less, she always had a huge smile for her great-grandsons. One can leave no greater legacy than that. Left to mourn her passing are her son, Robert (Margaret Stecyk) Haacke of Yorkton, grandson Geoffrey (Kathy) Haacke with great-grandsons David and Micah of Cold Lake, AB as well as Christopher Haacke of Yorkton. Her daughter Bernie (Robert) Moore of Nelson, BC, granddaughter Leya Moore of Regina and grandson Evan (Jennifer Buell) Moore of North Bay, ON. Her youngest son Kelvin (Bernita) Haacke of Calgary, granddaughter Jenaya Haacke and grandson, Ryan Haacke. Also left with fond memories are her nieces as well as her extended family of grandchildren, Brian Haacke, Colin Anderson, Graham Anderson, Glen Clouston, Gail (Clouston) Clow and their families. Doris was predeceased by her husband William Haacke and her later-in-life companion, John Lambe. She was also predeceased by her daughter-in- law, Donna Mae (Stroshein) Haacke, her brothers Walter (Edna) Foulds, Arthur Foulds and Harold Foulds as well as a sister Muriel who died in infancy. Gone before her are her step-son Warren Haacke and step-daughters Shirley (Haacke) (Anderson) Winder and Joyce (Haacke) Clouston as well as step-grandson David Anderson. Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Jen Dresser of St. Andrew’s United Church officiating. The organist, Ruth McPhee led in the singing of the hymns, “Amazing Grace” and “In The Garden”. A eulogy was presented by Robert Moore and special memories were shared by the grandchildren. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Mark at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Geoff and Kathy Haacke, Chris Haacke, Leya Moore, Evan Moore and Jennifer Buell and Ryan Haacke and Jenaya Haacke serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Doris may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or a Charity of Choice. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

July 26, 1950 - July 31, 2012God saw you getting tiredAnd a cure was not to be

So he put His arms around youAnd whispered “Come to me.”

With tearful eyes we watched youAs you slowly slipped away

And though we loved you dearlyWe could not make you stay.Your golden heart stopped

beatingYour tired hands put to rest

It’s lonesome here without youWe miss you more each dayLife doesn’t seem the sameSince you have gone away.

When days are sad and lonelyAnd everything goes wrong

We seem to hear you whisper“Cheer Up and Carry On”.

Each time we see your pictureYou seem to smile and say,

“Don’t cry. I’m in God’s handsWe’ll meet again someday”.

KYBA - Mr. Stan Kyba of Yorkton entered eternal life on July 19, 2015. Born in Dneiper (Rhein District), SK to Anthony and Stephania (Yurkiw) Kyba, Stanislaus Gabriel Kyba was baptized at the Church of the Holy Transfiguration in Dneiper, SK. Stan is survived by son Kevin Sutton and granddaughter Erica Miller. He was the oldest of six surviving children, Father Boris, Nestor, Joanna, Paul and Cornelia. He was predeceased by his wife Eileen Sutton, parents Anthony & Stephania and a sister Marie in infancy. Stan attended Cedric School #2342 in the Dneiper district, then took his high school education in Yorkton at St. Joseph’s College. Owing to his early family life, Stan faithfully attended church services wherever he lived. He was an upstanding example to those who knew him well or even as an occasional acquaintance. His service to the church by tending to the needs of many on behalf of the church is an outstanding illustration to others of the spirit of the Gospels.

Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law in 1959, he moved to Melville and began practicing law with Peter Dielschneider. In 1961 he moved to Rosetown and later to Canora. Stan served as the Secretary/Treasurer for the St. Henry’s Roman Catholic School District in Melville as well as the Rosetown Separate School Board. Stan was initiated in the First, Second and Third Degrees of the Knights of Columbus in 1959 and in the Fourth Degree in 1961. He transferred to Yorkton in 1964 becoming the Grand Knight of the Fr. Delaere Council from 1966-1967. Stan joined the St. Volodymyr Branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada in 1969. During the 1960’s, the Government of Canada launched a coast-to-coast discus- sion of multiculturalism. Stan helped prepare a brief on the subject from the point of view of the Ukrainian community. In that time (1963) Stan commenced practicing law in Yorkton, taking over the practice of Mr. Justice A.M. Kindred. In the latter part of the decade, he joined the Yorkton Rotary Club. From 1965 to 1973 Stan served on the Yorkton Ukrainian Catholic and Roman Catholic School Board. He donated a great deal of his time giving legal advice and services to the Christian Brothers’ private Catholic high school, St. Joseph’s College. As well, he was instrumental in reaching an accord with Yorkton Collegiate Board for the provision of wages for the Christian Brothers and Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate. In Manitoba, he served as Chair of the Board of Regents for St. Vladimir’s College in Roblin, MB. Stan was joined happily in marriage to Eileen Sutton on August 21, 1974. She died only 12 short years later. From 1983-1988 Stan was a member of the St. Mary’s Parish Ukrainian Catholic Cultural Centre Board. He served the parish of St. Mary’s and the Yorkton Redemptorists in very substantial ways by helping reduce unfair taxes levied upon the Centre. He also contributed to those savings by donating numerous years of legal advice and work. Stan served as Chair for the Saskatoon Eparchial Central Committee from 1992 to 1994. A great sense of stability and hope in church organizations was given to the faithful because of his leadership. As a result, meetings were notably well attended. Stan selflessly served as a member of other organizations and the parish of St. Mary’s in various other capacities, including St. Joseph’s College Reunion Committee (1997-2000); Chair of the Building committee for St. Mary’s Parish; Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate 100 Anniversary. Stan’s dedication in bringing Christian values to civil institutions includes Liberal Candidate for MLA of Canora Constituency (1971); Liberal Candidate for MP - Yorkton-Melville Constituency (1974); Alderman for the city of Yorkton (1982-1985, 1988-1994). A Prayer Service was held on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. The Holy Rosary led by Knights of Columbus, Father Delaere Council, Brother Stanislaus Assembly & Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood preceded the prayers. The Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church with Most Rev. Bishop Bryan Bayda, C.Ss.R., Very Rev. Boris Kyba, C.Ss.R. and Confreres as Concelebrants. The responses were led by Colette Karapita & and Parish Choir Members. The cross bearer was Brielle Kitchen and the epistle reader was Paul Kyba. Participating in an honour guard were members of Knight of Columbus, 3rd & 4th Degrees and Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with the casket bearers representing Stan’s various walks of life; Ron Balacko and Wayne Rusnak, legal profession, Matt Bernat, City of Yorkton, Dennis Magnussen, Yorkton Union Hospital/friend, Ed Magus, friend/bridge partner and Peter Kobylka, St. Mary’s Parish. A spe- cial thank you to the health care staff, particularly those that attended to Stan on a daily basis. Your patience, kindness and genuine concern for Stan was greatly appreciated. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Stan to the Parkinson’s Society, St. Mary’s Church Building Fund or Mass Offerings. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

PLAN NUMBER 7-4-955CHARMING TWO-

STOREY HOMEThis two-storey, four-

bedroom home not only exudes plenty of charm, it contains all the ameni-ties that today’s modern families expect.

The front door, tucked under a covered porch to one side of the house, is embellished with mul-lioned side lights. To the left of the compact foyer is a den, featuring French doors that open onto a covered porch bor-dered by a painted rail-ing that adds elegance to the facade.

Just beyond the den, a coat cupboard and pow-der room are situated for easy use by both family and visitors.

Ahead, past an L-shaped flight of stairs on the right, is the spa-cious great room, where a gas fireplace will warm this room as well as the open-plan dining room and kitchen.

Natural light will flood into both the dining room and the great room through large windows. Near the windows, a nar-row part of both rooms is open to the floor above. These rooms also enjoy access to a terrace over-looking the back garden, an ideal spot for summer-time meals and relax-ation.

The kitchen is sepa-rated from the other two rooms by an angled counter that conceals the dishwasher. A window over the sink will pro-vide a garden view for the cook, and a large pan-try guarantees always-welcome storage space.

The laundry room, situated a few short steps from the kitchen, has access to the double garage, easing the task of carrying the groceries from the car. A coat cup-board is nearby.

Upstairs, the master bedroom is situated at the back of the home for privacy. A large walk-in closet will provide enough space for even the most clothes-con-scious couple. The cor-ner windows will let light into the en-suite, which includes a soaker tub and a shower stall.

The second, third and fourth bedrooms each contain one special fea-ture — a built-in desk in one, a window seat in another and a walk-in closet in yet another. These bedrooms share a three-piece bathroom. A linen closet is conve-niently placed nearby.

Exterior finishes include shingled gables, horizontal siding, pilas-ters with brick bases, painted trim and decora-tive woodwork. Second-

storey windows are part-ly mullioned.

This home measures 40 feet wide and 52 feet, six inches deep, for a total of 2,173 square feet. Plans for an unfinished basement are included.

Plans for design 7-4-955 are available for $795 (set of 5), $900(set of 8) and $1095 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 out-side of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges.

Our NEW 47TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is avail-able for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and han-dling). Make all cheque and money orders pay-able to “JENISH HOUSE DESIGN LTD” and mail to:

Should the axe be falling?

Driving tips for safe summer fun

Benefits of cannibalism?

View from the Cheap Seats is kind of an exten-sion of the newsroom. Whenever our three regular reporters, Calvin Daniels, Thom Barker and Randy Brenzen are in the build-ing together, it is frequent-ly a site of heated debate. This week: Should Corey Chamblin be fired?

On probationI am not quite at the

point of firing Corey Chamblin yet, but if I was running the Roughriders right now, he would be on probation.

Let’s look at the sta-tistics, shall we? Total offence per game: 478.8 yards, first in league. Passing yards: 332, first in league. Rushing yards: 146.8, first in league. Points for: 143, first in league.

As they say, however, there is only one statistic in any sport that matters and after five games the Riders have zero wins.

Why? Because our defence sucks, period. And who is our defen-sive coordinator? Corey Chamblin.

When Chamblin first came to Regina, I instantly became a big fan because he was a disciplinarian. It takes discipline to be a great football team and he didn’t put up stupid pen-alties or sloppy play. If you took a dumb penalty, you were on the bench. If you missed a makeable tackle, on the bench. Drop the ball, bench.

He turned us into the least penalized team in the league and in his second year, we won the Grey Cup.

There are those who would give Chamblin excuses. Wah, I lost my starting QB. Wah, I lost two games in overtime. Wah, I lost my backup quarterback.

None of these wash. Glenn stepped in and is currently the top ranked quarterback in the league. Those games never would have gone to overtime if our defence played even halfway decently instead of suck-ing totally.

In the game against Hamilton Sunday, I had never seen such sloppy tackling. Again, players on the defensive side of the ball took ridiculous penalties that hurt us.

When it became obvious we were going to lose, the camera turned to Brendan Taman and one of the announcers said something about him looking for players.

No!Hire a damn defen-

sive coordinator before we start hollering for Chamblin’s head on a platter.

Close callThe axe is being

sharpened in Riderville and fans wonder when it will fall to chop coach

Corey Chamblin as head of the Saskatchewan Roughriders?

More than a few would suggest the axe should have fallen Monday after the ‘Riders dropped to 0-and-5 on the young Canadian Football League season.

Certainly the start is not one fans expected. It leaves the team as the only winless franchise in the otherwise very competitive league this season. Only two points separate the remaining eight teams.

The sad thing about the lousy start is that it should have been better.

The Roughriders have scored more points than only one team this season, 24 more in fact, which is enough to nearly win a game itself.

As a result Saskatchewan has been in every game. They lost by four to Winnipeg in week one, after losing starting pivot Darian Durant.

Week two it was a two point loss to the Argonauts in OT.

Next was a three-point loss to B.C., again in extra time, followed in week four by another three-point loss to the Leos.

The worst loss of the

season coming Sunday as Hamilton outscored the team by 10, a game in which Kevin Glenn was lost late, forcing the ‘Riders to their third QB, never a recipe to win.

It’s hard to fire a coach based on two OT losses, and two other losses los-ing the starting pivot to injury.

But there is a problem in Riderville.

The issue is the 165 points allowed, and that falls to the defence.

Chamblin said good-bye to Richie Hall as defensive co-ordinator after last season, and the ‘D’ has suffered since.

The ‘D-line’ has not generated much pres-sure. They are tied with the lowest sack total in the league at five.

They have tackled poorly as a team, allowing a league-worst 137.8 yards against in the ground this season.

They have managed only two defensive turn-overs this season.

While Chamblin might get a pass on keeping things close, with enough ‘could have wins’ to save his job, he has to take the blame for a defence that is not getting it done at all.

Reasonably, Chamblin likely has the next two weeks against an Eskimo team that sits tied atop the CFL West but with its own quarterback ques-tions to get the Roughies back on track. If he doesn’t get at least a split, he should be seeking a job elsewhere.

Off with his headWhen asked if Corey

Chamblin should be axed after the Riders’ 0-5 start, my answer, quite simply, was yes.

I mean, if you or I had such a horrible perform-ance at our respective jobs then we’d surely be fired quicker than Hulk Hogan after a racist rant.

So why does Chamblin still have his job?

The only reason that Corey Chamblin is still the head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders is because he coached the team to the 2013 Grey Cup.

If not for that, he’d be the assistant coach at Grambling State or some NCAA Division III school in Oklahoma (or worse, the Colchester Gladiators).

In reality the 2013 sea-son was a fluke. The team finished 11-7; a decent record to be sure, but nothing impeccable.

The season before that, Chamblin led the Riders to a below .500 record at 8-10 and then last year took them to a 10-8 record.

Now they’re 0-5 and the defence – which was supposed to be one of the strengths – is their biggest weakness, all because of Mr. Chamblin.

So yes, he should most definitely be wished well in his future endeavors.

With that being said, I really hope he stays.

After all, I’m an Edmonton Eskimos fan and having Chamblin at the reigns of the Riders is nothing but wonderful for me!

VIEW FROM THECHEAP SEATS

The August long week-end is fast approaching which means an increase of traffic on our high-ways. Trailers, boats, and motorhomes con-tinue to be a common sight. “It’s important for motorists to remain focused, drive respon-sibly and with a positive attitude,” said Christine Niemczyk, Director of Communications, CAA Saskatchewan. “Let’s also remember to not text while driving and con-sider appointing a pas-senger to handle phones and navigation systems,” she added. Summer also means road construction season so motorists are reminded to slow down to 60 km per hour when passing highway con-struction zones, emer-gency vehicles, and tow truck operators assisting motorists.

Here are few more safe driving tips from CAA Saskatchewan:

Drivers:

•Get plenty of rest before you head out for your long drive.

•Plan your route to allow time to travel safe-ly and check for road con-struction to avoid delays.

•Do not drink and drive.

•Pack an emergency vehicle kit (flashlight, booster cables, tire punc-ture sealant, first-aid kit, flares, drinking water, cell phone with batter-ies and charger for emer-gency calls, etc.).

•Ensure all vehicle passengers wear seat belts and that child car seats and booster seats are in working condition.

•Eliminate distrac-tions and remember all Canadian provinces have banned the use of hand-held communica-tions devices behind the wheel.

Drivers Towing a Trailer:

•Know the towing cap-acity of your vehicle. This information can be found in the vehicle owner’s manual. Also review the owner’s manual for the trailer to determine the weight of the trailer. Make sure the weight of the trailer does not

exceed the towing cap-acity of the tow vehicle. Never overestimate this capacity because a load that is too heavy could damage certain parts of the towing vehicle and pose a serious risk to the safety of other road users.

•Take into account the extra size and weight of the trailer when driv-ing. Be extra cautious when changing lanes, accelerating or making turns, and especially when slowing down since the load being pulled will greatly affect the vehicle’s performance and could significantly increase the distance required to stop in case of an emergency.

•Motorists should also ensure that the trailer is securely attached to the vehicle and be sure to check this regularly throughout the trip. Check to make sure the trailer ball is tight and use safety chains. Since backing up with a trailer or camper is more dif-ficult, it is best to be prepared in case there is a need to do this. If the driver is unsure whether he or she will

be able to reverse safely with a trailer, it is rec-ommended that they practice in a quiet area – ideally far from all traffic – before starting a trip.

Trailer and Motorhome Care:

•Inspect and or grease wheel bearings and leaf spring assemblies. CAA Saskatchewan receives a large number of roadside assistance requests for motorhomes and trailers that have wheel bearing problems, broken leaf spring on their trailer suspension and tire problems. Seized wheel bearings and broken leaf springs make it very dif-ficult to tow the trailer long distances.

•Check the tires on your trailer and motor-home as they tend to be parked for extended periods which causes deterioration from age, UV rays and weather elements. Tires that are old or have cracks and bulges in them should be inspected further and perhaps replaced.

•Also check the wheel bearings/wheel lug nut and all fluid levels before heading out on a trip.

•Make sure the wheel

lug nuts are torqued to specifications. CAA does service a large number of roadside assistance calls for motorhomes and trailers that have lost the tire and wheel assem-blies while driving on the highway because the lug nuts became loose which can be very dangerous for everyone on the road.

•Motorhomes should be inspected every year to see if there are any mechanical problems prior to any trips. Coolant hoses and broken fan belts are common prob-lems with these types of RVs.

Vehicle Care:•Check your vehicle’s

tire pressure (includ-ing the spare) and fluid levels (motor oil, brake fluid, windshield washer fluid).

•Take advantage of the qualified staff at the CAA Car Care Centres or Approved Auto Repair Service (AARS) facili-ties to have your vehicle inspected in advance of your road trip.

•Remember CAA Roadside Assistance is available 24 hours day in Canada and the United States.

LEAD STORY — What Cannibals Can Teach Us

Researchers studying the human-brain-eating Fore tribe of Papua New Guinea reported in a June journal article that they have identified the specific “prion” resist-ance gene that appears to offer complete protec-tion against mad cow dis-ease and perhaps other neurodegenerative con-ditions such as demen-tias and Parkinson’s. The tribe customarily dined on relatives’ brains at funerals (although has abandoned the prac-tice) and consequently suffered a major 1950s epidemic that wiped out

two per cent of the tribe annually. According to the lead researcher, sur-vivors, with the specific resistance gene, dem-onstrated “a striking example of Darwinian evolution in humans.”

Recurring Themes (All-New Episodes!)

— Spouses often dis-agree politically and vote accordingly, but occasionally one runs for office against the other — as is the case in Bremerton, Washington,

where incumbent Council member Roy Runyon is being chal-lenged by his wife, Kim Faulkner. Both were mum as to reasons and in fact filed their regis-tration papers together at the same time in May. Said Runyon: “We’re different people. She might have a different approach.”

— India’s media reported in April yet another birth defect in which the surviving

baby is treated as a rep-resentation of Hindu holiness. A four-armed, four-legged child (medic-al explanation: remains of an underdeveloped conjoined twin) is wor-shipped as the reincar-nation of the multi-limbed Lord Ganesha, and pilgrims journey from all over India to the birthplace, Dumri-Isri in Jharkhand state.

In a nod to modern-ity, one witness told a reporter that initially he had thought a photo-graph of the child was photoshopped, but now has seen the baby with his own eyes.
