KYBA - Mr. Nestor Kyba of Yorkton, formerly of the Dneiper district, entered eternal life on the afternoon of May 29, 2016. He was 80 years of age. Nestor John Kyba was born on October 3, 1935 in Canora, to Anthony and Stephania (Yurkiw) Kyba. He was the second oldest of 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Together with his parents and siblings, Nestor grew up on the Kyba family homestead East of Dneiper. Nestor received his elementary education at Cedric School in the Dneiper district and then went on to graduate from St Joseph’s College in Yorkton in 1954. Upon completion of high school, Nestor started farming with his parents. On August 1, 1964, Nestor married the love of his life, Jean Ostafie at the Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church at Dneiper. Together they took over and made their home on the family farm. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Debbie in 1966 and David in 1968. Nestor and Jean

operated the family farm together, sharing many of the duties. When har- vest came, Nestor would operate the combine and Jean would haul the grain, and as the years went on, and they got another combine, Nestor took over the grain hauling and Jean operated one of the combines. In the winter when Nestor wasn’t busy pushing snow, he kept busy in the house helping with the cooking and washing dishes while Jean was busy sewing. Nestor and Jean remained on the farm until 2006, when due to health reasons, they moved to Yorkton. Nestor continued to rent out the land and maintain the farm yard until the farm was sold. Nestor was a true member of his faith. He was an active member of the Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church at Dneiper, serving as an executive member of the church and hall committees and singing in the choir. There were many great memories made, cutting the grass on the cemetery and church grounds and preparing for and enjoying the many New Year’s and Pre-Lenten dances. When church services became less frequent at Dneiper, Nestor and Jean became members of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. In the last few years, Nestor once again, joined and enjoyed being a part of the church choir. In May, 1966, Nestor joined the newly established Father Decorby Council of the Knights of Columbus in Canora and was elected to the executive as the warden. Since that time, he served on the executive in many capacities including District Deputy. In 1992, Nestor and Jean enjoyed a trip to New York where Nestor was the Delegate for Saskatchewan at a Knights of Columbus function. Nestor was recently recognized as one of remaining charter members of the Fr. Decorby council. When Nestor and Jean moved to Yorkton, Nestor joined the Father Delaere Council of the Knights of Columbus. Nestor was also honoured to become a Fourth Degree Knight with the Brother Stanislaus Assembly in Yorkton. Besides the Church, Nestor also served as a leader of the Dneiper 4-H Club, a member of the Rhein Wheat Pool Committee and a member of the R.M. of Sliding Hills Parks and Recreation Board. Nestor and Jean always enjoyed socializing with friends and family with a cup of coffee or a drink, in the winter a game of cards and in the summer a game of horse shoes. In 1996, Nestor approached a long-awaited milestone of his life, that of a Grandpa. His grandchildren, Brett, Braden and Brielle quickly became the focus of his life, as was he of theirs. Grandpa was always there to support and cheer on his grandchildren in their sports, school concerts and dance recitals and was always available to get them to school and their activities when needed. When Jean became ill in 2004, Nestor stood by her side and assisted her as needed. He was able to bring her home from the hospital in time to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Nestor continued to care for Jean at home until her passing in 2009. Nestor continued to enjoy his grandkids, his church and Knights activities, as well as Yorkton Terrier hockey games, the horse races and coffee row at the mall. On May 14, 2016, Nestor was admitted to the Yorkton Regional Health Centre with health issues that became beyond his ability to fight. Nestor is survived by his children, David and daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Larry Kitchen, his grandchildren Brett, Braden and Brielle Kitchen and his brothers and sisters: Father Boris Kyba, Paul (Lynne) Kyba, Joanna Pidperyhora and Cornelia (Bruce) Kyba-Bobinski. Nestor was predeceased by his wife Jean, his parents Anthony and Stephania, his in-laws Victor and Mary Ostafie, his brother Stan, sister Marie (in infancy), brothers-in- law Ronnie Ostafie and Jim Pidperyhora and sister-in-law Eileen Kyba. Prayers were held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. The Holy Rosary led by members of the Knights of Columbus, Father Delaere Council and Brother Stanislaus Assembly preceded the prayers. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, June 3, 2016 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Most Rev. Bishop Bryan Bayda, C.Ss.R., Very Rev. Boris Kyba, C.Ss.R., Very Rev. Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. and Confreres concelebrating. The Responses were led by Lorne Stechyshyn, Colette Karapita & Parish Choir Members. The cross bearer was Brielle Kitchen and the epistle reader was Cornelia Kyba-Bobinski. The Honour Guard consisted of members of Knight of Columbus, Third and Fourth Degrees. The interment took place in the Yorkton City Cemetery with David Kyba, Brett Kitchen, Braden Kitchen, Larry Kitchen, Leo Lucash and Ed Shalkowsky serving as the casket bearers. Following the reception, a eulogy was presented by David Kyba and Larry Kitchen. Memorials honouring Nestor’s life may be made to St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church or The Health Foundation as gifts of remembrance. BERG - Dylan Mathew Berg passed away on May 30, 2016 at the age of 26. Dylan was born in Yorkton on August 15, 1989, the son of Dianne (nee Blazeiko) and the late Corey Berg. Dylan completed his education in Churchbridge in 2007. Upon completion of high school, he started employment with EMW in Saltcoats where he gained his passion to become an ironworker. Dylan had justcompleted his requirements for his Red Seal Journeyman’s Certificate. His iron working took him all overSaskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. Through his local 771 he made many lasting friendships within the brotherhood. Dylan’s passion has always been theoutdoors. He grew up fishing off the dock at the cabin at Lake of the Prairies and in the boat anywhere there was water, including at the cabin at Burgis Beach. Hunting was a passion that he so enjoyed with his Dad, Grandpas, Uncles and friends. There were many

memories made Elk hunting at Weekes and at the Lak-a-nooki Moose Shack. Quadding, snowmobiling, trapping and scouting were all past times, that when spent with all his family and friends, meant the world to him. Dylan was a very compassionate person. In 2009 after his fatherCorey was diagnosed with cancer, Dylan made a decision to grow his hair and donate it for wigs for those who were in need. Dylan “Rocked his Mullet” and was very, very proud of it! After 4 years of growth, on Decem- ber 11, 2013 Dylan chose to cut off his “rat tail”. He raised approximately $5,500.00 for the Cancer Society which well exceeded his fundraising goal. Dylan played minor and senior hockey in Churchbridge and spent many years playing Rec Hockey. He always looked forward to the annual Imperials Boxing Day Hockey Tournament in Churchbridge. As a true Boston Bruins fan, he was able to see his team play in Edmonton last year. His vast knowledge of hockey recently led him to a potentialopportunity of becoming a hockey scout. In 2006 Dylan followed his parent’s involvement in volunteer fire firefighting and joined as a junior firefighter with Churchbridge Fire and Rescue and has been a member since. Dylan loved to travel. His first trip was in 2008 where he travelled with his Mom, Dad and sister to Arizona to visit his grandparents. In 2009 he traveled to Montreal to watch the UFC fights. In 2010 he travelled to Costa Rica with his Mom and Ashley to spend Christmas together. He loved it so much there that he went back in 2011 with his friends. In 2014 his love of hockey took him to watch the World Juniors in Sweden. In 2015 he travelled to Thailand where he backpacked across the country, had an opportunity to ride an elephant, cuddled a monkey and was able to meet up with his cousin Jeff where they experienced some of the country together. His most recent trip was with a buddy to Arizona to spend New Year’s 2016 with his Grandpa. Dylan loved to go to concerts and there are many that will never forget the song “What was I Thinking?”. That was the song that Dylan made his “brief” debut on stage with Dierks Bentley. There was never a dull moment when Dylan was around. He always had a good comeback, a personality that lit up the room and he could talk to anyone about anything, just like his Dad! Dylan was predeceased by his Dad,Corey in 2010, his Grandma Pat Berg in 2014, his Uncle Kelly Berg in 2006 and his Grandpa Ed Blazeiko in 2003. He leaves to cherish the memories and celebrate his life, his loving Mom, Dianne Berg, his big sister Ashley Berg, Baba Olga Blazeiko, Grandpa Dennis Berg, Uncle Dale and Auntie Kelli Blazeiko (cousins Brianna (Mason) and Brady), Uncle Darren and Auntie Lorraine Blazeiko (cousins Brooke and Jake), Uncle Darren and Auntie Diane Berg (cousins Karissa (Aube) Aubichon and family, Mike (Nicole) Berg and family and Jeff Berg), Auntie Judy and Rick Grocholski (cousins Kaitlyn Berg-Grocholski, Crystal, James and Craig Berg, Amanda(Nate) Ede and family, Uncle Warren Berg (cousins Shayla and Taylor Berg), extended family and many, many friends. Dylan has gone fishing with his Dad. Love and peace! The Requiem Divine Liturgy was sung on Monday, June 6, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton, SK. Father Raymond Lukie, C.Ss.R. was the Celebrant and the responses were led by Laurie Fedorowich. The Cross Bearers were Chad Byczynski and Tanner Burman and the Epistle Read- ers were Brianna Blazeiko and Mike Berg. The Interment Service followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Father Raymond Lukie officiating, Fern Katzberg playing the bagpipes, Dylan’s mother, Dianne Berg and Dylan’s sister, Ashley Berg serving as the Urn Bearers and the Churchbridge Fire & Rescue and Local 771 Ironworkers Brotherhood serving as Honourary Urn Bearers. Friends may make donations in Dylan’s memory to the Churchbridge Arena Board, in support of arena “Chiller” project. MANKISH - Mr. Nick Mankish of Calder entered eternal rest on May 30, 2016 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre at the age of 82 years. Nick was born on October 4, 1933 in the Calder district, a son of Mike and Frances (nee Lesanko) Mankish. He was raised on the family farm and attended Mostetz School near Calder. Nick, along with his brothers George and William took over the family farm and continued to farm until 1970 when they retired but continued to reside on the farm. After the passing of his brothers, Nick moved from the farm into Calder and resided in a Seniors Housing Unit. As a young man, Nick enjoyed playing guitar and played in a local band for many functions and dances in the area. Nick enjoyed baseball and was a pitcher for the Calder ball team. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Calder. Nick was predeceased by his father Mike (1961), mother Frances (1988),

brothers Metro (1935), George (1998), Dan (2002), William (2008), sister Mary (2004) and Victoria (2006). Nick is survived by his sister Helen Bugoy of Theodore Health Centre, nephew Rick (Natalie) Bugoy of Yorkton, sister-in-law Marjory Mankish of Calder and numerous nieces, great-nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky officiating. The responses were led by Yvonne Panchuk and members of Parish Choir. The cross bearer was Walter Balabuk. The interment followed in the Garden of Gethsemane at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Gerald Shymko, Peter Swerhun, Rick Bugoy, Norman Wandy, Arthur Martenuik and Myron Rublitz serving as the casket bearers. Rick Bugoy shared reflections of his uncle’s life and offered words of gratitude to all. Memorials in memory of Nick’s life may be made to St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery Fund. SPITZKE - Joan Spitzke, beloved wife of Harvey, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina due to health complications. She was 79 years and 6 days old. Joan was born on May 20, 1937 at the Yorkton Union Hospital. She was the only daughter born to parents, Otto and Olga Fichtner of Springside, SK. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Springside. Joan had a great work ethic from a young age, helping neighbours with various odd jobs on the farm. When she was 18 she got a job at the telephone office in Springside. It was at this time that she started dating her friend,Harvey Spitzke. She then moved to Prince George, BC and worked as an aid in the hospital. Harvey couldn’t stay away and followed Joan to B.C. They got engaged on Christmas Eve in 1956. The couple moved back to Springside and on July 3, 1957, Joan was united in marriage to her best

friend and the love of her life, Harvey. Six years after they were married, they started their family and were blessed with two daughters and two sons. Joan and Harvey made their home on the farm in the Springside area. They worked side by side to make their farm a success. Joan was an avid curler and truly loved the sport. She also spent many happy hours tending to her garden and flowers. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Otto (1989) and Olga (2011); a sister, Lovina, in infancy and a son, Blaine, in infancy. She leaves to cherish her memory her best friend and loving husband of 58 years, Harvey; her daughter, Lynette Ostafie (Lorelei) and her son, Dylan (Amber) and Dylan’s daughters, McKenzie and Hailey; her daughter, Maureen (Murray) Werner and their children, Denean, Travis (Jennifer and their children, Reagen, Alyssa, Gage and Brody), Caylee (Richard Hiebert and their children, Kaycee and Maddee); Logan (Ian Spearman and their children, Nicole and Devon): her son, Robert and his children, Jaime (and her son, Jaxson), Jordan and Richelle; her son, Verdell (Janet) and his children, Rylie (Lance Tabin) and Colben (Tanna). Joan is also survived by her brothers, Archie (Val) Fichtner and Mervin (Hannie) Fichtner, her brother-in-law, Bill (Eileen) Spitzke and sister-in-law, Anne (Don) Bilokreli, as well as her aunts, uncle and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation Services took place at the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services were held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 from the Springside Baptist Church in Springside, SK with Pastor Richard Kauenhofenofficiating. The organist, Jeanette Kriger and the pianist, Kitty Arndt, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “How Great Thou Art”, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” and “Abide With Me”. A musical tribute, “My Jesus I Love Thee/Until Then” was shared by the Ladies Trio. The Scripture Reading was given by Pastor Mike Anderson and Words of Tribute and Eulogy were shared by Clayton Fichtner. The Interment Service took place in the Springside Town Cemetery with Travis Werner, Dylan Ostafie, Colben Spitzke, Jordon Spitzke, Richard Hiebert and Ian Spearman serving as Casket Bearers. Friends may make donations in Joan’s memory to the Springside Baptist Church Memorial Fund or to STARS Air Ambulance as tokens of remembrance. HILTON - Dorothy Mae Hilton was born on the family farm near Bangor, SK on February 28, 1941 to George and Johanna (Gibson) Hilton. “Dot”, as she was known to family and friends, was the third of the four “Hilton Sisters” and was born the day before her eldest sister’s birthday. Her eldest sister wanted something “gift-wrapped” not a new baby sister as her birthday gift! Dot’s early years were spent at Glyndwr, a one room prairie school where the four sisters would arrive by horse and buggy or sleigh. High school years were spent in Bredenbury and Saltcoats. Growing up on the farm, everyone contributed to the completion of the daily chores. The girls helped with housework and to tend the garden, picked berries, collected eggs from the chickens and milked the cows. They drove the tractor, hauled the hay and made haystacks. In the winter, they enjoyed skiing and snow

shoeing or cleaning off a slough so they could skate. Family and community gatherings including dances and square dancing were an important part of growing up. Each girl had a hobby. Dot was an avid reader and would read anything she could get her hands on including her dad’s farming practice journals/resources. After high school, Dot moved to Saskatoon where she completed a secretarial course and during the summer months worked at “Dog and Suds”. In the early 1960’s, Dot began working for the Canadian Wildlife Services in Saskatoon and in the biology lab at the University of Saskatchewan. Her first marriage to Douglas Sameoto took her to Kingston, ON where she worked at the biology lab at Queen’s University. Dot then moved to Dartmouth and later to Halifax. In Nova Scotia she became fondly known as “Sam”. She obtained her B.A., B.Ed. and M.Ed. from Dalhousie University. Her teaching career in Halifax City spanned more than 30 years at Richmond, Oxford, Charles A. Beckett and Westmount schools. She was so well-loved by her primary students that they would cry when there was no school on the weekends! She was also, for many years, a driver education instructor. She held various positions with the Nova Scotia Teacher’s Union executive and was an active member of the NDP. Volunteering for the jazz festival was something that she enjoyed. Dot loved travelling the world with her many friends and with her partner, Richard Brown but she always loved to return to her family on the prairies. She had a passion for genealogy and spent time researching and communicating with new-found long-lost relatives from around the world. Over the years, she welcomed many university students into her home whom she fondly referred to as her, “Chestnut Babies”. She maintained many life-long friendships. Dorothy was loved by everyone that knew her and was a friend to all. Always taking an interest in others, she gave encouragement with her positive words and inviting smile. She was fond of her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and they adored her. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Dorothy passed away on April 19, 2016 at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, NS. She is survived by her partner, Richard Brown, Halifax, NS; two sisters, Thelma Hilton Wenc, Olds, AB and Florence Hutchings, Saltcoats, SK and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, two great- great-nieces and two great-great-nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Norma Thompson; nephew, Conrad Wenc; her three brothers-in-law and four great-nephews. Donations can be made in her memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Palliative Care Unit, Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, NS. Following Dorothy’s wishes, she was cremated. Celebrations of her life were held on Saturday, June 4, 2016 from 2-6 pm at the University Club, Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS and will be held at the Saltcoats Community Cemetery, Saltcoats, SK on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Sound of poetry wins Founder’s Award

Early on in The Complete Works, Justin Stephenson’s adaptation (of sorts) of the works of Canadian avant garde poet bpNichol, is a read-ing of the sound poem “White Sound.” In a way, it functions as a gateway to the rest of the film. Without question the most abrasive part of the film, the collision of strange noises produced by the reader and the barrage of text and ani-mation effects layered on top could easily push people into abandoning the film all together. But, if they push through, it’s arguably the key that unlocks the whole experiment.

Sound is the most important part of The Complete Works, which won the Founder’s Award at the recent Yorkton Film Festival. The sounds of letters that make up the English lan-guage being an apparent fascination of the poet the film is trying to cap-ture. A later reading has a section on oral fixa-tions, and the work itself frequently descends

into noises without pre-tending to be tethered to words. The film takes this as a chance to play with letters itself, often experimenting with typ-ography, experimenting with how letters are pre-sented, using computer animation, basic projec-tion or just cutting up let-ters and throwing them across the screen on pieces of paper. But what-ever Stephenson does, the visuals are secondary to the sound, and take a music video approach by trying to match what the sound is doing.

The readings are by a selection of bpNichol’s friends, or from archival recordings of the man himself, who appears behind an oscilloscope in a move oddly remin-

iscent of Russ Meyers’ Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill! They give a little glimpse into the man, but not more than a fleet-ing one, the film is more interested in letting the words or even noises explaining who this was and why he was import-ant. The impression you get is of a buzz of energy obsessed with the idea of sound and letters rather than the dull business of the language they are attached to. Which isn’t to say that this is all non-sense, some of the work has a clear narrative – for example, The True Eventual Story of Billy the Kid, presented in several sections through the film and backed with stock footage from an old, public domain Billy

the Kid movie, adjustedto feature the text being read – but it’s clear that the sounds of the wordsthemselves were a big draw to the author, even the more traditional work taking trips intowords that sounds amus-ing together.

It’s only natural thatStephenson would beinterested in bpNichol, given that much of hisother work is the main titles for film and tele-vision, including several recent films by David Cronenberg. His job, then, is to try to capturethe tone of a film throughthe presentation of words and letters, using lan-guage as a gateway tosomething else.

His portrait ofbpNichol suggests another artist doing the same thing, and while that might be the resultof the filmmaker’s own obsessions, it does make sense that one would findthe other. They are both making works out of what letters represent, wheth-er it’s sounds or visualmeaning.

This week: What music-al artist(s) do you consider to be sellouts?

Changin’ timesI couldn’t think of any

egregious cases off the top of my head except maybe Bob Dylan and Cadillac so I decided to peruse some lists on the Internet. What I noticed is a lot of the artists, whom people list as sell-outs can’t really be con-sidered such.

First of all, you have to have had integrity in the first place in order to sell out so bands like the Rolling Stones and KISS don’t count because they were always about the money.

Secondly, selling your name or your brand for commercial gain is not in and of itself constitute selling out. Is there any-thing really wrong, for example, with U2 front-ing for iPod? After all, how many U2 fans were already listening to the band’s music on their iPods?

Finally, there is the ends justifying the means argument, such as Bob Geldof and his infamous razor blade peddling, which he did for African famine relief. It is an age-old question. Does motiv-ation matter?

Personally, my whole attitude toward the concept of selling out changed after Bruce Cockburn, my favourite artist of all time, got flak in 1991 for “selling out” because he signed with a big label (Columbia) and recorded his Nothing But A Burning Light album in the United States using American producer T-Bone Burnett and guest artists such as Jackson Browne.

When pressed by a Canadian interviewer Bruce said something along the lines that he had devoted his life to the Canadian music

industry, but wasn’t get-ting any younger and needed to make some money. Really, could any-one begrudge him that?

Now, if Bruce started schilling for say, the oil industry, that could raise my eyebrow.

I guess I keep coming back to Dylan because he was so counter-cul-ture and considered so authentic. When songs intended to be anthems for social and political change, such as Times They Are A-Changin’, start getting used to promote big banks and insurance companies, you really do have to start questioning an art-ist’s integrity, however.

After all, it was Dylan who once sang: “Advertising signs that con you/Into thinking you’re the one/That can do what’s never been done/That can win what’s never been won.”

Then again, it’s not just times that change, so do people.

IntriguedThe idea of what band

might be a sellout in my mind was intriguing.

I of course recognize many people look at cer-tain artists, in particular musicians, as selling out when they opt for popu-larity over the ‘art’ of their efforts.

It is not something I see as particularly rel-evant in terms of what I listen too.

It’s great to write music for the ‘sake of the music’ whatever that exactly means I suppose, but if it’s only the fly on the window pane, your mother and your best friend who hear it, you have not accomplished much of a ripple in the business.

There are of course bands which create a ‘buzz’ by doing something weird, new, obscure, or strange, which captures the ear of a sort of under-ground crowd.

Suddenly the band achieves some notori-ety, and along comes a

recording exec who sug-gests a few tweaks to takethe sound more main-stream and early listen-ers scream sellout.

Meanwhile the artistrecognizes a few things. A tweak, or two, and they are likely to have more ears listening. That is not generally a bad thing for an artist, to have morepeople following their work.

And while some altru-istic music listeners might not like to hear this, but there is the crassconcept of money. Toiling in obscurity and living inthe parent’s basement, practising in a garage, driving a beat up 1990 van to gigs where after the bar bill you have to takeup a collection for gas home may have certain legendary charm, a sev-en-figure bank accountis not to be sneezed at either.

If a musician opts forpopularity and moneyI cannot argue with the choice, nor do I resent the decision.

You can always ‘net search for the next bandnobody has heard of to feel good about your lis-tening choices if that isimportant.

In my case GarthBrooks, KISS, Bon Jovi and dozens more are justfine thanks.
