B7 Yorkton This Week | www.YorktonThisWeek.com | Wednesday, January 6, 2016 175 York Road W., Yorkton Phone 306-783-8516 MASSIVE CLEARANCE ON NOW AT PROPP - Elsie (nee Weinbender) Propp was born on the farm west of Canora, SK on July 28, 1928, the seventh child of George and Maria (nee Braun) Weinbender. She was baptized into the Christian Faith shortly thereafter. Most of her young years were spent on a farm just southeast of Burgis where her family had moved. She attended West Wexford School, completing Grade 8. Growing up in the depression years meant there was always lots of hard work to be done. Elsie helped in the garden, in the house and herding the milk cows to and from the pasture that was located near the Whitesand River. Elsie had a very close knit family (something that remained for all of their lives) and they enjoyed simple pleasures in those years. Evenings were often spent singing together with Elsie or her sister, Irene, accompanying them on the pump organ. They were all very musical, playing an instrument by ear or singing together in perfect harmony. Their Christian faith was very important to the family. Elsie recalled that sometimes they would go by horse and buggy or sleigh to Runnymede to attend the Lutheran church in that community as there was no Lutheran Church where they lived. Between those times, they worshipped in turns at the homes of other Lutheran families and celebrated Holy Communion when a minister would come through the area. In their teenage years, Elsie and Irene boarded at Pastor Propp’s house in Yorkton, took confirmation classes and were confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church. In her late teen years, Elsie joined the work force becoming a nurses’ aide at the Yorkton Hospital. She enjoyed her work very much, but also liked living in town because on an off day in summer she could go for picnics to York Lake or attend the fair. In 1947, Elsie met her husband, Victor Propp when he and his mother, Anna Sippel and brother, Dave stopped at the Weinbender farm for a visit on their way home after a trip to Nipawin. They were married on April 10, 1948. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Judith and Timothy. Elsie was an excellent homemaker who cooked great meals, kept a very clean house, grew a large garden and preserved the produce for the winter months. She even milked cows, when they were allowed to be kept in town, again with a long trek to take the cows to and from pasture in the summer. Elsie also served as the unofficial secretary for Victor’s trucking business (hauling grain or cattle for area farmers) taking calls and messages from his customers. Later she became the Rhein correspondent for the Yorkton Enterprise. Christ Lutheran Church was a big part of Elsie and Victor’s lives. Regular church attendance was very important to them both. Elsie taught Sunday School for many years - the years when each class would sit at the front of the church with their teachers during the worship service. As well she became a member of the Ladies Aid and sung in the choir. Sunday was always a day of rest, spent visiting family or going to the farm at Burgis. Every year Elsie and Victor would take a little holiday. When the children were young, each year, a week was spent at Madge in a rented cabin. There was lots to do, swimming, sun bathing on the beach, building sand castles, fishing and going for boat rides. The day usually ended with a wiener and marshmallow roast. When the children were gone from home, September would find them travelling to Alberta or BC. There was no need to go further abroad, as they felt Canada had many wonderful sights for them to explore. As Elsie got older several medical conditions robbed her of her health. She was determined to live independently at Rhein as long as possible. She looked after Victor at home for as long as she was able. When he moved to the Care Home, she eventually moved into the Gladstone Seniors Residence in Yorkton and in 2013 became a resident of the Langenburg Care Home. Elsie passed away peacefully on December 29, 2015 at the Care Home. Elsie was predeceased by her parents, George and Maria Weinbender; husband, Victor Propp; sister, Marie (in infancy), Mary (Fred) Lee, Martha (Jack) Livingston, Elizabeth (Oscar) Fandrey, Hilda (in infancy), Irene (Harold) Ehrlich and her only brother, Alex (Pauline) Weinbender as well as grandson, Geoffrey Hertlein and nephews, Ian Livingston and Doug Fandrey. SEDLICK - Walter (Wally) John Sedlick beloved father of Gary and Kari passed away with his daughter by his side at the Wascana Rehab Centre, Veterans Ward, Regina, SK on December 10, 2015. He is predeceased by his wife Helen, his parents, Zigmond and Katherine (Abrametz) and after their passing, step-mother Dolly (Letwinetz); his sister, Evelyn and her husband, Lex George. Walter is lovingly remembered by his son Gary (Joanne) of Vernon, BC; grandchildren, Keith and Karla Sedlick both of Calgary, AB; daughter Kari (Don) of Regina; grandchildren Ryan and Reid of Regina as well as many other relatives, friends and neighbours. Walter was born in Yorkton, SK on January 11, 1926. As a young man of 18 he enlisted in the Navy, but was turned down, so he joined the Army on October 14, 1944 and spent over 2 1/2 years in the dental core with several posts spanning the west to east coast of Canada.

He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. After the war he returned to Yorkton and built a number of houses with his Dad. Walter was very athletic and had a lifetime love of sports and in particular for hockey. He played with the “Yorkton Reos”. The player’s became his life- time friends. He married Helen Weselowski on July 1, 1950 at St. Gerard’s Church in Yorkton. They made Yorkton their home. Gary was born in 1953 and Kari came along in 1957. Both Walter and Helen had a great head for business and in 1955 they built and ran “Club 55”, a dinner & dance establishment just west of Yorkton. Walter worked as a salesman with Auto Electric, Carnduff Motors and Royal Ford. He also had an import/export business called Stewal Enterprises that he operated for several years. Walter was very active in the community before and after retirement. He enjoyed golf, bowing, horseshoes, playing crib and going to Yorkton Terrier hockey games. He was very competitive by nature and won many trophies and awards over the years. He had the fortune to go to bowling tournaments in Saskatchewan and represent Saskatchewan in other parts of Canada. He visited people in the hospital and nursing home and would bring his crib board along and enjoy a crib game any time. Walter had a huge giving heart for those less fortunate and would generously donate to many Charities. He also provided to 7 foster children overseas. In July 2011 Walter and Helen moved out of the Family home that Walter and his Dad built and moved into an apartment. After Helen’s passing on February 8, 2015, Walter’s health deteriorated with congestive heart failure. He spent time in and out of hospital in Yorkton while living at the Gladstone Senior Residence. In August of this year he moved to Regina to be closer to Kari, Don and their family. He briefly resided at the Victoria Park Personal Care Community then went into the hospital. On September 17 he was moved from the General Hospital to the Wascana Rehab Centre, Veteran’s ward. He quickly made friends with the other Vets and had his daily fill of crib. The establishment and care he received here was “First Class” in his words. He will be sadly missed by all. He had a special place in all our hearts. His faith kept him strong in believing that he was given the grace to serve his family, his church, his community and those less fortunate. The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 11:00 am from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre, Hwy #10 East, Yorkton, with Rev. Devon Pattemore officiating. The interment will follow in the Yorkton City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, Veteran’s Unit 3-5, 2180-23rd Avenue, Regina, SK S4S 0A5.

NARROW LOT HOMEDesigned especially

for a narrow lot, this charming two-storey fam-ily home includes three bedrooms plus a den, as well as a terrace and a covered deck at the back.

Entry is through a foyer, where the den is to the left. Directly ahead, through an archway, is a coat cupboard, as well as the U-shaped staircase up to the second-floor sleeping bedrooms.

A second archway leads into the dining-room and kitchen, while just beyond, under a dra-matic vaulted ceiling, is the great room.

Located in a space at the back of the home that looks over the garden, the great room features French doors that open onto a covered deck with a sunny terrace beyond. A gas fireplace will make this room cozy during the cooler months.

The dining room is separated from the stair-well by a railing, and includes an optional buf-fet, which will increase storage and serving space.

The kitchen’s raised eating bar and prep island divides it from the dining room. The U-shaped counter con-figuration promises efficiency, and a large

pantry in one corner pro-vides extra room for sta-pes and canned goods. The window over the double sink looks out to the covered deck.

Also on the main floor is the laundry room, as well as a two-piece pow-der room with a built-in shelf.

Upstairs, the master suite includes a window with an extra-deep sill that overlooks the front garden. The en-suite includes a soaker tub, as well as a glass shower stall, and the roomy walk-in closet offers space for the most clothes-con-scious couple.

The second and third bedrooms, both over-

looking the back garden, share a three-piece bath-room. A linen closet is located nearby, handy to all three bedrooms. A railing separates the stairwell from the upper landing, and there is a window on the lower landing.

Exterior finishes include horizontal siding and shingled gable ends, as well as decorative oval vents in the upper gables. The shingles are echoed in the bases of the pilasters that support the covered front porch.

This home measures 25 feet wide and 57 feet, six inches deep, for a total of 1,917 square feet. Ceilings, except in the great room, are nine feet high. The design also includes an unfinished basement.

Plans for design 9-3-212 are available for $725 (set of 5), $820(set of 8) and $896 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges.

Rush brings pro

lacrosse to SKView from the Cheap

Seats is kind of an exten-sion of the newsroom. Whenever our three regu-lar reporters, Calvin Daniels, Thom Barker and Randy Brenzen are in the building together, it is fre-quently a site of heated debate. This week: Are you excited about the National Lacrosse League coming to Saskatchewan.

High hopesIt’s not every day

Saskatchewan gets a new professional sports fran-chise. The last time, as near as I can ascertain, was in 1994 when two teams, one in Regina and one in Saskatoon played in the North Central Baseball League, then split off into the Prairie League the following year. The Prairie League was done by 1997.

In 1990, Saskatoon entered the ill-fated World Basketball League, which folded in 1992 after just five sea-sons.

Before that it was 1958, when Saskatoon shared a team in the Western Hockey League with St. Paul, Minnesota. That only lasted one season.

Of course, even all of those were only minor league professional teams. To find the last time a major league professional team was formed in Saskatchewan you have to go back all the way to the Roughriders.

That changed on January 2, 2016 when the Saskatchewan Rush played its first game against Calgary in the National Lacrosse League (NLL).

Of course, the NLL has a long way to go to attain the status of a NBA, MLB, NHL or even CFL, but it is nevertheless a top-level professional sports league.

The impediment for professional sports in Saskatchewan has always been the size of our cit-

ies. Without support from the whole province, pro-fessional franchises

I really hope the prov-ince gets behind the Rush. I love box lacrosse. In fact, I’m already part of a group of five guys who have bought a 10-pack of tickets and will travel to Saskatoon twice this sea-son to see the Rush play.

The biggest liability this new franchise has, however, may be the NLL culture. It includes really loud music blar-ing throughout the game, even while the game is on and cheesy cheerlead-ers roaming around the arena.

I get the idea of trying to attract a young audi-ence, but it may be at the expense of a reliable one. When Ottawa had a team, for example, my mom tried to support it, but one game was all she could handle.

Hopefully the Rush tone it down a bit and win over the fans with quality play rather than gimmicks. They are off to a good start beating Calgary 10-8 in the inaug-ural game.

—Thom Barker

Headed to ToontownWhen you live in a

province of only a mil-lion people, give or take a few tens of thousands over the years, you have to expect professional sports leagues are going to generally pass on establishing a team here.

Granted, we have the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. The franchise is highly successful in terms of fan support and making money.

Success in terms of winning the league’s big prize is another matter, one which I could write volumes on the frustra-tion that has caused, but

that is for another time. There was the pie-

in-the-sky dream once upon a time Bill Hunter was going to bring the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey Leagueto Saskatoon. It was a nice dream for a fewweeks, although the coldof a Saskatchewan winter thwarting travel, and thatsmall population basemade it folly to think itmight work over 40-plus home games a season.

But now Saskatchewanhas another chance toshow we can be a ‘big league’ province.

The National LacrosseLeague has come to theprovince, transferringthe Edmonton franchise to Saskatoon.

That we have theRush here means fans are going to see a com-petitive team from theget-go. The team wonthe NLL crown in 2015in Edmonton, and only moved because owner-ship and arena manage-ment couldn’t get a new deal done. (As an inter-esting aside there have already been suggestions the NLL with expandback to Edmonton in thenear future).

Will it work inSaskatoon? It should.

Box lacrosse is of course Canada’s officialsummer game, and frank-ly it is as exciting, and entertaining as any sport. It has obvious elementsof hockey, tons of shots because of a shot clock, is physical, and lots ofoffence. It is a treat forsports fans.

I know I’ll head west two or three times this season, (there are ninehome games). The Rushstarted the season on theroad in Calgary Saturday, and it was an excitingone.
