COPAN - Mrs. Matilda Copan, formerly of Yorkton, widow of Gordon passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at her residence in Melville. Matilda Copan (nee Farkas) was born March 8, 1919 on her family farm in the Parkerview Saskatchewan district. She was the youngest of 12 siblings (3 of which died at birth) of parents David and Esther Farkas (nee Popp). She was raised on the family farm and attended Crewkerne School, which was a small one-room school within their district. In the early 1940’s she would move to the Oliver area of the Okanagan Valley where she worked in the fruit and orchard industry for some time prior to returning to the prairies that she truly loved. Matilda loved the prairies and to the very end of her life on earth she could not imagine a better or more desirable place to live.

On October 26, 1946, Matilda was united in Holy Matrimony to Gordon Copan at the Roman Catholic Church near Parkerview. The couple then took up residency in Parkerview, SK, where they would operate their garage business and post office until 1964. Matilda and Gordon would have one child (a son- Gary) born in 1952. On July 1, 1964 they would move to Yorkton, SK where Gordon would work briefly at a machine shop, before continuing his career in the post office. Matilda worked briefly at Zellers but left her career to focus her time at home as a housewife, mother and grandmother. They resided in Yorkton until Gordon’s passing in 2003 and due to her failing health moved to St. Paul Luther Home in Melville, SK, where she lived until her passing on August 25, 2015. Matilda was very strong in her faith. One of the things she looked forward to each year was attending the August pilgrimage at Rama, SK and also Kaposvar near Esterhazy. She never missed the trip until her health and limbs failed her in 2003. Matilda loved the time spent with her niece (Cynthia Lalonde - nee Kapin) picking mushrooms and wild fruits of all kinds in the woods. She enjoyed baking and crocheting afghans, sweaters and all sorts of things. She was also very involved at St Gerard’s Parish and the C.W.L. perogy bees, funeral lunches, bazaars and serving at weddings and other events were a high priority for her. Being a devoted mother and even more importantly a dedicated grandmother was her top priority in life. There was nothing she and her husband would not do to help their son or grandchildren. At her grandchildren’s very young age she would so often say “no body can look after these kids like me and no one else is going to while I’m around ---so there”. She is predeceased by her parents David and Esther (nee Popp), her brothers Louis, Frank, David Jr, Stephen, her sisters Helen, Mary, Margaret and Veronica and three siblings lost at birth, also her husband Gordon and a grandson Derek. She leaves to mourn her passing her son Gary and wife Donna of Vernon, BC, her grand- daughter Shelly and companion (Ian Gunn) of North Vancouver, BC and a grandson Jason and wife Tahirih (nee Schulz) of Calgary and great- grandchildren Jade and Brayden of Calgary (parents Jason and Tahirih) of Calgary and many nieces and nephews and friends. Matilda was a friendly person who loved to visit and chat and she leaves this world a better place because of this. May you forever rest in peace -- Granny. A Prayer Vigil was held on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the Chapel of Bailey’s Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass was held on Friday, September 4, 2015 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Fr. Francis Hengen as the Celebrant. Serving as the organists were Lorraine Lysak (Vigil) and Chris Fisher (Mass). Members of St. Gerard’s choir led in the singing of the hymns, “Praise To The Lord”, “Psalm 23”, “Amazing Grace”, “I am The Bread of Life”, “Song of the Angels” and “How Great Thou Art”. The readers were Cynthia Lalonde and Tahirih Copan. The cross bearer was Shelly Copan. The Gift bearers were Gary and Donna Copan. Members of the C.W.L. formed the Honour Guard. The interment followed in the Garden of Devotion at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Jason Copan, Ian Gunn, Gerald Farkus, Garry Brown, Ken Washek and Allan Pacholko serving as the casket bearers. Memorials honouring Matilda’s life may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

PIDKOWICH - Irene Ann Pidkowich (nee Fox), beloved wife of the late Stephen Pidkowich of Yorkton, passed away at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at the age of 80. Irene was born to Joseph and Dorothy (nee Walker) Fox on November 20, 1934 in Calgary, AB. Throughout her childhood, her family lived in a number of communities in Alberta including Calgary, Edmonton, Champion and Taber. It was in Taber that she graduated from high school in 1952. Irene took her nursing training at the Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing in Calgary and graduated with her RN in May of 1955. She took further specialty training in obstetrics in Boston, MA. Her career as a nurse took her to Vancouver, BC, Calgary, AB, Ponoka, AB and finally to Yorkton, where she worked at the Yorkton Union Hospital from 1964 until her retirement in 1991. It was during her time in Ponoka that she had the

good fortune to meet Stephen Pidkowich. They were married on October 12, 1963 and moved to Yorkton in February of 1964. They were blessed with four children: Barbara, Angela, Allison and Mark. Irene took great pride in her career as a nurse and especially enjoyed her time working on obstetrics. Even after being retired for more than 20 years, people still remembered “Mrs. P.” from when they had their babies. What Irene loved most in life was being a mother and grandmother. She volunteered her time to organizations supporting the activities her children were involved in: Band Boosters, the Yorkton Music Festival Association and the Yorkton Figure Skating Club and Summer Skating School. She always looked forward to visits with her grandchildren and was interested in what was happening in their lives. Irene converted to Catholicism in her early twenties and her faith was very important to her. She was a member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and the U.C.W.L. She participated in the Redemptorist Collaborator program and completed the Pastoral Care Lay Training Course. Irene loved to sew and was known to create matching outfits for her children when they were young. Her skills as a seamstress came in handy for all the figure skating costumes and dresses she made as well as for the Halloween costumes she sewed for her children and grandchildren. In her retirement, Irene joined the York Colony Quilter’s Guild and she created beautiful quilts for her family. Irene was predeceased by her husband, Stephen (2008); her father, Joseph Fox (1990); her mother, Dorothy Jancsek (1994); her step-father, Steve Jancsek (1990) and her step-sister, Jean Watson (2012). Kachur (1998), Ken Cameron (2006) and Peter Pidkowich (2011); sisters-in-law, Mary Kachur (1995) and Victoria Pidwick (2002) and nephew, Allen Kachur (1997). PLAN NUMBER 6-4-344COUNTRY-STYLE

SHOWN AT ITS BESTCountry-style is

shown at its best in this expansive family home designed for open living. The highlight of the main floor is the huge great room, distinguished by a 12-foot sloping ceiling, gas fireplace with media shelves and a wealth of windows to bathe the room in natural light.

The dining room is spacious enough for

guests to join the fam-ily and enjoy dinner with ease – and to step out to the patio overlooking the garden. The kitchen is well designed to suit a house of this size and includes a pantry and plenty of countertop and cupboard space.

A pass-through leads to the laundry room, which has its own small covered porch and access to the house – a practical way to keep foot traffic away from the

living areas. Behind the laundry room is a three-piece bathroom with a bath and a shower stall.

A staircase leads to an unfinished bonus room above the garage – a large, rectangular room with a sloping ceiling which would make an ideal media and games area. The master suite on the main floor is private-ly separate from the fam-ily bedrooms upstairs. The en-suite bathroom includes a soaker tub,

shower stall and double vanity.

The upstairs hall over-looks the foyer below and serves to separate bedroom two and a four-piece bathroom from bedrooms three and four. All the upstairs bedrooms gain character from attractive dormer windows. The veran-da, columns with stone accents and the dormers add to the considerable charm of the exterior.

The house is 70 feet, 4 inches wide and 40 feet deep with 2,194 square feet of living space.

Plans for design 6-4-344 are available for $795 (set of 5), $900(set of 8) and $984 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges.

Our NEW 47TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is avail-able for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and han-dling). Make all cheque and money orders pay-able to “JENISH HOUSE DESIGN LTD” and mail to:

S a s k a t c h e w a n ’ s unemployment rate was 4.7 per cent (seasonally adjusted) in August 2015, down from 5.2 per cent in July.

For 23 straight months, Saskatchewan has had the lowest unemploy-ment rate among the provinces. In August, the national unemployment rate was 7.0 per cent.

“Saskatchewan con-tinues to lead the nation with the lowest unemploy-ment rate in large part due to the private sec-tor creating new jobs,” Immigration, Jobs, Skills and Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said.

The CFIB Business Optimism Barometer for August was released last week. It shows that opti-mism has rebounded in Saskatchewan, jumping more than seven points to 61.9 in August, the high-est level since November 2014 and well ahead of the national index of 56.7.

Employment reached an all-time high in the month of August, with 578,700 people work-ing, up 1,600 (0.3 per cent) when compared to last August, and up

4,000 (0.7 per cent) com-pared to July (seasonally adjusted).

Other highlights include:

Private sector employ-ment was up 17,900 (up 5.5 per cent) from a year ago for the third consecu-tive month of year-over-year increases.

The number of people participating in the labour force (working and looking for work) reached an all-time high of 615,500.

Major year-over-year gains were reported for

health care and socialassistance up 7,300;accommodation and foodservices up 3,300; busi-ness, building and othersupport services up 3,200.

Off-reserve Aboriginalemployment was up 1,700 (+3.9 per cent) for six con-secutive months of year-over-year increases.

The youth unemploy-ment rate was 10.0per cent (seasonally adjusted), lowest amongthe provinces, and below the national rate of 13.1per cent.
