In Memoriam In Memoriam

MICHAEL - In loving memory of Jack, husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa, who passed away Aug. 15, 2012.Every day in some small way,Memories of you come our way.Though absent, you are always near,Still loved, missed and always dear.

-Forever loved, Mabel, All the family.

MONKA - Bruce. It has been a year since you left us.I struggle with your absence eve- ryday. Not being able to physically see your broad smile or hear your hearty laugh, is more than I can take.I have my pictures and memories, but it is just not the same.Forever in our hearts you will re- main.I know your pain and sleepless nights have ended, you are sleep- ing peacefully now.For that I am relieved.

-Sleep in eternal peace my brave Father. Love Always, Shawna, Al,

Trista, Dustin and Cassie.

SHEKULA - Johnathon, who passed Jan. 21, 2005.What I’d give if I could say,Hello, Johnathon, in the same old way,To hear your voice, and see your smile,To sit with you and chat awhile,So if you who have a husband,Cherish him with care,For you’ll never know the heart- ache,Till you see his vacant chair.

-From your loving wife, Amelia (Tiger)

WESTERHAUG - In loving memo- ry of Clarence C. Westerhaug, who passed away August 11, 2001.The smile we love is missing,The voice we love is stillA place is vacant in our heartsThat never can be filled. You left us precious memories,Your love will be our guide,You live on through your family,You’re always by our side.It broke our hearts to lose you,But you did not go alone,For part of us went with you,The day God called you home.

-Lovingly remembered by Your wife, Sophie., Your Children,

Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren.

PLAN NUMBER 7-3-868B

SPACIOUS AND GRACIOUS

Spacious and gra-cious, with plenty of curb appeal, this three-bedroom family home contains all the conve-niences and amenities that today’s homeowners desire.

The entrance is set back under a covered porch, offering protec-tion from the elements in inclement weather. To the left is an old-fash-ioned veranda that just needs the addition of a porch swing and a couple of pots of geraniums to maximize its potential.

The L-shaped foyer includes a coat closet and a powder room, both conveniently located for guests. A triangular dis-play shelf provides a set-ting for plants and orna-ments. Overlooking the front veranda is a study or den that is ideally located for use as a home office.

The family area is located at the rear of the home, overlooking a partially covered patio and the back garden. The generously sized great room, open to the foyer through a half-wall, boasts a ceiling that slopes up to the pitch of the roof. The great room’s fireplace will warm up

winter evenings, and a doorway allows access to a covered patio that will expand the living area during the summertime.

The kitchen, separat-ed from the great room and dining room by an angled work island, features an L-shaped counter configuration designed to save steps. A pantry with three dou-ble doors runs along one side of the dining room, where doors open to the patio.

On the other side of the home, located at the back for privacy, is the master suite. A roomy walk-in closet abuts the ensuite, which includes a shower stall as well as a bathtub.

Also on the ground floor is the laundry room, with handy access to the double garage. A second display case, this one with a curved façade, occupies a niche near the laundry room.

An L-shaped staircase leads to the second floor, really a half floor. Here, Bedrooms No. 2 and 3 are separated by a three-piece bathroom.

Exterior finishes include horizontal wood siding, painted pilasters flanking the veranda, partly mullioned win-dows and decorative cross-bracing at the two gables, as well as stone

accents.This home mea-

sures 40 feet, four inch-es wide, by 53 feet, six inches deep, for a total of 1,719 square feet of living space. The design includes an unfinished basement.

Plans for design 7-3-868B are available for $725 (set of 5), $820(set of 8) and $975 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 out-side of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges.

Our NEW 47TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is avail-able for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and han-dling). Make all cheque and money orders pay-able to “JENISH HOUSE DESIGN LTD” and mail to:

Jays are now contendersView from the Cheap

Seats is kind of an exten-sion of the newsroom. Whenever our three regular reporters, Calvin Daniels, Thom Barker and Randy Brenzen are in the building together, it is frequently a site of heated debate. This week: Have the trade dead-line deals the Toronto Blue Jays made turned the team into a contender for the 2015 World Series?

Back in the huntFinally, the Toronto

Blue Jays are relevant again in August.

And barring a disas-ter, they will not just be relevant, but in conten-tion for a playoff spot through September, and that too has been a long time in coming.

This year the team flirted with .500, but stayed in contact with the top American League

teams, and finally man-agement and ownership took the plunge at the trade deadline to bol-ster the team which was showing signs they could take the next step with some help.

And help is what they got.

Hats off to the owner-ship for approving some rather bold moves, and to Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos for get-ting the job done in fill-ing holes, in particular shoring up the bullpen, adding an ace starter,ft, and bolstering both core infield and outfield defence.

Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, over from Colorado was a surprise move, being an upgrade both at the plate and with the glove.

Then to the pitching staff they added a Cy Young winner in lefty David Price, one of the best starters in base-ball. This is the piece of the puzzle most needed, and while he is a rental, being a free agent at sea-son’s end, he is the puz-zle piece most likely to ensure a playoff berth, .

The Jays also added depth and veteran leadership in the bull-pen, with 42-year-old LaTroy Hawkins and 32-year-old Mark Lowe.

And on defence left

fielder Ben Revere is an upgrade, and he adds speed with Revere.

When it is all added together I fully expect the Jays in the post sea-son. As I write this the morning of Aug. 5, the team has climbed into a wild card spot. It’s by a slim half-game, but if the playoffs started today they’d be in.

They will at least hold that spot I am confident in saying.

And, they may yet track down the New York Yankees for the American League East crown. They sit 5.5-games back, but with 13 games against the Yankees still to come, it is possible. And 8-5 record in those games puts them close, the remaining games can be made up.

Either way, the Jays will be in the playoffs, and that is exciting as a Saskatchewan sports fan especially since our Roughriders are a dump-ster fire.

- Calvin Daniels

ContenderWho woulda thunk we

would be talking about a Blue Jays run for the World Series?

After losing ace Marcus Stroman for the season during spring training with a torn ACL, Jays pitching struggled to

keep up with the team’s powerful offence.

Still, with a stellar performance by starting pitcher Mark Buehrle and hot bats through-out the lineup and even beyond, the Jays man-aged to hang around .500 as the trade deadline approached.

What were the chan-ces GM Alex Anthopoulos would be able to pull something off that would turn the Jays into con-tenders in the dog days?

We were one ace short of a starting order, weak in the bullpen and the defence did not match what is arguably the best offence in the majors, so the chances seemed slim.

When I heard he traded lead-off batter and four-time all-star José Reyes, I briefly wondered if maybe Alex was writing off 2015 and looking to rebuild for next season. It turned out, though, he got Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitski, a defensive upgrade to Reyes with power in the batter’s box.

When rumours started circulating that the TO GM was looking to deal for David Price, a candi-date for best pitcher in baseball today, I started to dare to hope Alex was serious about building a contender. The chances of actually getting Price seemed remote, but we got him.

Add in two veteran relievers in LaTroy Hawkins and Mark Lowe and it appears, beyond all odds, Anthopoulos has managed to plug all the holes.

Since these acqui-sitions, the Jays have looked like they will be a lock for one of the playoff wildcard berths and may even have a chance to chase down the Yankees for the AL East division title.

Of course, on-paper prowess does not neces-sarily translate to on-field success, but it is thrilling the Blue Jays are now. a legitimate threat to go all the way in 2015.

Go Jays!-Thom Barker
