WONCHULANKO - We are stunned and heartbroken over the sudden and unexpected passing of Bruce Wonchulanko at home on September 22, 2015. He was 59 years young. Bruce was born on June 21, 1956 in Kamsack, SK, to George and Olga Wonchulanko. Bruce grew up with his older brother Eugene by his side. Bruce married the love of his life and soul mate, Adrienne Diduck, on May 20, 1978. Soon after Bruce and Adrienne were married, they moved to Calgary where Bruce received his training to become a machinist. In 1981, they moved back to Yorkton where Bruce began his employment with Parkland Engine Rebuilders. They were then blessed with two children: Chad on July 27, 1981 and Carmen on October 18, 1984. In 1994, Bruce became business partners with his friend and colleague, Norman Dumka, when they purchased Parkland Engine Rebuilders (1994) Ltd. Bruce and Norm

complimented each other in every way of the day to day operations of the shop, just as any second marriage should work. Bruce continued to farm with his brother and dad until 1996 when they had an auction sale and rented out the land. Bruce involved himself in both Chad and Carmen’s childhoods in every aspect. He coached tee-ball and hockey with Chad, attended synchro meets and organ recitals with Carmen and encouraged them in everything they did. Bruce’s love of snowmobiling rubbed off on Chad and they attended derbys and were able to go sledding to the mountains together. Bruce and Adrienne took their first big trip as a couple for their twenty-fifth anniversary when they took a cruise through the Caribbean. They made sure to visit a few other tropical destinations in the following years before much of their holidays were spent visiting Carmen when she lived in Toronto, ON and now in Vancouver, BC. In July 2009, Bruce and Adrienne turned their dream into a reality when they moved north-east of Yorkton and put their heart and soul into an abandoned yard site and made it their loving home. Together they loved to entertain their friends and family in their home and you could always find Bruce with a smile on his face and a story to tell. He welcomed son-in-law Sean Zukewich on May 18, 2013 and daughter-in-law Candice Weise on November 15, 2014 and loved them as one of his own. Bruce was beyond proud of his children and the life that he shared with his wife. He would have done anything for them and provided a wonderful and full life for his family. On September 6, 2014, Bruce became Grampa Grampa Grampa when Paige Joy was born. His heart overflowed with love for his granddaughter and he looked forward to every trip to Regina to pick Paige up from the airport. Bruce leaves to remember his life and cherish their memories, his loving and caring wife of 37 years Adrienne, son Chad (Candice) Wonchulanko, daughter Carmen (Sean) Zukewich, granddaughter Paige Zukewich, mom Olga Wonchulanko, brother Eugene (Sharon) Wonchulanko, mother-in-law Mary Puchala, sister-in-law Gloria (Ivan) Armstrong, brother-in-law Greg (Donna) Diduck, brother-in- law Sheldon (Deb Cook) Diduck and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, too numerous to mention. Bruce was predeceased by his dad George Wonchulanko, father-in-law Anton Diduck and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Bruce was a hell of a guy and we will miss him. A Prayer Vigil was held on Monday, September 28, 2015 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton. The reader was Kevin Diduck and the Prayers of Intercession were led by Glen Walsh. Words of Remembrance were shared by Chad Wonchulanko. The homily was delivered by Very Rev. Fr. Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. The Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Basil Chomos as the Celebrant. The musicians, Lorraine Lysak and Kenton Lysak led St. Gerard’s Choir and the congregation in the singing of the hymns. The readers were Chad Wonchulanko and Carmen Zukewich. The General intercessions were led by Glen Walsh. The Gift Bearers were Candice Wonchulanko & Sean Zukewich. Serving as Eucharistic Ministers were Nola Walsh, Rosella Warner & Adeline Oystrick. The cross bearer was Norman Dumka. “Everyone Who Shared in Bruce’s Life” were considered honourary pall bearers. The interment followed in the Garden of St. John at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Eugene Wonchulanko, Clare Walsh, Byron Petruk, Ron Hiduk, Glen Wozny and Bruce Tulloch serving as the casket bearers. GOGAL - Allen Eugene Gogal, beloved husband of Doreen (nee Rapitta), passed away suddenly on Friday, September 25, at his home in Yorkton, at the age of 77 years. He was born on the family farm in the Stenen area on Dec 6, 1937, the second youngest of seven children born to Paul and Anne Gogal (nee Surcan). Like many farm children of the time, his early education was gained at a one-room country school and completed at the nearby Stenen High School. His growing up on the farm, where hard work was the order of the day, no doubt contributed to a strong work ethic, which continued throughout his life. After graduating from High School in Stenen, Eugene found employment with Canadian National Railways, working as a Station Agent. This became his lifetime career, a job which took him to many small towns throughout Saskatchewan, Manitoba and even into the United States. During his last few years,

he worked as a Dispatcher, based out of Melville. He enjoyed his work, particularly the daily contact with the local farm folk, with which he shared a common background. It was while at his posting in Kipling, SK, in 1959, that he met his future wife and they were married on August 15, 1959. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage and were blessed with two children, a daughter, Corrinne and a son, Sheldon, both of whom have grown up to lead successful lives. They also have two grandchildren, Nicolle and Evan Gogal. Eugene’s outside interests were many and varied. He particularly enjoyed watching sports, whether it be hockey, football, baseball, curling and especially, golf. Both he and Doreen belonged to the local golf club in Yorkton. He was always up to date on all team standings and various players and always enjoyed a good discussion on the merits of the participants. For a number of years, he was an avid coin collector, eventually having a complete set of coins dating back to the 1800’s. Fishing with old buddies was also a favourite pastime and he even made a couple of fly-in trips to northern lakes to try his luck. He also kept up to date on the affairs of the world and was not shy about expressing his opinion on how world problems could and should be solved. In addition, for a number of years he collected and refurbished antiques, starting with old buggies and progressing to furniture, lamps, clocks, glassware and phonograph machines. He continued wheeling and dealing in this field right up to his final days. Eugene was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Anne; two brothers, Norman and Tom; sister, Evelyn; brothers-in-law, Harry Bazansky, Bill, Ted and Len Rapitta; sister-in-law, Betty Lamont and nephew, Brian Bazansky. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Doreen; daughter, Corrine; son, Sheldon; grandchildren, Nicole and Evan (Aaliah); brother, Harold (Annette); sisters, Florence Bazansky and Geraldine (Ted) Bellows; in-laws Philip Rapitta (Barb); Marie Rapitta; Bernice Rapitta; Valentine (Eileen) Rapitta; Roger (Shirley) Thevenot; Larry (Dianne) Wood; Randy (Carmen) Rapitta; Ken (Georgina) Moreau; Ray (Linda) Rapitta; Fran Rapitta and Erling (Bonnie) Madsen; as well as many nephews, nieces, co-workers and friends. A Visitation was held on Monday, September 28, 2015 at the Chapel of Bailey’s Funeral Home in Yorkton. The Celebration of Life Service was held on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 in the Garden of Memories at Yorkton Memorial Gardens. Randy Rapitta led the prayers and spiritual message. Reflections of Eugene’s life was shared by Larry Wood. The urn was carried to his resting place by his children, Corrine and Sheldon Gogal. FLAVEL - Helen P. (nee Macknak). We regret to announce the passing of Helen on October 2, 2015, at the age of 76 years old. Helen was born on March 31, 1939 near Dysart, SK. Helen started her career working as a bank teller in Regina. She met her husband and took time off to raise their family and later worked for the Federal Government. She was involved with the mentally handi- capped, the St. Gerard’s CWL and the Yorkton & District Horticultural Society holding various positions in each. Her greatest joy was her family and tending to her plants. Helen was predeceased by her parents Mary and Frank Macknak. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Alan and their four sons; James of Yorkton, Robert (Adele) of Regina and theirchildren Nolan and Curtis, Michael (Heather) of Regina and theirchildren Christopher and Terri, Marlin (Vanessa) of Weyburn and daughter Sela; brothers, Felix (Betty),

Johnny (Debbie); sisters, Veronica, Francis (Haven) and Vicky; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Prayers were held on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Yorkton City Cemetery. RYAN - Hugh Gerard Ryan. February 16, 1933 - September 21, 2015. Hugh was born in New Glasgow, NS where he attended school moving to Saskatchewan in 1953. He retired from the Fire Services in 1986 and spent several glorious years travelling. He and Doreen wintered in Arizona until 2004 moving to BC in 2005. He leaves behind to mourn his passing his loving wife of 59 years and 3 months, Doreen; children, Barb Ryan of Fox Creek, AB, Kevin Ryan of Moose Jaw, SK, and Donovan (Jody) Ryan of Rihyad, Saudi Arabia; grandchildren, Scott, Mark, Todd, Thomas, Michelle and Matthew; as well as many other family members in the Eastern provinces. Hugh enjoyed most sports playing baseball, hockey and curling in his early years. He was an avid golfer well into this retirements. Hugh was known for his sense of humour and his animated joke telling. The Lord has seen fit to end his suffering. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. A Memorial Mass has taken place at the Church of the Ascension in Parksville, BC. Impressions of the new mailboxes

Time for gun laws south of the border

View from the Cheap Seats is kind of an exten-sion of the newsroom. Whenever our three regular reporters, Calvin Daniels, Thom Barker and Randy Brenzen are in the building together, it is frequently a site of heated debate. This week: How do you feel about the end of door to door mail service?

Not a ballot issueTo hear proponents

of door-to-door delivery talk about it, you would think it was a provision of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In fact, it is little more than a sacred calf. Even before the conver-sions started last year, only about 32 per cent of Canada’s 15.7 mil-lion postal addresses received door-to-door service.

I live in a newer neigh-bourhood, before that I lived in an apartment building and before that a rural area where I had to drive into the nearest town to get my mail. Our community box is a big upgrade from that.

Door to door mail service has always been a privilege of the older

areas of urban centres and are really the only places where the issue has any traction.

And even there, as evidenced by the many people I have talked to in Yorkton who are current-ly being converted, there is very little uproar. The fact is, it is a tiny min-ority who will be truly inconvenienced.

For one thing, who actually gets any mail that they want these days. For me personally, it is once a month when my National Geographic arrives and once a year when I get a birthday card from my mom.

My wife gets a little bit more than I do, but even then if we checked it once a month, we wouldn’t be missing anything.

We pay all of our bills electronically, so even a lot of that unwanted mail is moot.

This is also borne out by the statistics. In 2014, Canada Post delivered 1.4 billion fewer pieces of mail than in 2006.

It is just not a ballot box issue, I’m afraid, except maybe in down-town Montreal from what I hear.

the brave new world of corner mailboxes.

Unless I missed it the world did not come to a fiery end, one coincid-ing with the end of home mail delivery.

Of course unlike what some of the rhetoric sug-gested, I hadn’t expected as much as a ripple from the change.

I grew up on a farm. The first address we had was Clashmoor. It was a small place with the post office a room, with the post mistress and family living in the same build-ing.

That post office would close and in time the village itself, the store burning, the elevator closing, the branch line

abandoned and removed. I understand the whole village area is now crop-land.

Eldersley was the next address, green metal mailboxes in front of the one bay volunteer fire hall.

And then a box in the post office in Tisdale.

Never was there even a thought of home deliv-ery, and we survived just fine.

And that was in an era when the family allow-ance cheque still came via mail.

When letters were physical things.

Today most cheques are direct deposited.

Letters come through email.

Even parcel delivery when made by Canada Post are usually a notice so you get in your vehicle

and go to pick them up at a depot.

Home delivery, which was also suspect in the sense it was far from a universal service, not even everyone in Yorkton had it, has increasingly become unneeded.

As for the boxes, they are aesthetically nice, far from being an eye sore on the streets.

They do foster a level of physical activity get-ting us to walk for at least the mail.

So when all factors are tabulated, the mail still gets to us, the world changed a little, but to no ill effect, and the world rolls on.

Well-receivedWhen it comes to the

new mailboxes at the end of the block, I was originally on one side of the fence, but have since came over to the other side.

Originally, I didn’t like the idea of walk-ing out to get the mail. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not due to being lazy. I simply enjoyed convers-ing (albeit only briefly) with the mailman/woman whenever they had some-

thing for me (even though it was usually a William… that is, a bill).

I also wasn’t a fan of it because I thought theelderly people wouldn’t enjoy walking out to the mailbox daily to fetch theflyers and post.

Man, was I wrong about that one! See, my mailbox is shared witha retirement commun-ity, so when I go get themail I usually end up speaking with a veteranYorktonite, and it turns out that the majority of them absolutely love the new mailboxes.

To many, they feel asif it’s a blast from the past, having to physically leave the house to get the mail is something thatreminds them of their childhood on a dailybasis.

After speaking with several older members of the community, I now feel as it the new mailboxes are a grand idea. Theyhonestly bring smiles to the faces of people, allthe while forcing people to be even slightly more active, which is never a bad thing.

VIEW FROM THECHEAP SEATS

I realize what I’m about to say isn’t a popular opinion in the Yorkton area, but in the wake of another sense-less tragedy of gun vio-lence at a school in the United States; the time has come for govern-ment officials in the US to quit turning a blind eye on what seems to be a regular occurrence and adopt, at the very least, gun laws similar to what

we have in Canada. I’d, maybe, even go a step fur-ther than that as I am not a gun owner and don’t understand why anyone feels the need to own one beyond what would be used for hunting season. I’ve heard all kinds of arguments on this about people living in the coun-try needing to defend themselves from poten-tial criminals and I’m sympathetic as it’s just not realistic to expect police to arrive to your rural property in time to save you in the event of an emergency, but the reality is that if you shoot an intruder, you are going to be tied up in the legal system for a very long time and it’s possible you

won’t come out a winner. I don’t have a solution for those people, but surely one can be found that doesn’t involve a firearm.

The whole ‘ban guns’ argument is for another day; but I think it’s important for regular readers (who brand me as a staunch Conservative) to understand that I don’t, necessarily, fall

in line with the philoso-phy of the government. Having said that, I think Canada’s laws are about as safe as you can get for those wanting to possess firearms and the num-bers back it up.

The United States can’t continue to ignore it. It’s irresponsible. From harvardpolitics.com, it’s revealed that the USA has had 55 school shoot-ings since November 1991 to January 2013. So, there are a few recent ones missing from those statistics. As far as developed nations are concerned, Canada is actually second but we have only had to endure three (I’d argue one is one too many). This web-site allows you to draw a conclusion that if you put a civilian firearm into a civilian’s hand, no good will come from it. In fact, Canada has such low numbers on people who have them, yet the num-ber of school shootings based on a per capita basis is higher than the United States! So, while I respect the opinions

of law abiding citizens who say they deserve the right to carry, I suggest the proof is in the pud-ding as to what is going to happen if more people have them.

Guns will always be obtained illegally. Nothing will stop that no matter what law you put in place, but the fact remains that if fewer guns are available to be stolen, the lesser of an illegal gun problem you will have. The USA has an estimated 270-million civilian firearms. Canada has 9-million. No country even comes close to the USA with those numbers. China would be second at 40-million. There is no argument. The United States’ gun laws are way too slack and it needs to be tightened up for the betterment of all people.

This lunatic from Oregon last week, report-edly, asked people to identify their religion before shooting them. This adds more fuel to my recent argument that there will be a time where some governments will have no choice but to ban all religions because it is the root of all violence and conflict. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a believer in God, was brought up in the Baptist faith, and still support a lot of those principals; but fair is fair. You can’t ban the Lord’s Prayer from school because

the parents of some kid at the back of the classdon’t go to church, yet turn around and say that it’s okay for a group of Muslims to have their own prayer room built at taxpayer expense in uni-versity.

Some have suggested this will be impossible, but it’s not. If you want toenjoy a Christmas break, you can block off holidayswith your boss. If yourboss happens to believe in Christmas and wants toclose the shop, you are in luck. If you are a govern-ment employee, then you are SOL. Governments shouldn’t pick theirholidays based on reli-gion so anyone wishing to celebrate their reli-gious holiday can bookit off, without penalty. Inessence, I guess I’m notsaying ban religion, but you can’t give preferen-tial treatment of one over the other. So, take Merry Christmas off the city bus;but tear down the prayer room at the U of S too. This sounds fair to me asmuch as I despise giving in. But, isn’t this the root of all the evil? It’s eitherreligion or radicals using religion as a front.
