“Together we can,” what does that mean? And why is it our president’s motto for the year? "

I’m a strong believer in collaboration, synergy, networking, team work, and supporting each other. I believe that when a group of people truly work together they can accomplish anything. Our club has had a long history of success and great leaders. I’m honored to be taking on this role as your new president. Last Wednesday night was our first meeting

"Kiwanis is an organization that reaches out to youth and helps them to become the best possible leaders they could be." - Karina, Key Clubber"

I truly believe in that statement because I would not be the person I am today without Kiwanis. We are making a difference in youth's lives everyday. THE KIWANISCOPE

Kiwaniscope Oct. 12th, 2015

Our first meeting of the year started off with laughs and cheers! It did not start off with the cling of the bell because sadly our newly installed President Anna Wu had lost her bell and gavel on the night of her installation. President Anna was determined to stay positive and knew her bell would find it's way home soon. The room was filled with some familiar faces and also some new ones. We welcomed our interclub from West Covina club, Vice President Jeffery Zhu, division secretary Paul White, and past prescient Vern Moyer. There were a number of SLPs (sponsored youth program) in the room. See picture to right, from left to right: Key Clubber Bailey Lu, Cal Nev Ha KIWIN'S District Bulletin Editor Andrea Hu, Cal Nev Ha KIWIN'S District Governor Jade Wong, Glen A. Wilson KIWIN'S Olivia Tang, and Rowland Key Club Vice President Lawrence Chan. In attendance from our club was President Anna Wu, Secretary Dave Wallach, Treasure Izzy Osman, Region 13 Trustee Lon Salgren, Grace Chan, Charlie Huff, Vice President Robert Barba, Tina Banes, David Malkin, and Past President Victoria Davidson. We had many guests, 3 soon to be members: Sam Lee, Elaine Chang, and Octavio Figueroa. A few family members, including our first gentlemen Richard Lee,

first daughter Kyra Wu Lee, and former first lady Teri Malkin. Guests included honorary member Kathy Young, David Koo, Grace Chi Regional Advisor for Foothill Division of Circle-K, Maggie American Cancer Society Relay for Life Hacienda Heights representative, and Steve Gunther, President and Executive Director of the Maryvale Orphanage."

After introducing all of very special guests and our announcements, our SLPs had a very special "presentation" of a very heavy, very large foiled pan covered with cream, marshmallows, pickles,

and randomly selected perishables. It was revealed to our President, Anna, that the bell and gavel were hidden within and she would have to dig through with her bare hands to retrieve them. The bell and gavel was held for ransom. After much failed presidential diplomacy, the price was negotiated down to $150 for the bell and gavel. "

On behalf of the club, President Anna Wu presented three checks to Steve Gunther for Maryvale Orphanage, Maggie for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and Bailey Lu for his Eagle Scout project."

There was a lots of joking and laughing at the meeting, but with the ringing of the bell at 7:40 pm the meeting ended, but the conversations and fellowship continued. "

Speaker of the Week - Anna Wu!Club Meeting, October 7th, 2015!!At our first meeting Wednesday night, our new President, Anna Wu, was our speaker for the evening. She shared her vision and dreams for the club, why she wanted to be president, her opinion of where the club stands currently (our strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats), and her goals for this upcoming year. "!Vision - "Success requires a mindset and vision in order to achieve it. Once you have that vision, you'll realize everything you do works towards that vision, and ultimately, your success. ""Anna's vision is that we become the club that everyone in Hacienda Heights wants to join. That the Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights becomes the club of hope, change, and action. That people are lining up to join and we have more applications for membership than we can process."!Why be president? Why Kiwanis?!Anna felt the answer could be stated better through the words of our own SLP. "!"KIWIN'S will honestly change your life. Being in KIWIN'S has taught me to serve my community and lead through service" - Olivia Tang (President of Glen A. Wislon KIWIN'S)"!" 3 years ago I joined this club that changed my entire perspective on life, brought me new life-long friends, and gave me the opportunity to serve my community in ways I never thought I'd be able to before" - Jade Wong (Cal-Nev-Ha KIWIN'S Governor)"!Anna felt her time in KIWIN'S while in high school changed her life, improving not only her life but her as a person. Our club is making an impact on children's lives daily and she wanted to be able to give back to an organization that has given her so much."!!

SWOT - Strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats! It's clear to Anna that our club's strengths are in the impact we are making on the youths in our community. Our strength is in our projects, the number of hours of service, and people we serve. "!Our weakness is our "hands of service." We all want to do so much and improve our community, but we don't have enough people to do it. We need more people actually out there doing the work and attending the projects. "!Our opportunities are that we are seen by many non-profits and government officials as the club that can get things done and is willing to do it. When Don Knabe's office was approached about being a host town for the Special Olympics, they immediately thought of us and asked us to help. Congressman Ed Royce attended our installation as well as 5 other non-profits. We are seen as a club that is active, helpful, and accountable. "!Our main threat is the same threat of all of America. Service clubs in America have been decreasing in membership for years now. We need to show people the importance of community service and get people to join Kiwanis."!Goals!Anna has three major goals for the club this year:"1. Double Club Membership. "

• "90 in 90"! Anna will reach out and tell 90 people about Kiwanis within her first 90 days."• With press releases, marketing material, and most importantly, the support of the club, Anna wants

to plan an amazing Special Guest Day to spread the word! "• Increase Kiwanis' signage and visibility. Anna wants there to be "<Insert Company Name> Supports

Kiwanis" signs in front of businesses, logos showing that the Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights is everywhere, and show people that we own this town!"!

2. Have More Fun!"• Family Feud - Teamwork Building. "• Social Mixers - every other month"• Learn from our SLPs. They know how to really have fun!"• Costumes, games, dancing, and just be silly!"• Win a cruise with your service hours!"!

3. Better/More Communication."• Phone calls or meet in person instead of emails. Because you get to know more about a person with

a 2 minute conversation than you ever would through email."• Be approachable and really listen to our members. I want to hear what you want to do!"• End meetings on time - This is going to be the hardest part, but I will try my best!!

!!The Passing of the Crown!LTG Installation, October 4th, 2015!by Nancy Bashir"!October 4th was a very important day in Kiwanis history as our very own HRH Mahmood Bashir passed his LTG crown on to Glendora Kiwaniannes Rona Lunde, who unfortunately was crowned in abstention due to a death in her family. The dethroning & enthroning was performed by outgoing Cal-Nev-Ha Emperor, Alan Guire, who is always more than generous with the time he gives his Division 35 subjects. The ceremonial passing of the LTG home club banner was performed by outgoing Hacienda Heights Queen, Victoria Davidson-Castillo, and was presented to outgoing Glendora Kiwanianne Queen, Janna Wells."!As usual, the Kingdom of Hacienda Heights was recognized for it’s many accomplishments & was presented with Division 35 banner patches for Relay For Life, Most Inter-Clubs, Most Mileage for Inter-Clubs, and Most Volunteer Hours (12,500). The final event of the afternoon was when our very own incoming Queen, Anna Wu, was awarded the Kiwanian of the Year honor for all of her hard work & dedication to the Kiwanis Kingdom. Those in attendance from the Hacienda Heights Monarchy were outgoing LTG & outgoing First Lady, HRH Mahmood & Nancy Bashir, outgoing Queen, Victoria Davidson-Castillo, incoming Queen, Anna Wu, Division 35 Trustee Lon Salgren, Past King David Malkin, and Royal Grand Poobah of the Rose Float, Dave Wallach. Joining us at our table was La Puente royalty, incoming King, Tim Seal, and his Queen Consort, Christine.

THE KIWANISCOPEIndustry Hills Charity Pro Rodeo

By Nancy Bashir"

The 30th annual Industry Hills Pro Charity Rodeo rolled right into town last weekend, with quite a few Kiwanis, and even more KIWINS & Key Club cowpokes , all gathered around the Kiwanis Chuck Wagon hawking the best fireside grub you could find……pizza, candy, soda, and water! Master grub slinger, banker, and bartender, Dave Wallach, did a rootin tootin job of managing the campsite, while cowboys David Malkin & Mahmood Bashir were out front trying to lasso in some customers. Also on hand was our brand new lead cowgirl, Anna Wu, as well as ranch-hands Nancy Bashir, Charlie Huff, Lon Salgren, Grace Chu, and Victoria Davidson. We were also joined by the hardworking tenderfoot gang……Los Altos Key Club & KIWIN’S, Glen A Wilson Key Club & KIWIN’S, and Rowland Key Club. A fun, successful fundraising weekend, in spite of the fact that Mother Nature had a bee in her bonnet.

THE KIWANISCOPEKIWIN'S Goldstone Strings of Friendship

By: Victoria Kuang"

Glen A. Wilson KIWIN’S participated in Strings of Friendship, partnering up with Cal Poly Pomona Circle K to craft friendship bracelets for foster kids at Merced. Before the event started, everyone played a few rounds of ice-breaker games so that volunteers from both clubs could get to know one another. After playing games such as Soulmate and Huggy Bear, we all went inside a classroom to start making bracelets. After some brief introductions and instructions, everyone got to work. At the end of the event, there was a huge stack of friendship bracelets waiting to be worn. Part of what made this event so fun was that every partnership had to consist of one KIWIN’S member and one Circle K member, so we were able to meet a lot of new people. Not to mention that we were able to put a smile on kids’ faces with their new friendship bracelets!
