Safe and Sane is for more than just Fire-works

My favorite holiday is just days away… Halloween, also know as All Hallows’ Eve or All Saints’ Eve. This is the night when all good ghouls and goblins head out to haunt their neighbor-hoods and communities. My message this week is cen-tered around the focus of be-ing a good neighbor during this annual celebration…

Did you know… Children are four times more likely to be in a fatal pedestri-ans accident on October 31st compared to any other day of the year? 12 % of youth 5 and UNDER go out trick or treating ALONE? Only 18% of all parents use reflective tape on their chil-dren's’ costumes? Decorative contact lenses are prescription devices that should only be purchased from authorized distributors? Using over-the-counter lenses could lead to eye damage or even blindness. Please keep your eyes open and senses alert to those ghost traveling in your path this week

and weekend. Every witch has a family who wants her to get home safely. Have a safe week in service… ~V~

Madam President called

the meeting to order

at 7:05 AM. Standing tall

and proud Izzeldin Osman

led us in the pledge of

allegiance, Dave Wallach

delivered the invocation,

and Lon Salgren led us in

the singing of the patriotic

song. Madam President

reminded us of our desig-

nated duties for the morn-

ing, Mahmood Bashir perf

ormed the pin & badge

checks and collected food

items for Del Haven, Char-

lie Huff enthusiastically

sold the "split the pot"

tickets, and Madam Presi-

dent circulated the dona-

tion cans. Members in

attendance were Dave

Wallach, Mahmood

Bashir, David Malkin,

Kathy Young, Izzeldin

Osman, Grace Chan, Char-

lie Huff, Wilson Mach, and

Lon Salgren. We wel-

comed our guests Roberto

Castillo, John Carmichael,

and Rita Topalian our

guest speaker, as Dave

Wallach led us in the sing-

ing of our "Welcome

Song". We must not have

sounded too bad, as at the

end of the song all three

of our guests were ac-

counted for and still in the

room. Kathy Young led us

in the singing "Happy

Birthday" as we acknowl-

edged a few birthdays.

Charles Karsch (10/16) and

Madam President Victoria

Davidson (10/26). The

singing club we are, we

next sang "Happy Anniver-

sary" to Kathy & Sam

Young whose 45th anni-

versary is (11/01). Our

club was extremely busy

last week, and thank you

was offered to all our

members who attend-

ed Duarte Installation,

helped out at the Pro Ro-

deo, represented the club

at Del Haven Re dedica-

tion Ceremony, helped at

the Buckboard Day Parade

pancake breakfast, and

attended the La Puente

Historical Society BBQ.

Dave Wallach gave a brief

report on the accounting

for Pro Rodeo and an-

nounced that the club

generated $939.80 in net

profit. Great job by all our

members, and of course

our SLP who were instru-

mental in our success.

Mrs. K for the morning

was Kathy Young and re-

ported that Lon Salgren,

David Malkin, Wilson

Mach, and Izzeldin failed

to shake her hand. All

were invited to contribute

to their choice of our do-

nation cans. Kathy report-

ed that even though

Mahmood Bashir was a

late arrival, he still man-

aged to shake her hand.

Mahmood Bashir self ac-

cessed a contribution to

the ELIMINATE and Chil-

dren's Hospital cans for

being late, and not stand-

ing while addressing Mad-

am President. Our mem-

bers participated in hap-

py/sad dollars and gener-

ously donated $23.00 in

total. We collected $6.00

for Children's Hospital, $3

for Relay for Life, and

$7.00 for ELIMINATE.

Madam President ad-

journed the meeting

at 8:30 AM as we

sang "Hail to Kiwanis". It

was a fun and enjoyable

meeting. Try to come and

join us for our next

meeting.

Checking out our meeting is the future member and representa-tive for San Gabriel Valley YMCA, John Carmichael.

Happy & Sad Dollars

David Malkin – Happy for the SLP’S Wilson Mach – Happy for the successful Pancake Breakfast and happy that I am feeling better and am germ free. Izzey Osman – Thanks to the Club members for all you do for Del Haven. Grace Chan – Not sure if Happy or Sad. Decided to become a Pool worker for the upcoming Elec-tion. So much to do and learn and the guidelines are confusing. I do receive payment for working but a lot of blood, sweat and tears is going into it. Charlie Huff – Happy because last week finalized a year long project, selling my house. For right now

I am homeless (ha, ha). I was looking in Hacienda Heights but that home fell through so now I will be looking in Arcadia. Roberto Castillo – Happy because I am the new section Secretary for the Order of the Arrow. Also happy to be here at another meeting. Dave Wallach – Attended the Duarte Installation and won 3 prizes. One was a theme basket but didn’t win the trip that goes with it. Won an old Polariod Camera still in the original packaging. Took it home but one of my children opened it. Would have been worth $500 on E-Bay if it wasn’t opened. It didn’t have any film with it and it’s difficult to find who sells it. Have been offered $300 for the camera.

Story by David Malkin Rita Topalian, has been a resident of Whittier for 23 years. She has been married to her husband, Misak, for 49 years; together they have raised a daughter and two sons. Rita was born in Germany and immigrated to this country with her parents in 1951 through Ellis Island, and did not speak a word of English when she arrived. Her parents worked for Ford Motor Company and lat-er moved to California for the “Golden Dream”. Short-ly after graduating from Montebello High School, she got married and started her own business after a short stint working for Pacific Bell Telephone. Self-employed since she was 18, she has initiated, developed and successfully participated in many types of business, both service and retail. At the age of 30, Rita decided to pursue a college education and enrolled at Rio Hondo College. During the next nine years, while running a business, being a supportive wife, and raising children, she earned her political sci-ence degree from California State University, Los Angeles. In 1992, she received her Juris Doctorate from Western State College, University of Law. Currently Rita practices law at the Chancery Building in Whittier. During her presentation today Rita shared with us what come of her concerns were that encouraged her to run for office:

Poor environment for business. Lottery dollars not filtering down to the schools. Attempts to water down Proposition 13. Lack of local control. Since Kiwanis Clubs do not take a political po-sition, this story is provided just to share what our speaker presented and does not reflect the opinions of the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club or its members. Each of you should ex-plore the candidates and formulate your own opinion and make sure to vote.

Key-Leader Camp Cedar Glen October 24-26

Service Leadership Program

By Lon Salgren Mahmood and I transported 28 students to the Camp Cedar Glen Key Leader event this past weekend. Soon after we arrived we learned that the camp was double-booked (as it was in the spring), however this time it was deliberate. We shared the camp with a college youth group that arrived on Saturday. Normally both indoor class sessions and meals are in the same room. Instead dining hall was divided by an accordion divider so we could share the facility with the other group, yet remain separate. Classes were held in the room that has previously been used just for recreation. Earlier this year a storage room has been built into each end of this large recreation room. This allows the room to easily store the ta-bles and chairs we would use for the indoor classroom sessions. Lead Facilitator Wendy led the 71 students in learning the Key-Leader lessons with the help of the ten student facilitators. The kids were assigned into “neighborhoods”, each led by a student facilitator. The largest neighborhood was 9, the smallest was 5 kids. You would think that a smaller neighborhood would be at a disadvantage in completing the tasks, but they admitted it was in some respects easier for them because there were fewer voices involved in coming up with ideas. As a result the communication for the group was easier. Saturday afternoon the “A” group headed down to the field while the “B” group was given some leisure time. Past Governor Gary Jander led some of the youth that were on leisure time on a hike. Mean-while the “A” group was given instructions on how to play a game. Three volunteers were called “the blob”. They were given two foam swords and were told their task was to tag the other youth as they ran by. The tag by the blob would only count when all the members of the blob were holding hands. The blob would grow in size as those running past were tagged or if they went out of bounds. Once this activ-ity was finished the group was split into two. The first half headed down to the 15 foot climbing wall. The others stayed on the field and were given instruc-tions on another challenge. They were informed that they had all completed their college and now all had an engineering degree. (Continue on Page 11)

Service Leadership Program

(Continued from Page 10) They were split again into two groups. One group was from the American branch of the company. The others were from the Australian branch. Their groups assembled on each side of the backstop of the baseball field. There was a tarp separating them. Each group had a 5 gallon bucket with a variety of objects. They were given some time to familiarize themselves with the objects. The American team was tasked with building an object using all of the items. Then they would each take turns on a 1 minute call to the other group to describe how to construct the object. They were told that if they used color or a common name to describe an item the call would be terminated. When everyone had a chance at the conference call, the task was completed. They then were invited to check out the other groups work and compare it to what they had created. Next they assembled to discuss the problem, how they could have solved it better, etc. The groups then switched. When they arrived at the wall they were given time to come up with a strat-egy to get everyone over the wall. This challenge requires them to decide what order to send everyone over the wall. When they have come up with a strategy they were told they could begin he task, but could no longer give any instructions verbally. When they have climbed over the top they stay up there and help the next person over. Then they climb down and can no longer assist in getting the others over it, but instead were there only as a safety to help prevent anyone from falling. One of the stu-dents in the group I was with said he had been over the wall last year, but now had an injured knee and could not climb the wall. When his turn came up he was now no longer allowed to help others over and helped as a safety too. I witnessed several of the youth overcome a great fear of the challenge of climbing the wall. They did so with the help and encouragement of all the others in the group. For the last person to get up they used a belt that was looped and held in the outstretched arms of the youth at the top. (continued from Page 11) The “A” and “B” groups switched. Then when eve-ryone was done it was time for dinner. After din-ner they returned to learn more lessons and to finish watching portions of the movie “The Collector of Bedford Street”. Just after 10 PM we all headed down to the camp-fire to toast marshmallows and make Smore’s. Sunday after breakfast and warm-up exercises in the field, we returned to the room for more lessons. One student was missing her cell phone, so we quickly determined it had fallen into a loveseat in this room. The phone was on silent, but you could hear it vibrating when it was called. It was an interesting ten minutes turning the loveseat upside down and dissecting it to retrieve the phone before the lessons began. The day wrapped up with certificates being issued to all the participants, then a closing ceremony just before noon. For the first time we had two representatives from the ARMY attending Key Leader. They were Sgt. Patrick (Rick) L. Martinez and Staff Sgt. Stephen R. Niederriter. It was nice to meet these gentlemen and hear their presentation about the US ARMY and the opportunities for carriers in the service. For those that are not aware, the US ARMY is a co-sponsor of the Key-Leader program and has several free aids to help you study on several subjects on the Key-Leader web site. All participants this week-end also received a handy “March 2 Success” backpack and aluminum bottle. We brought up 28 students and returned with 30 (a pair from our area had been brought up by an-other Kiwanian, so we returned them to DelHaven to be picked up). It was a tight squeeze, but no one complained. Thanks to Mahmood for gathering the information on all the participants that needed rides and for helping to transport and chaperone. Also thanks to DelHaven Community Center for providing the two vans. It was an enjoyable weekend watching the kids as they came together in their neighborhoods and formed bonds. Also it was nice to “catch-up” with several of my fellow Kiwanians. Attending Key Leader with us were: (Wilson KIWIN’S) Sabrina Yang, Allie Chang, Nikita Lee, Meghan Hernandez, Josephine Tjandra, Sophia Uemura, Victoria Kuang, Olivia Chang, Andrea Hu, Lili Anne Labaco and Jade Wong, (Wilson Key Club) Austin Ly, Dylan Tran and Bailey Lu, (Arcadia Key Club) Ryan Tan, (Sierra Vista Key Club) Jason Terrazas, (Mountain View Key Club) Ivan Jimenez, (Rowland Key Club) Jacqueline Ye, Kevin Huo and Sabrina Bodine, (South Hills Key Club) Vivian Tiet, (Diamond Bar Key Club) Alice Pan, (San Dimas Key Club) James Okamura, (Northview Key Club) Danielle Torres and Cynthia Vo and from Div 15 Laura Cornado.

Dinner and Dance

Hacienda Heights Community Center

By Anna Wu Oct 25th, Saturday night, a diner dance served as the inaugural ball for the Hacienda Heights Commu-nity Center. And of course the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis club was there to help out, raise some funds for a good cause and promote Kiwanis in our community. The Hacienda Heights Kiwanis club was there to serve and sell drinks. In attendees were President Victoria Davidson-Castillo, David Malkin, Dave Wallach, Anna Wu, Charlie Huff and his lady friend Pam. It was a fun evening of Italian food and dancing. The tips jar funds all went towards Project Eliminate.
