Congratula-tions. Have a

prosperous and good year On this the eve of the Lunar New Year, I want to wish each and every one of our Kiwanis Family a blessed and prosperous new year. I feel very blessed to live in such a diverse community as Hacienda Heights, where my family is able to participate in the cultures, customs and traditions of the community members around us. To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.

To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Madame President Victo-

ria Davidson arrived for

the meeting allowing eve-

ryone adequate time not

to be late, and with the

clanking of the bell called

the meeting to order

at 7:05 AM. We observed

our normal rituals. Mad-

ame President delivered

the invocation. Patriot

Charlie Huff lead us in the

Pledge of Allegiance. Our

"Song Master" Dave

Wallach led us in the sing-

ing of the patriotic

song. His choice "Oh

Beautiful". Madame Presi-

dent Victoria Davidson

requested Dave Wallach

to introduce our guests,

Elysia Becerra, a former

Key Club member who is

interested in joining our

club, and Cynthia Parlulan

-Colfer, Superintendent of

Schools for HLPUSD, who

was our program to give

us the "State of the Dis-

trict" report. Dave

Wallach was delighted to

oblige Madame President.

We sang the "Welcome

Song", as Madame Presi-

dent led us through it. We

next acknowledged Kathy

Young's birthday (02/12),

and Ted & Nancy Strinz's

anniversary (02/14),

Dave Wallach led all in

attendance in the singing

of "Happy Birthday" &

"Happy Anniversary" song.

Just as we thought we

were finished with our

welcomes and singing, in

walked some of

our SLP'S. Dave Wal-

lach was requested to

introduce them, Dave

struggled a bit with their

names, but successfully

introduced them. We had

from Wilson KIWIN'S, Co-

Presidents LiliLabaco &

Josephine Tjandra, Vice

President Olivia Tang,

Technology Chair, and

Bulletin Editor Andrea Hu,

last but not least District

Policies Chair & Key Lead-

er Ambassador Jade

Wong. Since these kids

have heard our "Welcome

Song" way too many

times, and actually know

the extent of our singing

talents, Madame Presi-

dent decided to spare

them from listening to it

yet one more time. Mem-

bers in attendance were

in a very good mood and

smiling, collected the food

items for Del Haven, while

Madame President circu-

lated the donation cans

for RFL, ELIMINATE, and

Children's Hospital.

Lon Salgren sold the Op-

portunity Drawing Tickets.

Our guest Cynthia pulled

the winning ticket,

Lon Salgren was the lucky

winner. Madame Presi-

dent had "lost her mar-

bles" this morning so Lon

did not get a chance to

pull the blue marble, in-

stead he won $160.00

Kiwanis dollars ($16.00).

The "No Fines" badge was

up for grabs, and Madame

President Victoria Da-

vidson got the deal of the

day, as she was the suc-

cessful bidder taking it

home for $20.00. Madame

President declared every-

one friendly, so there

were no fines, or contribu-

tions to our coffers.

Our meeting was fun, pro-

ductive, informative, and

enjoyable. We missed all

of our members not in

attendance. Hope to see

all of you next week.

News in the Community Rowland Heights Senior Pathfinders

Rowland Heights Senior Pathfinders score BIG again. The Rowland Heights Senior Pathfind-ers are long time supporter of our Shoes That Fit program and Pull Tabs for Ronald McDon-ald House. One of the Pathfinders, Priscilla Lohff, was in Apple Valley and saw these con-tainers in a storage garage. She asked what they were for. The owner said they have just been saving them for a long time. Priscilla, be-ing a big supporter of our Kiwanis projects, immediately thought about our SLP and their Ronald McDonald House pull ztab campaign. She asked if she could take them for donation to a good cause. Pictured are the pull tabs that she arranged to be donated to our Kiwanis SLP and later to Ronald McDonald House.

Story by David Malkin Our Kiwanis Club was honored this week to have the Superintendent of the Hacienda La Puente School District, Cynthia Parulan-Colfer, as our guest speaker. Mrs Parulan-Colfer started off her presentation thanking our Kiwanis Club for the many SLP clubs it sponsors at the High School and Intermedi-ate School levels. She also thanked our club for the annual Stuff-A-Bus event that collects hundreds of dollars of school sup-plies for the district and the various other activities we participate in. Our Club is honored to have Geno Kwok, HLPUSD Board member as one of our members. HLPUSD serves over 19,000 Pre-K through Grade 12 students, as well as over 17,000 adults through an extensive Adult Education program. The school district has many honors that it is proud of. The following is taken from their web site under the Superintendent’s message: “Our District API now exceeds 800. Sixteen of our schools have APIs exceeding 800; another five ex-ceed 900. Six other schools have APIs over 775: well on their way to the State’s 800 target. Our District is a rich mixture of generations of families that have attended and worked in our schools, families new to the area, and families new to our country. As "a community committed to developing lifelong learners," we are continually building our ability to prepare every youngster for success in a four year college, even those who may not choose that step right after leaving high school, and to support adults in meeting personal goals. Our commitment to partnerships exemplifies our Board’s Guiding Principles. Our Board believes stu-dents, parents, staff and community have a shared responsibility:

Many of you have likely seen a photo of Kayla Mueller, the female US hostage in Syria, shown in front of the Kiwanis club honors banner of the Pres-cott, Arizona, club. Her father, Carl, is a 15-year member of that club. We now have learned that Kayla's death has been confirmed, and we know this confirmation is what the family and friends had feared most. The members of the Kiwanis club in Prescott are very close to the Muellers, and have been an im-portant source of support for the family during the 18 months since Kayla was taken hostage. Kiwanis International has been in communication with the Kiwanis club and have extended an offer of any assistance to the family, club or community, for

whatever special needs may arise. Otherwise, thoughts and prayers on behalf of Kayla, the Mueller family, the Kiwanis club of Prescott and the community would be welcome. In response to requests from the public, accounts have been set up to honor Kayla’s memory and to provide assistance to the family. Please send donations to Country Bank, 1275 Gail Gardner Way, Prescott, AZ 86305. Kayla’s Hands is a Tax Deductible 501(c)3 established to fund a designated list of causes and organizations that were important to Kayla. Make checks payable to Kayla’s Hands. Indicate the account number 210-4815 in the memo line. Mueller Family Benefit Account is an account set up to receive donations to help the family offset expenses. This account is not tax deductible. Make checks payable to Mueller Family Benefit Account. Indicate the ac-count number 241-5699 in the memo line. Cards can be sent to the Mueller family.
