The Purpose of Life is to Live it,

to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly

and without fear for newer and richer experience. ~Eleanor Roosevelt

Another week down, 50 more to go… This week has found our club members out and about living a Kiwanis lifestyle: Rodeo, SLP events, installations, interclubs, and our own community activities. “Live it” is what happens when Kiwanis members love their Kiwa-nis experience and, by sharing it with others, strengthen their clubs and, subsequently, increase op-portunities for incredible commu-nity service.

Sometimes we get stuck in the Rat-Race of life and we need a pick-me-up to get unstuck. Volunteer-ing, especially in Kiwanis, can be the meaningful, positive pick-me-up that someone needs. Volun-teering can have an impact on our community, but did you know it can have many benefits for the volunteer as well? Some of those benefits are outlined in the book Ten Professional Development Benefits of Volunteering (Everything I Learned in Life I Learned through Volunteering) by Mary V. Merrill, Merrill Associates. Learn or develop a new skill… Vol-unteering is the perfect vehicle to discover something you are really good at or to develop a new skill. Some skills can enhance a career but you don’t have to develop skill with the intention of facilitating your career. Some events will push you to discover skills you didn’t know you had or that you

didn’t realize you enjoyed. Be part of your community… We sometimes take for granted the community in which we live and work. People and societies co-depend on each other for survival. We can really bridge the expand-ing gap between traditional values and the secular needs through volunteering. As a volunteer, we each can return some of the bene-fits that society gives to us. Motivation and Achievement… Volunteering is about giving your time, energy and skills freely. We make the decision to help on our own accord, free from pressure to act from others. Volunteers pre-dominantly express a sense of achievement and motivation, and this is ultimately generated from our desire and enthusiasm to help. Some people assume that one person can never make a difference. (Cont. on Pg 4)

The Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights meets 7:00 am on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of every month at IHOP, 18261 Gale Ave, City of Industry. And 1st Wednesday, 6 pm, at Casa Blanca, 15922 Gale Ave, Hacienda Heights.

Our first breakfast meeting for the new year was called to order at 7:04 a.m. last Wednesday Oc-tober 8th by Madam Presi-dent Victoria Davidson. Grace Chan led our pledge, Anna Wu left her invocation on the phone at home but shared an inspirational though with us still and Lon Salgren had run home for some audio visual equipment for the speaker, but My Coun-try ‘Tis of Thee was sung in his honor. We had a good sized crowd in IHOP

that morning with club members David Malkin, Dave Wallach, Mahmood Bashir, Kathy Young, Izzy Osman, Charlie Huff and Gino Kwok also in attend-ance. Guest were brim-ming over with five (5) members of the Wilson KIWIN’S LiliAnne Labaw, Josephine Thandra, Me-ghan Hernandez, Andrea Hu and Sophia Vemura all visiting. Roberto (Bob) Castillo also came to share breakfast with his mom. Our guests were rounded out with speakers Rich

Kozak and Cory Ro-drigues. Charlie and Dave both led us in rousing renditions of the Welcome Song with our execution getting better with each version. The singing continued as Anna led us in the Birth-day song for her very own Richard Lee, whose birth-day is October 14th. Victo-ria announced the litany of club events going on this month including Du-arte Installation, Pro-Rodeo, Sierra Madre In-stallation, Buckboard Days

Pancake Breakfast, KI-WIN’S DCM, Historical Society BBQ, Relay for Life Meeting, Grand Opening for the Hacienda Heights Community Center, Fund-raiser at the HHCC and the Public Safety Appreciation Luncheon… WOW! We certainly do stay busy. She also shared the ban-ner the club received an-nouncing to all that Haci-enda Heights is the Home Club for our esteemed Lt. Governor and Immediate Past-President, Mahmood Bashir. Mahmood com-

Story by David Malkin This week’s speaker was a long time friend of Hacien-da Heights Kiwanis, Rich Kozak, ACN & Independent Business Owner. Rich is an experiences business exec-utive and a certified Master Trainer whose positive energy and passionate teaching has earned him high profile positions in business and in our community. Rich is active in our community with St. Matthews Church, the Community Choir, Handel’s Messiah, the Cold Weather Shelter for the Homeless, Indian guides, Boy Scouts and the Regional Chamber of Commerce. He was also active in the 2010 Census Count. Cory Rodrigues, Regional Director ACN was co-presenter with Rich. As an Ambassador in the Regional Chamber of Commerce, Rich promoted his company through ACN, GET BUSINESS SERICES teaching companies how to understand and manage the costs of credit card processing. Two years ago Rich expanded to represent a global company providing essential services used by all business and residences and to help “feed the hungry children” when bills are paid. Rich guides businesses to use the “self-brokering” model to lower costs, to generate residual income and to help end childhood hunger in North America under ACN umbrella. Founded in 1993, ACN was the vision of four entrepreneurs - Greg Provenzano, Robert Stevanovski, Tony Cupisz and Mike Cupisz. TheseCo-Founders had countless years of direct sales experience between them, but

were dissatisfied with other companies and job opportunities they had encountered. They realized that the only way to find a company they wanted to be a part of was to create that company. From that initial paper, a business idea was born that would focus on offer-ing services people need and use every day… services that wouldn’t require anyone to change their buying habits or purchase prod-ucts they didn’t need or couldn’t afford. (Cont. from Page 1) Although no one person can solve all the world’s problems, together we can make the little corner of our world where we live a bit better. Boost your career options… A Reed Executive study shows 94% of employers believe that volun-teering can add to skills. Many of the unemployed will tell you they “can’t afford to volunteer or get involved right now” but the reality is they can’t afford to NOT get involved. New interests, hobbies and expe-riences… Volunteering can give us an escape from the daily routine and help create a balance in our lives. Finding new interests and hobbies can be fun, relaxing, and energizing. It is also a brilliant way to get life experience. Meeting a diverse range of peo-ple… Volunteering brings together people from all backgrounds and

walks of life. Both the recipients of your volunteer efforts and your volunteer partners can be a rich source of inspiration. Volunteering is also an incredible networking opportunity. You can never tell who you will meet or what new information you will learn and what impact this could have on your life. Send a signal to others… People pay attention to your life outside the environment in which they have direct contact with you. Vol-unteering reflects and supports a complete picture of you, and gives real examples of your commit-ment, dedication and interests. Show people what you are pas-sionate about and maybe you will inspire them too! Bear in mind that the most valua-ble skills that anyone can bring to any volunteer effort are compas-sion, an open mind, a willingness to do whatever is needed, and a

positive attitude. Thank you for the positive attitude and willingness to whatever is needed that each of you bring to every event and effort we support as a club. I look forward to flip-ping many a pancake with you this weekend during Buckboard Day! Have a safe week… ~V~

National Alliance on Mental Illness Walk

By Mahmood Bashir This past Saturday, October 11, five KIWIN'S from Goldstone Division started bright and early in the morning to volunteer at the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) walk which was held in down-town Los Angeles. The walk is organized to spread awareness about mental illness, and the need to invest resources to properly care for those effected, including children. In attendance were Wilson Co-Presidents, Lili Labaco and Josephine Tjandra, joined by Goldstone Events-Coordinator Sophia Uemu-ra also from Wilson. Representing Los Altos KIWIN'S were President Victoria Mezack who was joined

by Andrea Zaragoza. Once checked-in at around 8:30 AM our volunteers started their little over a mile long trek to Pershing Square, the water station they were assigned. Along the way they got a chance to see many of the

When the walk started it seemed like there was too much water, but once all said and done there were only two cases left. The volun-teers walked back to the start/finish line at Grand park a little heavier as they had to carry the canopy, some tarps, and other supplies back. Once back at the park around 12:00 PM, the volunteers were treated to a boxed lunch and refreshments, before they headed home around 1:00 PM. They returned back to Hacien-da Heights just before 2:00 PM, feeling a bit tired

PRO RODEO AND OUR SLP

By Dave Wallach This past weekend was the Industry Hills Charity Pro Rodeo. Once again our Kiwanis Club and SLP were in force selling hot pizza, cold drinks and lots of candy. The weekend started at 7am on Friday for the kids. We served slices of pizza along with the soda and candy. Helping out were, Victoria Davidson, Kathy Young, Grace Chen, Lon Salgren, Anna Wu, and Dave Wallach. We had a great time with the kids and sold lots of pizza, soda and candy. We finished at 12:30. Saturday was the opening of the offi-cial rodeo for the paying audience. We started at 3pm and we had help manning the booth from David Malkin, Mahmood Bashir, Anna Wu and Dave Wallach. We also had help from 10 SLP from Wilson Key Club and KIWIN'S. A list of all SLP will be listed in the Kiwaniscope. The students worked in shifts to give everyone a chance to work in the booth. We had great sales and sold out of pizza. You could hear our call of "Hot pizza, cold soda and LOTS of candy". As usual David and Mahmood were working in

Mahmood and David again worked in front of the booth to attract cus-tomers. I can still hear the chant of "Hot pizza, cold soda and LOTS of candy". Once again we had a great time and sold out of pizza, candy and soda. We finished up at 6pm satisfied that we had anoth-er successful booth at the pro rodeo. Our total profit for this weekend after all expenses is $1,496.85.
