Mahmooooo’s Message

Hope everyone had a nice relaxing Labor Day weekend. Labor Day is a celebration of the American labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contribu-tions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. The equiva-lent holiday in Canada, Labor Day, is also celebrated on the first Monday of September just as in the United States. In more than 80 other countries "Labor Day" also known as "International Workers' Day" is observed on May 1. This federal holiday over the

years has become a weekend indi-cating the end of Summer, and many families get together for barbecue's, while many retail out-lets promote huge sales. But lets not forget the real reason Presi-dent Grover Cleavland signed this day to be a national holiday back in 1887, it was to celebrate the many sacrifices the labor move-ment in this country made to im-prove their lives, and the hard work they put in for the well being of our country. Lets always re-member to celebrate with them, and thank them for being a part of improving our lives. Our club has been busy visiting other clubs in our Division. We had three inter-clubs last week, and have an opportunity for sev-eral more this coming week. Thanks to the dedication of Kathy Young who schedules these inter-clubs, and cooperation of

many of members who attend, we have reached our goal of achiev-ing a "Round Robin" already. Now lets do our best to achieve the "Super Round Robin" which we had set as a goal for this year. We need all of our members to attend at least one inter-club this year. All of our members who have not yet attended an inter-club this year are requested to make an attempt to attend one, and help us reach our goal. We can do it, just need your enthusi-asm and a bit of your time. We can all be proud next Mid Year Conference, when the clubs are recognized for inter-clubs and awarded banner patches for their achievements. Lets do this, we can!!!

El Presidente called our meeting, to order at 7:05 AM. Our newest member Wilson Mach, very patrioti-cally led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Izzeldin Osman led the patriotic song; his choice “Star Spangled Ban-ner”. Gino Kwok donning his usual dapper clothes delivered the invocation. Club members in attend-ance were Charlie Huff, Grace Chan, Izzeldin Os-man, Kathy Young, Victoria Davidson, Lon Salgren, Wil-son Mach, David Malkin, Gino Kwok, and Robert Barba. Our guests in attend-ance were Crystal Espinosa President Wilson Key Club who was introduces by Lon Salgren. Paul White from La Puente Club introduced by Wilson Mach, late arrival “Disney Dan”, Dan Stowell from La Puente Club intro-duced by Lon Salgren, and our guest speaker Gloria Mitchell introduced by

Charlie Huff. Victoria Da-vidson led us in a warm rendition of our “Welcome Song”. We acknowledged Garfield Kwon’s upcoming birthday (09/02). Grace Chan led us in the singing of the “Happy Birthday” song. We thanked David & Teri Malkin, Lon Salgren, Charlie Huff, Grace Chan, and Ray Jan for helping out with the pancake breakfast we host-ed for the Senior Pathfind-ers. We also thanked Lon Salgren, Wilson Mach, Rob-ert Barba, Tina Banes, Grace Chan, Susan Jacklin, Kathy Young, Ted & Nancy Strinz, and our SLP for help-ing at a very successful Adopt-A-Highway this month. El Presidente de-layed the most important part of our meeting as long as he could, allowing time for our IP LTG Brad Man-ning to arrive and make a special presentation. Brad did not show up, making El

Presidente happy that he is not the only ones who can be forgetful at times. El Presidente had to make the presentations himself. We presented the Distinguished Club Banner Patch, the Dis-tinguished President Pin to David Malkin, and the Dis-tinguished Secretary Pin to Kathy Young. It was a proud moment for all in attendance. Thank You David and Kathy for your continued Distinguished Service to our club, our communities and our youth. David Malkin sold the “Split the Pot” tickets; a winning ticket was pulled by Crystal declaring El Presidente as the winner of $100.00 ($10.00) Kiwanis Dollars. El Presidente donated the winnings to Wilson Key Club. Victoria Davidson performed the pin & badge checks, and helped collect cans for Del Haven. Kathy Young circulated our dona-

tion cans. We collected $4.00 for Children’s Hospi-tal, $3.00 for Relay for Life, and $4.00 for ELIMINATE. A total of $27.00 was contrib-uted by generous members for Happy/Sad dollars. WE then presented Gino Kwok our clubs 50th Year Pin. El Presidente reminded every-one who still has not re-ceived the pin to attend a meeting and we will be glad to present it. El Preidente rang the bell at 8:15 AM, at which time the meeting was adjourned as we sang “Hail to Kiwanis”. Thank you all for attending our meeting and making it fun. Story by David Malkin Gloria Mitchell is a second-generation bail agent and has been working in the bail industry for over 20 years. Following in the footsteps of her mother, Gloria

received her bail license and has owned her own bail business, Gloria Mitchell Bail Bonds in Pomona, CA, for the past 15 years. What makes Gloria such a wonderful bail agent is not the work she does every day in her office, but more importantly the work she does every day outside her office. For the past several years, Gloria has worked with Soroptimist International in Puente Hills, CA and more recently with the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club in Hacienda Heights, CA. Through her work with these groups, as a member and past President of Soroptimist, she saw an unique opportunity to branch off and work with teen-age mothers. Gloria created a program called "Tea for You" (Teen parents Excelling through Adversities). She works closely with teachers and students from fifteen Cal-SAFE Schools to provide resources and support for pregnant teens and teen mothers. The organization holds a special a day each May (and has for the past 5 years) to provide these teen girls an opportunity to experience a high tea luncheon with women who were also teen mothers. They get a chance to share stories and experiences of how these women have continued on to become professionals in business. Gloria is completely com-mitted to the success of this program. According to Gloria, “I see bright futures in these girls and with the help of Soroptimist Scholarship Program and support from the surrounding business and Hacienda Heights Kiwanis, we can encourage them to stay in school, and continue on to higher edu-cation. To date over $45,000 in scholarships has been given of which Hacienda Heights Kiwanis has funded over $3,000 dollars. Ultimately we want them to use their adversities as stepping-stones to reach their goals. By building strength and confidence and never giving up they will improve their lives and the lives their children.”

August 23rd, 2014

By Lon Salgren We had a good turnout of Kiwanis members for this month's AAH. Also it was perfect weather, being much cooler than just a few days prior. Kiwanis members in attendance were Tina Banes, Robert Bar-ba, Mahmood Bashir, Grace Chan, Susan Jacklin, Wilson Mach, Lon Salgren, Ted & Nancy Strinz (honorary) and Kathy Young. Our SLP (Service Leadership Program) youth were represented by Maharsh Patel, Brendon Huong and Ronald Chanes of Los Altos Key Club, Jade Wong, of Glen A Wilson KIWIN'S, Parvene Barimani, Dylan Tran, Austin Ly, Cynthia Chan, Andrew Wong, Alison Liu and Crystal Espinosa of Glen A Wilson Key Club. We assembled into our groups. Robert Barba and I each took a group to Countrywood and Colima. My group went West to Azusa, his went East. My group (Parvene, Cynthia and Jade) began cleaning and when we got to the intersection to cross Countrywood Parvene came up to me with her bag and a look of shock and horror. She said they had found 3 bullet shells. I too thought i'd picked up one from the gutter. We each dug through our bags to examine our finds. I can't distinguish between a 9mm, 44 or 45 caliber shell, but indeed she had collected 3 shell casings. Mine turned out to be a 1/4" drive socket. We continued on our route. When we got to the flood control wash on the north side of the street we discovered that a work crew had opened the normally locked chain link gate and was working in the wash cutting up bushes with a chain saw. We took advantage of the open gate and collected trash in what is normally no-man's land. We collected roughly 125 of the 578 cigarette butts in just this area. When we returned we totaled the count of butts and had collected a total or 1,644. Not bad for a cou-ple of hours labor! Thanks to everyone that came out to participate in our monthly AAH Community Service Project.

KIWIN’S Goldstone DCM

August 30th, 2014 By Lon Salgren Mahmood Bashir, Dave Wallach and I cooked hamburgers for the KIWIN'S at their DCM at Cortez Park in West Covina. The DCM ran from 10AM-1PM. Lunch consisted of hamburger, chips and drink. We served them at noon. Before lunch they had a park cleanup for about a half hour.

By: Ansel Deng of Goldstone KIWIN’S, Glen A. Wilson This August 30th was the August Divisional Council Meeting (DCM), a monthly gathering of Goldstone Division school clubs to report their past accomplishments as well as their future plans. Damien, Glen A. Wilson, Los Altos, Chaffey, and St. Lucy’s showed up to the DCM and shared their upcoming plans. This event was memorable because it was my first DCM, and I received a lollipop. Because there were many new members brought to this DCM, many from Chaffey, they were invited to learn the Kiwanis “We Feel Good” chant led by Lt. Governor Kelley Ray and the school presidents. After the DCM and paying for the burgers for lunch, we were told to form small groups for the park cleanup. We were handed tools to help pick up trash and a trash bag; we spent about 30 minutes scouring for trash around the park, when we decided to help set up a party for a lady, who was organ-izing the party for her two children. My group (Sophia, Isaiah, and Sylvia, and I) helped hang up decora-tions, and many other Goldstone members came to help blow up inflatable animals and set the tables. When everyone returned from picking up trash, Kelley Ray led some icebreakers and games until the burgers were done. The games were my favorite part of the DCM; we tossed water balloons to each other, at each other, and had a great time. In addition to the water balloons, we also blew up balloons and tied them around our ankles. The purpose of the game was both to evade others’ trying to pop your balloons and to attempt to step on others’ balloons. In the end, when I tried to form a temporary alliance with Jessica Chang of Los Altos, I was betrayed and my balloon was stepped on. The lunch was fulfilling, and after lunch was the pie-ing of Lili Labaco, Mr. Bashir, Mr. Wallach, Daniel Rivera, and Kelley Ray. It was funny to see everyone get pie-ed, but it was more impactful that each $2 would help raise funds for Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). We ended the day with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge taken on by Lili and Kelley, in which I got to hold one of the buckets. Although this was my first DCM, I do have a passion for KIWIN’S that I hope will burgeon even more with every event I attend; I am looking forward to a rare combination that KIWIN’S offers—fun activi-ties, but an even greater cause behind the fun.
