Mahmooooo’s Message

Our K-Family can be pretty in-spirational. We read about all the wonderful things so many Kiwanians and our SLP are doing all over the world. Giving back is a way of life, and most of us Kiwanians certainly have made it our way of life. Making a difference, and going out of our way to serve and improve our communities is second na-ture to us. A good friend re-cently posted a inspirational thought on Face Book. The gift of her post is paraphrased here. As we go about our day,

we do so many small things every day, and don't even real-ize we are helping and making a difference. Be it holding the door open for someone, pick-ing up trash, putting some-one else's shopping cart away, letting an elderly person go through the check-out lines before us. If someone asked us the ques-tion, "What did you do today to help?" these acts wont even cross our minds, because to most of us, this to us is just leading a life filled with good-ness. When someone asks us for help, we rarely say no, and seriously consider going out of our way to oblige. Our club is unique in a way, we don't serve within determined geo-graphical boundaries, we are always eager to help everyone,

regardless. We reach out and assist other Kiwanis Clubs, and organizations, almost every time an opportunity presents itself. It is a quality worth stick-ing to. Here are a few great parting words to live by: Work for a cause, not ap-plause. Live life to express, not to im-press. Don't strive to make your pres-ence noticed, just make your absence felt.

Remember to serve, and al-ways serve with a smile

To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.

To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Hallelujah! El Presidente was on time, and the meeting was to order at 7:00 AM. David Malkin led us in the Pledge of Al-legiance. Grace Chan led the patriotic song, “America the Beautiful”. Dave Wallach delivered the invocation. Club mem-bers in attendance were Dave W, Charlie Huff, Izzey Osman, Kathy Young, Grace Chan, David Malkin, Victoria Davidson, Lon Salgren, Anna Wu, Craig Cerro, and Maureen Sinclair. Our guests were introduced, David Malkin introduced Scott Duncan, Charlie Huff introduced Brad Manning, Anna Wu introduced her bundle of joy baby Kyra, and Lon Salgren introduced Nikki

Acuna. Victoria Davidson led us in the singing of our “Welcome Song”. We acknowledged Nancy Strinz’s Birthday (05/09), and Craig & Debbie Cerro’s 27th anniversary. Dave W led the “Happy Birthday & Happy Anniver-sary” song. El Presidente tried not to mention his Birthday (05/11), but Kathy was wide eyed and bushy tailed this morning, and reminded everyone of it, so Dave led us in the “Happy Birthday” song again. Thanks Kathy! Lon sold the “Split the Pot” tickets. Our guest Nicki pulled the winning ticket and Lon (Yes again!!!) was the winner taking home a whopping $130 Kiwanis dollar ($13). He in the true

Kiwanis spirit generously donated part of his win-nings to our collection cans. Maureen checked for pins and badges, and collected food cans for Del Haven. Izzey circulated the donation cans. We collected $4.00 for Relay for Life, $4.00 for Chil-dren’s Hospital, and $7.00 for ELIMINATE. A total of $60.00 was contributed by generous members and guests for Happy/Sad dol-lars. El Presidente was our “Mr. K”; a few failed to shake his hand, even though he provided ample opportunities while hand-ing out the agendas for everyone to do so. Honor system was invoked, and those who failed to shake his hand, generously do-

nated to the collection can of their choice, except Kathy, the bearer of the “No Fines Badge”. Lon was really tired, and did not want to stand up while addressing El Presidente, and willingly donated a few dollars to the can of his choice. An amazing show of generosity and positive attitude by our members, for having fun and contributing all at the same time. Way to go Lon!! El Presidente rang the bell at 8:15 AM, at which time the meeting was adjourned as we sang “Hail to Kiwanis”. Thanks everyone! Submitted by: Kathy Young & Mahmood Bashir

Happy & Sad Dollars

Happy & Sad Dollars 4/30/2013 Dave W – Happy that Ribfest was a success. We had lots of help from the Youth and visiting SLP’s. Thanks to Blanca and Phil for all the help they gave preparing the serving area and all the behind the scenes tasks they performed. Lon – Happy that Ribfest was a success even though there were some bumps in the road. We adjust well to challenges and make the best of them. Brad – Happy that we will be providing a Pancake Breakfast for San Dimas Little League on Saturday. Hap-py that Ribfest was spectacular and even happier be-cause he won the I-Pad Mini. Real surprise when his name was called. Brad, just Brad! Nikki – Happy that West Covina Kiwanis with the help of our club will be providing a Pancake Breakfast to San Dimas Little League as her son plays there. Charlie – Happy that the problems he has been having for the past couple of years have now been referred to the US Justice Dept. Hopefully will be solved very soon. Grace – Happy because she has never baked a potato before and learned how to do it the Sunday of Ribfest. Izzey – Happy was able to donate cart for Ribfest. It was a big hit. David M – Happy that Ribfest is over. Happy that West Covina is Inter-Clubbing with us this morning. Happy that Anna is doing a fantastic job with the Kiwa-niscope, and Sad that one of the Senior Pathfinders Members was in a terrible accident. Scott – Happy that the Law Enforcement Academy had been given the opportunity to help out at Rifest. Sad

because 2 Cadets had to be dropped from the pro-gram, because of breaking a morality clause in the con-tract. Craig – Happy that Ribfest was a success and Happier for his 27th Anniversary. Anna – Happy that Ribfest was a success. Also that Kyra slept 7 ½ hours after the event. She was really tired. Happy, that the Kiwaniscope is growing and that everyone likes it. Mahmood – Happy to have Scott, Brad, and Nikki join us. Happy and proud of all our members. It was their hard work which made the Ribfest successful. With everyone’s help we were able to take care of all the glitches, and make it work. Happy that Anna is taking on the ELIMINATE project and has some great ideas to fundraise and save lives. Students en-gage in rigorous physical and academic training. All stu-dents must maintain a 3.0GPA and will be put on probation with a GPA of 2.0-2.9. They must be able to maintain a 3.0 in Physical Education with a 10-minute mile. Senior Pathfinders Celebrate Mothers’ Day The Kiwanian Way

Story by David Malkin The Rowland Heights Senior Pathfinders celebrated Mothers’ Day on Friday with a pancake breakfast. With the help of the men of the senior group, which included David Malkin of the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club, about 40 senior ladies, including Grace Chan, also a member of the Hacienda Heights Club, were served breakfast. The mothers’ were treated to pancakes, sau-sages, eggs, cake, orange juice and coffee. At the breakfast we were all treated to a surprise visitor, Anna Wu and Kyra, from our Kiwanis Club. This was a special surprise since it was Anna’s first Mothers’ Day cele-bration. The Kiwanis Club would have been very proud of the men of the Rowland Heights Senior Pathfind-ers.
