Those who are carrying the organization are often so good and selfless at what they do, others hardly no-tice… Until one day, they’re gone. Twas the night before Christmas, when all of the staff Sat around hoping a leader would come, on their behalf. Tired of the power model still in the air, They hoped a servant lead-er, soon would be there. There had been no focus on long-term success, And Short-term driv-ers too long caused distress. While some struggled for a solu-

tion, others had fled, We needed a change before going in the red. Then amongst the board there arose such a clatter, “Ego-based leaders” they said, “no longer matter.” “We’ve ousted the selfish, greedy narcissists, Replaced them with servant leaders, here to assist.” Ego’s torn, pride drowned, the power leaders walked out, Their golden parachutes and bonuses now in doubt. Then, what to my wondering eyes should appear, ot whom we ex-pected, but one we all held dear. One who was humble, his concerns were sincere, We knew right then, our servant leader was here. His demeanor was calm, though his message strong: “We’ve got much that’s broken, so the road will be long.”

“Now finance, accounting and back-office teams, we’ll focus on the future, sustainability our theme. As for the front-office, say to our customers, we’re focused on suc-cess, for all our stake holders.” He asked for concerns from the group all around, listening for hours, until no more fears were found. He sought out solutions, volun-teers and experts, “I’ve not all the answers, and count on your efforts” As the night wore on, we grew less tired, As the future looked bright-er, we grew more inspired. We were no longer feeding egos, pride and greed, But building

Story by David Malkin The Hacienda Kiwanis Club was honored this week to have as our guest speaker Maj Diana Arnold, RD. Maj Arnold is a registered dietician and joined the Army nine (9) years ago at the age of 46. The Army will make individual exceptions to the upper age limit for individuals who are interested in the medical profes-sional services in the Army. Maj Arnold’s presentation was, “Fast Times in Arifjan – My Middle East Deployment”, titled after her first de-ployment to Camp Arifjan in the Middle East. Prior to her deployment she went to training in Washington, California and Texas. After saying her good-byes, she was off to Kuwait, a 27-hour flight, for her first stop. Kuwait, located between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and home to Camp Arifjan. Maj Arnold was the only dietician in the Middle East. She was assigned to the 349th Combat Baton, but pro-vided services throughout the Middle East. While in the Middle East she conducted 70 classes including yoga, spinning, Zumba, Crossfit, dancing and nutrition and served 1,500 patients. She held health fairs, “Biggest Loser” contests, and served on the Food Service Menu Board (FSMB) to approve menus. Healthy eating and exercise were her focus to prevent weight gain while in the service. This was in addition to many long jogs and marathons. Her living quarters were mainly small rooms in what use to be long, narrow trailers that were originally used to haul goods. Wind driven sand was a constant, and temperatures between 110 and 140 not unusual. Maj Ar-nold’s dress code on duty was ACU (Army Combat Uniform) and while off duty no sleeveless garments, one-piece swimsuits only, no midriff showing and nothing tight or extreme. After a very difficult and long journey home via Qatar and Germany, Maj Arnold awaits to be called up again. She continues to keep busy going to classes to keep her skills current. We thanked Maj. Diana Arnold for coming to our meeting, for sharing her experiences with our club, and most important for her service to our country that allows us to exercise our freedoms.

But the message was clear for all to observe: If you want to lead here, you had first to serve. “Leaders won’t focus on fame, or their name in lights they will have busy days, large loads and long nights. “They’ll focus instead on all our stake holders, putting other names in lights and magazine covers.” The message hit home clearly, as we all knew, By serving others, we’d increase revenue. Leaders would focus on staff, who’d impress our customers, And with happy customers, we’d please investors. Serving to lead, the paradox for success, That Christmas Eve our Servant leader did impress. Inspired we left, with challenges ahead, A long road yes, but we’d be servant-led My head spun with excitement, as I called my wife. She asked “What’d that boss do now, give you more strife?” I answered “We’ve a new boss and one we deserve. We finally got it – to lead means to serve.” Have a safe week…. ~V~

By Sarah Yee, Los Altos Key Club People of all ages gathered together to work on floats that would later see the parade road. Everybody was a part of putting the floats together, whether pruning flowers or gluing on little details. Although the shift was from the morning to the afternoon, it was never tiring for the volunteers to have fun through it all. The atmosphere of the place was alive, as everybody worked as hard as they could. Stu-dents, adults, crew members, advisers, all worked as one to make the Rose Floats beautiful. The talk about the work done to the floats never ended. During lunch and breaks, all you heard was the effort to put everything together, like sanding bark or applying glue to every corner. It was all worth it. This year is one of the most special to Kiwanis. It was the centennial proud organization. The Kiwanis float represents the year of celebration for the volunteers. The Rose Float was an experience that can never be forgotten .

By Meghan Hernandez, Wilson KIWIN’S Co-Historian “HEY KIWIN’S? “ “YEAH?” “HOW DO YOU FEEL?” Over the course of Fall Rally, we were asked this question multiple times. It was a great way to our show spirit and passion for KIWIN’S and PTP. Fall Rally is an annual event where all of KIWIN’S across California, come together to raise money and awareness for the Pediatric Trauma Program. Throughout the day Fall Rally consisted of spirit battles, icebreakers, and the hectic Penny Wars. Fall

Rally also raised money by auctioning off our District Board members, which they were later pied in the face with shaving cream. Each division went crazy with spirit, but in the end only one division is award-ed with the spirit stick. The Divisions are judged by creativity of their cheers, how loud they are, and sportsmanship. This year, the spirit stick was award-ed to the Goldstone Division. They were full of con-tent and fulfillment because they worked so hard to get this special award. The President of Glen A. Wil-son KIWIN’S, Lili Anne Labaco exclaims, “Fall Rally 2014 is one for the books. The best part wasn’t win-

ning the stick or hearing our division get called, but watching all of Goldstone cheer their hearts out and watching all of us work together to obtain our goal. We wanted this for so long and we finally got it, because no matter our size, each individual cheered until their throats got hoarse. Like that quote goes, ‘If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.’ And Goldstone definitely went far.” Fall Rally did not just focus on spirit, it also recognized key members in KIWIN’S. For ex-ample our very own KIWIN’S member was award-ed “Outstanding Divisional Member,” Noah Basit. He comments, “My experience at Fall Rally was outstanding, I would define it as my KIWIN’S mo-ment, being there to represent Goldstone! I had fun with friends, met new people, and helped raise funds to become an Ohana. It felt great to receive an award for ‘Outstanding Divisional Member,’ made my experience at Fall Rally a bo-nus!”

Adopt-A-Highway December 6th, 2014

By Lon Salgren This month was our first actual AAH in the new FIRST Saturday of the month time slot. Last month should have been, but was rained out. We had a great turn out of our sponsored youth. Wilson KI-WIN’S were represented by Josephine Tjandra, Aaron Zepeda, Noah Basit, Victor Chavez, Victoria Kuang, Jade Wong, Oarie Lee and Jin Chang. Wilson Key Club was represented by Sibastien Delgado, Dylan Tran, Min Wong, Melanie Yu and Ken Liu. Newton Builders Club was represented by Faculty Advi-sor Ms. Kammert, Lisette Pelayo, Nathan Pelayo, Enrique Nieto, Steven Lopez, Phillip Padilla, Jacob Cor-ral. Daniel Elizondo, Leslie Santos, Joali Torrico, Raven Vejar, Kassandra Escobedo, Genevie Avila, Ange-la Un. Arthur Lin, Principal Dr. Lin and a parent. Kiwanis members included Grace Chan, Izzeldin Osman and myself. We also had the help of Ted Strinz. It was a mild 64 degrees when we began and warmed up to 70 by the time we concluded. My group covered the area from Countrywood eastward to Azusa and back. This is a fertile area for collecting trash, especially cigarette butts in front of the shops at Azusa and Colima. The KIWIN’S and Key Club-bers in my group collected a total of 468 cigarette butts. Izzy’s group covered the area from Country-wood westward to Punta Del Este. I was surprised to hear that their group collected 464 butts. The Builders Clubbers covered the area from base camp west along Colima to Camino Del Sur. Ted Strinz

led a group from base camp east. Thanks to Grace for keeping base camp secure for us. Unfortunately I don’t have a count for the cigarette butts collected by the other groups. Thanks to everyone that came out to help on this community service pro-ject cleaning Colima Road of trash and preventing it from enterint the storm drain system and pollute the beaches.

By Austin Ly, Key Club member from Wilson, D35W Event Coordinator Candidates Training Conference was an amazing chance for me to grow as a Leader. Over the course of seven hours I had learned things I had not known before, both the responsibilities and honor of being a Lieutenant Governor. This had made me realize what it truly means to become a Lieutenant Governor. Working with the current LTG's gave me insight on the daily life and all of the hard work they do. It had quickly become a very inspirational day for me. We all were able to share our stories about Key Club and the good it has brought us. I was able to learn about some of the reasons why my fellow Key Clubbers joined this club, it made me real-ize that Key Club is not just a club, it is a way of life. It helps connect High Schoolers all over the world.

New Aktion Club December 6th, 2014

By Anna Wu On Saturday, December 6th, the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis club spon-sored a new Aktion Club at the Foundation for Disabled Youth. Lt. Governor Mahmood Bashir was there to install the new club and it’s new officers. Also there representing the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis club was Past President David Malkin and his wife Teri Malkin, New Aktion club advisor Ray Jan, President-elect Anna Wu. The event was in conjunction with the FFDY’s Holiday party. There was lots of food and signing, everyone was very joyful and excited for this new club formation. The new Aktion club’s president is Amy, pictured below ringing her new bell. A Little bit about AKTION clubs Aktion Club is the only service club for adults with disabilities, with more than 12,000 members worldwide. Aktion Clubs draw members from various organizations that support individuals with disabilities, as well as other community programs. Aktion clubs can also be established at churches, libraries, YMCAs, lodges or similar facilities. A Kiwanis club, composed of like-minded, service-oriented people from the community, serves as the club’s sponsor.

Turkey Trot

By Allie Chang, Wilson KIWIN'S Co-Historian Gobble Gobble. It was that time of the year again. The sign-up sheets go up. Asking your friends which shift to sign up for. It was time for our annual Turkey Trot, which is basically a race around the Puente Hills Mall parking lot. The shifts were Friday 5-7pm, Saturday 10-2am, Sunday 6-12am. KIWIN’S and Key Club members all came out to help run our annual Turkey Trot. Each shift had a different task to do. The Friday shift was in charge of making the runners bags. They had to assemble an assembly line and fill up all the bags with goodies. The bags were filled with granola bars, juic-es, bio freeze sample packets, and Advil. The Saturday shift was in charge of setting up the Tur-key Trot. They had to set up tables in the parking lot where the Pancake Breakfast was going to be. They also had to set the cones around the parking lot to mark off where the people were running. The Sunday shift had to host and help out at the actual Turkey Trot. They had to main-tain the pancake breakfast and make sure that the race ran smoothly. Jaclyn Chin, a member of Glen A. Wilson KIWIN’S, shares her experience saying, “I was very excited to attend my 2nd an-nual Turkey Trot. Not only did I reunite with my old friends but I got to bond with the new KI-WIN’S members. Besides meeting and talking to new friends, I also got to help serve my commu-

nity. I always look for-ward to attend-ing the annual Turkey Trot.”
