“Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going onm with all the wis-dom that experi-

ence can instill in us. Cheers to a new year and an-other chance to get it right.” ~Oprah Winfrey

According to Health.com, on January 1st, one in three Ameri-cans vowed to make changes that would better their lives. About 75 percent of those peo-ple are still on target today, a mere 12 days later, but that figure drops to less than 50 per-cent by July. So does that mean making resolutions is just a waste of time and energy; a plan for failure? Or is it an op-

portunity for us to assess where we are today and where we would like to be in the future and take the steps necessary to make that happen? Imagine if in August, 1914 Allen S. Browne had not walked into Joseph G. Prance’s tailor shop in Detroit, Michigan to meet with him about organizing a fraternal group of business and professional men. Imagine if they had settled for the status quo and not chased after the possibilities. Six months later, would there have been a corpo-rate charter issued for Kiwanis or would they have been con-tent with belonging to a Moose Lodge? In 1919, would the membership have been able to raise the $17,500 in less than an hour to buy the organization’s

independence? Would Key Clubs been developed in 1925? Would Circle K been established in 1947? What did you resolve to accom-plish this year? What are you working to improve? Where do you see our club going in 2015? Take a few moments and set a goal for yourself, your family and your K-family. Then share them with the rest of us so we can support you in accomplish-ing those goals and being part of the 50 percent still “on track” in July. In the meantime, have a safe week…. ~V~

Story by David Malkin Our guest speaker this week was Chris Sanchez, Community Events Specialist with the American Red Cross. The Red Cross gets no State or Federal funding. All of their funds come from donations when an emergency strikes. Volunteers are their backbone. Chris gave a very informative presentation on how to be prepared for an emergency. In addition to a table display and “goodie bags” with information, Chris explained what we should do now so we will be prepared when and if an emergency should occur. She explained that we are our own first responder in an emergency situation, not the fire or police de-partment who may not be able to respond in a timely manner. Everyone should have a six-month supply of water. You should know how to turn off the gas to your house, but NEVER turn it back on without an authorized individual present. Everyone needs a “Grab and Go” back-pack with: utility rope, plastic sheet that can also serve as a ground cover or tent or privacy shield, Swiss Army knife, medications, whistle and flashlight, dehydrated food, solar radio, water purification pills and a good pair of shoes just to name a few of the items. Chris explained one of the Red Cross’s special programs, Family Links Program. When a conflict or disaster strikes, families can become separated with no way of contacting each other. When they do not know where to turn the International Family Tracing Services can help. Free of charge, these services give families separat-ed by armed conflict or disaster a way to restore contact. The program includes:

Locating missing loved ones

Exchanging family messages

Making family welfare inquires during and after disasters overseas

Making health and welfare inquiries about family members around the world in non-disaster times

Securing travel documents from the International Committee of the Red Cross to reunite separated family members

Providing information and referral services when another agency can better meet a particular need. Finally, Chris also told us about the Red Cross Veterans’ History Project. In October 2000, The United States Congress unanimously voted for legislation to create the Veterans History Project (VHP) at the American Folk-

By Dave Wallach In the month of December 8000 gallons of glue was be used on the fourteen floats at the Rosemont Pavilion. We had 7000 volunteers from our Builders Clubs, KIWINS, Key Club, Circle K, Aktion Clubs, Kiwanians, and Community. A total of 56000 hours of volunteering in the month of December. This year we had volunteers from 29 different states. This is the single largest community service project in all of Kiwanis International. This year we again provided 15 meals sponsored by Kiwanis Clubs and Divisions for 500 volunteers per shift. This year our own Division 35 fed 668 volunteers in under 30 minutes. Once again the dinner was provided by Casa Blanca Mexican Restaurant. Our Division provided 21 volunteers to assist with the feeding. The 2015- Tournament of Roses Theme was "Inspiring Stories ". The 2015- Kiwanis International Rose Float was " 100 Years Inspiring Children". The name of our float tied together the Tournament's theme and Kiwanis International's mission to serve the children of the world as we celebrate 100 years of Ki-wanis. The Grand Marshall of the parade was WW II POW and 1936 Olympian Louis Zamperini. Unfortunately

Mr. Zamperini passed away on July 2, 2014 at the age of 97. He is also the subject matter for the movie-"Unbroken". Mr. Zamperini was represented by family members at the parade.

This year's Kiwanis International Rose Float carried 16 Riders. Those riders included: International

President-John Button, 1st Lady Debbie Button, Kiwanis International Foundation President Bob Par-ton and Donna, their 3 grandchildren Faith (11), Noah (6), and Bela (6), Circle K International Presi-dent Kathy Le, Key Club International President Marie Palazzolo, CNH Governor Alan Guire, Byron Montilla Circle K Governor, Allan Pham KIWIN’S District Treasurer, Jaqueline Tsang Key Club Gover-

Phoenix Decorating, our float builders, once again donated $8000.00 to the Service Leadership Pro-gram Scholarships and $2000.00 to the Kiwanis International Rose Float Project. The entire project was a huge success and we have already begun work on the 2015 Kiwanis International Rose Float. This float will help us celebrate 100 years of Kiwanis. The new float has been selected and next month I will be able to reveal the new theme and our new float. Thank you to all of our members for your continued help. I especially want to thank Vern Moyer and Phil Hinojos, from the La Puente Industry Club and our own Lon Salgren for all the hours they spent at the float site and continued support.

Kiwanis Community Service Project: Adopt-a-Highway January 11, 2015

By Lon Salgren Despite the threat of inclement weather and actual drops of liquid sunshine appearing just before we began AAH, we had a great turnout of our SLP (Service Leadership Program) youth. There was a total of 39 youth and adult volunteers that came to help. Our Kiwanis Club was represented by Grace Chen, President Victoria Davidson, Honor-ary Member Ted Strinz and myself. Los Altos Key Club was represent-ed by Valeria Wang, Judy Chen, Katlyn Eng, Crystal Rivas and Connie Puny. Los Altos KIWIN’S was represented by Victoria Mezack and Bryce Olivas. Glen A Wilson KIWIN’S was represented by Sylvia Kwon, Noah Basil, Aaron Zepeda, Leanne DeLeon, Derrick Khousavath, Jason Chan, Kalvin Chang, Victoria Kuong, Joshua Lee, Phillip Cheung. Glen A Wilson Key Club was represented by Keyi Zhou. Rowland Key Club was represented by Janis Shin and Leonard Shin. Newton Builder’s Club was represented by Kassandra Escobedo, Jennifer Rodas, Justin Wang, Enrique Nieto, Hugo Escobedo, Kim Lee, Evangeline Lin, Jacob Corsal, Phillip Padilla and Nicholas Castillo and Faculty Advisor Brialle Kam-mert. Orange Grove Builder’s Club was represented by Amber Tee and Faculty Co-Advisor Samantha Higbee. Unfortunately once again we lacked enough Kiwanis members to transport and chaperone the youth at AAH. This can partially be ex-plained because this month’s AAH coincided with the Key Club Region 13 Conclave where they elect their new LTG. We split the youth into a group of 6 that I transported to Azusa Rd. to clean the eastern end of the area we are responsible for. The remaining youth and adults were

split into two groups and headed west and east from base camp. As I mentioned before this month’s AAH was conducted with the threat of rain. Actually it started raining lightly just before we began. I refused to call it rain, calling it “liquid sunshine” instead. I re-minded all the participants that it is important to collect the trash this day before it has a chance to be washed into the storm drain system and show up at the beach next week when it is 70 degrees and we want to enjoy the beach. The light rain did not last long, so we were able to conclude the AAH before the heavier rain appeared at noon. I got special satisfaction by collecting trash just at the en-trance to the storm drains more than a few times. Gotcha! My group was collected 1,068 cigarette butts. Grace reported that another group had reported 148 cigarette butts collected. Thank you to everyone that came out to support this Kiwanis Community Service project.

Newton Builders Club Meeting 12/18/14

Service Leadership Program

By Lon Salgren The Builders Club at Newton Middle School held their last meeting before the Holiday break on 12/18/14. They had held a toy drive on campus. They collected 67 toys for to be donated to those less fortunate. This included a case of 36 remote control UFO flying saucers. They discussed ideas for future projects (beautification project on campus, blankets of love, helping the homeless and beach cleanup when the weather warms up). I shared pictures with them of the progress on our Kiwanis Rose Parade float and told them that our next Adopt-a-Highway project would be on January 10th, 2015. I also told them our Kiwanis Club would be planning a Kiwanis One day project which should take place in April. After the meeting was adjourned they passed out snacks of chips, candy canes and Capri Sun. We moved outside to load the toys and more cans they collected into my van and took pictures. They have added weekly lunch meetings on Tuesdays to their regularly scheduled third Thursday of the month after-school meeting. Their next meeting will be January 6th, 10:48-11:26 AM in Ms. Kammert’s room. I dropped the toys off at the County Fire Station on Gale Ave., then delivered the canned food to DelHaven Com-munity Center.

By Anna Wu On New Year’s Eve, December 31st, 2014, David Malkin, Teri Malkin, Anna Wu, Richard Lee, Mahmood Bashir, John Hsu, Ray Jan, and numerous Key Club and KIWIN’S members celebrated New Year’s Eve together at YES Plaza for a “Living with Compassion” Non-profit event and fundraiser. Hacienda Heights Kiwanis was there to raise money for Project Eliminate. On this cold cold evening, Hacienda Heights Kiwanis sold hot Star-bucks coffee, hot chocolate, and hot red bean soup. The event was lots of fun and a success! Some of the other non-profits in attendances were the Tsu Chi Foundation, STC Foundation, Rotary, Lions, American Red Cross, and FFDY.
