To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.

To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Story by David Malkin Like a pitcher in baseball pitching a perfect game, Charlie Huff has a perfect record for meetings with speakers. This week’s speaker was unable to attend today’s meeting, and with little or no notice, Charlie had to call in his backup. To the rescue came Tim Seal, CEO Delhaven Community Center and a long time friend of the Hacien-da Heights Kiwanis Club. Tim Seal, besides being the CEO of Delhaven, is also the incoming President of the Industry Hills Rotary Club. The Rotary Club of Industry Hills was chartered in 1930. It has been meeting at the Pacific Palms Resort on Tuesdays at 12:10PM since the hotel originally opened as a Sheraton. Rotary, Tim Seal and Delhaven are in-terwoven in Tim’s daily routine and you cannot talk about one without mentioning the other. He also wel-comes the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club into his life by supporting Izzeldin Osman, membership one of his long time employees, as a member of our club. Tim first gave a brief update on his involvement with Rotary. Their recent golf tournament generated $23,000. Their club sponsors an Interact Club at Wilson High School. Rotary has recently initiated Satellite Clubs as a way to generate increase membership, similar to what Kiwanis has done. Currently they have 6 la-dies in their Satellite club who are currently planning a movie night at Delhaven and a day at the spa. As a grass roots agency founded in the City of La Puente in 1972, Delhaven is dedicated to the strengthening of human life through social, educational, and recreational leisure time activities in a structured and supervised setting. Currently Delhaven is coordinating a Day Treatment program for 110 developmental disabled individ-uals, an after school program for 150 students and a Summer Camp for 150 kids. In addition to these activities Tim’s mother, and founder of Delhaven, continues to take kids on trips. This year they will be going to Tahoe. In past years they have visited New Orleans, Washington D.C., Wisconsin, and Hawaii. They also continue to give scholarships to local students each year.

Delhaven is working with the local YMCA to take over several of their activities:

1. Resource Center at Bassett School District 2. Los Robles After School program.

The Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club also sponsors an Aktion Club at Del-haven. Tim plans to have the Aktion Club member to participate in our Club’s Adopt A Highway (AAH) program starting August 23rd. Delhaven is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Consequently, they have many fundraisers to generate funds to support their many programs. In the planning stage are: Annual Car Wash (July 18th), a basketball game for over 35, pay it forward for community activities, and the Pro Rodeo 2nd weekend in October. Recently Delhaven lost their support from Hacienda La Puente Adult Education for donations of paper goods. They are looking for a new sponsor for paper goods. A family that utilized Delhaven for their family members named Delahven to inherit a house for their use. Tim plans to use the house to supplement the other house they have in Chino to house some of their DD Individuals on a 24 hour bases with full time support living their.

There are many opportunities at Delhaven Community Center to help with their programs:

Donating money needed to keep our program costs low so ALL people can participate.

Sponsor a child or a program.

By Mahmood Bashir On Saturday July 12, Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley hosted its annual Interfaith Iftar Dinner, at the newly remodeled mosque in Rowland Heights. As many may know Muslims all around the world are currently are observing the month of Ramadan. During this celebrated month, Muslims "fast" from before sunrise to sun-set, and Iftar is when the fast is broken. Traditionally Muslims break their fast with a "date", say their prayers, and then eat din-ner. This years Ramadan Interfaith Iftar was a huge success, and well attended by community members. Our club was represented by President Mahmood Bashir. There were many governmental representatives in attendance as guests, including Congressman Ed Royce, and Congresswoman Judy Chu, both of whom ad-dressed the guests in attendance. Also in attendance was Saba Hafeez, representing "Insan Foundation". Saba has attended sev-eral of our meetings, and our members and our SLP have helped the foundation by volunteering their time to deliver & serve meals to the homeless. Keynote addresses on Interfaith and fasting were delivered by Ms. Estee Chandler (JVP-LA) offering the Jewish per-spective. Christian perspective was addressed by Mr. Abel E. Lopez (Church of the Messiah), and the Islamic perspective was handled by ICSGV Religious Director Sheikh Said Seddouk. The whole affair was elegantly done, and enjoyed by all. The food was delicious, and the gathering of community was simply awe-some. All are encouraged to attend next year.

By David Malkin La Puente has a new store, one that is very familiar to Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club, and other non-profits, Smart and Final Extra. Smart and Final Extra is a valuable resource to non-profits who have various fundraisers involving food, drinks and support items. The go to place is usually Smart and Final. At the VIP grand opening and ribbon cutting was the Greater San Gabriel Valley Chamber of Commerce and several of its Board members, including David Malkin, and its Past President Ben Su, and current Hacienda Heights Kiwanis members Charles Karsch from the Boys and Girls Club and representatives for John Hsu and STC Management. The various ven-dors that supply Smart and Final Extra with products were sampling their products throughout the store and hosted the evening. The high light of the evening was the presentation of two checks: Boys and Girls Club $2,500.00 Angels with Blue Jeans $2,500.00 There were many opportunities to network during the evening and David and Teri will never leave an opportuni-ty for a new member to go unrecognized. We asked and will have in the future Ransom Murray present at one of our meetings to introduce his organization, Angel with Blue Jeans. We also hope to have the new manager of the store to attend one of our meetings. We would welcome their participation with our club. Together, we can accomplish so much more if we combine our efforts, than by working by our selves. By Andrea Hu, KIWIN'S Divisional Bulletin Editor On early Saturday morning, KIWIN'S and Key Club members participated in testing out the Rose Floats for the New Years. Overall, it was a great experience and an honor for everyone who went to test out the KIWA-NIS Float. Besides me who participated in the event, Fiora Chan, Sophia Uemura and Sylvia Kwon came too from Glen A. Wilson KIWIN'S. We had fun being part of something so memorable and cherished the moment when the float finally moved. The experience made me reminiscence on my childhood of watching Rose Floats on televi-sion; I was part of something exclusive. Thank you Mr. Wallach for being a great advisor and for dealing with all of us in the early morning. The "behind-the-scene" of the Rose Float Parade was something new that I learned and experienced today all thanks to the KIWANIS Family. By Melanie Yu Key Club hosted its 71st annual In-ternational Convention (ICON) this year from July 2 to 6, a four-day, three-night event comprised of vari-ous district caucuses, workshops and activities that brought together Key Clubbers from all over the world. Senior Winston Lin from Region 3 of the CNH District said that the occa-sion was a rewarding experience. “ICON, like several other district events, brought a greater perspec-tive of Key Club as a whole. I believe that *attendees+ of ICON are now motivated by the greatness of our organization,” Lin said. ICON began with a Meet and Greet for everyone to get to know each other and to meet ‘iconic’ charac-ters such as Disney’s Queen Elsa and

Princess Anna. A beach-themed dance on Thursday night encour-aged everybody to wear Hawaiian clothes and Key Club leis. Friday and Saturday each kicked off with early morning general sessions and a variety of different leader-inspiring workshops for individuals to both have fun in and learn from. Fundraising ideas, project involve-ment, icebreakers and new services within these workshops were able to bring together members from different districts. Throughout junctures during the day, members were also taken into ballrooms in order to help listen to speakers and elect the new interna-tional board of 2015. When it later came to the “Dance 2 Eliminate” party on Saturday night, it was again worthwhile for ICON

attendees to both raise money for the Eliminate Project and to enjoy a good night’s out simultaneously. While the California-Nevada-Hawaii (CNH) District may have dominated ICON in numbers at the Anaheim Marriott, the spirit and enthusiasm in the atmosphere definitely be-longed to each and every one of the Key Clubbers attending, from the Capital to the Carolinas District. As many members agreed upon, “We wanted to have a great time with our friends, meet new people, learn how to better give back to the world and become new and im-proved Key Clubbers—all of which we did at ICON,” which many of us could not have agreed upon more.
