Mahmooooo’s Message Memorial Day is Monday, May 26. We as Kiwanians place great im-portance on patriotism, and hon-oring our men and women in uni-form. Lets remember to make time this Memorial Day and honor our military heroes. Memorial Day is a US federal holi-day wherein the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forc-es are remembered. The holiday, which is celebrated every year on the final Monday of May, was for-merly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to com-memorate

the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Ameri-cans who have died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national and military cem-eteries. We encourage all our members to visit military cemeteries and place flags on the graves of our fallen soldiers, say a prayer, take part in special ceremonies being held in our communities. Lets reach out to friends, neighbors, and relatives who have lost a loved one while defending our country, and offer our respects and thanks.

Please remember that on this day, the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only un-til noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position re-members the more than one mil-lion men and women who gave their lives in service of their coun-try. At noon, their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.

Remember to serve, and always serve with a smile.

El Presidente was on time again, and the meeting was called to order at 7:00 AM. Charlie Huff stood proud and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Izzeldin Osman was sur-prised to find out he was the designated member to led the patriotic song, “America the Beautiful” was his choice. Lon Salgren delivered an inspi-rational invocation. Club members in attendance were Dave W, Charlie Huff, Izzey Osman, Kathy Young, Grace Chan, David Malkin, Victoria Davidson, Lon Salgren, Ray Jan, and Ben Su (who was also our fea-tured speaker for the morning). Our guests in attendance introduced by David Malkin were LTG Robert Davis, Frank & Elaine Solomone, and John

Fields from Glendora Club joining us for an inter-club. Ben Su introduced Erica Yang, Jon Chia, and Jonas Chen who joined us to represent FFDY. El Presi-dente was a little absent minded and failed to ask our members to introduce another guest joining us, Paul White from La Puente Club, and was quickly re-minded of this lapse. Izzeldin Osman introduced Paul. El Presidente’s ab-sent mindedness contin-ued as he failed to ask a member to introduce our IP First lady, Teri Malkin, and was once again quickly and enthusiastically re-minded of it by all. El Presidente apologized and introduced Teri himself. LTG Robert Davis was quick to remind everyone that El Presidente’s absent

mindedness was a “Fineable” offence, El Presidente happily made up by donating to all of our donation cans. Dave Wallach led us in the sing-ing of our “Welcome Song”. We acknowledged Martha Lacomba’s Birth-day (05/13), and Jasper & Karen Thoue’s wedding anniversary. Kathy Young led the “Happy Birthday & Happy Anniversary” song. Lon sold the “Split the Pot” tickets. Our guest Erica Yang pulled the winning ticket and broke Lon’s win-ning streak, as our winner was Elaine Solomone tak-ing home a whopping $170 Kiwanis dollar ($17). Grace Chan checked for pins and badges, and col-lected food cans for Del Haven. Kathy Young cir-culated the donation cans.

We collected $5.00 for Relay for Life, $6.00 for Children’s Hospital, and $16.00 for ELIMINATE. A total of $42.00 was con-tributed by generous members and guests for Happy/Sad dollars. El Presidente declared every-one in attendance as “Mr. K” & “Mrs. K”; and invoked the honor system, asking those, who failed to be friendly to generously do-nate to the collection, can of their choice, except Kathy, the bearer of the “No Fines Badge”. El Presidente rang the bell at 8:15 AM, at which time the meeting was ad-journed as we sang “Hail to Kiwanis”. Thanks every-one! Submitted by: Kathy Young & Mahmood Bashir

Paul White, La Puente/Industry Club, present-ed our President, Mahmood Bashir, a check for $100.00. The check is to be used to off-set some of the cost of repairs made to our food trailer following acts of vandalism. Thank you La Puente/Industry, our "mother" club, for taking care of us.

Story by David Malkin Our speaker this week was our very own club member, Ben Su, who shared his experiences at the Foundation for the Disabled Youth, FFDY. Ben had several of the FFDY volunteers with him to assist in the presentation: Ray Jan (also a Hacienda Heights Kiwanian), Erica, John and Jonas (an intern at Ben’s office). Erica spoke about the SLP in-volvement with FFDY and John spoke about how the vol-unteers obtain mentoring experiences for leadership skills. Ben also used two videos to allow the audience to experience what is like to be a volunteer at FFDY. The Foundation For Disabled Youths (FFDY) is a grass-roots non-profit organization established in June 2004 in the San Gabriel, California area. Parents officially formed the organization and other concerned individuals of disa-bled youths whose initial purpose was to provide aid for the many special needs of disabled children. The FFDY’s mission is to provide a local forum where families of disabled youth can share information, knowledge and experiences with other families in similar situations. Those shared include opportunities to participate in diverse community activities and support groups, as well as answers and solutions to many ques-tions and issues that arise while raising a disabled child.

BEN SU FOUNDATION FOR DISABLED YOUTH

8

By Ben Su Ben Su was our guest speaker this week. He spoke about the Foundation For Disabled Youth, FFDY. Upon closing his presentation Ben shared the following thought: We are all blessed with special gifts. One thing that is so unique about this group or club is that each of you work very hard in using your special gifts to making a huge difference in the community. I am very impressed at the way the key club members, SLP, and our young gen-eration generate activities beyond their imagination in helping different people around them. As the incoming President of the Rotary Club of Walnut Valley, I have learned a lot from the activities that this club generates. Our club sponsored 6 schools with a total of 435 interact and Rotaract members, the highest among any club in the nation. But the total number of activities we generate are less than a quarter of what this club, the Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights, accomplish in a year. I have total respect and admiration for this club and for the Kiwanis organization as a whole. My hope and dream is that as we continue to serve our community, regardless of whether we are Kiwanians or Rotarians, we can be just like the environment that Foundation for Dis-abled Youths created, embrace and unite our passion and continue to demonstrate servant leadership in making bigger impact in the communities around us and around the world. Thank you so much for all your support and for all you do. Story by David Malkin

Adopt-A-Highway

May 17, 2014 Story by Lon Salgren First off, thank goodness for cooler weather! We had temperatures in the low hundreds just 2 days before AAH was scheduled. When I arrived it was 82 degrees. By the time we wrapped up just before 11 it had only climbed to 84 degrees. This month we were small but mighty. Kiwanis members in attendance were Robert Barba, Charlie Huff, and Lon Salgren. Other adults helping were Samantha Higbee, Jen Strinz and Ted Strinz. Los Altos KIWIN'S and Key Club were represented by Sandy Ku, Maharsh Patel and Eric Lin. Glen A Wilson KIWIN'S and Key Club were represent-ed by Firuze Barimani, Parvene Barimani, Sophia Vemura, Jade Wong and Josephine Tjandra. Jen and Sam were there to help chaperone the OGMS Builders Clubbers to their beach cleanup event that was scheduled to take place after AAH. She informed me that the Builders Clubbers were supposed to attend AAH as a prerequisite to doing the beach cleanup, that there would be no end of year OGMS Builders Club beach clean-up. In total we cleaned up over 900 cigarette butts and a lot of other trash from Colima Road. Thanks to everyone that came out to help in this community service project!

By Dave Wallach As school is coming to a close this year, some of our KIWIN'S and Key Club members are graduating. Both Los Altos and Glen A. Wilson High Schools held their Senior Recognition Nights last Wednesday and Thursday night. The students were being recognized for their accomplishments in academics, sports, and their contribu-tions to their school and community. On Wednesday Los Altos held their event and President Mahmood and Dave Wallach attended. The students were in their gowns and many students received awards. We recognized 5 students from KIWIN'S, Key Club, and the general senior population. We awarded (2) $500.00 scholarships from our Club Scholarship. The recipi-ents were: Cheryl Ching and Christina Gurdzhyan. Receiving our $500.00 Key Club scholarship was Ashley Ho and Tiffany Chang was awarded our $500.00 KIWIN'S scholarship. Throughout the night we kept hearing Ash-ley Ho and Tiffany Chang being recognized and receiving many awards. We also recognized Jocelyn Liu as the recipient of $250.00 scholarship as 1st runner-up for Miss 4th of July. The evening was very successful and many of our Key Club and KIWIN'S members received many awards and other scholarships. Thursday night Glen A. Wilson held their Senior Awards event. Dave Wallach was in attendance. There was a buzz in the air and students were taking photos of other classmates before the event began. The event began and once again many of the Key Club and KIWIN'S members continued to be called up to receive awards. Our (4) $500.00 Scholarships went to two students. Receiving one of our club $500.00 Scholarships and the $500.00 Key Club Scholarship was Firuze Barimani. Receiving our other $500.00 Club Scholarship and the $500.00 KIWIN'S Scholarship was Ashley Lee. Sabrina Lim was recognized for receiving $100.00 as a runner-up to Miss 4th of July. Throughout the night we heard Firuze Barimani being recognized for his accomplishments along with many of the other Key Club members and KIWIN'S members.

ROWLAND UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (RUSD) AWARDS HACIENDA HEIGHTS KIWANIS CLUB

THE GOLDEN APPLE AWARD

Story by David Malkin The Rowland Unified School District (RUSD) awarded the Hacien-da Heights Kiwanis Club the prestigious Golden Apple Award on Thursday night at the RUSD annual Recognition and Award Dinner at the Diamond Bar Golf Course banquet room. The Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching was the idea of Golden Apple founder Martin J. (Mike) Koldyke, who felt that excellent teachers did not receive adequate recognition for their contributions to building a stronger, better-educated socie-ty. Today, the Golden Apple Award is presented to district staff as well as community agencies that support education. This year Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club received the award as well as Wilson Mach, First General Bank, who is a Corporate member of our club. Victoria Davidson, the President Elect, ac-cepted the award from Mike Ward, President of the Association of Rowland Administrators (ARA), for our Club. In the presenta-tion of the award the club was thanked for its Shoes That Fit and Read Around the World programs, as well as donations of food, clothing and school supplies during the past year. THE GOLDEN APPLE AWARD

On Monday, May 19, OGMS, Law Enforcement Acad-emy hosted their 5th Annual Awards Banquet at Los Altos High School. The event was well attended with almost 60 people coming together to honor these young men and women. Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club members in attendance, o support LEA, and help serve food were President Mahmood Bashir, Lon Salgren, Robert Barba, Honorary Members Jen-nifer LeBrun & husband Paul, Samantha Higbee and husband Matt. LEA Instructor, Mr. Scott Dun-

can praised our club for our continued support of the program, for providing community service opportunities to the cadets, and help instill in them the importance of giving back. Cadets were recognized for their academic achievements, physical agility, and leadership. Mr. Duncan challenged the cadets to demonstrate their physical fitness (doing push-up's), and knowledge of California Penal Code (explaining the code sec-tion, just by being told the code section number). The cadets were impressive, a tribute to the effectiveness of this great program. At one point Mr. Duncan was challenged to push-ups, and he obliged. It was a fun and enjoyable evening for all in attendance. We are so very proud of these mid-dle schoolers for their achievements, and dedication to excel-lence and staying true to their motto "Dream Big, Work Hard, Celebrate Success".
