Story by David Malkin Our speaker this week was Darrell G. Brooke, Attorney At Law, Certified Specialist, Estate Planning, and Trust and Probate Law. Darrell is a former Kiwanian and as he stated, “he went over to the dark side and joined the “R” club”. Since Darrell knew many of the Kiwanis traditions he was able to weave those into his presentation and inject many humorous moments. The goal of estate planning is to avoid probate. A probate pro-ceeding can result in a significant delay in the distribution of the decedent’s assets and become rather expensive. Unfortunately, it cannot always be avoided. The first topic he discussed was Wills. This is the minimum that one needs only if their estate is less than $150,000.00. Anything more than this amount they should move into a Trust. A Trust allows you to leave your assets to your beneficiaries without undergoing the time consuming and costly pro-ceedings of probate. A Revocable Trust in combination with a pourover will is the backbone of every good estate plan. A Living Trust is a legal document executed by the grantor (the person who creates the trust) to the trustee (the person in charge of the trust) for the benefit of the designated beneficiaries. Mr. Brooke then discussed Health Care Directives and Conservatorships. When an individual is unable to handle his or her own financial and/or personal affairs, the need may arise for the appointment of a conservator. A Guardianship is similar to a Conservatorship, however the appointment of a Guardian is made for a minor and not for an incapacitated adult. The needs of each individual are different and needs to be evaluated on an individual

bases. Finally, you should have an Advanced Health Care Directive that ap-points someone to make health care decisions for you when you are not able to and instructs that person what your desires are for health care. Happy & Sad Dollars

Tina – Happy because my oldest son Nathan, a Veteran who has been sick for 10 years will finally be receiving a Kidney and I am proud to say that I am the donor. It has been a long road but finally it will be taking place either in December or Janu-ary. Jay – Happy to say that when I received my new Drivers License, I applied the sticker to the Organ Donor section. David M – Happy because the Senior Pathfinders collected another $120 for Shoes that Fit. Dave W – Happy because this past Saturday was the KIWIN’s Fall Rally North in Manteca. I started out at 3:00 AM, picked up 7 KIWIN’s, different locations and made the drive. Had a flat tire in

Ventura, got it changed and finished the trip. A long day and a lot of driving. Also happy for Tina. Mahmood – Thanks to the SLP’s for the Thank You notes. Had a good time at Key Leader in Jul-ian. Remember, something the smallest things make the biggest impact. Victoria – Sad because if forgot my canned food for the food bank. Lon – Happy because the Newton Builders Club will be holding a canned food drive. Asked by the Advisor if we had a group to donate the cans to and was told that they would be donating to Del Have. Happy because we took 28 SLP’s to Key Leader at Julian. Was very successful and fun.

Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club Elvis Social Hacienda Heights Community Center

By Nancy Bashir Elvis & his pelvis are alive & well, at least they were on October 29th at the brand new Hacienda Height Community Center. Our inaugural Fifth Wednesday Social night was beyond fun for those of us who attended……what a fabulous idea our Madame

President has imple-mented! Elvis took the stage right be-fore 7:00 & several of us (who shall remain nameless) acted like we were teenagers transported back to the 60’s & early 70’s. Those in attendance were Madame President Victoria Davidson & Jay Daub, Mahmood & Nancy Bashir, Susan Jacklin, Kathy Young, Robert & Debra Barba (and lots of Barba family!), Lon Salgren, and David & Teri Mal-kin. It was a great evening & we encourage all of our members to take part in these events. Pure fun!

Public Safety Appreciation Luncheon

2014 Homeland Heroes

October 30, 2014 members of the Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights in their various community roles gathered with hundreds of involved citizens from the 4th Supervisorial District to honor the men and women who serve our unincorporated county neighborhoods as law enforcement and fire protection. Anna Wu, Victoria Davidson, and Lon Salgren were able to attend and represent the Club. David Malkin and his bride, Teri, represented the Senior Pathfinders Club, who also sponsored the event. Gino Kwok attended with the members of the Hacienda La Puente School Board. Mary Ann King, Hacienda Heights resident and host of Romper Room, helped pass out door prizes. Pete Demetri-ou, KNX newscaster, was the Master of Ceremonies. Sheriffs, Firefighters, and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers filled the room to help honor their own. Explorer cadets from all three programs were honored as well. Don Knabe presented the audience with a video on sex trafficking that highlighted the fact that a 10-17 year old "sex worker" is not a criminal, is not a prostitute, but rather is a victim forced into that life of crime. It was a gritty but eye opening look at what is happening right here in LA County. The highlight of the luncheon for our club was the presentation of the Deputy of the Year award for the unincor-porated Hacienda Heights area to our own "Town Sheriff" Brian Sanford. Brian is a former member of our club and is actively involved in many of the events we support, in particular, the annual 4th of July Parade and the organizing committee. Please consider attending this incredible event next year. It is truly a blessing to see the dedicated heroes that serve, protect and police our communities.

2014 La Puente Spooktacular 5k

By Nicolas Castillo-Davidson, Newton Builders Club At 6 a.m. on the morning of October 26, 2014, I arrived at the La Puente City Hall to register for the 2014 La Puente Halloween run. I have run in a few 5Ks before, but this was my time running in the La Puente Main Street run. Before the run, I meet up with two of the scouts from my troop - Troop 701 from First United Methodist Church, La Puente. Juan "Junior" Lerma and Ismael Oritz. Junior was in Builders Club at Newton last year and is a Key Clubber at Los Altos this year. Ismael is also a freshman at Los Altos, I am trying to get him to join the K Family. At 7:15 a.m. the race started and less than 20 minutes later, Ismael crossed the finish line with Junior shortly behind him. I finished with a time of 26 minutes 42 seconds for a fourth place in our age group. On November 25th, Ismael will be presented an award for being the fastest 11-14 year old male in the 5K. Throughout the event we saw Kiwanis Family all around. Mrs. *Nancy+ Begg from the La Puente Club was helping Ms. *Irma+ Salcedo, her fellow club member, by passing out bananas to all the runners at the end of the race. Mr. *Gino+ Kwok from Hacienda Heights Kiwanis was at the starting line with the City Council and 57th Assembly Representative, Ian Calderon. It was a great event. There were over 2500 runners for the 10K because the La Puente run is one of the training events for STUDENT RUN LA as they train for the LA Marathon. I hope to be able to join that for the 2016 marathon. But while I wait, I will be running the YMCA Turkey Trot on November 16th. Can't wait to join you all for a great pancake breakfast!

SPLENDID 20 A CELEBRATION OF 20 YEARS OF DANCE

ANNE MA DANCE IMPRESSIONS PRODUCTIONS (DIP)

Story by David Malkin A week long celebration of the grand opening of the new Hacienda Heights Community Center culmi-nated last Saturday night with the beautiful cultural dance production, Splendid 20, celebrating 20 years of dance. The event was a sold out audience with many of our Kiwanis Club members present in the audience and to give a helping hand. Would you expect anything different from a Kiwanian. Present were: John Hsu; Stephanie Hu and Ed Royce, David Malkin and former first lady Teri Malkin; Susan Jacklin; Ray Jan; one of our newest members Wilson Mach; and our President Elect Anna Wu and former member Ben Su. Ms. Anne Ma established Dance Impressions Productions (DIP) in 1994. Their mission is to promote the art of Chinese folk dance, and motivate the younger generation to better understand their Chi-nese heritage. Dance Impressions Productions also focuses on entertainment performance art. Their

dancers are trained in, but not limited, to many dance forms, including Chinese classi-cal dance, folk dance, martial arts, ballet, modern, jazz, tap, and hip-hop, as well as flexibility discipline. They encourage their dancers to be well rounded in every form of dance. Dance Impressions Productions has played a very important role in promoting Chinese culture by performing in various events around Southern California. Many of their dancers also perform at various con-certs outside of the local area. In 2011, Dance Impressions Productions received a special invitation to perform 24 major shows at Disneyland for Disney’s Family Fun Weekend Lunar New Year Celebration for Year of the Rab-bit. To celebrate the 100th National Day of the Republic of China, Dance Impressions Productions trav-eled to Taiwan to participate in an exciting dance performance and culture exchange program with the famous City Ballet Company. Today, Dance Impressions Productions team up with STC Foundation to combine their efforts in exploring and sharing the Asian culture.

Key-Leader Camp Cedar Glen October 24-26

Service Leadership Program

By Allie Chang Co-Historian, Wilson KIWIN’S Kids from all over California came to Julian, California, to learn how to be a better leader and to take risks. In the time span of three days, all the kids grew as an individual and made stronger and new bonds that will last forever. Throughout all the different activities such as, trying to climb over a wall, the bonfire, and all the neighborhood activities brought all of us closer. When we first got to the camp, we played some ice breakers to get to know some of the peo-ple. We then learned about the key leader principles. Each person was put into a neighbor-hood and was asked to make a team name, a team chant and, a team poster. Throughout the weekend we met with our neighborhood plenty of times to do little activities to learn about the key leader principles. To learn about the key leader principles our amazing key leader facil-itator, Wendy, shared with us a story about Larry and we learned about all the good things he has done and how they people gave back to him when he needed the help. He found many ways to fundraise for good causes. Besides all the in-door activities we did we even did some outdoor activities that taught us about trust and commu-nication. We learned about trust when we were given the task to all climb over this 12-15 feet wall. (Continue on Page 11)

(Continued from Page 10) We had to rely on the people to lift you up safely and to catch you if you ever fall. Many people struggled with this activity because most people don’t tend to trust the people that they don’t quite know. We also did this communication exercise where there are two groups and there is a wall in between them. They are given the same objects but one group is supposed to create the master-piece while the other group replicates it. They are only given a number of phone calls

to talk to each other. They are not allowed to say the actual name of the item so it’s truly based off of communication. Throughout the weekend, you were able to see how much peo-ple have grown and became a different person. The change that can happen over a weekend is amazing. I would like to thank the Hacienda Height Kiwanis to sponsor KIWINS and Key club members to attend this wonderful leadership camp. Without their support and this oppor-tunity many of us would not have went and became such amazing leaders.

By Bailey Lu Wilson Key Club Key Leader is one of the most memorable places I have ever been to. It has not only changed my life in many ways, but Iv'e gained new friends through process. The camp facilitators, stu-dent and adults, are amazing and help us learn efficient ways in becoming leaders for our club and community. This camp has a lot to offer from their amazing camp grounds to their ways in teaching us servant leadership. It's an honor attending that camp and it is and al-ways will be my Key moment in Key Club. "Julian, CA is famous for their apples. I believe Julian's best crop is our Key Leader graduates from camp Cedar Glen. It is my hope that the seeds we planted here will continue to grow and that these graduates will flourish from what they have learned " - Lon Salgren

KEY CLUB PRE FALL RALLY

By Dave Wallach This past Saturday both Key Club 35 East and West held Pre Fall Rallies in preparation of Fall Rally at 6 Flags this Saturday, November 15th. Key Club 35 East led by Lieutenant Governor Daanyaal Kumar met at Creekside Park in Wal-nut. Over 250 Key Clubbers gathered to prac-tice cheers and show their spirit. The day began at 11 am and concluded at 3 pm. By the end of the day spirit and cheer was overflowing. LTG Daanyaal is confident that Key Club 35 East will win the Spirit Battle and bring home the Spirit Stick. LTG Mahmood Bashir and Dave Wallach were on hand to show our support. Key Club 35 West led by Lieutenant Governor Vince Ngyen met at Arcadia Park in Arcadia. Close to 300 Key Clubbers, included members from both Glen A Wilson High School and Los Altos High School, gathered to practice cheers and show their spirit. The day began at 3 pm and concluded at 7 pm. By the end of the evening the Key Clubbers were pumped up and ready to show their spirit and recite their cheers with volume and unison. LTG Vince is confident that Key Club 35 West will win the Spirit Battle and bring home the Spirit Stick. LTG Mahmood Bashir and Dave Wallach were on hand to show our support. This year’s Fall Rally looks to be one of the largest attended. If you are interested in volunteering to be a chaperon please let LTG Mahmood know.
