Madame President Victo-

ria Davidson arrived for

the meeting well be-

fore 7:00 AM start time,

but in a show of generosi-

ty allowed everyone ade-

quate time not to be late,

and with the clanking of

the bell called the meeting

to order at 7:05 AM. As is

customary and traditional

for our club, we observed

our normal rituals. Gino

Kwok delivered the invo-

cation. Charlie Huff asked

everyone to place their

right hand over their left

ventricular and lead us in

the Pledge of Allegiance.

Lon Salgren very patrioti-

cally fixed the flag, so it

was properly displayed,

hence following the "The

Proper Flag Etiquette" as

our "Song Master"

Dave Wallach led us in the

singing of the patriotic

song. His choice "Grand

Old Flag". Charlie Huff

pointed out to Madame

President that we had

guests amongst us, and

they should be intro-

duced. Madame Presi-

dent told us the guests in

attendance had requested

not be introduced as

guests, Kyra being the

exception, since she has

not mastered the art of

speaking as yet, soon we

are certain. None the less

we welcomed our guests

Kathy Young, Bob Castillo,

and our future KIWIN'S

LTG, Kyra. Madame Presi-

dent next introduced our

Division-35 LTG Mahmood

Bashir. We sang the

"Welcome Song", as Mad-

ame President led us

through it. We next

acknowledged Susan Jack-

lin's birthday (02/23).

Madame President led all

in attendance in the sing-

ing of "Happy Birthday"

song. Our very own Anna

Wu, Division-35 Chair and

our club's Chair for project

ELIMINATE was the guest

speaker. She gave a pas-

sionate presentation on

the importance of do-

nating to the cause and

saving lives. During Anna's

presentation, a few addi-

tional guests slipped in,

they were from Wilson

Key Club, Austin Ly, LTG-

Elect for D35W, Dylan

Tran, Executive Assistant

Felicia was accompanied

by her dad, Duke Le. Once

Anna finished her presen-

tation LTG Mahmood

Bashir introduced these

additional guests. We

sang our "Welcome Song"

way too many times, and

actually know the extent

of our singing talents,

Madame President decid-

ed to spare them from

listening to it yet one

more time. Members in

attendance were

Madame President

Victoria Davidson, Charlie

Huff, Dave Wallach,

Lon Salgren, LTG Mahmo

od Bashir, Izzeldin Osman,

Anna Wu, and John Car-

michael. Madame Presi-

collected the food items

for Del Haven and per-

formed the badge & pin

checks, while Dave Wal-

lach circulated the dona-

tion cans for RFL, ELIMI-

NATE, and Children's Hos-

pital. Lon Salgren sold the

Opportunity Drawing Tick-

ets. Our guest Austin Ly

pulled the winning ticket,

Izzeldin Osman was the

lucky winner. Madame

President has still nor

found her "lost marbles"

so Izzey was denied the

chance to pull the "blue

marble", instead he won

$70.00 Kiwanis dollars

($7.00). Madame Presi-

dent declared everyone

friendly, so there were no

fines, or contributions to

our coffers. Our meeting

was fun, productive, in-

formative, and enjoyable.

We missed all of our

members not in attend-

ance. Hope to see all of

you next week.

Story by Lon Salgren Our speaker last week was Anna Wu. She presented her program on our Kiwanis International Project Eliminate. She told us that it was not until roughly 13 months ago that the project really resonated with her. It is no coinci-dence that this shortly after Kyra was born. She informed us that soon after Kyra was born she would cry in pain within an hour or so after being fed. It was not until their third Pediatrician that Kyra was diagnosed to have an aller-gy to lactose. Anna had been drinking extra milk to supple-ment calcium because it was recommended. Soon after Anna cut dairy from her diet, then the symptoms disap-peared from Kyra. Anna told us that she would do any-thing she could to keep Kyra safe and prevent the pain that was causing her to cry. This is when the $1.80 to fund three vaccinations to immunize the mother and child from MNT really sank home. Anna asked me a little over a year ago if she could take on the Eliminate Chair position for our Kiwanis Club. Next she went to our incoming LTG Mahmood Bashir to volunteer to take on the Division 35 Eliminate Chair position as well. Anna either brings Kyra or shares photos of Kyra from her tablet to help illustrate the need for us to support this project. A smiling, curios and happy Kyra is REALLY an effective prop to bring this world-wide service project into focus on a personal basis. She told us that she is bringing Eliminate cans (re-purposed from formula cans) to each of the clubs in our Division 35. The label has on it the Kiwanis Club name and the monthly goal that each club sets. Our monthly club goal is $500. She also gave examples of companies that can provide matching funds for their employees that contribute to a charity such as Project Eliminate. She reminded us to check if our employer has a similar matching-funds policy. Anna also had Krispy Crème doughnut cards for us to sell, with the intention that the funds raised will go towards Eliminate. Each card is $12 and entitles the bearer to a free dozen doughnuts for each dozen purchased. Please contact Anna if you need further information on how you can get involved or donate in this Kiwanis International Service Project Eliminate.

Spotlight on our Member

This year is Kiwanis 100th year anniversary, as we celebrate the history of Kiwanis, it’s also im-portant to recognize the history of our members. Our club has been around for 50 years and many of our members have shared in our clubs milestones. To celebrate our 100th year anniversary, we will have profiles of our long standing members here.

Our spotlight on member this issue is on Lon Salgren!! Interviewed by Anna Wu Anna: Many of you might not know that besides being very active member of our club (Hacienda Heights), Lon Salgren also is the Cal-Nev-Ha District Trustee. Lon please share with us what is a District Trustee? And what do you do? Lon: The Cal-Nev-Ha District of Kiwanis is one of 4 Districts in Kiwanis that has established a District Trustee position. The purpose of the District Trus-tee is to work on the CNH District governance and Strategic Planning. There are 18 Regions in the CNH District. Each Region has a Trustee. Trustees are elected to a 3-year term, with 6 new Trustees elected each year. A Trustee attends approximately 4 regularly scheduled District Board meetings and any special meetings that may be held, preferably in person. Trustees are also on sub-committees which take on a particular issue then report to the Board of Directors. I am on two committees. One is a committee to determine a candidate for the District Treasurer. I am also on a special committee to hire a replacement for our CNH Executive Director/District Secretary. My Region 13 consists of Divisions 10, 35 and 15. It is required that a District Trustee attend at least two DCM’s for each of the Divisions in their Region annually. We are also responsible for scheduling a Regional Training Conference at least once during their 3 year term and organize an election of our successor. Up until roughly 6 years ago the role of the CNH District Trustee was part of what a CNH Kiwanis LTG did. By comparison the LTG is required to coach and mentor the Club Presidents and as a resource to the club officers and members. Anna: Lon actually has taken on many roles in the past. Besides Past President, he was also past Lt. Governor of Division 35. But did you know Lon was also a past Key Clubber. Lon tell us a little about when you were in Key Club. What year was it? What high school? Lon: I graduated from Glen A Wilson HS in 1976 (the year of our bi-centennial) and according to my annual I was a member of Key Club for two years. I was the club photographer while a member, attending and documenting many service projects and fundraisers. I have fond memories of the many projects I participated in as a Key Club-ber. These include the annual Kiwanis pancake breakfast at Von’s, a Key Club fundraiser selling Christmas trees on campus during our Christmas break. I also helped on a Kiwanis service project where we removed huge plywood campaign signs and tossed them into the back of a pickup truck after an election. The one service project I am most proud of occurred during my senior year. I worked along side Kiwanis members as we installed the large concrete “W” in the small hill on the north side of our Glen A Wilson HS campus. That sign is still visible from the 60 freeway. I remember attending and driving fellow Key Club members to a Key Club convention that was held my senior year at the Anaheim Convention Center. I know I attended at least one Kiwanis meeting. At that time they were meeting at the Jolly Roger restaurant (now the site of Joe’s Crab Shack). I appreciated that the mem-bers of our sponsoring Kiwanis Club attended our various events, fundraisers, service projects, dances, etc. I al-ways knew one day that when I had time to join a service club as an adult, it would be Kiwanis. Spotlight on our Member Lon Salgren

(Continued from Page 7) My entry into community service as an adult began with volunteering to serve as a poll-worker for our elections. I recognized that the some of the elderly poll-workers were struggling to do the job, so I thought I should help them out. One particular special election the polling precinct I normally worked was not used. Instead I was assigned to one that was held in a garage. The gentleman that was the inspector at that precinct (Dave Wallach) had a Kiwanis belt buckle. I inquired when and where their club met. It turns out he was a member of the same Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club that had chartered my Glen A Wilson Key Club. I be-gan attending their next meeting and was inducted December 2005. I have main-tained perfect attendance (some years with make-ups) ever since. Anna: Now that we know all about your K-family past, tell us a little about your actual family. Are you married? How many years? Where did you grow up? Do you have any brothers or sisters? Tell us a little bit about your childhood. Lon: I am married to Debra. This coming September 11th will be our 30th wedding anniversary. I have one Brother (Lee) and Sister-in-Law (Jodi). My parents are Lenus (aka Lee) and Linda. They all live locally in the mountain community of Pine Cove which is adjacent to Idyllwild. Debra and I sold our first home in West Covina in 1992 and bought my parents home (my childhood home from age 9 on) when my par-ents moved full-time up to their cabin in Pine Cove. As a child I lived in La Puente until age 9. One thing that is kind of unique, all my relatives on my Dad’s side of the family have a first name that starts with the letter “L”. My Grandparents were LaVern and Lillian. My Uncle is Less, Aunt is Linda. My Aunt and Uncle failed to follow the tradition when they named their children (my cousins Heidi and Shaun). I have lived locally nearly all my life. I have memories of the small dirt, weed and boulder strewn park with just one slide and swing set that would eventually be torn down (with the help of my future Kiwanis Club) to be-come Stimson Park, later renamed Steinmetz Park. I remember riding my bike in the open fields behind Von’s that would years later be developed into housing. I remember the “Avocado Man”, a local house on Stimson Rd just south of Haliburton Rd. They had a lot of avocado trees on that property and would pick them and put them in a basket on the porch with a sign. You’d just leave a few dollars and help yourself to the avocados. My broth-er and I rode with my Dad on our 1963 Yamaha 60 motorbike in the open fields that were covered with wild oats. In this area there was also the banked turns, all that remained of a failed attempt to build a racetrack. This area would be developed into the Puente Hills mall when I was a freshman in High School. We also rode up Puente Del Este on that motorbike to fly a kite from the empty lots that a developer had gone bust trying to develop with view homes. We also walked or rode our bikes on the dirt road that would eventually be turned into Haliburton Rd to go to “cardboard hill” where we kids rode old cardboard boxes down the grassy slope be-low the water tank. Anna: Thanks Lon, lastly tell us a bit about what you do for work? I know often it feels like Kiwanis is our day job, but what is your occupation? And how many years have you been doing it? New Member Bio Get to know our new members!! Read all about it here!! Daniel Stowell was inducted into the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis club on February 4th, 2013. (photo to the right) Here is the interview with Daniel.

When did you join Kiwanis? I like to think I became a Kiwanian back in High School when I joined Key Club, or I have always been. But I Officially joined on July 15th, 1997 How did you hear about Kiwanis? I first heard about as we called them as the Bunch of Old Folks back in Key Club. We didn't have the respect, that the Key Culb members show now. What motivated you to join? Being a Scholarship recipient and a Key Club Member a former Member and Mentor Ralph Osborne explained why it was such a good idea. Since you been a member what do you think of Kiwanis? And what's your favorite part? Kiwanis was become part of me. My favorite part use to be being there for the Sponsored Youth groups, but now I get so much more out of giving to the families that are in need. Even if they aren't "needy". Tell us about your family. I am the youngest of four children. My family has lost my Brother, leaving my two older Sister's who have three children between them. My Nieces and Nephew mean the world to me. My Mother passed away a couple of years ago, My Father and I have gotten closer after her passing. What are some of your hobbies? My Hobby has become my lively hood. I go to Disneyland and other "trade" events and locations. And sell Disney pins and products them. If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take 3 things with you, what would it be? and why? Gram Nortons Book A Guide to Survival, Duhh; Clean Underwear, Again Duhh. The Kiwanis Bylaws, Something to put me to sleep when I can't. Tell us a little about your career. Past and/or current? My last Profession was I was a Customer Service/Transportation Manager. Customer Service is built into me. Lastly, anything else you would like to share? I have an (some might say) an Abnormal Addiction to Disney.

Spotlight on our Member Lon Salgren

Lon: I have worked in many industries as either a draftsman or upon graduation from Cal Poly as a Manufactur-ing Engineer. It seemed that I could never last longer than five years at any one job before the plant was shut down and the product off-shored or moved to a plant in another state. Upon being laid off from my last job in 2000 I started my own business Top-Down Solutions in July of 2001. I am a niche manufacturer of replacement and aftermarket parts for many older GM vehicles (primarily Camaro and Firebird). Since GM often uses the same parts for several models, I also sell parts for certain Corvettes, Pontiac Fiero, Buick Reatta, and some Ca-dillacs. Basically I turned my hobby of owning a thirdgen (1982-92) Camaro into a business to supply parts for them. As I hobbyist I saw a need for certain parts that the manufacturer had either discontinued or never made available for the car owner. I sell primarily over the internet. I have a few wholesale accounts that I supply, but my pri-mary business is selling the parts either to the customer or to the shop that is working on a customer’s car. Debra joined me in the business about 4 months ago which has freed me up to work on designing and manu-facturing new products. Being self-employed allows me the flexibility in my schedule to volunteer some of my time to Kiwanis.

Anna: Thanks so much for taking the time to share a little bit more about yourself. Kiwanis really is a family. A family that serves together. We are so lucky to have you apart of our family. I know I speak for all of Haci-enda Heights Kiwanis when I say what a valued member you are. Thanks for everything you do and look for-ward to serving with you for many years to come.

Members in attendance were Madame President Victoria Davidson, Lon Salgren, Anna Wu, Da-vid Malkin, Dave Wallach, LTG Mahmood Bashir, and our Divi-sion's First Lady Nancy Bashir. It was day full of camaraderie, fellowship, and education. During the Inter-Club luncheon our club was awarded the "Point Based" award for most Inter-Clubs in the 2013-2014 year, for a large club, a large club being one with 31 members or more. Our club was also awarded the "Super Round Robin" banner patch for the 2013-2014 year. Our members joined by West Covina and Duarte cub members were on hand to cheer, and make some noise when the recognitions were announced. It was indeed a proud mo-ment for the club. Our special thanks to Kathy Young who was the Inter-Club Chair for the 2013-2014 year, for her hard work scheduling the inter-clubs, and constantly reminding our members to attend. Kiwanis One Day

By Anna Wu Kiwanis One Day Committee Chair This year’s Kiwanis One Day is on April 11th, 2015. The Hacienda Heights Kiwanis club is planning on hosting a Community Help Fair at the Hacienda Heights Community Center. We are currently in talks with the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation and Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe’s office to co-sponsor this event. Through the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District we hope to identify families that are homeless and in need in the Hacienda Heights area to give out shoes, books and school supplies to kids as well as access and knowledge to resources for the adults. We will be inviting other non-profits like Meals on Wheels, Delhaven Community Center, YMCA, etc. We are also planning on asking local business to come out and support the event. The Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club will also be serving Pancake Breakfast at this event. If you would like to participate in this event or would like more information please contact Anna Wu at [email protected].

Cal-Nev-Ha Kiwanis Mid-Year Conference

HACIENDA HEIGHTS KIWANIS MEMBER GETS THE DISTINGUISHED

CENTENNIAL AWARD

Story by David Malkin Many of our Hacienda Heights Kiwanis members attended the Mid-Year Conference last week in River-side. This was an opportunity to meet with other Kiwanians, get up dates and see what other clubs are doing. However, it was only those who stayed for the last session of the day who got to experience a once in a life time event, the award of the Centennial Award to one of our own members, Anna Wu, ELIMINATE chair for our club and Division 35. In celebration of its 100th anniversary, Kiwanis Interna-tional is awarding a Centennial Award to those who con-tribute $1,500 to ELIMINATE. For $1,500 you can save or protect more than 833 women and babies from ma-ternal and neonatal tetanus. Anna purchased her Centennial Award on Dec 31st, 2014 when Kyra Wu Lee, her daughter, turned one. It was her birthday present to her Kyra. Instead of getting her something that she would grow out of or get tired of, Anna wanted to give Kyra something of meaning and something that hopefully would teach her generosity and kindness. Saving or protecting more than 833 women and babies from mater-nal and neonatal tetanus is a pretty awesome gift. Anna hopes that one-day, when Kyra is old enough to understand, she will tell her about her 1st birthday gift and the impact on the world. It was also after the birth of Kyra that Anna realized how important the ELIMINATE project was to her. The Kiwanis fam-ily has had a huge impact on Anna and her husband, Richard, who met in KIWIN'S while in high school

and her sponsoring Kiwanis club was like parents to them. Anna can't wait for Kyra to become an SLP in a club, sponsored by the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club! What is important is that everyone contribute to the ELIMINATE campaign. Not everyone can purchase a Centennial Award, but many small donations add up to the same amount. Speak to An-na to set up your contribution and you too can be a hero to a baby not yet born.

Update on The ELIMINATE Project

Kiwanis International Project

CANADIAN GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES SIGNIFICANT GIFT Thursday, February 26, 2015

Earlier this week during a meeting led by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and philanthropist Bill Gates, the Canadian government announced it will match up to CAD$2.5 million in funds raised by UNICEF Canada and Kiwanis Canada over the next two years, resulting in a CAD$5 million contribution to The Eliminate Project. Kiwanis International President Dr. John Button and UNICEF Canada President and CEO David Morley attended the meeting, which focused on global efforts to improve the health of mothers and chil-dren in developing nations. “Canada’s announcement is an unprecedented government commitment to join with Kiwanis and

UNICEF to rid the world of maternal and neonatal tetanus,” says Button. The matched funding will leverage the work of UNICEF Canada and Kiwanis Canada to support a cam-paign focused on MNT elimination efforts in Chad, Kenya, Pakistan, Sudan and South Sudan. More than 3.4 million women of repro-ductive age will be reached with vac-cinations needed to provide immunity and save their ba-bies. Globally to date, The Eliminate Pro-ject has raised more than US$75 million in cash and pledges to support MNT elimination efforts.

Dr. John Button is in Ottawa representing Kiwanis International at a discussion with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, philanthropist Bill Gates, and other leaders about global efforts to improve the health of mothers and children in developing nations.

4TH ANNAUL HEART & SOLE

Story by David Malkin The Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club celebrated February, the month of love, with its 4th annual Heart and Sole event at the Rowland Unified School District (RUSD) Family Re-source Center (FRC) in La Puente. One hundred and six children (106) were pre-screened and pre-selected to re-ceive the shoes based on need. The event, covered by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, is mainly funded by the generosity of the Rowland Heights Senior Pathfinders who “pass the bucket” each month and

an annual donation from the Rowland Heights Home Study Bible Group.

When the children checked in, they were given a slip of paper with their name, address, gender and shoe size. Their first stop was a large bookcase where they picked a book to take home. For many of the chil-dren, this was their first book at home. The children then proceeded to a crafts table, with supplies to design their own thank you note. Then onto the sock station where they selected a pair of socks. The students in RUSD high schools, including the Key Clubs, collected all of the socks. From the sock station they proceeded to the shoe display and gave their slip of paper to the helper stationed there. The children were asked to pick a pair of shoes from various varieties and styles in their shoe size. The volunteer helped the children try on the shoes and make sure they were the right size. After selecting a pair of shoes, the children then went to the last station to pick out a toy, donated by Wam-O Corporation. Children that were unable to attend the event will be given their shoes later at FRC or at their home. The event was made possible with the help of the staff at the RUSD Family Resource Center, including Jennifer Kottke and Katherine Rodriguez. Kiwanis members Dave Wallach, Anna Wu, Ray Jan, former first lady Teri Malkin and David Malkin staffed the various stations. Also on hand to help were Derek Rojas, Valley Vista Services, Ben Su, President of Walnut Rotary and Shezad Ramjan, owner, Ashika Shoes. The event was a success due to the help of these volunteers.

Kiwanis Club gives socks, shoes to 106 needy students in La Puente

The Kiwanis Club showed a lot of Heart and Sole on Friday during its fourth annual

shoe giveway. The Hacienda Heights club gave more than 100 pairs of new shoes to

students in the Rowland Unified School District.

The Kiwanis set up camp at the new Family Resource Center in La Puente. There,

they greeted the families as they arrived for their special treats.

“This year, we’ve helping 106 students who have been preselected by the school

district,” said Kiwanian Dave Malkin. “Much of the money was raised by the Row-

land Heights Senior Pathfinders group. Ashika Shoes also helped a lot.”

After registering, children moved over to a large book case, where they got to pick

out a free book.

Little 4-year-old Brianna Cazun chose a colorful children’s book, while her mom

picked out another for older daughter, Janeli, who attends Telesis Academy.

Another 4-year-old, Edgar Fernandez, finally decided on an alphabet book. The

colorful pages were full of everyday items that began with a letter in the alphabet.

Then it was on to the sock station, where the kids faced a kaleidoscope of colors. Brianna seemed fascinated by the

rainbow of colors, finally setting on some pretty purple socks.

Of course, the main event occurred at the large tables laden with new tennis shoes. Fortunately, the children had

already been measured for their shoe sizes.

So all they had to do was pick a color they liked. Brianna went with purple to match her new socks.

Malkin started the shoe giveaway four years ago.

“I grew up in a very poor family. We didn’t have much,” Malkin explained earlier. “My older brother didn’t have any

shoes to go to high school,”

In those days, he said the PTA gave shoes to needy students, but the footwear was all the same color and style, so it

had a stigma attached to them.

“My brother quit school in the 10th grade because he didn’t want to wear their shoes. He lied about his age and

joined the Army,” Malkin recalled. “If there was anything I could do to prevent that (from happening again), I

would.”

KIWIN’S ELIMINATE BENEFIT CONCERT

By Dave Wallach On Saturday, February 21, the KIWIN'S District of Key Club International held their Eliminate Benefit Concert. The event was held at the Lanterman Auditorium in La Canada and began at 6p.m. The venue was a buzz with the excitement of all the talented youth who had volunteered to perform. We had a good attendance to hear 24 different acts entertain the crowd. The talent ranged from piano playing, to female rappers, to break dancing, to violin playing to singing. A large amount of the talented youth came from our own Wilson and Los Altos High Schools. We had a band play and we even had a number performed by the KIWIN'S District Board. In the lobby they offered Eliminate concert T-shirts and wrist bands, snacks and an opportunity to have their picture taken in front of an Eliminate backdrop. By the end of the concert the KIWIN'S had raised over $5,000.00 dollars for Project Eliminate. The event con-cluded at 9pm. The concert was videotaped and we will be taking the concert on the road to Richmond on March 21st for a Wake-A-Thon. All proceeds will be added to the concert receipts and hopefully we can raise another $1,000.00 for Project Eliminate.

THETHETHE KIWKIWKIWANISCOPEANISCOPEANISCOPE March 3 , 2015

Hello Kiwanians! First, I would like to thank you all for your never ending support for me and the division I serve. Your endless encouragement and constant assistance helped me make it through my term. Serving as a Lieutenant Governor was an experience I'll never forget. I have learned a lot about other people and myself. Serving 1080 members across 12 different and diverse clubs was a challenge I faced head on. I did not have much experience with holding meetings, planning events, or dealing with immense amounts of stress, but I didn't let that or anything else stop me from being the best Lieutenant Governor I could be. My last DCM was held in conjunction with Daanyaal's and I believe it was a perfect way to

end our terms. With over 200 members at our DCM, we made it extra special by having our Lieutenant Governor-Elects host it with us. After the DCM was our last fundraiser, the D35E&W Picnic! At the picnic, members played games, made cards for the troops who serve in our coast guard, and participated in a pie fundraiser for Project Eliminate. Overall, the seals and elephants who attended had a lot of fun. Since our seals and elephants were happy and having fun, Daanyaal and I were happy to plan and host that event for them. I will be very sad when I retire from being a Lieutenant Governor but I know that I will not forget everything I have learned this year. Like everyone says, "Once you're a Key Clubber, you're a Key Clubber for life". Thank you for all that you do, Vince Nguyen (2014-2015 Key Club Division 35 West Lieutenant Governor)

Dear Kiwanis, Thank you for everything. Since Freshmen year, I have been surrounded by loving, car-ing adults called Kiwanis. My journey through Key Club has been nothing but numer-ous learning experiences, fantastic memories, and serving the community and the peo-ple around me. This journey was not possible if it were not for the Kiwanis. The Kiwa-nis have helped to nurture me to become the person and leader I am today. Starting with the Glendora Kiwaniannes when I was just an underclassmen, to numerous Kiwa-nis all over the Division as I gained new leadership positions. I have been affected by so many of the Kiwanis, and they all have made such an impact on me.

I would like to thank every single Kiwanis member form Division 35 that has come to a Division 35 East Key Club event. Taking a few hours out of your day to see what the Key Clubbers are doing, how we are helping the community, how we are fundraising, and how we are running our club, it truly means the world to know that we have the support of the Kiwanis. I know chaperoning can be tedious, annoying, and boring at times, but your support means all the world to us, and though we may not show it at every event, we truly are thankful for when you are there. Knowing that I always have an adult to turn to when I am in need of help, or struggling has truly made this year much more bearable. I know I have asked a lot of the Kiwanis this year when it came to chaperoning (with some last minute emails!), asking for funds for events, having last minute issues, and needing support, but it truly all has been worth it. This year Division 35 East has raised over $3,000 for Pediatric Trauma Program, and over $2,000 for The Eliminate Project, and has served over 15,000 hours. We have added a new Key Club, Covina, to Division 35 East, and have truly grown in attendance to Division events. Also, we did win the spirit stick for the first time ever this year at Fall Rally. This year has truly been a success, and I owe much of it to the Kiwanis that have been sup-porting me throughout this year. I would like to not say good-bye, but a see you later because I know I will be back to join the Division 35 Kiwanis one day, and I will always be apart of the Kiwanis Family! Stomping through for service, Daanyaal Kumar (2014-2015 Key Club Division 35 East Lieutenant Governor)

By Daanyaal Kumar (2014-2015 Key Club Division 35 East Lieutenant Governor), The Region 13 Winter Formal this year was very unique. This year, compared to years before, almost everything about the event was different. A new venue was chosen in the 10South area rather than it normally being in 35East, and the new venue was much nicer. The theme for Winter Formal this year was “A Royal Night”, and that is why we provided crowns for all the members to wear as we walked in and paid. They all were royalty

that night, and we wanted to give them something extra to make them feel that way. Also, a photo area was created and run by several photog-raphers form the Region. The Division 35 East Division Leadership Team created the backdrop that members were taking pictures in front of the whole night! It was a crazy, fun night, filled with food, music, and danc-ing like royalty, and it will be a night that will not be forgotten! Thank you to the over 230 Region 13 Lionfish that attended this event for The Eliminate Project, and helped us to raise over $800 for this cause! Also, huge thank you to all the Kiwanis that chaperoned, this success was tru-ly attributed to you, and your support!

By Millicent Wong, D35W Spirit Task Coordinator, AHS Key Club Historian While high schoolers (and particularly Key Clubbers) from across the San Gabriel Valley fasten their button-up shirts and fix their makeup, Arcadia High School’s Key Club officers are setting up streamers and balloons for a dance to remember: Into the Blue. Into the Blue is an annual fundraising dance hosted by Arcadia Key Club and our sponsor the Sierra Madre Kiwa-nis Club to benefit PTP, this year however the dance was sponsored by our Kiwanis Division-35, and to benefit project ELIMINATE. Revenue from ticket sales also help to set up fundraisers that would increase the amount of money Division 35 West donates every year at Fall Rally. Held at the Arcadia Community Center, Into the Blue (ITB) sees attendees from Divisions 35 West, 35 East, 15, 10 North, 10 South, as well as students from neighbor-ing high schools like Temple City and El Monte, not to mention a sizable crowd from our very own Arcadia High. Supporting us throughout the event were the dedicated chaperons from seven clubs belonging to Kiwanis Divi-sion-35, Hacienda Heights, West Covina, Walnut Valley, Kiwaniannes, Monrovia, El Monte, and our sponsoring Kiwanis Club of Sierra Madre. These thoughtful Kiwanians provided us with great guidance and supervision, al-lowing us to run ITB smoothly not just this year but year after year. Without our Kiwanis Division-35, Into the Blue wouldn’t be possible. And running the event the entire night were the members of Arcadia Key Club, volunteering their Friday night to purchase supplies, distribute food, check ID’s, and keep ITB perfect. Volunteer Myat Wai, a junior at AHS, found it “exciting to see and meet a lot of other Key Clubbers from other schools, especially because *she+ was out front checking ID’s and seeing them all hyped up.” Thanks to Into the Blue, Arcadia Key Club raised nearly $4,000 to contribute to Division 35 West’s donation to Project Eliminate. But, we don’t just host ITB to raise money. We do it for students and Key Clubbers like AHS senior Kaiwen Zhou: "ITB was my first high school dance, but once I stepped onto the dance floor, I found myself loving it. It was a fun-filled evening that I definitely won't be forgetting." Arcadia Key Club’s 2014-2015 officer board would like to thank everyone, from the chaperons and volunteers to the attendees, for making this year’s Into the Blue such a success! We hope to see you all next year! -

Interclubbing with South Hills Covina

By Dave Wallach The Kiwanis Club of South Hills Covina meets on Thursdays at 12:00 noon. They meet at the Covina Bowl in West Covina. Last Thursday, our very own Anna Wu was their program. She spoke on Project Eliminate. Anna brought along her spokes model Kyra along with mama Wu. Our club was represented by Lon Salgren, Dave Wallach, and Kathy Young. Anna did a wonderful job presenting her program and relating her real life story with Kyra and mothers in other countries with babies with tetanus. It truly gives you a different perspective and a better understanding of the prob-lem and why we should do everything we can to rid this terrible disease from third world countries. If you have not done an interclub this year it is never to late.

I attended the Newton Builder’s Club meeting Thursday, February 19th. When I arrived I discovered

they would not be holding a “regular” meeting, but were spending the time watching the movie Daddy

Day-Care as a reward for a successful fundraiser for the Hacienda Heights Relay for Life. I informed by

Faculty Club Advisor Ms. Kammert that the club members had raised over $160 selling CandyGrams

for Valentine’s Day. The funds are planned to be donated to the American Cancer Society. She also told

me the students are in planning to hold a mini Relay for Life on their campus. They have not yet select-

ed a date or time. I informed them of our upcoming community service projects, Adopt-a-Highway

(3/7), Hacienda Heights Relay for Life (4/25) and Watershed Restoration (5/9) also our upcoming fund-

raisers, Pancake Breakfasts (3/21 & 3/28) and Ribfest (5/3). Their next Thursday after-school meeting

will be March 19th, 2:30 PM.
