Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights Wins Club Service Achievement Award - Emerald Section!!!Speech By David Malkin"

LA2015, the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world, kicked off on July 25th and ran through August 2nd, attracting 7,000 special needs athletes from 177 countries. As a pre-game Special Olympic celebration, Host Towns treated the athletes to three exciting days of recreation, entertainment and cultural exchange. "

The Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club was contacted by our local Supervisor‘s field office to see if we could coordinate the activities for the team from Chinese Taipei being hosted by Hacienda Heights. The Supervisor’s staff knew that a job of this magnitude required a special group to get it done…… a Kiwanis Club. "

The Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club rallied the support of local and federal elected officials, law and fire enforcement, businesses, local schools, military and churches to receive a 100 member delegation from Chinese Taipei from July 22 to July 24 to celebrate the uniqueness of Southern California. We celebrated the World Games coming to Hacienda Heights at our annual “I Love America 4th of July Parade”. (Cont. on Pg. 3)"

The Host Town was responsible for providing lodging; transportation and meals for the delegation and most importantly give the athletes a Southern California experience. After the team from Chinese Taipei arrived with the help of our military they were set to start their Southern California journey. We visited In-N-Out, had a Dodger BBQ with Dodger Dogs and Dodger goodie bags, went shopping at a local mall, were entertained by local high school cheer leaders and got to experience a day in the life of our local law enforcement and fire department personnel."

Once it was done I can truly say that we succeeded in changing the world one athlete and one team at a time.

Weekly Meeting NoteJanuary 13th, 2015

By Nancy Bashir"!Our January 20th evening meeting was called to order right on time by our bell clanging President Anna. Nancy led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Lon kicked off the patriotic song with Lady Gaga’s future hit, The Star Spangled Banner, or as Lon called it, “Oh Say Can You See”. Charlie led the short-and-to-the-point invocation, and the meeting was under way."We had 2 guests for the evening, Rowland Key Club Vice President, Lawrence Chan, and Hacienda Heights Improvement Association Vice President, Mike Williams. Lon Gaga led the Welcome Song."Even though there were some club birthdays & anniversaries, we just skipped right over the

singing & totally ignored that part."Old business was discussed, upcoming stuff was discussed, then our surprise speaker, David Malkin, took the floor, since our scheduled speaker, Charles Karsch, canceled. David gave an informative talk on his experience running for school board, quite an eye-opener for those of us who have never participated in an election & assumed it was as simple as “Hey, I want to run for office.” Very educational, thank you, Mr. Malkin!"Anna held a challenge to see who reads the President’s Message in the

Kiwaniscope. Nancy won the challenge (by wearing red, as requested in pres message) & was awarded a bag of Pecan Pie M & M’s, but gave them to Lon Gaga because, seriously, who wants Pecan Pie flavored M & M’s?"There was no Mr or Mrs K….yep, the Pres forgot that too! "Those in attendance were Anna, Lon, Tina, Grace, Izzy, Nancy, David, Charlie, Irma, and a very late but smiling Octavio. "

Story by David Malkin"!Charlie Huff, our speaker coordinator, received a last minute cancellation for his scheduled speaker. To date, Charlie has always been able to fill a no-show. This was no different. Charlie called David Malkin, member of our club, and asked him to talk about his campaign and first 90 days as a new school board member for the Rowland Unified School District. David agreed and Charlie keeps his perfect track record."!David gave an overview of what it takes to run for a public office including:"•" Application"•" Campaign Statement"•" Post Office Box"•" Selection of a PAC name and appointment of a Treasurer (Grace Chan)"•" Forms 460; 410 and 700"•" Ordering of campaign mailing & calling lists for specific demographics"•" Fund raising & Meet and Greet"•" Phone Banking; Mailers; Yard Signs; and Flyers"•" Debates"•" Election Night and Vote Watching"•" Oak of Office by Jacqueline Yeh – President of Rowland High Key Club"!Then David discussed his first 90 days and his introduction to the Brown Act. He learned the importance of the Rule of Three, three votes needed to have a majority and whom he can and cannot speak to. It has been exciting and he looks forward to a very productive four years and making RUSD a district of choice for education."!

By Victoria Kuang"Glen A. Wilson KIWIN'S"!Glen A. Wilson KIWIN'S hosted their second annual Awake-a-Thon to raise money for District Convention and Project ELIMINATE. The event took place at the Del Haven Community Center from 7 PM to 7 AM and was open to anyone from any school. Throughout the event, cabinet lead a variety of fun icebreakers to let everyone familiarize themselves with one another. One especially humorous icebreaker was the Twinkie challenge, where duos had to work together to finish a Twinkie pre-stuffed with unpleasant ingredients. After a delicious pizza dinner, participants were given the option to donate a dollar to pie a cabinet member of their choice. Later on in the night, participants had a blast battling each other in the Super Smash Bros tournament. Overall, the Awake-a-Thon was fun and successful event that went towards a great cause!
