Momentum

Success in business and marketing is all about

momentum, and right now our Economic

Recovery Index is gathering momentum, reaching

in November its highest level for the second

month in a row.

In recent months we have seen a gradual

improvement in general sentiment about the

economy – but in November we have seen a

gradual improvement in sentiment about the

consumer, including spending intentions.

It’s still too early to call, but a gradual alignment

of positive macro sentiment with positive micro

behaviour could finally deliver a pick up in

consumer and retail spending.

Fingers crossed for a positive turn going into

2014.

The Emotional Recovery

We have been reporting our monthly

Economic Recovery Index since April 2009.

We set out four years ago to assess the

psychological impact of the recession and to

chart our ‘emotional progress’ towards

recovery alongside our ‘economic progress’.

This report summarises our Economic

Recovery Index results from April 2009 to

November 2013.

The most recent fieldwork was conducted

during 11th-18th November 2013 inclusive.

The full data series is on our website – if you

want us to conduct additional analyses (by

brands etc) then feel free to get in touch.

4 Economic Recovery Index

Using the answers to the question on ‘stages of recovery’ we have created the Economic

Recovery Index, which ranges from 0 to 100 (0 = deep recession; 100 = back to peak).

Our Index rose further to 29.6 in November 2013, breaking all records since we began

tracking the mood of the nation in April 2009:
