Among the big attractions to this year’sWild@heart Absa Kirkwood Wildsfeesare the biggest stage in the Eastern Cape
featuring top national artists and the country’sfirst festival within a festival for the children offestival-goers.
“We are recognised as one of the most child-friendly festivals in the country, and this yearwe have declared that ‘kids are king in Kirk-wood’ while they are with us,” says festival di-rector Jenni Honsbein.
Housed in the Squillos Kids Square will be aMagic Faerie Trail – another Wildsfees first; aKidsCastle,kid-friendlyridesandpuppetshowsand workshops.
Entry for the first two hours is free.Includedintheattractionsandentertainment
on the festival grounds is the Eastern Cape’s on-ly annual mohair expo, the Walk on the Wilds-ide experience, the province’s biggest new vehi-cle show, and more.
For the first time the festival will be hostinga series of talks on burning and contentious is-sues such as fracking and its consequences, sus-tainable fishingtechniques, anti-poachingandthe effects on adults and children owing to of alack of sleep.
Theatre productions include Een klavier, eenhart with Rocco de Villiers and Die hart is maarnet ‘n pomp (the story of South Africa’s pioneer-ing heart transplant) with Johan Engelbrecht.
A special treat for ladies will be a High teawith Emsie Schoeman, the doyenne of etiquettein SA supported by the two well-known kokke-dore, Tiaan and Mynhardt.
Artists appearing on the giant WindhoekstageincludeWicusvanderMerwe,RadioKala-hari Orkes, Lianie May, Mi Casa, Snotkop, KurtDarren, Desmond Wells, Ray Dylan, NicholisLouw, Izak Davel, Die Campbells, Dr Victor andthe Rasta Rebels and many more.
Also new to the festival is the Tiki Island stylebeach bar, which promises to be the “chill placeof the year,” predicts Honsbein.
Heating up the action and getting hearts flut-tering will be two of TV’s hottest young stars,who will sporting “sixpacks” for photo shotswith fans. Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees visitorswill be able to meet Isidingo’s hunky MauricePaige on Saturday and Izak Davel on Sunday.Both will be showing their Island Style from 10in the morning.

Die vervanging van die emmerstelsel salvolgens haar met die ondersteuning van mi-nister Pravin Gordan en met die samewer-king van die metro-munisipaliteit aangepakword “sodat volhoubare oplossings vir hier-die kritieke water- en sanitasieprobleme ge-vind kan word”.
“Ons ondersoek ook die skaarsheid en be-sparing van water in die metro, veral omdatverliese tans op 33% te staan kom.”
Sy het bygevoeg daar moet ook gekyk wordna die hoë onttrekkingsyfer van water uit diemetro se opgaardamme.Syglodathaardepar-tement diemetro kan bystaan om dié onttrek-kings te verminder.
“Ons moet die verskillende gemeenskappeaanmoedig om water op ’n meer verantwoor-delike manier te gebruik. Voldoende water-voorsiening in Nelson Mandelabaai is en bly’n uitdaging,” het sy benadruk.

Lions will set up a collection point at Pen-ford Pick n Pay on Saturday from 09:00 to14:00.
The Winter Bash is a project of The Minis-try which involves providing the homelessand street children with a hot meal, winterblankets and clothing.

The Cleaver Awards have for the past tenyears confirmed which butcheries are worththeir beef both nationally and regionally.Cuyler Butchery in Uitenhage is the provin-cial winner in the category four or more tillsand received a Platinum Cleaver Award.
The Cleaver Awards, which are proudly sup-ported by Freddy Hirsch, were launched tenyears ago to meet the needs of the consumerby raising standards amongst butcheries.These Awards have grown exponentially innominations this year with over 30 000 nomi-nations coming in from around South Africa.
“Without fail every major winner hasthanked, and given full credit for their suc-cess to, their customers. These butchers listen
to their customers and they know their cus-tomers’ names,” says Ryan Read, who has doneresearch amongst butcheries over the last dec-
ade and who was the master of ceremonies attoday’s prize giving.
“They go out of theirway to provide the cus-tomer with everything they want and more.These butchers deliver a level of customer ser-vice that others can only aspire to.”
Leon Slabbert, owner of Cuyler Butchery, isknown for providing excellent service to hiscustomers, but he is now taking it further,with the total revamp of the butchery.
“It will be a state-of-the-art butcheryequipped with high-tech technology, a take-away section, cafeteria, rest rooms and park-ing for up to 60 vehicles,” said Slabbert.
The approximately R10 million revampingproject will see the property expanded to adouble storey building covering 1400m²whichwill include a biltong plant meeting very highstandards.
According to Slabbert the infrastructurewill meet and even exceed all standards re-quired to operate as a factory. This includesnew drainage and ventilator systems as wellas fire safety and security systems.
An initiative of the South African RedMeatIndustry Forum, these Awards acknowledgebutcheries which meet consumer expecta-tions on in-store hygiene, the supply of quali-ty-assured roller-marked South African Beef,their level of competency in offering the bestadvice on meal preparations and perceivedvalue for money.
Butchers were judged according to threecategories namely butcheries with four ormore till points, butcheries with three or few-er till points and, food market/supermarketbutcheries.
Nominations will soon open for customersofCuylerButchery to vote andnominate themas the best butchery in the country.
