On 1 April 1969, Julia Potgieter walked in-to Volkswagen for the first time, 47 years

later, she retired from Volkswagen with herhead held high after an amazing career.At a special tea held in her honour she was

able to reminisce with VWSA Chairman andMD, Thomas Schaefer, about her years of ser-vice in the company.Julia is a special woman at VWSA, loved

bymany and respected by all her finance col-leagues. Not only is she the longest servingwoman at VWSA, but currently the longestserving employee.A career spanning almost half a century,

all of which was spent in the Finance Divi-sion has given Julia many wonderful memo-ries, such as going for a swim at lunch timein the company pool and the introduction ofthe computer.The Managing Director of the day was

Albert Theunissen, VWSA was buildingthe Beetle, the 411 and the T3 and total pro-duction volume for the year was a mere34 133 units compared to the 2015 figure of120 000.Julia says that she has always enjoyed

working at VWSA and walks away withmany friends and great memories. Her sageadvice for her younger colleagues was to “Al-ways keep a back-up” – so relevant in the ageof electronic communication!Five years ago Julia was diagnosed with

breast cancer, but says that the support shereceived from her Volkswagen Family was ablessing, “The company was so understand-

ing. That was one of the very special thingsthat warms my heart when I think of VWSA”she reminisces.Looking forward Julia is excited that she

doesn’t have to wake up early anymore. Shewill spendher time travelling between Johan-nesburg and Cape Town to visit her grand-children.

the town’s community policing forum recent-ly opened its first official office at 40 MainStreet.

Despatch Sector 2 Crime Forum chairper-son, Jabe de Kock said, “The establishmentof this office reflects an important declarationby Despatch Sector Policing, to be more visi-ble, to keep criminals away from our commu-nity and to build continuously a trustworthyrelationship with the community.”

They previously operated from an office atthe Despatch Police Station, but their new of-fice is ideally situated, and clearly visible, inthe centre of town. It renders services to thosewho need assistance after being affected bycriminal related issues.

“We are not the police. We can not act onbehalf of them. We are residents who volun-tarily serve as watchdogs, being the eyes andears for the police, security services and com-munity.

“We are in constant contact with the policeand provide a channel through which thecommunity can play a meaningful role in

crime prevention through visibility and co-ordinated patrols,” said De Kock.

He thanked local businesses for their sup-port and also taking pride in Despatch andits residents and urge more residents also toget involved in safeguarding their neigh-bourhood.

According to one of the Despatch Sector 2Crime Forum members, Francois Fouché,“The town boasts a close-knit communitywith residents being proud to live here. I amone of them.

“I love Despatch and therefore I serve onthe Forum with pride, in helping to safeguardour neighbourhood.”

The beginning of March 2016, marked a sig-nificant day at VWSA, as Faith Lelaka tookup the position of Unit Head of the PaintShop. This is the first timeablackwomanhasbeen appointed at this level in the productionenvironment.

Faith started as an in-service trainee inFebruary 1999 and has spent most of her VWcareer in and around the paint shop. In 16years she has worked her way from a techni-cian in the process lab to the production lineand into leadership.“I realised early on that I needed to be in-

volved in as many aspects of the job as possi-ble and if that meant getting into a tank tomeasure paint levels or running multipletests to check paint viscosity, that’s what Iwas going to do!” remarked Faith

Faith is a wife of 10years and themotherof 4 children. So sheknows what it is liketo juggle work andhome life. She placesa great deal of em-phasis on family lifeand says that “find-ing the balance be-tween home andwork is a challengethat she is constantlyworking on”.When asked how

she felt about the ap-pointment, Faith re-marked “I am hon-oured and humbledby the recognition Ihave received

through this appointment. I am aware of thechallenges that lie ahead. As the new leaderof this team I know that a leader is just ateammemberwith a bitmore responsibility– being a part of a team is a core VWValue.”“As a companywe are proud to haveFaith

Peter Myburg, former Mr PE 2013 and oldMuirite, has challenged himself to finishthe IronMan 2016 on April 10th, in orderto give a childwith ahearingdisability thechance of hearing.

Myburg made a bet with a corporatefriend to pay for the hearing aid if he (My-burg) manages to complete the IronManrace, which consists of a 3.8km swim,180.2km cycle and a 42.2 run.As an ambassador for the South African

Audio Association, Myburg says “I’m do-ing IronMan to prove to people that nomatter your disability big or small, youare capable of doing anything you putyour mind to.”Not only is Myburg competing in the

race to try to fund a child in need of a hear-ing aid, but he’s taking part to createawareness about his campaign that hestarted: #RacingForHearing.The focus of his campaign is to create

awareness and inform the public aboutthe importance of hearing and how neces-sary is it for people with hearing loss orimpairments to have hearing aids.The prices of a hearing aid range from

Les Barnes, who was sports editor of DieOosterlig for 25 years will celebrate his80th birthday on Tuesday, March 29.

Les and his wife Elizabeth, have threesons, Peter, David and Paul and sevengrandchildren – six at Grey Junior andone at Collegiate Junior.

His sons are the owners of Sunridge Su-perSpar and the Despatch SuperSpar(Paul Barnes).

Les has been associated with the PortElizabeth athletics club and Eastern Prov-ince athletics since 1952. He was secretaryof his club at the age of 18 and later becamechairman – a position he held for manyyears.

He has been the life president of the clubfor the past five years.

Les and his club were awarded nationalcolours for administration which includ-ed the organisation of the former excellentVernon Barnes Memorial meetings.

He is a former national cross-country se-lector and was appointed manager of thenational cross-country team but had towithdraw because of the death of hisbrother.

Since the first day Phillipa Robinson (14) satin a scull and experienced rowing, she knewthis is a sport that she would like to be thebest in.

During 2013,RosemaryBrunette, the coachof Zwartkops Rowing Club (ZRC) visitedschools to give a presentation regarding row-ing as a sport.

“Phillipa loves water sport and is a keenswimmer. Shewas immediately interested inrowing. The day she took to the river, it waslove at first row for her,” said Juanita Robin-son, a single parent who takes pride in herdaughter’s dedication to be the best in thissport.

Phillipa excelled from the start. She atten-ded the SA Junior Rowing Championshipsduring 2014, 2015 and 2016.Nowshe is practis-ing for the SA Junior Nationals which willbe held from April 30th to May 1st at Roode-

plaat Dam, Pretoria.“It is a first for me at this nationals and I

really, really want to do good,” said Phillipa.Shewill be accompaniedby four other girls

as well as boys from the ZRC developmentteam.

“Each of the rowers need to raise their ownfunds to be able to attend the nationals. Row-ing is a rare and selective sport, therefore itis expensive,” said Juanita.

It is Phillipa’s dream to have her own scull,but a good scull costs aboutR75 000. In raisingfunds, the mother and daughter team makesrootis which they sell at work and school.Phillipa is a Grade 8 learner at Daniel Pie-naar THS. They will also have a chickenbraai during the first weekend in April.

As as a singlemum it’s difficult for Juanitato maintain her daughter’s sport interest.Therefore they request the public for theirsupport of the rooti sales and chicken braai.
