The Port Elizabeth based centre taking care of sickand injured African Penguins is in a critical situa-

tion as a result of high running costs. The South African Marine Rehabilitation and Edu-

cation Centre (SAMREC) is trying to overcome thedaily electricity consumption which is extremelyhigh, by “going green” through the installation of so-lar panels.

“A total of 120 solar panel kits are needed to go offthe electricity grid completely and this will enable thecentre to be self sufficient,” said Reuann Smith fromNelson Mandela Bay Tourism.

The islands of Algoa Bay are home to 35 of the 91recorded Southern African seabird species, of whichsix of the 14 resident species breed in this area.

“Approximately half of the world’s population ofCape gannets and the endangered African penguinlive here. It is expected that at the current rate of de-cline in the population, the African penguin may dis-appear in less than 5 years time.

“The deepwater harbour at Coega has added a newthreat to thebirds as it is situated rightnext toStCroix

Island, which is now the largest breeding colony of thepenguin. It costs approximately R1 000 to rehabilitatea single bird after incidental oiling,” said Smith.

SAMREC is therefore starting a “go green” cam-paign which allows companies and individuals tosponsor solar panels kits valued at R5 000 per kit inexchange for various marketing opportunities.

LibbySharwoodofSAMRECadvised, “Ourmonthlyelectricity account is astronomical and probablyequal to that of six households together. We would ap-preciate any offer, advice or sponsorships from anyperson or company that would like to see us sustainthe important work done by SAMREC.”

According to SAMREC, since their rehabilitation ef-forts started, many birds, especially the endangeredAfrican Penguin, have been successfully rescued, treated and returned to the wild.

)NMBT is assisting in supporting SAMREC to lob-by for funds and support to keep the doors of this valu-able facility and tourist attraction open. For detailsof sponsorships or support contact NMBT at0 041 582 2575 or SAMREC at 0 041 583 2004.

Mountain bikers can look forward to ridingeco-friendly, hand-cut trails in one of theworld’s most biologically diverse areas whenthey sign up for the forthcoming cycle tourin Addo on February 1.The mountain biking segment of The Her-

aldVWCycleTour cycle tournot only exposesriders to some of the area’s natural wondersbut also provides pathways to developmentby creating trail-building jobs for local la-bourers.According to race director Brad Jackson of

Mountain Events, participants should expect“somethingnewand exciting” from thenewlyskilled route builders.“We believe that a goodmountain bike race

is all about good quality trails,” said Jackson.“In collaborationwith local landowners,we

haveworked on building some of the best ded-icated mountain bike single tracks in thecountry.”At Hayterdale Trails, four labourers are

employed on a permanent basis, while the de-velopment team expands to as many as eightworkers from time to time, as needed.“Aside from the fact that sustainable jobs

have been created, these guys have truly be-comemasters at trail building andhavedevel-oped the skills to build proper single trackswhile adhering to sound environmental prin-ciples.”Asa result of themostly inaccessiblenature

of the terrain, themajority of thework is donemanually without the use of heavy machin-ery.Jackson said the head of the trail-building

crew, Zolile Pikoli, would showcase his signa-ture trail section, aptly named Zorr’s Roller-coaster, for the first time in this year’s race.

He said conserving the environment andensuring it remained unharmed duringevents such as the cycle tour was extremelyimportant as Addo encompassed five of thecountry’s seven biomes.Jackson said riders would have the op-

portunity to experience the beauty and di-versity of the region first-hand.“The cycle tour mountain bike routes

start among citrus orchards in the SundaysRiver Valley and extend to the Zuurbergmountain range and back, traversing a di-verse range of vegetation along the way.The mountain bike events comprise the

80km Extreme, 60km Adventure and 30kmPowerade Leisure Challenge. The 5km Kid-dies’ Challenge and 500mToddler’s Dash, al-so sponsored by Powerade, complete theline-up.Registration takes place on Friday, Janu-

ary 31, at The Boardwalk, with late registra-tion for the mountain bike events continu-ing on the Saturday at the Addo Polo Club.

THE South African Police Service in theEastern Cape would like to make the publicaware about the protection orders and howto access them.A protection order aims to prevent the re-

currence of domestic violence or sexual har-assment by stating what conduct the allegedoffender (respondent) must refrain from do-ing.As long the person complieswith the pro-tection order, the complainant will be safe.If the respondent contravenes any stipula-tion of the protection order, the person maybe arrested. Once a protection order is grant-ed it is enforceable throughout the country.

The procedure to apply for a protectionorder is as follows:

) The complainantmustmake an affidavitand complete an application form at a policestation. Supporting affidavits by personswho have knowledge of the matter in ques-tion may accompany the application.

) These documents must be handed to theclerk of the nearest court. The court will con-sider the application immediately.

) The application for a protection order isnot limited to the complainant. An applica-tion for a protection ordermay be brought onbehalf of the complainant by any other per-son who has an interest in the well-being ofthe complainant. This includes a counsellor, health service provider, socialworker, teach-er or a member of the SAPS.

) If the court is satisfied that there is suffi-cient evidence that the suspect is committingor has committed an act of domestic vio-lence/harassment and unnecessary hard-ship may be suffered by the complainant asa result of the act, the court will issue an in-terim protection order against the respond-ent.

) The application for an interim protec-tion order may be brought at any time andnot only during office hours or on court days.

) The purpose of this interim protectionorder is to provide immediate protection tothe complainant.

) The interim protection order has noforce or effect until it has been served on therespondent.

) The court is also required to issue a sus-pended warrant of arrest for the respondent.Abreachof theprotectionorder requires thatthe respondent be arrested by the police im-mediately.

) The interim protection order is not a fi-nal order from the court, but a temporary or-der which grants immediate relief until thereturn date (the date on which the applicantand the respondent, after being given due no-tice, are to appear before court to have theprotection order made a final order). On thisreturndate, the respondent is afforded theop-portunity to present to the court reasonswhytheprotectionorder shouldnot bemade final.

) If the respondent does not appear incourt on the returndate, but the court is satis-fied that proper service has been affected onthe respondent and that there is sufficient ev-idence that the respondent has committed oris committing an act of domestic violence/sexual harassment, the court may make a fi-nal order on the return date. The protection order will prevent the re-

spondent from -) Committing any specified act of domes-

tic violence /sexual harassment;) Entering the joint residence or to enter

a specific part of the residence;) Entering the victim’s residence if they

are not living together;) Entering the victim’s place of employ-

ment/office;

) Having contact with a child or children,if it is in the best interest of the childIf onedisobeys theprotectionorder, itmust

be reported to the police immediately withthe copy of the protection order so that therespondent can be arrested and be broughtbefore court.Report any act of domestic violence to elim-

inate unnecessary suffering to the police toyour nearest police station or contact thecrime stop number on 08600 10111.

Blood stocks are currently critically lowand cut-backs at the blood banks havebeen instituted. The aim of the South African National

Blood Service’s branch in the EasternCape is to keep a five day blood stock. OnTuesday the province’s blood stock was1.9 days.“This means that when a doctor orders,

for example two units of blood for a pa-tient, only one unit will be issued so as topreserve the very little stock we have onhand and spread it evenly amongst thehospitals,” said Elize Scheepers fromSANBS Eastern Cape.“Emergency situations will be treated

differently, but we are in quite a predica-

ment.”According to Scheepers, until the

schools are open and all companies arefully staffed, they need the public’s assist-ance with keeping the patients in hospitalalive by providing much needed blood.“Donating blood is very simple, rela-

tively painless and only takes about 30minutes of your time.”The Uitenhage Blood Donor Centre is

situated at 2 Billson Street and is open onMondays and Thursdays from 10:00 to18:00.Blood donation criteria are that a per-

son must be between the ages of 16 and 65years, should weigh more than 50kg andshould lead a safe and healthy lifestyle.

WILLIE ROSSOUW

Ennatuurlik staandiemotorboot gereed asjy by die agterhekkie uitstap.

“As die son sak oor die Sondags en die kin-ders wil malvalekkers braai, is ek seker ons‘statige dame’ slaak ’n sug van verligting virdie nag se rustyd,” het Salomé bygevoeg.

=Net so gerieflik soos hul eie kamer, ingerigmet allerlei vermaak vir onweersdae, wysKatelyn en Jason Thatcher hul nessie in diebuswoonwa waarin hulle elke jaar by dieSondagsrivier kampeer.

Eastern Cape Economic Develop-ment, Environmental Affairs andTourism MEC Mcebisi Jonas has

approved the declaration of the LambasiNature Reserve in theMhlontlo LocalMu-nicipality and three others across theprovince inaddition to oneprotectedarea.Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agen-

cy (ECPTA) CEOLuxolo Rubushe has giv-en notice of the intention to declare thefour areas as nature reserves and one asa protected area in terms of the NationalEnvironmental Management: ProtectedAreas Act of 2003.The intention to declare the reserves

was published in the provincial gazette ofDecember 13, providing 60 days for peopleto make representations or submit objec-tions to the proposals.Jonas says that proclamation of the

Lambasi Nature Reserve, measuringsome 8 810 hectares, withmanagement be-ing assigned to the Lambasi CommunityProperty Association, will provide a sig-nificant supplement to the income of thepeople of the area.Jonas points out that the Eastern Cape

is a predominantly rural province with arelatively low level of economic activity, adding that environmental managementis the “catalyst” that can provide empow-erment opportunities that will in turn“propel economic development”.He says the involvement of the local

communities in the planning of thenaturereserve has ensured local ownership andhas “paved the way for the declaration ofthe area as a reservewhichwill have hugepotential to change the economic land-scape with tourism as the key driver”.The protected area is in the Jansenville

regionandwill be knownas theNoorsveldProtected Environment with manage-ment of the reserve assigned to the Noors-veld Protected Environment LandownersAssociation. One of the three proposed private na-

ture reserves is in Nelson Mandela Bayand forms part of the Royalston develop-ment that consists of 310 residential prop-erties in five villages, a hotel, frail carecentre, wildlife and education centre, dogwalking park and wedding and confer-ence centre. Some 717 hectares of the Royalston de-

velopment will be nature reserve. A sec-ond proposed nature reserve is in the Un-iondale area that will be known as theKromme Riviers Hoogte Nature Reserve. The reserve covers approximately 442hectares.The fourth, the Baviaanskloof Hartland

Nature Reserve, is in theWillowmore dis-trict in the extreme west of the province, with authority for managing the reserveto be handed to the still to be constitutedBaviaanskloof Hartland Landowners As-sociation. (Sapa)
