Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA)hosted its first everBlack-Owned Suppli-

ers’ Day in Uitenhage last Thursday, where45 black-owned manufacturing suppliers ex-hibited to over 400 delegates.

The event, which was attended by the Min-ister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, andMEC for Economic Development, Environ-mental Affairs and Tourism in the EasternCape, Sakhumzi Somyo, presented a platformfor companies that meet VWSA’s stringentsupplier criteria to profile themselves to thelocal automotive industry.“The concept of this pioneering suppliers’

day in our industry originates from Volks-wagen’s determination to expand its businessto black-owned suppliers.“This will ensure that we continue to sup-

port the economic transformation in SouthAfrica,” stated Thomas Schaefer, ChairmanandManaging Director of VWSA, in his open-ing address.“Volkswagen takes the issue of procure-

ment from black-owned suppliers as a priori-ty from both a moral and legislative compli-ance perspective.“We understand government’s priority ele-

ments of the BBBEE codes and the drive forownership. We, however, have difficultycomplying with the Enterprise and SupplierDevelopment element set out in the recently-revised BBBEE mandate.“This is not because we do not want to, but

because it is virtually impossible given thescarcity of black-owned suppliers to the localautomotive industry. In our case, this is com-pounded by our high level of local content inthe manufacture of Polo and Polo Vivo,” ex-plained Schaefer.VWSA contacted over 100 organisations,

ranging from industry associations, orga-nised businesses, business support bodiesand government agencies, to request assist-

ance in compiling a list of potential suppliers.The contact list included companies fromother industries such as Defence/Military,Agriculture, Mining, and Information Tech-nology.As a result of this initiative, Volkswagen

now has the first ever database of potentialblack suppliers to the industry and govern-ment agencies associated with the automo-tive industry.A total of 430 companies applied to be part

of the event. Applications were assessedagainst a set of criteria and finally only 45companies were approved to be exhibitors.In his speechMinister Davies compliment-

ed and thanked VWSA for their vision, forshowing their commitment to transforma-tion through action, and for providing in-sight into the challenges that the automotiveindustry faces in securing relationships withblack-owned suppliers.One of the highlights of the day’s pro-

gramme was a ministerial roundtable thatdiscussedhowblack industrialists andblack-owned suppliers could be assisted to be partof the automotive sector.

The participants were: Minister Rob Da-vies; the CEO of the Black Business Council,Mohale Ralebitso; CEO of the Automotive In-dustryDevelopmentCentre, DrDavidMason-do; and Philisiwe Mthethwa, the CEO of theNational Empowerment Fund.Other high profile guests included the chief

executives of Toyota, Ford and Mercedes inSouthAfrica,whoused the opportunity to vis-it the exhibition together with other playersfrom the industry and familiarise themselveswith the potential future suppliers exhibitingon the day. (Reporter)

well as an additional computer roomwere re-

cently opened at John Walton SecondarySchool. This is over and above the first com-puter room,whichwith the assistance of theAlumni, was sponsored and opened by Sten-den University.An intercom communication system will

also be installed at the school. Formerlearners played a major role in all of theabove upgrading of facilities at the school.“Initially, the former learners of the

school were to donate R60 000 towards theinstallation of the intercom system at theirAlma Mater.“However, former learners of yesteryear

(especially 1982, 1984, 1986 & 1989) did sowellwith income generation, that they doubledthis amount and assisted the school with ahuge amount of R120 000.”During the well attended gala evening at

the Uitenhage Indoor Centre, the class of1984 had eyebrows raised starting of bypledgingR10 000 towards the school. This setthe ball rollingwith the class of 1982 openingtheir purses, beating this amount, resultingin more than just the raising of eyebrows.“The challenge and gauntlet have now

been thrown down by the ex-learners toother learners and businesses in Uitenhageto further assist the school by donating gen-

erously towards the coffers of John Walton,”said Joseph.The Chairperson of the school governing

body, former learner Johnny Jansen, 2016Head boyRenaldo Bredenkamp andRCLDep-uty Chairperson Chante Williams, receivedthe monies on behalf of the school from theAlumni, represented by Chairperson Jeff duPreez.John Walton, also known as “Mama Wal-

ton”, is one of the oldest schools on the west-ern side of Uitenhage.

Milk prices might soon also hit consumers’pockets as a result of the serious drought andinsane increase in electricity tariffs whichnegatively affected dairy farmers.“Producer prices are currently at virtually

the same level as almost twoyears ago,whilstinput prices aremuch higher,” said Dr Chrisvan Dijk from theMilk Producers’ Organisa-tion.“Milk processors should seriously consid-

er the level of producer prices in order to ena-ble the producer to sustain production. Oth-erwise the supply of raw milk will be underpressure from June onwards.”

The serious drought has led to the steeprise in grain prices and it is expected that thehigh cost of feedwill continue untilmid-2017.“We are of the opinion that it is unfair that

the dairy farmer bears the brunt of cost pres-sures. Retail prices on dairy products on theshelf began to rise as early as March.”TheMilk Producers’ Organisation is of the

opinion that in cases where processors havealready succeeded in negotiating higher pri-ces with retailers, they should invest part ofthat increase in ensuring the sustainabilityof the dairy farmers’ production capacity.(Issued by: Milk Producers’ Organisation)

The Department of Environmen-tal Affairs (DEA) will host the

annual SAAgulhas II OpenDay thisSaturday, 14May, in Port Elizabeth.

The open day will highlight theDepartment’swork in the ocean andcoastal environment, and will alsoprovide a guided tour of the vessel,from its state of the art laboratories,to the Miriam Makeba Lounge.

Aboard the ship will be somemembers of the Marion 72 expedi-tion team, as well as a host of re-searchers and scientists from DEAand tertiary institutions who havedone research in the ocean and onthe island for the past 14 months.Marion Island is a volcanic island

that forms part of South Africanterritory and was proclaimed as aSpecial Nature Reserve Status in1995.

The world’s largest bookshop, the MVLogos Hope, is on its way for her firstever visit to the port of Port Elizabeth.The vessel is operated by the Ger-

man charity registered as GBA Shipse.V. – “Gute Bücher für Alle” (GoodBooks forAll) and consists of 400 inter-national volunteers frommore than 55countries.Most of these volunteer have devot-

ed two years of their lives to serve thischaritable endeavour, working on-board the MV Logos Hope without re-ceiving any salary.

Over the past 40 years, GBA Shipshave visited many different countriesaround the world “Bringing Know-ledge, Help and Hope” to the people ofthe world through giving access togood literature and charitable work.

In 1973 this 132.5 metres ship wascommissioned as a car ferry runningbetween Sweden and Germany, aroute she ran for 10 years.The MV Logos Hope will be in the

“Daar is streng reëls verbonde aan diekompetisie. Die deelnemers is elke Maandaggeweeg om te sien wie vaar die beste,” hetKruger gesê.

Byna elke vrou in die wêreld weet dat ditbaie makliker is om gewig op te tel as omdit te verloor. Daarom was daar ’n paar gouereëls.

“Indien enige deelnemers gewig opgetelhet in plaas daarvan om dit te verloor, moeshulle ‘n boete van R5 betaal. As ‘n deelnemernie opdaag vir ‘n sessie nie, moes ‘n boetevan R20 betaal word. Dit is nou behalwe as

hulle siek was, dan verstaan mens tog dat oe-fening nie goed is nie.”

Hierdie reëls klink dalk ‘n bietjie té streng,maar die wenners kan beaam dat om by reëlste hou, juis die goue reël vir sukses is.

Shanelle van Eck was die uiteindelike wen-ner nadat sy ‘n totaal van 23.5kg weggetrap

Progress Rugbyklub het verlede naweek sysesde oorwinning in ’n ry aangeteken nahulle sege oor Despatch Rugbyklub.

Die spanne van Uitenhage en Despatch sepak voorspelers het mekaar van die staan-spoor af behoorlik aangevat.

Progress was die span wat sommer in dieeerste vyf minute die telbord begin verand-er. Met hulle vinnige spelpatroon het hulleook daarin geslaag om in die eerste helfte hulbunuspunt aan te teken.

Despatch het in die tweede helfte metnuwe moed, vinnig teruggekom in die wed-stryd en ’n drie binne die eerste minuutaangeteken.

Progress se verdediging was rotsvas. Ver-al Curtis Sias met sy plettervatte het ondersy opposisie gemaai. Sy briljante spel het ge-maak dat hy as die speler van die wedstrydaangewys is. Progress het ’n totaal van sewedrieë gedruk teenoor Despatch se drie drieë.Die eindtelling was 39 - 26.
