“Slaggate is so groot en verspreid dat mo-tors op die sypaadjies ry om dit te vermy. Indie vakansietyd het kinders die slaggate met
bakstene probeer toepak,” het Van der Lindegesê.
In Wyk 49 is behuising en die instandhoud-ing van infrastruktuur die grootste probleme.Van der Linde sê die laaste behuisings-ontwikkeling in Wyk 49 was voor 1994.
“Ons het dit in ons wyksbegroting aanges-preek en ook versoek vir straatligte, ligte viroop areas en spoedhobbels.
“Wat inwoners van die wyk kwel is dat an-der operasionele projekte soos die Groendal-waterwerke ook op ons begroting is. Dit neembaie van ons begroting en is nie iets wat diéspesifieke wyk verbeter nie,” het van der Lin-de gesê.

“Incidents were reported where cards werestolen from rightful owners and cash with-drawalsweremadewithout the ownersknow-ing about it,” said W/O Gerda Swart, spokes-person of the Uitenhage police.The police therefore provide as a guideline
the following safety hints regarding ATMs:*Avoid isolated ATMs and using the ATM
late at night or very early in themorning. Try to select an ATM in well-lit,
busy areas.*If you feel unsafe at anATMor you are sus-
picious of individuals loitering in the vicinityof the ATM, trust your instincts, go away anduse another ATM.*Never write down your Personal Identifi-
cation Number (PIN) or carry it anywherenear your ATM card. Memorise it and keepit a secret.*Never accept help from strangerswhenus-
ing an ATM.*Take your time while doing your transac-
tion. Don’t be distracted, intimidated,or hurried into your transaction.*Never let a stranger touch your card. He/
she may have already seen your PINand is trying to switch your card.
*It is advisable not to insert your carduntil instructed to do so by the displayscreen.*Never force your card into the card
slot.*Be sure no-one is looking over your
shoulder when you key in your PIN.*Cancel your card if the machine re-
tains it by calling the card stop number.*Be suspicious of anyoneofferinghis or
her help. Don’t move away from themachine before you have called the
card stop number and make a note of thereference provided by the bank.*Ensure that your own card is returned
after the transaction.*Don’t count your cash in front of the
ATM or while walking or sitting in anunlocked vehicle as you may be fol-
lowed from an ATM.*Be watchful for people (on foot or in

GREY boxes with a little windowthat have in recent weeks beenspotted alongside major roadsin Nelson Mandela Bay havegiven rise to much speculation
on social media on whether or not these arenew traffic cameras.
In addition, these cameras, thought to benew permanent ones, have been disappear-ing as quickly as they appeared.
After numerous fruitless inquiries to themunicipality about the mysterious boxes,with even the director of traffic and licens-ing services, Hamilton Totoyi, saying thatno new traffic cameras are being installed,the DA councillor for safety, Gustav Rauten-bach, established that the boxes are in factnew Icam traffic cameras, which are not on-ly smart cameras but are mobile as well.
The Icams were spotted along the WilliamMoffett Expressway, Uitenhage Road andSettlers Freeway last week.
According to Rautenbach, the municipali-ty appointed a new service provider in Jan-uary for the supply, installation and main-tenance of the Icam digital red light andspeed violation cameras.
The contract includes the upgrading ofthe permanent cameras which were usedduring the previous service provider’s con-tract period, which ended in December lastyear.
According to the website of Traffic Man-agement Technologies, the new service pro-vider, the portable Icam, which the compa-ny designed and weighs 2 kg, has multi-purpose roles.
The device also uses Itrack for stolen vehi-cles or vehicles with unpaid fines that areon the special interest screening list andalerts traffic officers to the approaching ve-
hicle. Apart from speed checking, it can alsocapture red light violations.
According to TMT, the device also interfa-ces with hand-held electronic ticket-issuingdevices and allows for the issuing of a ticketby a traffic officer on the site.
Rautenbach said this was considered to bean enhancement of the services delivered tothe community of the metro.
He added that these portable Icams would
be moved from place to place around the cityas various sites had been identified by themunicipalities.
“However, more must be done to ensureroad safety and the enforcement of trafficlaw on our roads.
“The DA believes that the establishmentof a specialised motorbike unit and a 24-hour traffic service will further enhancevisibility and safety,” he said.

Have you ever thought, while drivingthrough streets, where the specific namescome from? The sense of identity and unique-ness that a name gives is at the heart of whynames interest us and why they are impor-tant to society.
Uitenhage was established during 1804 asthe third district of the thenCape colony. Theother districts were Swellendam and Graaff-Reinet. The initial development of Uitenhageas a town was more like a manorial estatethan a village. The first and main street wasnamed Caledon Street which was built infront of the Drostdy. The only other streetswere Cuyler Street, John Street and BairdStreet.
WithGraaff-Reinet being an important dis-trict in the Cape Colony the road leading to-wards this Karoo town inevitablywas namedGraaff-Reinet Road, as it still is named some211 years later.
The prosperity of Uitenhage was based up-on producing fresh produce and the big boomcame with the wool washeries alongside thebanks of the Zwartkops River. The lattermade Uitenhage become internationallyknown for its wool industry, as it still is tothis day. Surnames of influential individualsinvolved in this industry are still visible intown as street names like Gubb, Inggs andNiven.
Graaff-Reinet Road leads to the heart oftown and parts of it were built alongside thewater furrow which channelled water fromthe Springs on the outskirts of town. This fur-row is still visible next to the road. The fur-row channelled water to a mill which waserected close to Magennis Park.
Today Graaff-Reinet Road offers access to
a variety of established businesses which in-clude from:

Road, take a look at the local businesses andsupport them. Also notice the old water fur-row next to the golf course, which manymoons ago supplied the heart of town withwater.
Next to Graaff-Reinet Road is Willow Damwhich once hosted a historical narrow gaugesteam train called “Little Bess” which origi-nally was used in the construction of LakeMentz, now known as Darlington Dam.
The train unfortunately has been sold andlost to the town.

Various businesses on Mandela Day devot-ed their 67 minutes to Oosterland YouthCentre at Despatch.Since 1980 the Centre has accommodated
a maximum of 120 children who are placedin care of the Centre by the Children’sCourt.This includes children in need of care, or-
phaned children, abused andneglected chil-dren. Oosterland is servingmainly the chil-dren from the Eastern Cape, irrespective ofrace, culture, gender, linguistic or religiousheritage. Most of the children are fromDes-patch, Uitenhage, Port Elizabeth and withsome as far as Cape Town and Pretoria.The Centre has to submit a two year plan
for each child to the Department of Welfareto specifywhich serviceswouldbe renderedto facilitate family re-unification.Oosterland Youth Centre wishes to thank

Ubuntu Community Development Solutions host-ed one of its Child Clean-up projects on MandelaDay.
“We served 37 childrenwith ahotwater shower,new clothes and food. It being school holidays andwith various other projects being held on the day,many children did not come into town. Theweath-er was also cold and rainy, which kept many in-doors or hidden away,” said Angelique Nell fromUbuntu Community Development Solutions.
The project was blessed with various donationsfrom the community as well as local businesses.SASBOThe FinanceUnion donated R12 500worthof kitchen equipment and clothing to the project.
First National Bank staff brought bags of gro-ceries and clothing for the children and Wool-worths Uitenhage also brought many sets ofclothes to children of various ages.
“We would like to thank the staff of these insti-tutions for their time and donations to thisproject. It has assisted them tremendously,” saidNell.

David Viljoen has been diagnosed with Mo-tor Neuron Disease (MND) and relies on amotorized wheelchair called “Turbo” to getaround. He recently had the misfortune thatthe gear bearings of Turbo had worn andneeded to be replaced.
“As an MND sufferer David donates histime to supporting causes which createsawareness about MND. The Uitenhage LionsClub shares these key values,” said LionPresident Andre van Niekerk.
The Lions Club managed to obtain sparegear bearings which were donated to David.He will now be able to continue with educat-ing and assisting the community with Turbobeing back on the road again.
David was appointed as Ambassador of the“We MiND Foundation” and is also associat-ed with Friends of MND.
Both of the above are non-profit organisa-tions (NPO) that are committed to support-ing and developing awareness regardingMND in communities including Uitenhageand Despatch.
