With these words cancer survivor RonélSwartz, a sports scientist by profession, has
opted to regain her zest for life and to be aliving proof of how faith can turn the impos-sible around.
“Along my journey and fight against can-cer there were so many people who support-ed me and I want to express my deepest grat-itude as it hasmeant a great deal tome,morethan they will ever know,” said RonélSwartz from Uitenhage, who was diagnosedwith Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on 28 October2011.

“By the time I was diagnosed, the cancerwas already in stage 4 and in 90% of my bodyas it has spread to my liver, kidneys, spleen,lungs and bone marrow.
“Despite hearing the terrifying news, I ex-perienced an overwhelming sense of peaceand knew that God was in control.”
Soon after the diagnosis she started withchemotherapy under Dr Littleton at the PortElizabeth Provincial Hospital. After a yearof chemo and continuous treatment, Ronélwas admitted to Grootte Schuur Hospital inCape Town during February 2013 for a bonemarrow transplant.
Her sister was tested as a potential donor,but eventually was not a match, so an autotransplant was planned, meaning usingRonél’s own stem cells for the transplant.
“Doctors were concerned that they mightnot harvest enough stem cells for the trans-plant as I had had such a lot of chemo. Theday the harvesting started, doctors were sur-prised, as by the same afternoon they hadcollected enough stemcells for 5 transplants.Normally they hope for a count of 20. Theywere ecstatic with my count of 179.82!”
She was admitted into an isolation wardon 19 March 2013. The bone marrow trans-plant was performed a week later and Ronél
months sooner than anyone had anticipated.The nurses had never seen any patient gohome so soon after a transplant!
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart toall for your prayers, words of encouragement,phone calls, messages, hugs and all the finan-cial assistance. May God bless you.
“I believe that I have been touched super-naturally. I am forever changed. I am now inremission and I am doing very well,” saidRonél.
With Ronél’s introductory words she re-cently won a three month on-line personaltraining contract to regain the physicalstrength she once had as a personal trainerhad.

The Muir College choir started the year offon a high note and the accolades kept rollingin.They took part in the Despatch Kunsfees,where they received a gold (86%). At theATKV Applous regional competition inUitenhage, they received gold again.Thereafter the choir was invited to partici-pate in the ATKV Applous gala eveningwhichwas held in Pretoria at the end of July.Fundraising efforts of great proportion start-ed in order to get all 47 boys to Pretoria.Muir was one of 37 choirs selected to take
part in the finals of the prestige nationalATKV Applous competition. The Muir Choirreceived a gold awardwith a percentage of 82.Over and above that fantastic achievement,they received the award in the category of“Beste Hoërskool Nie-Afrikaans Moedertaal-sprekende Minder Ervare Seunskoor.”They also received a full standing ovation
on the night of their performance.Heartfelt thanks go out to themany parents
and teachers and the members of the commu-nity who helped and supported the boys asthey travelled to Pretoria and back. Withouttheir support Muir choir’s success would nothave been possible.

cruitment Trust, handed over the rugby postprotectors to a delighted Chris van Dalen,head organiser of the school’s rugby.
“This would allow us to host more rugbymatches in future without having to worryabout injuries as a result of not having thenecessary safety equipment,” said Chris vanDalen.
John Ross will continue to support Laer-skool Winterberg for the remainder of theyear and are currently helping to collect plas-tic bottles for their recycling project.

frompuremusicals to amore farcical present-ation.Modern Melodramas don’t necessarily
havemusic only, but also deal with stereotyp-ical characters and exaggerated conflict emo-tions which are the mainstay of a modern
Melodrama.The Uitenhage Melodrama which consists

They extend a helping hand on nearly aweekly basis and even spoil recipients withChristmas cakes!
The lastest society to benefit from the Li-ons, was the Uitenhage Mental Health (UMH)a non- governmental and not for profit, chari-table organization rendering social workservices to all persons with a mental disabili-ty, irrespective of age, culture, diversity, reli-gion or gender.
The Uitenhage Mental Health is situated inHenriëtta Lane and was established during1973. At present they run four homes namelyNatali House, Mary’s Place, Henriëtta Houseand Huis Lötter Bouwer. Residents from
these houses attend Drostdy Protective Work-shop, where they are trained on how to per-form domestic chores.
According to Minette van Loggenberg,manager at Uitenhage Mental Health, it hasbecome a challenge to make ends meet and re-main sustainable as a result of increasing costof food, electricity and other commodities.
“It is for this reason that we approached theUitenhage Lions Club for donations of bed-ding, towels, crockery and other items need-ed.
“The Lions’ donation also included twoboxes of Lions Christmas cakes, which trulyare appreciated by both the staff and 72residents who are accommodated at thehomes on a full time basis,” said Minette vanLoggenberg.
