Sunny skies are forecast for the 2015 AbsaKirkwoodWildsfeesweekendpackedwith en-tertainment and things to do for the wild atheart family and music lovers.

“The tents andmarquees are all up, the elec-tricity is connected, we have generators onstand-by, the biggest stage in the EasternCape is ready, and the activity on the socialmedia is reaching fever-pitch.“Everything is on track for the best Absa

Kirkwood Wildsfees ever,” says festival di-rector Jenni Honsbein.The festival takes place this weekend from

Friday, June 26 to Sunday, June 28.Designed to cater for the whole family and

all ages, this year parents will be able to lettheir children have fun in a supervised playand adventure area.“Kids will be treated like kings at the annu-

al Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees when, for thefirst time at a festival in the Eastern Capethere will be a dedicated festival within a fes-tival for children,” says Honsbein.A highlight will be a journey through the

first purpose-built Faerie Garden in the East-ern Cape.Entry will be through a giant hollow tree,

which opens into a magical village filled withfaeries, adventures, a froggie pond, lily leafsteps, trees, an enchanted bridge and more.The Faerie Village and Trail will be open

from nine in the morning until nine at night.Entrance is free and available only to chil-

dren under the age of 12.For the older siblings there are adventure

rides during the day and an array of the coun-try’s top performers on Friday and Saturdaynight.Other attractions over theweekend include

presentations in Die Burger Praat Saam Per-seel, browsing through over 350 specialist

stalls, an anti-rhino poaching demonstrationby the Addo Elephant National Park honora-ry park rangers, Boerboels, the EasternCape’s only new vehicle expo, an agricultureexpo, and mohair expo.There will also be High Tea with Hannes

The late Hemantkumar Gajjar, aformer well known Uitenhage busi-nessman who was associated withOrient Bazaar, was always preparedto make donations to the UitenhageLions Club in support of the disad-vantaged in the community.

“With his recent passing away herequested us, as his family, to con-tinue with his legacy of relievingsuffering in the community,” saidRikesh Gajjar, one of his sons.His family honoured their father’s

wish and together with The Minis-try donated meals to over 200 disad-vantaged members of the communi-ty. In addition the Gajjars also en-sured that the Uitenhage SPCAbenefits by donating 300kg of food tothe association.“His memory will live on, which

was the same as his own father. Bothbelieved that a recipe for happinessis to reach out to others rather thanexpect to be reached out to,” said Li-on President André van Niekerk.

Science Discovery WeekThe Science Discovery Week – that will be

attendedby300 learners from56 schools in theEastern Cape - promises to open the eyes ofGrade 11 and 12 learners to the intriguingfields of Science in a fun and informal setting.Daily activities will include visits to variousScience Faculty departments where learnerswill participate in subject-specific experi-ments.

cellphone messages appearing to befrom your bank, which request yourpersonal information.•Never provide your online ID,

password or PIN to anyone and neverwrite them down or share them.•Always log off or sign off at the

This is according to Albertyn Potgieterfrom the Uitenhage Camera Club, wheremembers meet every first Monday night ofthe month to practise the art of capturing themoment and appreciating the beauty of life.The club recently held its annual prize giv-

ing during which its top achievers of the yearwere rewarded for their efforts.The photographer of the year is Rodney

Rudman with Madeleine Higgs as runner-upandHendrikFrier in third position. The prizefor the most improved photographer of theyear went to Elmari van de Merwe whilst lifehonorary membership of the Uitenhage Cam-era Club was awarded to Trevor Butler.At the same meeting, Joan Hoyle achieved

the near impossible by recording two fullscores (15/15) for entries. “This equals the re-cording of two hole in ones in a single roundof golf,” said Albertyn Potgieter from the Uit-enhage Camera Club.The club is alive and well with 27 active

members entering themonthly competitions.Everymonth there is a set subject andanopen

category in which photographers compete.Monthlymeetings areheld on the firstMon-

day night of the month at 19:00 where experi-enced photographers judge and comment onthe entries in the different categories. Mid-month meetings are held where training inPhotoshop is provided.“The club strives to keep a balance between

operating on a professional basis and keepingthe social feel amongst members.“This month the club bids goodbye to Lions

Heart Restaurant, our meeting venue for thelast couple of years. The club would like tothank Ogies and Linda Coleske sincerely fortheir support to the club,” said Potgieter.

The new venue from July this year, will beVJ’s Restaurant in Graaff Reinet Road.The club invites anyone that is interested

in improving his/her photography skills tojoin them on meeting nights. “We constantlywelcome new, inexperienced photographersto the club. Anybody interested in joiningshould not feel that his/her skills are belowpar to become a member of the club.”

With the colder weather making us reach for our blan-kets andwarm clothing, theWinter Knights of the RoundTable are calling the public to join them in the fightagainst the cold and to help them spreadwarmth to thoseless fortunate.

“This is the 12th year that the Winter Knights cam-paign will run again. Winter Knights is a hands-onproject where we as Round Table collect blankets, oldclothes and tinned food from the community. These col-lections are re-distributed to various charities who arein need of the above,” said Jacques le Roux, Chairmanof Round Table 14 Uitenhage.

The success of this campaign lies in the passion of theWinter Knights who serve their community by puttingtheir hearts and souls into it. On thenight theRoundTab-lers will be dressed in their T-shirts and shorts arounda fire. “The reason behind this is that we show peopleand experience ourselves the cold dreary nights whicha massive part of our community goes through everynight of winter.

“We request the community to donate blankets, oldclothes and tinned food to assist us in our project,” saidLe Roux.

The Round Tablers have arranged with Pick n PayPenford in Uitenhage and Superspar Despatch as collec-tion points where the community can drop off donationsof blankets, clothes and tinned food. Round Table willthen collect the donations from these stores.

The community is also welcome either to drop-off thedonations on the night of the project or can contact eitherJacques le Roux on 083 458 7081 or Kevin Smith on 084411 9465 to arrange with them to collect any donations.

Superspar Despatch has jumped in to help with theWinterKnights Project and theywill be out in their park-ing area in front of the store this coming Friday, 26 Junefrom 20:00 to collect clothing on behalf of Round Table.

From the sky it must have looked like agiant dust snake crawling along gravel

roads near Graaff Reinet, winding throughvalleys and past the mountains of the Karoo.

That’s what you get when the revitalisedPolo GTi pumps adrenaline with its 141kWengine, heading on the Dassiesfontein roadtowards the farm Rietpoort close to Nieu-Bethesda.

It’s not just a test drive (what a pleasure!),it’s also to meet Rietpoort’s Douglas Stern, awell-known voice against the fracking of theKaroo.

The newwell packaged hot hatchPolo, pow-ered by a 1.8 litre TSI engine (its predecessorhad a 1.4 litre TSI 132kW engine) and 7-speedDSG transmission, hums itsway so effortless-ly, that the novice might think the Karooboasts tarred roads. The Polo GTi manual6-speed transmission version will soon be

available in South Africa. Sliding open thesun roof one smells the crisp early morningKaroo air, indigenous plants like the kapok-bos (wild rosemary) and katbos (wild aspara-gus), interspersedwith smell of sheep and cat-tle manure.

The aromas, the majestic mountains andthe vast plains of this arid part of SouthAfrica, begs the question why shale gasshould be fracked here of all places where un-derground water reserves are the essence oflife.

Thanks to the heated leather seats the crispKaroo air is neutralised. But the hot seat inwhich dynamic anti-fracking farmer DouglasStern places the government and oil compa-nies, remains. He is well-known for his fear-less comments on fracking:

) “We don’t knowwho is running the coun-try, the government or the gas and oil compa-nies.”

) “Reclamation is not restoration, wemustprotect what we have”

) “You can dowithout gas, you can dowith-out electricity but you cannot do without wa-ter. It’s the stuff of life.”

Back on the road, the turbocharged all-new1798cc Polo GTi, which Volkswagen for thefirst time offered with electronically adjusta-ble dampers, is favoured for its “Sport” selectsuspension to enjoy the engine to its full ca-pacity.

This option however, is as life-threateningon the gravel road as fracking is to the Karoo.Thankfully the new Polo GTi’s handling wasrefined and the electronic stability system of-fers a smooth and stable ride. This contrib-utes in the new Parabolicca 17 inch alloywheels staying on the track.

In his farmstead, Douglas explains that theKaroo basin is thickly laced with dolerite, amagmatic rock with a pinkish colour whenviewed on satellite photos. Cracks in thesedolerite formations allow undergroundwaterto seep to the surface, forming fountainswhich provide the Karoo with its liquid gold:

As the pinkish colour is proof of the essen-tial Karoo dolerite, the strategic touch of clas-sic GTi red insignia is distinctive in the newPolo GTi. It can be seen in the GTi logos, redstrips in the radiator grille and interior de-sign and features.

Heading back home, the drive in the PoloGTi is exhilarating. I turn on the volume ofthe re-conceptualised infotainment system,equippedwithCD-player,USBport,MP3, aux-iliary and SD-card input for external audiosource. The sound from its six loudspeakersis powerful and calms my thoughts, yetDouglas Stern’s concerns about frackingand water pollution mill through my head“Water…..it’s the stuff of life...”.
