Long queues, long waiting hours and longlists of excuses why grant applicantsmust come back to the South African Social
Security Agency (SASSA) office in Uitenha-ge, areall butgood servicedelivery, especial-ly to people who already are in financialneed.
This is according to Hannes Bekker fromthe Kruisrivier Residents Association, whoafter numerous complaints from members,visited the SASSA office himself on severaloccasions to monitor the situation.
I know of an incident where an applicantwent to the office at 03:00 on November 27thas it was indicated that the person had to re-turn on this date.
When eventually assisted the person wastold sorry come back on December 10th.The same happened and the person was toldsorry come back on the 17th, then comeback January 6th, then January 17th, Janu-ary 24th and then January 31st, saidBekker.
According to Bekker the reasons given forthe person to come back varies from itsBhishos fault, theofficeris offsick, theoffic-ers child is sick to the officer is on leave.
Grant applicants are being sent backhome on an average of 3 to 8 times before fi-nalizing the procedures. SASSA officialssaid they can only assist 120 persons per dayand Ive counted that from January 21st to27th a total of 495 grant applicants were notbeing assisted.
Bekker said other issues raised by grantapplicants include the lackof ablutionfacili-ties, rudeness by some of the SASSA person-nel and no effective management of thequeues.
In an incident an applicant arrived at23:00 the previous day just to be first in thequeue the next morning. Late arrivals willwithout any concern jump the queue. Ive
seen a person that was 30th in the queue andthen later ended at 91st. This is not fair.
Other interestingstatistics asmonitoredby Bekker include:.Tuesday, January 21st - first person ar-
rived at 03:00. At 06:00 there were 106 peoplein the queue; 07:00 - 198 people and 08:30 - 284people..Wed., January 22nd- first person ar-
rived 02:30. At07:00 theSASSAofficewas fullhouse with 92 people waiting outside. After10:00 a total of 82 people were sent home..Thursday, January 23rd - first person
arrived 23:00 (previous night). At 07:00 - 133people; 08:00 - 187 people..Friday, January 24th - first person ar-
rived 00:30. At 06:30 - 94 people in the queue;08:30 - 192 people.
