olice in Despatch, Kamesh and Uitenhage

are concerned regarding the sudden in-

crease of burglaries at residential properties

in these areas.

We request the assistance of the communi-

ty in our fight against crime, especially to

abide by general safetymeasures, said police

spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart.

According to her, burglaries in the above

mentioned areas occur mainly during day-

time when occupants have left for work.

Here are some safety measures

provided by the police:

Get involved in sector policing in your

area and keep your neighbours contact num-

bers handy.

Get aprofessional burglar alarmanddeter-

rent security with armed response that will

assist in protecting your property.

Never leave the front door unlocked while

you are in the back of the house.

Donot leavegaragedoors openorunlocked

when you are not at home.

Make provision for good outside lighting.

Outside lights that are onduring thedaydraw

the attention of thieves.

A watchdog is a good early warning sys-

tem. Keep it visible as a deterrent but beyond

the reach of strangers.

Write down the serial numbers of all elec-

tronic equipment and keep them in a safe

place.

When going away on holiday or for aweek-

end, inform your neighbours, or make

arrangements for your house to be watched

and unusual activity to be noticed.

The community is urged to be more vigi-

lant and to report suspicious characters or

vehicles to their nearest police station.

Remember to write down the registration

number of the vehicle, the colour and the

brand, said W/O Swart.

eople with diabetes living in the Despatch

and Uitenhage regions are invited to join

the Diabetes Support Group in Uitenhage.

According toMartin Prinsloo, Chairman of

Diabetes SA Port Elizabeth branch, there are

currently several active and well supported

groups operating within the Nelson Mandela

Metropole, but the need arose also to have a

support group inUitenhageaswell as Jeffreys

Bay.

The idea of support groups is to assist peo-

ple with diabetes to understand more about

how to control this lifelong condition andhow

to avoid the nasty complications of uncon-

trolled diabetes, said Prinsloo.

At this stage there is no cure for diabetes,

but it can be controlled and people with well-

controlled diabetes can live a long and

healthy life.

Anyone, any age, any racial group, any in-

come group can get diabetes. The youngest,

I have heard of is a three week old baby who

is a type 1.

Not only people with diabetes are encour-

aged to attend the meetings, but also their

families and/or carers. Even dog owners are

welcome to attend as there is an increase in

dogs being diagnosed with diabetes.

The guest speaker at Tuesdaysmeeting of

the Uitenhage Diabetes Support Group will

be Runeshan Moodley, a Biokineticist and

Sports Coach.

He completed his honours degree inBioki-

netics at NMMU and was employed at Muir

College as the school Biokineticist and Head

of Sport between 2009-2013.

He is currently the Biokineticist at the

Volkswagen PeoplePavilion Gym and also

has his own private practice, Runeshan

Moodley Biokinetics.

During the meeting, Moodley will chat on

the benefits of physical activity and exercise

for persons who suffer from diabetes.

The talk will focus on a short introduction

of the two types of diabetes and its specific ef-

fects on the patients, the benefits of exercise

on glucose control and the outcomes based on

exercise principles, said Moodley.

Iwill also talk about exercise prescription,

benefits, as well as signs and symptoms to re-

duce risks during exercise and special consid-

erations to keep in mind when exercising.

have its first meeting on Tuesday, 6th May,

18:00-19:00 at the Muirite, Muir College.

Thereafter the groupwillmeet every 1st Tues-

day of the month at the same time and venue.

he fifth monthly Uitenhage Market will

be held on Sunday, offering more stalls,

more live shows and a potjiekos competition

with good prizes to be won.

The market is held at the Old Concentra-

tion Camp off Verwoerd Drive and starts at

09:00 and as always entry is free to the public.

The potjiekos competition starts at 10:00

with judging at 14:00. The potjiekos can be

sold after the competition and there is room

for five more entrants.

A diversity of products will be on sale at

the market which range from furniture, fish-

ing tackle and accessories, dcor items, cloth-

ing, bikes to plants and herbs and crafts.

There will be plenty of food stalls in the

food court including cheese sticks, corn dogs,

burgers and hotdogs, cheese grillers, salads

and fried chicken, curry and rice, home

baked bread, pancakes, platters and much

more. Other activities include expo stands,

SPCA stand, a pedal car race competition and

local performers like Gerry Claassen and

Hansie die Bosveld Kwagga.

The High Noon Dog School will be present

as well as Tinas Line Dancers and Just

Dance Studio. Bay FM will broadcast live

from the market.

The Uitenhage Market is organised by

Women in Business and they would like to

The Cansa Relay for Life is an international

eventwith over 100 SouthAfrican communi-

ties participating in this fundraiser.

The Uitenhage Alpha Leo Club entered

a team consisting of 15 members and they

completed a total of 130 laps from 18:00 to

06:00 at the end of March at the SAPS

Kemsley Park rugby grounds in Port Eliza-

beth.

The Uitenhage Lions Club extends its

congratulations and appreciation for the

participation to the Alpha Leo President

Alana-Lee Daniell and her fellow Leos for

tions to The Cowgals and Guys group, Uiten-

hage, who won first prize for raising R 16 569

which were the most funds raised by any of

the teams participating in the event.

It goes without saying that when it comes

to community support the UD community

has both the people and the will to make a

difference, said Lion President Barend Er-

asmus.

According to Murphy, the total amount of

funds raised at the 2014 Cansa Relay for Life

is not yet available, but is expected to be in

excess of R160 000.

geneem van die skoolhoof, Wilhelm Meyer,

wat aan die einde van April aftree.

Meyer was vir die afgelope agt jaar, sedert

Augustus 2007, skoolhoof van Brandwag. Hy

het in 1983 sy loopbaan as onderwyser by

Horskool Pearson begin en was sedert 1986

by Brandwag.

Tydens sy loopbaan by Brandwag was

Meyer n geskiedenisonderwyser, koshuis-

vader by Huis Eike en afrigter van die eerste

rugbyspan. Na afloop van die saalbyeenkoms

het die hele skool n erewag gevorm tot by

Meyer se huis in Barklystraat. Die matrieks

het Meyer en sy vrou, Hantie, by hul voorhek

ingewag met 33 ballonne, een vir elkeen van

sy jare in die onderwys, wat hulle laat opstyg

het nadat hulle Meyer gegroet het.

Dedication, commitment and determina-

tion portrayed by a team of investigators,

led to the successful arrest of two suspects,

both in their twenties, for the allegedmur-

der of Uitenhage residentMathysHuman.

The body of the 80 year old Human was

found in the passage of his home on Satur-

day, 19 April 2014, by Uitenhage police.

Concerned neighbours called the po-

lice, said police spokesperson W/O Ger-

da Swart.

It is believed that he was struck over

the head with a blunt object.

A breakthrough came on Wednesday,

23April,whenmembers followedupon in-

formation and successfully arrested two

suspects at their residential homes.

The SAPS Provincial Crime Processing

Team assisted the Local Criminal Record

Centre personnel in Uitenhage with the

investigations.

The two suspects appeared in the Uiten-

hage Magistrates Court last Friday on a

charge of murder and robbery.

olkswagen of South Africa, in partner-

ship with the Quadriplegic Association

of South Africa (QASA), has converted one of

its multi-purpose vehicles in order to show-

case the mobility solutions available to peo-

ple with disabilities.

The converted CaddyMaxi Trendline, with

a 103kWDSG engine, has beenmakingwaves

since it was first showcased at the ACSADis-

ability Trade Show last November and dur-

ing its first appearance in Nelson Mandela

Bay during April.

The Caddy features a lowered floor, with

an automatic lowering suspension, and

wheelchair access for a passenger at the rear

of the vehicle. It includes a 4-point restraint

system to secure the wheelchair and occu-

pant as well as anti-slip surfaces.

The Caddy Maxi, which is usually a 7-seat-

er vehicle, becomes a 5-seater with the rear

seats removed in order to accommodate the

wheelchair platform.Thewheelchair conver-

sion can be done on any of the Caddy Maxi

models (this includes the Trendline and the

Crew Bus).

Local conversions include an AutoAdapt

Turney seat to lift a passenger into the front

seat and a VS Hydraulics push-pull hand con-

trol to enable a wheelchair user to drive the

vehicle.

At the push of a button, the Turney seat

moves through a range from inside the vehi-

cle, swivelling through the door opening and

lowering the seat to the wheelchair level and

back up into the vehicle. This provides an

easy transfer from wheelchair to car seat.

The push-pull hand control gives people

with physical disabilities the opportunity for

a degree of independence and mobility. Push-

ing the control brakes the vehicles while pull-

ing it accelerates the vehicle. Able-bodied

people may still drive the Caddy as it retains

full pedal functionality and the steering col-

umn is independent of the hand control.

The National Council for Persons with

Physical Disabilities South Africa (NCPPD-

SA) gave the Caddy Maxi Trendline and its

conversions the thumbs-up.

The universal accessibility of the vehicle

allows for independence for all persons with

disabilities, said Jakkie Pieters, National

Vice Chairman for the National Council for

Persons with Physical Disabilities South Af-

rica (NCPPDSA.
