munity a shining star is that your re-sistance always had a sense of direc-tion.“What we see in Uitenhage is not

just an example of how people canfight for freedomagainst all odds.Wealso see how a town can turn its eyesto the future, and use its freedom tojoin hands across all sections of soci-ety.“I thank you for allowing me to

join you as a citizen of this town. Ihope to emulate the heroism andsteadfastness of the residents ofUitenhage and live up to their estab-lished reputation.”Former Uitenhage Mayor and

Chairperson of the Uitenhage Tran-sitionalLocalCouncil,DrSivaPillaytold the UD News that during 1994,Uitenhage was a polarised societywith deep seated anger and frustra-tion.“You must understand that the

first and one of the largest mass re-movals of people took place herefrom KwaLanga, which was a vibrant multi-racial economichub.Then therewas theLan-gamassacre,whichmade international head-lines. Against this background, we had a pro-tracted negotiation towards a TransitionalLocal Council, a negotiation that was at astalemate without consensus.“The right wanted to close down VWSA -

as they felt it was the breeding ground for‘communists’. The left at that time also want-ed to burnVWSAas they saw it as capital thatsidedwith apartheid to exploit the disenfran-chised working class. VWSA was the heart-beat of the town economically, and we had tofind peace.”Although many towns and cities had of-

fered Madiba the Freedom of the City, hechose Uitenhage, in recognition of the enor-mous steps it had made in reconciliationputting the interest of the town first.During this time with Dr Pillay as Mayor

of Uitenhage, VWSA stabilised and openedits B Plant, Goodyear relocated to Uitenhage,and two component factories opened theirdoors in the town’s industrial area.“We signed a Rand-for-Rand agreement

with Bhisho and built seven schools and anadditional two were completed later. Wetransferred 9 400 houses to people, revampedthe Babs Madlakane Hall, widened KameshRoad, and secured funds for the KwaNobuhlemultipurpose sports centre.“Uitenhage was also the city that proposed

that we be a metropolitan municipality andlobbied for Mandela’s name.In recognition of our strides, Madiba

agreed to accept the Freedom of the Town,with Uitenhage being the first whose offerwas accepted by him.“As a town that offered him the Freedom

of the Town, we also bid him farewell,” saidDr Siva Pillay.

WHILE the Eastern Cape isgetting ready for the arrivalof the remains of formerpresident Nelson Mandelain Qunu on Saturday and a

state funeral as never seen before in thiscountry on Sunday, thousands of localmourners will get the opportunity to bid theSA icon farewell at a memorial service in theNelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Fridayfrom 09:00.

According to municipal spokespersonMthubanzi Mniki, the Eastern Cape Pre-mier, Noxolo Kiviet and members of the leg-islature will be attending the memorial serv-ice.

Mniki said the clergy representing IDA-MASA and the Council of Churches will behandling the event expected to be attendedby the Executive mayor Cllr Benson Fihla,Councillors, leaders from different politicalparties in the province and traditional lead-ers.

MEC for Social Development and SpecialProgrammes Pemmy Majodina, who is incharge of the event, has urged members ofdifferent denominations to wear theirchurch uniforms during the memorial serv-ice. Zahara, who postponed her PhendulaTour which was scheduled to take place atthe Boardwalk last Sunday, will get an op-portunity to sing the song she performs withthe people’s poet, Mzwakhe Mbuli - dedicat-ed to Madiba on Friday. Award-winning ECGospel sensation Lusanda Mcinga will also

take to the stage in honour of Madiba, as wellas other local gospel groups.

Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet saidin a statement over the weekend the per-formance and conduct of government, aswell as the conduct of people of the EasternCape during this period will have a signifi-cant bearing on public opinion in the coun-try and beyond, and all activities are there-fore material to our province’s reputation.

“We must honour Madiba with dignity andpride. The official mourning period and theState Funeral is an opportunity for all SouthAfricans and the international communityto mourn the loss we all feel – and to cele-brate Madiba’s extraordinary life and con-tribution to all of humanity,” said Kiviet.

“Let’s Work Together to make this periodone in which we maintain the dignity andproud reputation of our country.”

Mniki said residents who are unable to goto the memorial service on Friday or the fu-neral in Qunu on Sunday should not despairas there will be 13 public viewing placesavailable to assist during the events.Public viewing places are:• Uitenhage: Town Hall, Allanridge Civic Center

The R30 million PeoplePavilion, a sports, rec-reational, rehabilitation and community fa-cility operating 18 hours a day for the benefitof all Volkswagen South Africa employeesand their families, was officially opened lastFriday.The opening was conducted by the Chair-

man of Volkswagen Group South Africa, DrHubert Waltl, assisted by the Managing Di-rector of Volkswagen Group South Africa,David Powels and Chairman of Numsa ShopSteward Council, Lazola Ndlazilwama.Over the last few years, Volkswagen AG

has invested more than R6 billion in theVolkswagen South Africa factory in Uitenha-ge. This includes the opening of the mostmodern and efficient press shop in theVolkswagen Group in March 2013. Volkswa-genSouthAfricanowhasaworld classmanu-facturing facility.Labour instability a concernDuring his opening speech, Dr Waltl com-

mented: “SouthAfrica is an important strate-gic location for us even though it is relativelysmall in terms of volume produced and deliv-eries to customers.“The Volkswagen Group sees social part-

ners as key in achieving our short and longterm objectives. However the recent labourinstability is of concern to us. This cannotand must not become a trend. Business, gov-ernment and labour as well as key stakehold-ers in SouthAfricamust work in a strong andcooperative manner to create a stable envi-ronment to ensure that lengthy disruptions toproduction are avoided in the future. Compet-itiveness, productivity and stability are keyto attracting investment,” Dr. Waltl added.The PeoplePavilion, which is the first of its

kind in the South African automotive indus-

Platform for people to engageThe facility has a gymwhich ismanaged by

a qualified Biokineticist and is open to allVolkswagen employees to use for a nominalmembership fee. The gym is also used for therehabilitation of injuredVolkswagen employ-ees and is equipped with purpose built gym

equipment. There is also a clubhouse with alicensed bar and terrace which overlooks themulti-purpose main field where in-house soc-cer, rugby and cricket leagues are played.The fully equipped multi-purpose hall is

used for indoor sports such as cricket and soc-cer as well asmartial arts and volley ball. Thehall also serves as a meeting venue for em-

ployees andmanagement and can be hired byemployees for celebratory events suchaswed-dings on weekends. Regular events such asfun runs, talks on topical subjects andevening functions which often include fami-lies are held at the facility. Over 30 000 peoplehave visited the PeoplePavilion since June2013.Mandela a friend of GermanyDr Waltl and Mr Powels also took the op-

portunity to express their deepest condolen-ces on the passing on of the former Presidentof South Africa, Mr Nelson Mandela.DrWaltl said: “On behalf of our Chairman,

Circus coming to town

The big top tent is coming to Desaptch andUitenhage with McLaren Circus setting upcamp at Despatch from 13-16 December andin Uitenhage from 18-21 December.

The circus was founded by David Dallas

McLaren in 2005 and has been built upon thenostalgic memories of his childhood dream tosomeday reintroduce the magical culture andvariety of a traditional big-top circus.

Today, McLaren Circus is the biggest trav-elling circus in South Africa based on its size,variety of acts and their selection of animals.

Some of the many performances on offer in-

clude Miss Nikita from Australia on herheart-stopping single trapeze, To Yongfrom the Chinese state circus displayingspectacular balance on a unicycle, acrobatsfrom Kenya and Zimbabwe, an impressivefive man Chinese Poi act, rope acts, jug-glers and the death-defying wheel of death.

No circus is complete without clownsand the resident clowns Alick and Mariskaare sure to impress with their amazingskills.

The animal performances will include amixed caged act with America’s Casey Mc-Coy consisting of Rare White Lions, Afri-can Lionesses, Bengal Tigers and a RareWhite Bengal Tiger.

Other animal acts include Perky Poodles,Burmese Pythons, Arabian Camels, Minia-ture Donkey and Goat, Miniature Horsesand Ponies.

According to Duncan McLaren, the ani-mals at McLaren Circus are part of the fami-ly and the circus maintains a high standard

of animal care, giving them love and care 24hours a day and also consulting vets through-out the country in order to maintain the highstandard.

Careful attention is given to the care of theanimals. They receive visits from welfareinspectors and animal welfare organiza-tions regularly and are trained by means ofpositive reinforcement, patience and love.

Performances are at 15:00 and 19:00.

wys indirek gekompeteerwordmet televisie.Sy sê dat kleuters se verbeeldingnie gestimu-leer word deur oopmond na beeldmateriaalte staar nie. Kleuters moet buite speel en ’nverbeelding ontwikkel wat uiteindelik bydratot die konseptualiseringsvermoë van ’n ont-wikkelde volwassene.“Wat ’n groot voorreg was dit nie om met

soveel talentvolle kinders te konwerk en ookte sien hoe hulle vorderend ontwikkel, el-keen volgens die eie gawes en talente.”“Aan al die ouers en kleuters wat aan my

Probleme met die rioolstelsel in Bellstraat,Kruisrivier, het eienaars van sakepersele indié industriële area raadop weens gereeldeblokkasies en die oorstroom van riool enafvalstowwe in industriële persele.

Ginkel Venter, eienaar van ’n staalkon-

struksie-maatskappy en persele in die Kruis-rivier industriële area sê die rioolstank en in-frastruktuurprobleme veroorsaak dat besig-hede hulle nie daar wil vestig nie.

“Die rioolstelsel is twee jaar gelede opge-gradeer en ons as sakemanne het toe al diemunisipaliteit in kennis gestel dat dit nievoldoende is nie. Sowat 50% van die indus-

triële area is nog nie eers ontwikkel nie endie rioolstelsel kan die huidige situasie niehanteer nie.

Volgens Venter werk die pompstasie langsdie Swartkopsrivier ook nie effektief nie.Wanneer afvalstowwe in die stelsel vryge-laat word blok dit die pype, stoot op, loop ooren vloei uiteindelik in die Swartkopsrivierin.

“My frustrasie is dat ons wat belasting-betalers is op Uitenhage en ’n inkomste virdie Nelson Mandela Metropool genereer, nie’n munisipale bestuurder op die dorp het nieen ook nie mense het wat verantwoordelik-heid aanvaar om saam met ons om ’n tafelte sit en die probleme op ’n vreedsamemanier op te los nie.

“Daar behoort wedersydse samewerkingte wees. Besighede moet by munisipale reëlsen regulasies hou, maar die munisipaliteitkom nie hulle verantwoordelikheid na ten

opsigte van infrastruktuur nie.“Die probleem word nie opgelos nie. ‘n On-

afhanklike kontrakteur word ingeroep om ge-blokte dreine leeg te suig. Ek is seker dit kosdie belastingbetalers van Uitenhage ’n astro-nomiese bedrag. Waarom word die geld nieeerder aangewend om die infrastruktuurvoldoende op te gradeer nie?

“Hoe kan ons verwag dat die munisipaliteitaan die mense van Uitenhage ‘n diens leweras daar nie mense in bestuursposisies is watop die dorp is nie?

“Ons het ons eie infrastruktuur wat instand gehou moet word. Hoe kan ons verwagdat die dorp vooruit moet gaan as mense inPort Elizabeth, wat geen belang in Uitenhagehet nie, die besluite neem?

“As Uitenhage nog op sy eie was, met al dieindustrieë en belastinggeld wat ons betaal,kon die dorp een van die florerendste dorpein die land gewees het.”

The annual Springs Summer Music Festivalon the outskirts of Uitenhage this year fea-tures the well-known and popular The Rock-ets amongst the artists performing on stage.

The Rockets spend more than half of theyear performing outside of South Africa with

performances in Australia, Seychelles, theMiddle East and other African countries.They have had numerous record successesand received two SAMA nominations namelyBest Pop Performance and Best Contempo-rary Dance Performance.

Other musicians to be on stage at theSprings Summer Music Festival include Les

& Leanne, Chapter 3, DJ Superman and GregO Gee. The music festival will be held at theresort on Monday, 16 December from 10:00 to19:00. No alcohol will be allowed and the en-trance fee is R200 per car with no more thanfive people and R600 per taxi with no morethan 15 passengers.
