At the global position S33 46.998’ E025 23.004’ youwill find a variety of aviation activities in cele-bration of the Uitenhage Aero Club relaunch onSaturday.

“All interested flying enthusiasts are invitedto join our vibrant group of aviators. We willhost a fly-in for fellow aviators from otherregions. There will be various aviation relatedactivities and stalls,” said Roger Thomas fromthe Uitenhage Aero Club.

The Uitenhage aerodrome has a long and in-teresting history. Redhill Aviation Club and theAlgoa Microlight Aviation Club (AMAC) werethe forerunners to the Uitenhage Aero Club.These clubs have roots dating back to late nine-teen sixties.

“In 2008 the South African regulations gov-erning micro flight were changed and the sportbecame part of a larger discipline – that of thenational pilot rating. This rating or licence en-compasses light sport aviation (aircraft lighterthan 650kg), touring motor gliders, convention-ally controlled microlights and weight shift cat-egories,” said Thomas.

The Uitenhage Aero Club officially came intobeing on 23 June 2011 at a special general meet-ing of AMAC, giving rise to the change in nameand the core objective to serve all forms of avia-tion.

The Uitenhage Street Carnival willbe staged.

“There have been rumours thatthe carnival is cancelled, but thisis not true,” said Francois Greeff,President of the Rotary Club ofUitenhage.

“Over the last few years therehas been a lot of controversy andissues regarding the identity of thecarnival, who the role players areand whom it belongs to. After a lotof discussions between the RotaryClub of Uitenhage, the NelsonMandela Metro and various otherrole players, it was decided thatthis yearly event will continue.”

The Rotary Club of Uitenhagewill stage this annual event during

the weekend of 2-3 December 2011.The Uitenhage Street Carnival

was started 24 years ago by the Ro-tary Club of Uitenhage as a fund-raisingproject to sustain the chari-ty work that is done in the commu-nity. This event has becomesynonymous with the opening ofthe festive season.

“The Rotary Club of Uitenhagewill remain the main organisingbody for the event, with the sup-port of the Metro and its support-ing divisions such as traffic, disas-termanagement, safety and securi-ty and also the local police.

“As of this year we will also beimplementing a ‘zero tolerance’policy with regards to the rentingof stalls and the stall holders’ safe-ty and security,” said Greeff.

According to him all paying

stallholder will be placed inside anenclosed area for stalls only and nostalls and trading outside ofdemarkated areas will be permit-ted. Bookings for stalls can be donewith Rotarian Eurika Greeff on0084 679 8612.

Public must note that stalls arelimited and will be allocated onfirst come first served basis.

“We are planning an interestingentertainment program to suitmost cultural groups.

“A street plan with all activitiesand affected areas will also bemade available shortly,” said Gre-eff.

It is illegal to set off fireworks ina residential area.

With Guy Fawkes being held onSaturday, the police would like to is-sue a stern warning that action willbe taken against those ignoring theLaw.

“We will have extra vehicles on du-ty on Guy Fawkes night. Reckless be-haviour and swinging of burningtyres will not be tolerated,” saidLt.Col. Vivian Tembani, station com-mander of Despatch police.

“Mess with fireworks and you will

feel the full force of the Law.”Parents are urged to look after

their children and to know what theyare up to.

According to W.O. Marianette Ol-ivier, parents will be held responsi-ble and fined for any wrong doingsby their children.

The designated area where fire-works can be lit in Despatch is at theopen area near the waterwheel inMain Street.

The Uitenhage area includes:Lovebird Street in Tiryville, open ar-ea between Kamesh and MadunaRoad, open area in Gerhard Drive,Uitenhage central sports field.

In KwaNobuhle the open areas be-tween Mqolomba Road and JabvuRoad as well as the open area be-tween Ponana Tini and Tize Street.

Councillor Pieter Terblanche is re-questing residents to take note of thedesignated areas and also warn resi-dents who will have fireworks innon-designated areas that finescould be issued in this regard.

“In thepast therewere cases of ani-mals being traumatized and resi-dents are requested to safeguard andprotect animals.

“Let Guy Fawkes fall softly onthese sensitive ears,” saidCouncillorTerblanche.

Vandag wissellanseerhoogtes tussen 350 meter tot 450 meteren vlugte duur selfs langer as 5 ure!Die Eastern Province Gliding Club is gestig in1964 op Uitenhage gestig. Huidiglik is daar so-wat 28 lede wat elke Sondag by die Uitenhagevliegveld byeenkom waar die klub se lootsasook klubhuis geleë is. Die klub besit 3 vlieg-tuie waarvan 2 sweeftuie is en een gemotorise-erde sweeftuig.Volgens Aldo Basson, voorsitter van EPGC, isdaar ook omtrent 17 ander sweeftuie en gemo-toriseerde sweeftuie op die vliegveld in privaatbesit.“Lansering vind plaas deur gebruik te maakvan ‘n draad wat deur ‘n V8 enjin om ‘n dromopgerol word en in die proses die sweeftuigsoos ‘n vlieër in die lug intrek,” het Bassongesê.As alternatief word ‘n Lambada vliegtuig assleeptuig gebruik om sweeftuie so hoog as 1000meter bo die grond te kry. Motorklub opDespatch gestig

Verskeie motorentoesiaste opDespatch het oor die afgelopepaar jaar baie gepraat oor diestigting van ‘n motorklub. Diewoord is versprei en op 3 Septem-ber 2011 is ‘n vergadering gehouwaarna Concept Crew motorklubgestig is.

Die klub se eerste byeenkomswas in Oktober. Hulle het met 19voertuie uit verskeie jaargroepe(1930, 1950, 1960, 1970) sowel as ‘npaar nuwer voertuie, die jaar-likse Eastern Cape Street Rod enCustom Cars Club funksie onder-steun.

Volgens Pierre Janse van Rens-burg is die doelstellings van dieConcept Crew motorklub om“sorg en bewaring van voertuieaan te wakker en om belangstel-

ling in gesinsverband te bev-order.”

“Alle belangstellende motoren-toesiaste is welkom om by dieklub aan te sluit en daar wordgeen beperkings op die jaar modelvan ‘n motor geplaas nie. Alleaansoeke is egter onderhewig aangoedkeuring,” het Van Rensburggesê.

Arries is ‘n verwer, tuinier en nut-sman van vele talente wat nie ge-bruik maak van publieke vervoer oftaxi’s nie, maar sy tekkies aantrek envanafMandelavillewerk toe en terughardloop.

Plaaslike sakevrou, Lynette Vols-chenk, het Arries onlangs verras met‘n splinternuwe paar tekkies sowelas ‘n volledige stel hardloopklere.

“Ek bêre hierdie nuwe skoene virdie 42.2km Aspen marathon wat op3 Desember in Lorraine gehou word.Dit gaan my vierde keer wees wat ekaan hierdie marathon deelneem enek kan nie wag om dit met die nuweskoene te hardloop nie,” het Arriesgesê.

Hy het reeds 10 Muirite maratonne

voltooi en gaan aanstaande jaar sytweede Two Oceans aanpak waar hyonder die top tien in die kategorie 35-39 jaar wil eindig.

Arries was ‘n kranige rugbyspelerin sy jonger dae en het as slot uitge-draf. Dit was na sy eerste landloop-kompetisie wat hy besluit het omeerder op die hardloop te fokus. Dees-dae is hy ’n lid van die Nedbank atle-tiekklub.

“Om te hardloop hou my op die‘regte’ pad. My Meester is voor en ekkom agterna. Met my nuwe skoeneweet ek dit gaan net beter gaan,” hetArries gesê.

Kort op die hakke van die Amarok dubbelka-juit-bakkie, stoot Volkswagen vanjaar ‘n as-trante enkelkajuit-weergawe in die kompeter-ende mark van werksesels. Hierdie eentonnermet die grootste laaibak in sy klas, teiken beidedie individuele koper en die vloot-mark.

Al meer vrouebestuurders is deesdae te sienagter die stuur van hoëwiel rygoed en diébonkige Amarok is ‘n aantreklike opsie in ‘nmeer aanvaarbare prysklas as die dubbelkajuiteweknie – juis omdat die koper verseker is vandie tipiese VW kenmerke van kwaliteit, duur-saamheid en veiligheid.

Die kragstuur, hoogteverstelbare sitplekke,ruim kajuit, praktiese bekleedsel, lugverkoe-ling, sentrale sluitstelsel, elektriese venstersen -spieëls, en skaflike klankstelsel versekeruiteraard ‘n gemaklike rit. En sou ‘n mens langs die pad nog oplaaigoedraakloop, kan jy dit altyd in die ruim spasieagter die sitplekke inlaai. Dié enkelkajuit isslegs ‘n aks van ‘n liniaallengte korter as som-

mige dubbelkajuitbakkies. Die afwesigheidvan vloermatjies maak dit baie prakties engerieflik om skoon te hou.

Met die afdraai op die grondpad, al diepertussen die berge in, was dit verstommend hoestabiel die Amarok bly. Niks van ‘n gewiegas jy oor ‘n hobbel of los gruisklippers ry nie.Die vasvoetigheid is danksy die bakkie segewillige enjin en gevorderde veerstelsel.

Op die roete om by die olienhout-hoekpaleuit te kom, moes ‘n mens eers deur ‘n rivier-loop alvorens jy die tweespoor bergpad konaandurf. Gelukkig was die watervlak baielaag, nie dat dit ‘n probleem sou wees as daarwater was nie, want die Amarok kan met ge-mak deur water van tot ‘n halwe meter hoogry.

Die Amarok beïndruk juis waar die steiltesswaar raak. ‘n Passasier wat ‘n geswore aan-hanger van kompeterende handelsmerke is,moes brom-brom erken dat VW ‘n bielie van‘n bakkie gebou het.

Die Amarok trap ferm teen hoogtes af enwaarborg ‘n ewe stabiele rit met genoeg dryf-krag ten spyte van ‘n swaar vrag. Die nuts-ligte wat die laaibak verlig, maak aflaai in diedonker maklik. Twee klein nutsligte is geïn-stalleer in die hoë dubbeldoelstoplig aan dieagterkant van die kajuit.

Die Amarok enkelkajuit is ekonomies met‘n algehele dieselverbruik van 7.6 lit-er/100km met die 90kW weergawe en 7.9 lit-er/100km vir die 120kW bakkie. VolkswagenSA het ses eenton-modelle met turbo-aange-jaagde dieselenjins in die Suid-Afrikaanse en-kelkajuitmark gestoot.

Terloops, die plaaslike mark word beskouas die wêreld se grootste enkelkajuitmark.Mededinging is hard, maar die Amarok isharder en is besig om stof in sy bekende med-edingers se oë te skop. Hierdie ryding voldoengewis aan VW se nuwe verkoopspreuk van“working hard and working smart”.

Die vasvoetigheid van die VW Amarok enkelkajuit in die berge is danksy dié bakkie se gewilligeenjin en gevorderde veerstelsel.

Cats to defend itsklawerjas title

The longest serving local klawerjas captain,OrlandoKerridge,will leadhisCatsKlawerjasClub team in defending its Champ of Champi-ons title next week.

The Champ of Champions competition willbe played from 11 to 13 November at JubileeHotel in Uitenhage.

Kerridge started his career as klawerjascaptain, leading the then formidable SpadesKC back in 1990. In his ranks he played withthe Richards family, starting from Rowan,Ronel and their parents, “Aunt Lollo” and“Oom Robbie”.

In the late 1990’s Kerridge and his klawerjaspartner Dean Bacon, were rated in the top 25of “all-timegreatest players” in theSouthAfri-can Klawerjas.

Cats KC joined the Uitenhage Klawerjas Un-ion in 2002 with Kerridge as captain and wentfrom strength to strength. He has been a cap-tain of klawerjas teams for the past 17 years!

Unfortunately they will be calling it a dayfrom playing top level klawerjas after theChamp of Champions competition.

“Kerridge and Bacon will surely be missedfor their great skills and love for the game,”said Patrick Baartman from the UitenhageKlawerjas Union.
