Uitenhage High School matriculants of 2014 achieved a85.9% pass rate, which was a 12.2% increase on theachievement of the class of 2013.
These results were a good sending-off present for retir-ing school principal, Timothy Heynes.
According to Heynes, the pass percentage was not theonly aspect which improved, but also the quality oflearners. Eighteen learners achieved a total of 29 distinc-tions (versus 15 learners of the previous year). Top of thelist was SAIPA’s top Accounting girl Sumaiya Moses whoachieved 5 distinctions. She attained distinctions in Ac-counting, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematicsand Physical Science.
Walid Hassen scored 4 A’s. His 95% in Accounting wasthe highest for any subject in the school, whilst he alsoscored well in Mathematics (92%), Physical Science andLife Orientation.
Ighsaan Salie achieved distinctions in CAT, Life Scien-ces and Mathematics.
“The year 2014 really was an exceptional year for Uiten-hage High School. The matric results came as no surpriseas all the school’s stakeholders (parents, teachers andlearners) worked very hard to make the school’s 50thyear anniversary a most memorable one,” said Phillip
of 2014 and threw down the gauntlet for the class of 2015.Williams said: “It will be a hard act to follow, but a bet-
ter achievement is possible with hard work by teachers,parents and especially the learners.

St Colmcille Secondary School in Kirkwoodis faced with various social challenges ofpoverty and abuse, but has made quality ed-ucation their priority and focus.
The school’s matriculants of 2014 have ob-tained a 81.4% pass rate, which is 21.9% in-crease over the 59.5% pass rate in 2013.
According to Principal Ian Balie, theschool has shown a massive improvementin its matric results over the last two years.
“It has obtained a 81.4% pass rate in 2014,up from 59.5% in 2013. This was a real posi-tive shift considering the pass rate was 36%in 2011 and 35% in 2012,” said Balie. “The
success should be attributed to dedicated staffand learners.
The grade 12 parents also gave all the sup-port as requested from the school. We congrat-ulate the class of 2014 and wish them all thesuccess for their future.”
St Colmcille Secondary School took part inthe District Matric Improvement Plan in theform of Winter and Spring school pro-grammes and conducted its own weekendstudy camps, once a term.
“We also had a week study camp, whichtook place a week prior to the commencementof the final exam.
“All of these projects were financed by theschool. This was done as our learners do nothave conducive conditions at their homes,”
said Balie.Matriculants especially achieved success
in the subjects of Accounting, English FAL,Life Science and Tourism. The school ob-tained a 100% pass in these subjects. Mathe-matical Literacy learners achieved a 92.5%pass rate.
“The school will sustain its support pro-gramme for the class of 2015 and is confidentof continued improvement in its quality ofmatric results,” said Balie.
The school, which celebrated its 75th anni-versary during 2014 and has a rich history ofproud learners, would like to thank their cir-cuit manager Ms. X. Selana for her positiveencouragement and support throughout theyear.

ipated in the Worldwide Week of Servicefrom January 10 to 16, specifically to feedwhere there is need.
One of the service projects included a Feedthe Hungry campaign specifically aimed atproviding meals to needy children duringthe school holiday.
“The Relieve the Hunger Global ServiceAction campaign involves the participationof the world’s largest service provider thatconsists of 1.35 million members. Presentlythe action campaign serves 25 million peo-ple and has set objectives to reach their goalof serving a 100 million people by 2017,” saidLion Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage Li-ons Club.
Concerning the local community the Feedthe Hungry campaign was aimed at provid-ing meals to those who attend “no feeschools” as well as the homeless.
To this effect the Uitenhage Lions Cluband Alida Davis of the Underprivileged Chil-dren’s Ministry combined to organise aFeed the Hungry project which also in-volved donations received from local busi-nesses.
The project took place in John Street,Uitenhage and more than 500 underprivi-leged children and homeless were providedwith meals.

Africa’s oldest open water swimming event, cele-brates its 91st anniversary this year, having been firstswum on January 20, 1924 in Redhouse.The 2015 festival takes place at Cannonville on the
banks of the Sundays River, with two days of familysporting events. Saturday the 14th features the WimpyFamily 5km Run and a brand new and exciting eventto the Eastern Cape, the Super Sprint Triathlon teamrelay, whichwill comprise amixed teamof three peopleeach completing a 250m swim, 6km MTB cycle and a1.6km run.The Triathlon relay, sanctioned by Eastern Province
Triathlon Association, is expecting to be well support-ed, given that it offers an exciting and achievable op-
portunity for all to complete a triathlon.The afternoon programme features a Family Half
Mile swim, the Disabled Mile and the Speedo wetsuitdouble mile swim, another new event on the pro-gramme this year.The increasingly popularWakaberry Kids across the
river races for children 12 years and under will takeplace from 11:00 on the Sunday with the 8 years andunder going first, followed by the 10 and unders andthen the 12 years and under swimmers who aren’t tak-ing part in the Mile event.A special race, founded by SA Paralympic champion

In celebration of the club’srich history a memorial ser-vice and reunion will be heldin Uitenhage on February 1st.The club’s history dates
back to 1890 when ReverendCharles Bloomer Jecks of StKatharine Anglican Church inUitenhage selected a team ofyoungsters from the churchchoir and entered them in thelocal junior rugby league. Atfirst they were called the StKatherine’s Choir rugby team,but during 1891 the Swifts Rug-by Football Club was estab-lished.By 1894 they joined the East-
ernProvinceRugbyUnion andduring 1896 delivered its firstSpringbok player, F.R. My-burgh. During 1906 all fiveteams of Swifts were top ontheir respective leagues in theGrand Challenge finals.According toCecilHayward,

The Uitenhage Klawerjas Union (UKU) of-ficially is the strongest union in South
Africa after being announced the SouthAfri-can Klawerjas Board of Control’s Crownchampions for the past three years.
“At the beginning, 21 years ago, the bigguns likeMitchells Plain Klawerjas and oth-er Western Cape clubs reckoned us to be awalk-over. They were wrong,” said PatrickBaartman, Uitenhage Klawerjas Union’sMatch & Recording Secretary.“Sincewe established theUitenhageKlaw-
erjasUnionduring 1994,wehavegrown fromstrength to strength and are proud to now bethe strongest union of the South AfricanKlawerjas Board of Control.”During the earlier years, the Klawerjas
players of Uitenhage and surrounding areasfor 12 years played under the banner of theEastern Province Klawerjas Union.
