“Ons het aan die bevelvoerder van die Addo-polisiekantoor verduidelik hoe belangrik dit isom die sindikaat wat vir die diefstal en vandalis-me verantwoordelik is, aan die man te bring.

Volgens Deon Joubert, voorsitter van dieSondagsrivier-landbouvereniging, is daar aan-duidings dat buitelanders agter die meeste vandie beweerde oortredings sit.

The Alpha Leo Club, consisting oflearners fromUitenhage andDespatch,participated in the Cansa Relay for Life

held in Port Elizabeth and managed to raisea total of R6 098.

The Leos joined hundreds of people at Vic-toria Park High to relay for 12 hours in cele-bration of cancer survivors and also to re-member those who have lost the battleagainst cancer.

With the Leos fundraising prior the event,they raised the funds through the Muir Col-lege teacher bidding, Hoërskool Brandwag’sPinkCivvies day, Strelitzia’sLeapYeardona-tions, Uitenhage High’s cake sales and thefundraising on the relay night which consist-ed of popcornand cupcake sales andmanningthe gate.

Captains Aphiwe Zinto, Trent Burness andtheir teammanaged to complete 107 laps dur-ing the Night Relay for Life event. For thisthe Leos received the Best Youth Teamaward.

“As much as we put in - in all that we did,I just did not expect that our team fromUiten-hage would win any award,” said Leo Presi-dent Aphiwe Zinto.

The Leos themewas about Skin Cancer andbeing Sunsmart. They urge everyone to besunsmart and to use the correct sunblock,

(preferably with the Cansa logo) also to pro-tect their pets from the sun.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technolo-gy Centre in Uitenhage will be hosting an ex-citing educational holiday programme nextweek for learners.

“The theme of this holiday programme is‘Sustainable use of natural resources’. Thepurpose is to instil the right attitude inlearners towards the use of natural resour-ces,” said Singathwa Poswa from the NMBScience & Technology Centre.

“The learners will betaught regarding the im-portance of natural re-sources and ways of pre-serving them. There willalso be an hour long mathssession every day.”

The holiday programmewill run from 22 to 24March, daily between 10:00and 14:00. Learners aged 6up to 16 years are invitedto attend.

The cost is R10 per childand a limited number oflearners will be accepted,therefore booking is essen-tial. The centre is situatedin Lower Drostdy Street,Uitenhage.

Frans Swanepoel, ’n sakeman vanDespatch met belange in eiendom en ken-nis oor munisipale aangeleenthede hetgesê, meeste inwoners is nie bewus dat diegedeelte van die oprit wat strek vanaf diepad se randsteen tot op die grens van dieerf, munisipale eiendom is nie.

“Inwoners wat hierdie gedeelte metplaveisel of sement verfraai moet na regteeers aansoek doen by die munisipaliteit,aangesien dit hulle eiendom is,” hetSwanepoel gesê.

Wanneer ’n inwoner aansoek doen omdié deel van die oprit te verfraai, word’n dokument onderteken waarin diemunisipaliteit nie verantwoordelik gehoukan word vir enige skade soos byvoor-beeld na die opkap om ’n waterlek te her-stel nie.

“Die rede hoekom die gat vir meer as ’nmaand oopgelos is weet ek nie. Dit isonaanvaarbaar.

Gewoonlik is daar ’nkortwaarnemings-periode na herstelwerk om seker te maakalle waterlekke is wél herstel. Maar ditduur definitief nie ’n maand lank nie.”

Swanepoel sê voorts, “ons weet almalteen dié tyd dat daar ’n groot tekort aanmunisipale mannekrag is. Dit jaag mensese stresvlakke op om te wag vir dienstewat nie gelewer word nie.

The new AddoMarine Protected Area (MPA)has been proposed by the Minister of Envi-ronmental Affairs together with another 21MPAs in South Africa.

“Marine Protected Areas are crucial forhealthy marine ecosystems. They are benefi-cial for the recovery of exploited fish stocks,ensuring the sustainable exploitation of ourmarine resources, hence jobs and food securi-ty.“They also offer safe havens for many spe-

cies and top predators’ populations,” said DrLorien Pichegru of the Coastal and MarineResearch Institute, Nelson Mandela Metro-politan University, Port Elizabeth.According to her Algoa Bay is home to

more thanhalf of theworld’sAfricanpenguinpopulation. Their population crashed by 70%

in the last 10 years, and they need this MPA.“Algoa Bay also hosts beautiful reefs, the

largest pods of bottlenose dolphins in theworld and hundreds of whales coming to givebirth here every year.”

Nonzwanga Sylvia Thisani, a former educa-tor, bade farewell to classrooms and during2006 started a three-bedroom guest house at28 Lilac Road.

Bookings increased and it was needed to ex-pand. Today Rainbow Guest House offers sixrooms and a two bedroom family unit, eachequippedwithair conditioner,DStvhotel pack-age, a separate entrance, wifi and secure park-ing.

“It took us 10 years to be where we are. But,it can take only a few seconds to mess it all up.Therefore I am a stern believer in doing yourbest every time and keeping the standards.

to set up a fund to where academicallydeserving and financially needy students canapply, even if it is just to pay their registra-tion fees.Ghauderen Coetzee-de Vos, an organiser of

Association (MIWA) show that many SouthAfrican drivers text while driving. In an ef-fort to combat this distracting behaviour,Arrive Alive launched a campaign claiming“If you text and drive you’re a killer”.

Les McMaster from MIWA said: “Textingwhile operating a vehicle is a seriously dan-gerous activity, but distracted drivingmeans more than just texting. It’s any activi-ty that takes a person’s attention away fromthe main task of driving.”

These activities could include eating anddrinking, grooming, adjusting the radio ortalking to passengers, to name just a few.

According to the National Roads and Mo-torists Association, drivers who regularlysend text messages spend up to 400% moretime with their eyes on the phone instead ofon the road.

“When you’re driving, you have to thinkabout a lot of things: your speed, the trafficlaws, the direction you’re going in, road con-ditions, pedestrians, other cars around you.

It’s a long list, and if you’re not focussed onthe task at hand, there is a greater chance thatyou’ll be involved in an accident.”

For many of us, our car has become our mo-

bile office, so changing these habits can bedifficult.However, this is not a strong enoughcase for putting yourself and other drivers atrisk, believes McMaster.

“Making driving safely your prioritywhilein your vehicle is the first step in the rightdirection. It’s really a matter of being disci-plined and appreciating the risks involved.

“Passengers can also help drivers remainfocussed by reminding them when their at-tention is not on the road and assisting themwith anything they may need.”MIWA offers these tips for safer driving:. Don’t read, eat, change clothing or groom

yourself while driving.. Don’t allow passengers to distract you.

Ensure small children are buckled up beforedeparting and if they require attention dur-ing the trip, rather pull over to assist them.

. Don’t let animals roam around the vehi-cle, rather put them in a pet carrier whichis properly restrained.

. Create a playlist with your favourite mu-sic so you don’t have to search for songs.

. Let your friends and family know youwill not answer anyphone calls or textswhiledriving.

. Keep a safe following distance givingyourself time to react if required
