HAWAIIRENOVATION

Over the past 25 years, thegrowing trend has been toreplace traditional window

air conditioners with new duct-free, split-system (DFS) models.

The advantage of DFS systemsis in the “split” between outdoorand indoor units. This configura-tion makes the systems quiet, en-ergy efficient and easy to profes-sionally install. And unlike un-sightly window units, DFS sys-tems provide users with almosttotal control over AC comfort, costs and aesthetics.

Now a new line from global ap-pliance innovator LG Electronicsis bringing even more options tosplit-system purchasers. WithLG’s multi-flex system, a singleoutdoor unit can power up tothree interior fan coil coolingunits. That reduces outdoor clut-ter and noise.

It also increases options, as awide variety of interior units canbe tailored to the design of eachroom. Choices even include ArtCool series units, an LG exclusive, where the air conditioning unitactually enhances interior decorwith a mirror face or even a frame

you can customize with the pic-ture of your choice. Now you canbe cool and comfortable withouthaving a bulky air conditioningunit compete with your decorat-ing scheme.

For even more cooling power,LG’s Multi-V system uses variablerefrigerant flow (VRF) technologyto serve up to five indoor fan coilsfrom a single outdoor unit. Forlarger houses, it’s the ideal way todistribute cooling throughout thehome and provide the ultimateenergy savings with VRF technol-ogy.

Moreover, all of LG’s DFS andVRF systems offer super-quiet op-eration, ultra-high energy efficien-cy for low operational cost, andindividual zone control so eachroom can have its own tempera-ture setting or just be turned off.Corrosion resistant outdoor coilsare standard, perfectly suited toisland climate conditions.

For more information aboutLG’s new split-system air condi-tioning systems, contact CarrierHawaii, the locally owned distrib-utor, at 677-6339 or visitlghawaii.com.

It’s hot, and before the summer isover it will probably get hotter.Statistical data show that our

Hawaii temperatures have histori-cally been highest in August andSeptember.

So, if your air conditioning sys-tem is older and perhaps not func-tioning at peak efficiency, it may betime to consider upgrading to amodern, "greener" system that cansave both energy and dollars. Orperhaps, you’re concerned about airquality in your home or office. Ifso, consider an A/C accessory de-signed expressly to remove impuri-ties from indoor air.

According to Aldrin Villaher-mosa, president of AMV Air Condi-tioning, there are numerous sys-tems available today with a multi-tude of special features — from asimple system to cool off just oneroom to a more complex installa-tion that can handle all the squarefootage under your roof. Better yet,

there are systems that can be setfor zone cooling and even operatedwith a timer.

"New technology even allows youto control the air conditioning inyour home or office with a SmartPhone or a web browser,” said Vil-lahermosa, who will be a featuredspeaker at the July 6 Build New OrReDo seminar at the HomeworksConstruction showroom. “Let’s sayyou’re out for the day and you wantto cool your home an hour prior toyour getting there rather than wasteenergy by running a system all day.Give it a remote command whileyou’re sitting in traffic. When youget home, you’ll walk into a room atjust the right temperature.

"Everyone’s needs are differentso our approach is to educate theconsumer about the many optionsthat are available to them along withcomparative costs. If you are re-modeling or building a new home, then that’s the time to make a deci-

sion about what kind of air coolingand-or purifying system you wantinstalled. Homeworks Constructionwill call us in at the planning stagesso the A/C can be incorporated intothe budget and, if the client wishes, financed into the home improve-ment or construction loan."

After his presentation, Villaher-mosa will be available along withthe other guest speakers and Home-works builders and remodelers forone-on-one consultations.

Representatives from FergusonBath and Kitchen Gallery, LightingConcepts, and Servco Kitchen Dis-tribution Center will also be onhand.

The free Build New Or ReDoseminar will be held in the Home-works Construction Showroom at2111 South Beretania St. Free parkingis available in the Homeworks park-ing lot at the rear of the building.

For directions and reservations, call Homeworks at 955-2777.

As Hawaii residentsprepare to cele-brate Indepen-

dence Day, perhaps nowis the time for home-owners to consider op-tions for energy inde-pendence.

Renewable energyharnesses the power ofthe sun, wind, waves andearth to provide cleanenergy from a sourcethat cannot be depleted.Did you know thatHawaii residents obtainmore than 80 percent oftheir energy from burn-ing oil? This same oilmust be shipped to ourisland and, for the mostpart, is purchased from aforeign country.

“It is imperative wewean ourselves off of oilas our primary source ofenergy production, for amultitude of reasons,”said Eric Carlson, Princi-pal with RevoluSun,Hawaii’s leading resi-dential solar company.“In addition to the com-plexities associated withoil drilling and the pur-chase of foreign oil, we

need to remember it’s afinite resource. We willone day run out of it. Sowhy continue to use oilin areas where we canharness alternative ener-gy sources?”

Hawaii is unique inthat the state has foursources of renewable en-ergy readily available toit. Solar energy is themost advanced of theoptions, with generousfederal and state tax in-centives in place to en-courage both localhomeowners and busi-nesses to purchase aphotovoltaic system.

For those interested inlearning more about so-lar energy options, tech-nology or financing, lo-cally owned RevoluSunoffers a variety of freeeducation options.

A Home’s Character Can Be Enhanced withHardwood Architectural Details

Walk into any olderhome and you’ll al-ways find a lot of

hardwood details — wain-scoting, crown moulding, fire-place surrounds, spindledstaircases, even chair rails —because decorative trimworkused to be standard in newhome construction. But afterWorld War II, builders beganreducing the amount of trim, using just enough to covergaps around windows, doorframes and between walls andfloors. Unfortunately, thatcost-reducing practice contin-ues with most new home con-struction.

As a result, today’s roomsoften appear plain and fea-tureless, lacking the warm or-namental details that wouldotherwise provide architec-tural character. But they don’thave to be plain, accordingto the American HardwoodInformation Center, Hard-woodInfo.com. Enhance the

character of your home by in-stalling or upgrading its trim.It can be as easy as it sounds.Consider some of these cost-effective ways to add hard-wood details to your home.

WainscotingWainscoting is a type of

paneling most often used todecorate the lower three feetof a wall. It comes in differentstyles, from simple flat pan-els to a raised design or bead-board. It is installed with nails, screws, glue or a combinationof these and is usually toppedwith crown moulding or achair rail. During colonialtimes, it served to protect thebottom portion of a wall fromwater damage arising from acracked foundation. Today, itcontinues to ward off damage— scratches, dings and thelike — while adding warmthand great architectural inter-est to any room.

In living and dining rooms,

dens and libraries, it adds aformal look, especially whenfinished in a dark stain orpaint. A white finished wain-scoting in a living room sug-gests more of the country cot-tage look. And the wall abovethe wainscoting panels canthen be painted to achievethe desired look.

Chair railA chair rail is functional as

well as decorative. It helpsprotect areas where chairbacks might damage the wall.Various chair rail styles areavailable. They can be a singlepiece of wood, called a mould-ing profile, or two or more dif-ferent mouldings can be com-bined to create a built-up pro-file.

Chair rails are often usedalone, but are also used totop wainscoting to give it aclean edge. When teamedwith wainscoting, it will havea groove underneath that al-

lows it to be placed onto thewainscoting, so be sure to in-stall the wainscoting first.

Crown mouldingAny moulding or group of

mouldings installed betweenthe wall and a ceiling iscalled a cornice. It providesa decorative transition be-tween the wall and ceiling, and can improve the appear-ance of almost any room.

Crown moulding is themost popular cornice. It is athin length of wood installeddiagonally to the corner ofthe wall and ceiling. Likechair rails, crown mouldingscan be a single piece ofwood, or can be built up of anumber of different profiles.

Since crown moulding isplaced at an angle to thewall, the cuts needed to formcorners are more complicat-ed, so you might want tohave it installed by a profes-sional.

Does your kitchen feelmore like Julie’s than Ju-lia’s? No need to be con-

cerned. If Julie could learn tomaster the art of cooking inless than a year, you can de-sign your own chef’s studio ina fraction of that time. FollowJulie’s footsteps and take yourlead from those who knowkitchens best — professionalchefs.

Zack Bruell, chef and ownerof four renowned Clevelandrestaurants — Parallax, Table45, L’Albatros and Chinato —shares his secrets regardingthe best kitchen tools and de-sign.

“While the kitchen is the so-cial center of the home, it’salso the place that requires themost functionality. It’s whereyou prep food, cook, serve, eatand clean. That’s a lot of activ-ity for a relatively smallspace,” says Bruell.

Keeping things coolAny chef will tell you that

one of the secrets to cookinglike a pro is using fresh ingre-dients. To keep your produceand meats crisp and moisteven longer, Bruell recom-mends investing in a profes-sional-grade refrigerator.

While these may take signif-icantly more floor space thanstandard refrigerators, profes-sional-grade options featurethe ability to store more itemsin multiple large compart-ments, and set separate tem-peratures for the different ar-eas. Some brands offer ex-treme innovation, with mi-crochip-operated defrost cy-cles, touch-screen pads andslide-out storage. LG even of-fers the added luxury of a 15-inch screen that can handleDVDs.

If you’re concerned that aprofessional-grade refrigeratorwill put a damper on your

kitchen decor — notto worry. Many mod-els, including the GEMonogram All-Re-frigerator, can be per-sonalized to matchthe cabinetry in yourkitchen and includeyour choice of han-dles.

Over-the-top ovensProfessional-grade

cooktops, such as the48-inch Dacor Epicure Dual-Fuel Range, offer two self-cleaning ovens (both at 21inches deep), an infrared gasbroiler and six gas burnerswith continuous grates overthe top. In addition to sheercapacity, professional-graderanges have burners that canhandle everything from slowsimmering to high-speed sear-ing, and small pots to largewoks. Some cooktops even dothe work for you — GE’s

Monogram Electric InductionCooktop features a pan sizesensor, which automaticallyadjusts the heating element tothe size of the pan.

Faucets for foodiesThe workhorse behind any

professional kitchen is thefaucet — or faucets in manycases. “You need a good faucetwith a restaurant-style, pull-down or pullout sprayer forcleaning fruits and vegetables,

but it’s also important for fastand efficient cleanup,” saysBruell.

A second faucet to considerin a chef-inspired kitchen is apot filler. These faucets, whichare installed over a range, notonly provide a distinctly in-dustrial look, but they also areextremely efficient. The newShowHouse Modern Pot Filleroffers a quick-fill rate of 5.5gallons per minute, which en-

SavingsFor many families, household

budgets are still tight in the wakeof the recession. But whether

times are tough or not, it makes senseto save money wherever you can. There are plenty of small ways tostart cutting costs. One of the bestplaces in your home to start saving isthe laundry room.

Whether you’re single, share a two-person household or have a big fami-ly, finding ways to save money in thelaundry room can have a big effect onyour budget — and not just in theamount you spend on detergent. Someadjustments to how you wash and dryyour clothes can have an effect onutility bills, the amount of time youspend on laundry and even your im-pact on the environment.

Here are some ideas for smart waysto save that start in the laundry roomand have results that go well beyondits walls.

Cut down your dry cleaning bills. It’stough to find a closet that doesn’thave any “dry clean only” labels, butto reduce the amount of money youput into those garments, consider adry clean alternative like FreshCloz.Using state-of-the-art ozonic technol-ogy, pure ozone circulates it throughyour clothes, which helps with odorremoval and preserving your gar-ments. You can simply slip yourclothes inside the garment bag, carryon doing the rest of your laundry, andcome back to fresher clothes. It allowsyou to cut back on the number of trips

you make to the dry cleaner, which isa major expenditure. Its environmen-tally friendly nature also makes it agreat green dry cleaning alternative.

Create your own laundry deter-gents. Armed with borax, washingsoda and grated bar soap, you canmake a highly effective laundry deter-gent for a very good value. There areplenty of step-by-step instructionsthat can be found on the Internet. Anextra tip is to add a few drops of yourfavorite essential oils to create a cus-tom scent that you’ll love.

Remember to keep it cool. One of

It’s most likely one ofthe top reasons you’vebeen putting off that

bathroom makeover orremodel — you’re notsure where to begin. What color theme willyou use? Do you want apedestal sink or a furni-ture-style vanity? Willyou incorporate anygreen faucets or fixtures? And, with all the deci-sions to make, will it alllook good together andstill perform well?

These questions, andmany others, should be atthe top of your list whenyou start mapping outyour next bathroom proj-ect. Luckily, many manu-facturers have made iteasier in recent years foryou to answer thosequestions in a painless,

affordable way.“We’ve created several

full bathroom suites offixtures, furniture andfaucets,” says Ed Detgenfrom Danze Inc. “The el-ements of each collectionwere literally made foreach other, which makesyour job easier.”

So what should youlook for when you’replanning your next bathor powder room project? Here are a few things toconsider when choosingthe key pieces:

Sink and vanity —Choices are abundantwhen it comes to the sinkarea of a bathroom. Forthose smaller footprintpowder rooms, or wherestorage isn’t as critical, consider a pedestal sink.

If a pedestal doesn’tmatch your taste orneeds, furniture-stylevanities can have a sig-nificant impact on aroom’s decor and add ex-tra storage.

Faucet — This can beone of the most notice-able accessories in theroom and one that home-owners and guests inter-act with the most. Makesure you choose a styleand finish that is consis-tent with the overalldecor. A soft brushednickel or warm oil-rubbronze finish can add adistinct detail to the feel-ing of the room. If greenoptions are important toyou, explore Wa-terSense-certified faucetsthat can reduce water us-

age by 30 percent, with-out affecting perform-ance.

Toilet — This is one ofthe best places to gogreen in your bathroom.High-efficiency toilets

use 1.28 gallons per flush(gpf), saving 2 or moregallons of water duringeach use compared tomany toilets installed inthe 1980s and prior, andsaves 20 percent com-pared to more recent 1.6

The solution to feelingorganized may be as closeas your cabinetry. the easiest steps you cantake is to wash yourclothes in cold water. It’llsave you money on heat-ing, and it wastes less en-ergy.

Let it all — your laundry, that is — hang out. Ingood weather, let the dry-er sit idle and break outthe clothespins. Hangingyour clothes is a muchmore eco-friendly option, but it also adds up to sav-ings on your utility bills.Plus, there’s nothing quitelike the pleasant smell ofclothes that have beenhung out to dry in thefresh air. If it’s a rainyday, try using dryingracks inside your home.Clothes might feel slightlystiff initially, but theysoften up shortly afteryou put them on.

Cut your drying time.Sometimes, you just needto use the dryer instead ofhanging things out to dry.To cut down on the timeyour items spend spin-ning around in thewarmth, add dryer balls.Often made from felted

wool yarn or scrap fabricfrom old sweaters, theselittle laundry aids dramat-ically cut drying time, which is kind to your wal-let and the environment. They can be purchasedpre-made or you canmake your own — thereare plenty of resources onthe Web that provide de-tailed instructions.

Some of these solutions— like the FreshCloz dry

clean alternative — caneven help your clotheslast longer, which canadd up to major savings. You can find more in-formation about it atwww.freshcloz.comOnce you see how muchyou can save by takingthese simple steps in thelaundry room, you’llwant to look for clevercost savings in everyroom in the house.

Plenty of prep spaceEvery good chef knows

that cooking requiresplenty of counter space.Bruell applies a “less ismore” rule here, as youdon’t want to overcrowdcounters with too manysmall appliances. Choosethe most-used items, such as a coffeemaker, toaster, mixer andblender, to have out in

the open and place otheritems and equipment in anearby pantry or cabinet.Just be sure to keep themeasily accessible — andwithin three or foursteps of your primarywork station.

mond Cabinets’ Logix organization sys-tem, which offers a pull-out shelf with acharging station that’s big enough tohold an entire collection of mobilephones, MP3 players and other smallelectronic devices, plus four convenient,out-of-sight shelves for organizing othersmall items that make up your “stuff.” Amagnetic white board and pencil holderare also placed conveniently on the in-side door, providing a place to jot downmessages and help everyone keep trackof who’s going where.

A similar version of the cabinet comeswith the slide-out charging station, op-tional shelves, plus key hooks and coathooks to accommodate anything fromhats and scarves to dog leashes — plusenough floor space to stash a bag of petfood or a small basket of toys.

Stay on track Change is good. But it’s even easier

with modular shelves that you canchange without the hassle of pullingout the family toolbox. One of the sim-plest systems is the EasyTrax cabinet, which lets you add, remove or shift upand down up to five slide-out shelves.Need a place to tuck away tall appli-ances like the blender and foodprocessor? Remove a few shelves.Have too much of a canned goodthing? Go with all five. You canchange the configuration into one-,two-, three-, four- or even five-shelfcombinations at varying heights.

As an added feature, the modularcabinet also comes with a SmartStopguide that prevents the outer doorsfrom slamming shut, so you not onlyget to feel organized, but you get somepeace and quiet, too.

styling and color greatlyimpact how the toilet canenhance the room’sdecor.

Shower system — Yearsago, homeowners had ahandful of choices forshowerheads. Today, there are hundreds ofstyles, functions, finishesand components that cancomprise a home’s show-er system. This is a re-cently discovered area ofthe bathroom that can re-ally show off your person-ality and can help youcreate a unique retreat.Tastes range from build-ing a “shower spa” withwall- and ceiling-mountedshowerheads, to conser-vation-minded showerstalls equipped with Wa-terSense-certified show-erheads.

Bath accessories —Careful selection of bathaccessories is key to cre-ating a finished look toyour project. Once again, homeowners have a hugechoice. Whether it’s theornate styling of an old-world towel ring, or thesleek lines of a contem-

porary towel bar, makesure to select accessoriesthat match your room’sfaucet, sink and other ele-ments.

Storage — Homeown-ers can’t seem to getenough storage in mostbathroom floor plans.Again, choosing a furni-ture-style vanity cangive you extra storagespace, as can many well-designed mirrors. Besure to match the finishand styling of the vanityand other pieces in theroom.

“Coordinating bath-

room pieces is easierthan ever,” adds Detgen.“Choosing pieces thatare created as part of acollection is definitely atime-saver and a reassur-ing way to know the de-sign details were takencare of for you.”

Starry evenings and backyard en-tertainment go hand-in-hand.When the sun goes down, the

right landscape lighting can turn anybackyard into a stylish outdoor livingspace. With so many options, it’s easyto fill your nights with light to en-hance security, decor and entertain-ment.

“Lighting your landscape is likeworking with a canvas with you as theartist,” says Jon Carloftis, garden andlandscape designer. “Consumers aredemanding outdoor lighting solutionsthat offer great design and conserveenergy and money. It’s important tochoose lighting with an eye towardyour home’s architectural featuresand practicality.”

Carloftis offers these simple tips tolight up your nights:

Keep your lighting simple. Startwith one main lighting source andadd accent lighting to highlight gar-den features. Don’t over-light. Itwastes energy, is costly and unap-pealing.

Skip the complicated wiring andcostly electric bills by using new so-lar lights.

For illuminating your entryway, deck and patio, use lighting thatmimics moonlight, like new solar-powered lighting systems.

 Stagger path lights. Be creative.

With energy costs rising, peopleare looking for ways to cut costs.Decorative lights illuminate specificareas but draw on energy, havewires that need to be hidden andneed replacement bulbs. Twenty-first-century solutions — like solarenergy — harness the power of thesun to illuminate the night.

“Now everyone can get in on thesolar revolution,” says Marc Jensen, marketing director for Byron Origi-nals Inc., makers of the new SunLight180 System. The latest high tech solar-powered outdoor lighting appliancescome in styling that’s durable and low-maintenance. They harness the sun’spower by day, and when providedwith enough light energy from thesun, last throughout the night.

“SunLight 180 delivers warm whitelight equivalent to a 40-watt incandes-cent bulb, packaged in a sleek design,”says Jensen. “Plus, consumers cansave on costly energy bills with thelow-voltage, high-efficiency LED fix-ture that requires no electrician orspecial wiring.” For more information, visit www.Sunlight180.com.

So whether you want hours of light-ing for your entryways or for eveningoutdoor entertainment, look to thesun to light up your nights.
