New Construction Remodels Maintenance Trouble Calls
One of the biggestchanges to lightingis the creation of
Energy Star light bulbsand fixtures. They’re atleast four times as effi-cient as traditional ver-sions and deliver lightquality that consumersnow expect.
While incandescentmight be relatively inex-
pensive, they use fourtimes as much energy asan Energy Star qualifiedbulb, which means theycost about $30 more overthe bulb’s lifetime. Theyalso burn out much morefrequently, so your re-placement cost is higher.
Most often consumersare disappointed with theresults of using a CFL,
and it’s becausethe wrong CFLwas used in thewrong applica-tion.
Energy Starcertified bulbsmust last formore than 6,000hours; with En-
ergy Star-certi-fied fixtures, thatr e q u i r e m e n tjumps to 10,000hours. Those fix-tures are energy-
efficient and meet colorquality requirements.
Making improvementsto your lighting is one ofthe fastest ways to cutyour energy bills. An av-
erage household dedi-cates 5-10 percent of itsenergy budget to lighting.Using new lighting tech-nologies can reduce light-ing energy use in your
home by 50-75 percent.
• New retrofit LED re-cessed downlights useonly 18 watts, are dimma-ble, and replace popu-larly used 75- or 90-watthalogen spotlights. Light-ing Elegance stocks theHalo ML706830 LED fix-ture, and this is an easy,do-it-yourself screw inreplacement for moststandard residential andcommercial 6-inch hous-ings. This 600 lumen fix-ture is a comparablereplacement for the com-mon 65 watt incandes-cent reflector lampcommonly used in re-cessed lights.
• An easy way to con-trol your lighting is to in-stall a dimmer switch toquickly change the moodof a room. A softer lightresults in a more com-forting, relaxing atmos-phere. Dimming the lightby just 10 percent morethan doubles the bulb life.If you are using a CFLbulb, make sure it is de-signed to be dimmable.
• Use task lighting; insteadof brightly lighting an en-tire room, focus the lightwhere you need it. For ex-ample, use under-cabinetlighting for counter-topsunder cabinets or pen-dants over your island.Lighting Elegance nowdisplays a fantastic under-cabinet fixture made byKichler Lighting. Avail-able in four sizes, the LEDundercabinet lights useonly 9 watts of electricityfor the most common

Handyman Services
There is a legal limitof $1,000 for handy-man work, above
which a contractor’s li-cense is required to protectconsumers. But there havebeen so many unlicensedand scammer rip-offs andhorror stories that moreand more homeownerswant the legal protection ofa licensed contractor forany size job, even for those
that cost a mere $100. There is a growing prob-
lem of homeowners gettingpoor work and being stuckwith paying out, but not re-ceiving fair value. Evenworse, some contractorsdon’t answer their clients’calls, or they simply disap-pear.
Calling all unlicensedpurveyors of constructionand home improvement
services “unlicensedcontractors” is reallystretching the truth, since most who callthemselves that and
claim a vast body of expe-rience and excellence atbargain prices don’t de-serve to be called contrac-tors at all.
HPS Construction Ser-vices is offering a solutionthat doesn’t cost home-owners any more money, but offers the comfort of alicensed handyman serv-ice.
HPS president and gen-eral manager Gerry Peterssays the company will alsotackle jobs under $1,000,sometimes as low as only$100, for all of Oahu, andnow most of Maui, too. Ineffect, clients get licensed-quality work and assur-ances, yet don’t pay anymore than for the guy offthe street with a laddersticking out of his trunk, soto speak.
Peters says he has seentoo many instances in his30-plus years in Hawaii in
which amateurs or un-trained handymen, or evencontractor workers, wouldundertake plumbing orelectrical work whichwould result in floods andfires. Peters says thatHawaii clients trying tosave a buck can end uppenny-wise but verypound-foolish when theirinsurance company refusesto pay for the 10 floors offlooded condos below, or afire.
Peters says HPS offersexpert termite and water
damage repairs inside andout; also drywall, and con-crete cracks/spalling re-pairs, and basically A to Zservices. Likewise, HPS hasbecome a leader in provid-ing kitchen and bath re-models and upgrades withan average of 25 percent to50 percent savings for sin-gle-family homes and con-dos and townhouses.
HPS and Peters can bereached at 847-4400. Or,visit the websites hpsconstructionservices.com andhurricaneprotect.com.

Photovoltaics is cre-ating quite a buzzamong Hawaii
homeowners. Also knownas PV, photovoltaics is aform of solar. “But in-stead of heating yourwater, it actually pro-duces electricity,” ex-plains Chad Matsumoto, who co-owns AlternativeElectric with BronsonApana.
Although the up-frontcosts may be high, thereare many benefits thatmake PV a wise overall
investment, and Mat-sumoto offers these ex-amples:
Lowerr monthlyy electricbill.. This may be the mostrecognizable benefit. Al-ternative Electric offersfree consultations and es-timates on how many PV
panels are needed.A company represen-
tative visits a home andlooks at its roof design, electrical set up, electri-cal consumption and ahomeowner’s budgetbefore recommending asuitable system.
Taxx credits. Althoughthe initial cost for PV ishigh, many people may
overlook the tax credits.State and federal solar en-ergy income tax creditscan reimburse up to 65percent of the cost of asolar system.
Preservess thee naturalenvironmentt andd im-
provess airr quality.Hawaii’s electricity ismainly generated fromfossil fuels. By producingelectricity with a PV sys-tem, Hawaii can decreaseoil demand and greenhouse gas emissions.
Investmentt purposes. APV system is one of thebest investments a home-owner can make. Aftertax credits, the paybackon a PV system is approx-imately six to eight years, and maybe even sooneras the cost of electricityrises.
After the system paysfor itself, a homeowner
can enjoy 17-19 years ofvirtually maintenance-free electric production.A PV system also in-creases the value of ahome. It increases equityand it’s a hot seller, ac-cording to some Realtors.
Alternative Electric de-signs, installs and main-
tains solar photovoltaicsystems.
“We take care of allphases of PV installa-tions, so homeowners getthe best quality materials, design and workman-ship,” says Matsumoto.“We are also a full-serv-ice electrical contractoroffering residential andcommercial electricalservices as well as photo-voltaics.”
Hawaii’s year-roundsunshine makes it one ofthe most efficient solarenergy sites in the world. For a free estimate/con-sultation, call AlternativeElectric at 630-6741 or285-3663.

Island Style Furnishingsin Kaneohe is proud tointroduce Australis
Leisure brand all-weatherfurniture. It was developedin Australia to withstandthe harshest of environ-ments.
The key to its successwas choosing durable andappealing materials. Woodhas the timeless classicbeauty that everyone loves.
Merbau wood (also knownas kwila) is regarded as oneof the most durable and sta-ble timbers in the world. Itgrows in Northern Aus-tralia and across SoutheastAsia, so it was well-knownas the wood of choice formaking docks, decks andflooring. Merbau is the per-fect wood for outdoor fur-niture. It is twice as hard asteak, which makes it resist-
ant to abrasion, pit-ting or roughening.Prior to manufac-ture, the merbau iskiln-dried to amoisture content of12 percent. This sta-bilizes the structureof the timber so itdoesn’t warp or
crack.The furniture

Kitchen remodelingcan be a dauntingtask, but cabinet
refacing makes it easieron many levels.
Refacing can actuallysave you money becauseit keeps the existing cab-inet boxes in place. Withrefacing, only the exteriorof the cabinets — doors, drawers and hardware —are replaced. This meansyou can change the entirelook of the cabinets bychoosing a new color andstyle.
Refacing also is an easyway to update yourkitchen at less than 50percent of the cost of buy-ing brand new. By notripping the cabinets outof the kitchen, you saveon labor and materials.
Many have that oneproblem area: the pantrythat seems to have 10-year-old expired cans inthe back; the corner cabi-net that you haven’t ex-plored in years; the lostcorner cabinet that youknow has storage space
somewhere back there, but you just can’t get to it.
Essential Cabinet Refac-ing Inc. can help you findsolutions to these prob-lems by doing simple car-pentry modifications oradding some cabinet in-serts or special hardware.Best yet, the job need notcost you thousands ofextra dollars to do it.
If a new kitchen is whatyou desire, contact Essen-tial Cabinet Refacing Inc.immediately. The com-pany builds new custom
cabinets in itsshop. Everythingis made to orderby a team ofskilled staff mem-bers. They havebeen in business21 years and pridethemselves onhigh-quality workoffered at reason-able, competitiveprices.
