Making your

Your bed, the onlypiece of furnitureintimately connect-

ed to your personal ener-gy, is the most importantpiece of furniture in yourhome from a feng shuistandpoint. It should makeyou feel safe enough tocompletely let go of theday’s challenges and openyourself up to renewalthrough rest and intimacywith your partner.

You cannot overesti-mate the feng shui of yourbed with respect to yourwell-being and the qualityof your relationships. Youare most vulnerable when

sleeping in your bed, so itshould support you inevery way.

Three points for adesirable bed

Three structural detailsqualify a bed as feng shuipositive:

• Good height. The bed-frame must be raised to acomfortable height toallow for circulation andflow of energy above, below and around it. Abedframe that is too highoff the floor can emphasizefeelings of insecurity, while one that is too low to

the floor can keep you“grounded” in difficult sit-uations for long periods oftime.

• Good headboard.Subconsciously, your headneeds protection and sup-port. A headboard sup-ports you in the same waythe back on a chair offerssupport when you sit forlong periods of time.Wood or upholsteredheadboards are favoredover iron or metal.

If you have no head-board, place your bedagainst a wall, not under awindow, for a greater

sense of stability. Place apicture of a mountainabove your bed to furtherthe energy of safety andstability.

• Good mattress. Buy amattress you love. Themore comfortable the mat-tress, the better you sleepat night and the better youfeel during the day. In thecase of some beds, like theCalifornia King, the boxspring should be in onepiece, not two, represent-ing unity between the part-ners or between the partsof oneself.

photovoltaicsChoosing a photo-

voltaic system (PVsystem) for your

home or business is a first-time experience for most. The evaluation process forchoosing a system and/orcontractor can be difficult.Pacific Islands Construc-tion’s goal is to educate theconsumer and hopefullyhelp in this educationprocess.

Pacific Islands Con-struction feels it is impor-tant that only well-madesystem components inclu-sive of inverters, solarmodules, roof flashingsand racking systems beused. Through our

research, we know thatthere are differences thatare not always presentedor explained to the con-sumer. Over the long haul, consumers will see the dif-ferences or experience theproblems in their purchas-es. Pacific IslandsConstruction’s goal is tosee that only high-qualitycomponents are used inour systems, providing thelong-term benefits of solarenergy.

Here are some essen-tials to consider:

1.We have receivedcountless reports

regarding roofs leaking

after solar has beeninstalled. The roof pene-trations for the rackingsystems that hold the solarmodules require properroof flashings to ensurethe roof will not leak. Alsothere is the issue of winduplift. A single screwevery six feet will not stopmodules from flying off aroof under high winds.Consumers should relyand expect that the flash-ing details are roofing-industry accepted to keepwarranties in place. As acautionary note, most roofwarranties are voided if

improper flashing detailsare installed. Older roofsshould be evaluated priorto installing a PV system.Do not accept a boltthrough the roof withsome caulking as accept-able.

2.All solar modules arenot made the same,

and the long-term survivalof the module is depend-ent on the quality of theconstruction. Companieslike Kyocera build extrasinto their modules tostrengthen the construc-

tion, and in our corrosiveenvironment, this isimportant.

3.Solar manufacturersare going out of busi-

ness at an alarming rate, soresearch their financial

recommendations from the Pan-tone Color Institute includeTangerine Tango, Solar Power,Bellflower and Cabaret. Try addinga splash of these vivid hues to helpalter your mood and boost vitalityand enthusiasm. Repaint a wall, bookcase or front door for a boldcolor burst. Or sprinkle splashes of

color with new area rugs, pillows orwindow treatments.

Go green, save greenAmong the top green home trends

is renovating to reduce your home’scooling load. Seal up leaks or installnew windows and doors. Low-main-tenance Pella 350 Series vinyl win-dows and patio doors feature a pre-mium look in an energy-savingdesign.

Energize your entry No time for major renovations?

Weekend projects, like installing anew front door to welcome guests todinners, graduations and get-togeth-ers, can transform your entrywaywith minimal hassle and cost.Consider installing a 36-inch-wideentry door to add more room tomaneuver. Town & Country BuildersLLC (T&CB) is a licensedgeneral contracting design

build firm that has been servingOahu residents for the past 32years. The company specializes innew and custom homes, remodels, second story additions, designerkitchens, bathrooms, Americans with Disability Act(ADA) modifications/improvements as well as multi gen-erational homes, and offers full construction services.

What defines a professional licensed builder? Is it because the company’s combined strength of all its

employees adds up to 30 years in business? Perhaps thecompany is a member of the Better Business Bureau andis in good standing with no complaints, or because thereis a reputation in the community for completing first-class quality construction work? What about a companythat has a strong commitment to ethics and echoes themessage to its employees? Would you agree that a profes-sional builder would be knowledgeable about all con-struction phases and would conduct business in a profes-sional manner with customers, sub-contractors and hisstaff? Would you expect an outstanding builder to pro-vide homeowners with a construction project scheduleenabling everyone to have a clear understanding of thecontractor’s commitment to a definite timeline to com-plete the work? Would a reputable firm not obtain a build-ing permit for the project when it is required?

Customers’ confessions It is amazing to hear the responses from customers as

to why they hired T&CB to complete their constructionproject. Just last week, for example, a customer said, “theother building contractors made appointments, but never

showed up.” The T&CB staff’sresponse was, “why would abuilder make an appointment witha potential customer and not showup or call?”

Another comment was, “I wouldlike to have my project completedright this time.” Apparently there

was an unlicensed contractor involved the first time andthe results were disasterous. Then there are numerouscomments that T&CB has zero complaints, great cus-tomer satisfaction, performs quality workmanship and isa good communicator. All of these are good reasons tocall today for your next project. We satisfy customers!

An important part ofany kitchen orbath remodel is

taking measurements anddrawing a visual map.Measuring the existingcabinets will give you thecorrect sizes for replace-ment cabinets.

WallsThe first step is to

measure the walls where

the new cabinets will beplaced. The best way tomeasure a wall is fromone corner to the oppo-site end. It is always help-ful to have someone elsehold one end of the meas-uring tape when measur-ing large areas.

Next, measure the ceil-ing height, starting fromthe floor. Measuring theceiling height will deter-

mine the general heightof the wall cabinets forproper counter space.

Sometimes there arespaces that will make tak-ing accurate measure-ments difficult. In thesesituations, it is better toround down to the near-est inch rather thanround up. Cabinets for akitchen design withmeasurements rounded

down will be sure to fit;the extra space canalways be hidden with afiller piece. Whereaswhen rounded up, awhole cabinet may haveto be changed to a small-er size to fit.

Openings and obstaclesIt is important to jot

down all openings orobstacles, such as win-

dows, doorways or ceil-ing beams. Measure theplacement of the obsta-cle from one end of thewall and the sizes (widthand height) of the obsta-cle.

AppliancesPlan on keeping the

existing appliances? Takemeasurements of theirsizes to ensure the cabi-net design will allowspace for them to fit.Similarly, when gettingnew appliances alongwith new cabinets, take

note of the new sizes. With existing or replace-ment appliances, measurefrom one end of the wallto one side of the existingappliance. If the plan is torelocate appliances to adifferent area, however, make a note of where.

Sink(s) and PlumbingFixtures

Measuring from thecenter of the sink to onewall will give a reason-ably accurate idea of theexisting plumbing andwhat cabinet sizes maywork. Also, take the meas-urements of the existingsink or new sink so thesink cabinet will be ableto fit. Although plumbingcan always be moved, using the existing setup ismost cost-effective.

You have to have been living in acave for the last year or two tonot know that mortgage interest

rates are at a record low. Never before inmany homeowners’ lifetimes have ratesbeen so low, making dreams come truefor both home ownership and upgradingyour lifestyle and surroundings.

This is especially the case with homeimprovements that become a permanentpart of the home and will never have tobe replaced. One of those rare gems isgood wood flooring. As Shirley PaiHilton of Pacific Imports Internationalwill tell you, one of the best ways to

invest your remodeling dollars is with ahigh-quality wood floor. Not only areyou and your family able to enjoy itsbeauty every day of the year, but thevalue that it adds will remain for the lifeof your home.  Unlike the majority offloor coverings, the right wood floor canbe something that lasts a lifetime andbeyond.

Cabinets, tile, bath fixtures, carpeting, windows, roofs, paint — they all need tobe re-done in a number of years, due towear and tear or aesthetics. But a classicwood floor, with proper maintenance, will last the lifetime of the house or

beyond. Statistically speaking, manytypes of wood flooring, even with re-sanding, can last 80 to 100 years.

So let’s start by asking what are thebasic types of wood flooring most com-monly used in Hawaii?

The most traditional form of woodflooring is called unfinished solid. Thisis a solid piece of wood that’s beenmilled into flooring, and will be sandedand coated in your home after it hasbeen nailed down. It’s generally consid-ered the most “high-end” of wood floorsdue to the ability to customize the endproduct, but also due to higher installa-tion cost (man must do what the finish-ing machine usually would in a factory).

Next on the scene, we have pre-fin-ished solids. This is again a solid piece offlooring, but the sanding and coating isdone at the factory using sophisticatedmethods, such as UV curing, and theonly work done in your home is to nailor glue it down. Your floor is ready tolive on almost the minute it goes down.

And most recently, there is engi-neered wood flooring, such as theKahala Floors line. Engineered flooringinvolves taking a precisely cut slice ofthe flooring wood and pre-installing itonto plywood. Contrary to popularassumption, this is not done to be stingyon the wood! Rather, it is done to pro-vide a more versatile, stable form ofwood flooring. Engineered woods can beinstalled below grade (whereas solidscannot) and they can also be floated(whereas solids must be nailed or glueddown). Most engineered flooring is

sanded and pre-finished in a factory, andwith the right brand of engineered, youare looking at a lifetime product that canbe refinished several times, just like asolid.

Pacific Imports invites you to attendits next free “investment” seminar,“Wood and Stone Flooring 101,” onSaturday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. Feedback onthe seminars has been nothing but posi-tive and they will be well worth yourtime, especially with the private sale forattendees only. Properly maintain-ing a driveway, garage, carport or

parking lot surface is thekey to extending its lifeand enhancing its ap-pearance. Driving sur-faces that have beenallowed to deterioratecan also be a contribut-ing factor in vehicledamage and liability, according to Jim Higgins, owner of Seal ProsHawaii.

“An investment of only$1 a square foot in aSealMaster coating foran asphalt or concretesurface can extend itslife and serviceability foras (many) as 10 years, whereas replacementcould cost as much as $10a square foot. Ongoingmaintenance can pre-serve pavement indefi-nitely,” Higgins said.

“We provide sealantservices to both residen-tial and commercial cus-tomers and are seeing agrowing awareness ofthe need to maintainexisting surfaces ratherthan face a far more

expensive ‘rip andreplace’ project down theroad. Individuals andbusinesses alike are con-cerned with economizingand avoiding liability.Sealing surfaces we driveand walk on every day is

both a good invest-ment and a ‘green’decision, because ademolished concreteor asphalt surfacewill end up in ouralready overtaxedlandfill.” He addedthat the sealants heuses are environmen-

tally safe, water-basedproducts.

“If a parking area isbeginning to show signsof wear and tear, whichcould show up as early asthree years after it waslaid, depending on the

amount of use, weencourage home andbusiness owners, build-ing managers and main-tenance companies tocontact us for a free on-site estimate before seri-ous cracking or erosiontakes place. Water infil-tration is very destruc-tive and will acceleratethe failure of the sur-face.”

Higgins pointed outthat no job is too big ortoo small for Seal Pros. When the project is aparking lot or garage foran apartment building, townhouse complex, school, hospital or shop-ping mall, Seal Pros pro-vides a timetable andcost estimate, inclusiveof the striping for stallsand directional mark-ings. The company alsowill schedule the workfor nights and weekendsif necessary. Setting timefor the sealant is about24 hours.

Seal Pros can also sig-nificantly enhance theappearance of a drive-way, parking area orsportscourt with a vari-ety of colors producedby adding pigment to thesealants. Higgins said themost popular are Terra-cotta, Brownstone, Saha-ra Beige, Brickyard Red,Forest Green and Gray-stone.

In addition to pavementsealing, Seal Pros offers acomplete range of pavingand surfacing services, including cracked ceilingand asphalt repair. Thecompany stands by itswork and offers war-ranties and maintenancecontracts covering peri-odic in-spections.

Points for styling your bedThe style and color of your bed are

entirely up to you. The bed is the focalpoint of the bedroom, having a largeimpact on its overall tone and energy. Useit to your advantage and choose blankets, sheets and pillows that resonate with you.

Choose designs that bringthe essence of nature intoyour home, or use colorssuch as sage or other earthtones to infuse the roomwith the energy of calm-ness and stability.

To perk up the romanceenergy in your life, incor-porate some fire colors byusing various shades ofpink, burgundy, purple orcoral. Buy new sheets and

refresh the energy.

Bed tips

• Although convenient, beds with storagedrawers invite clutter, and sleeping on topof the cluttered energy is ill-advised. If youhave storage under your bed, use it to store

pillows, blankets and sleep related items.• Waterbeds are never considered goodfeng shui. Keep excessive water and largesymbols of water out of the bedroom.Water represents emotions, and too muchwater in the bedroom creates emotionaland relationship instability.

• Avoid placing your bed under heavyobjects or shelves. They create potentialhazards that interrupt your feelings ofsafety and security while you are sleep-ing.

• Choose a bed that takes up no more thanthirty percent of the floor space. Any big-ger and the room will feel instantly clut-tered. If you have no alternative, makesure you keep other items in the room toa minimum to avoid overwhelm.

• Feng shui takes into account predeces-sor energy (the previous owners’ “vibe”).Never bring other people’s problems intoyour sleep space. Avoid using a second-hand bed, bedframe or mattress, unlessyou know its origins are positive.

ClosingWaking up mentally drained each day

has a lot to do with your emotional statebefore and during sleep. Take small stepsto improve the quality of your bed. If youcontinue to wake up each morning feelingtired, consider a new bed. A feng shui-positive bed is one of the most importantpurchases you can make for your ownwell-being.
