Iget some of my bestinspiration from thegreat outdoors.

Whether it’s the shade of aflower, the pattern on aleaf or the texture of astrip of bark, I’m a big fanof Mother Nature. So I was particularly

energized when Jane andMark asked me to work ona project for them. Thecouple and their threechildren live in a lovelyurban house by the lake, and all of them love theoutdoors.Their open-concept

home has a great casualvibe, with a sandy-beachfeeling. Their walkoutbasement, however, wasanother story — it hadbecome a dumping groundfor old furniture andcastoffs. Jane and Markneeded more space andwanted to turn the unusedlower level into a multi-purpose family room. They just didn’t knowwhere to start. One of the most com-

mon questions I hearabout design: “Where do Istart?” The answer: “Startwith what you love.”Since Jane and Mark

love the beach, I decidedto use a natural designapproach to bring harmo-ny and function to theirbasement, with a rustic, earthy feel. So I chose agorgeous coastal palette ofwarm woods, deep

browns, rich blues andpebbled grays.I started by painting the

walls a soft, warm gray.We tore up the old broad-loom carpet and replacedit with a cork flooring witha wind-swept texture. This was a family room

that had to function onthree levels. Mark andJane wanted a kitchen areato handle holiday over-flow and summer barbe-cues. They also wanted a

mudroom space for thekids’ sports gear. And allof them wanted a loungewhere they could watchTV.My challenge was to

create three differentzones in the one space andtie them together.Off to one side I created

a U-shaped compactkitchen area and installeda long gray countertopwith a beautiful deep sink,a built-in microwave, lots

of Shaker-style cabinetryand a stunning backsplashof glass and stone tile. Ialso brought in a full-sizedfridge/freezer combo, anoven and created an eatingarea with counter stools.Next to the kitchen I

placed the new mudroomthat leads out to the back-yard. I added a built-inbench along the wall andtall storage cabinets toconceal shoes, boots and

Left untreated, asphalt pave-ment will deteriorate rapidly. The asphalt binder that holds

the pavement together begins tooxidize and weather soon afterinstallation. Moisture penetrates theasphalt causing further damage anddeterioration to the pavement. One of the major ways moisture

penetrates asphalt is through fatiguecracking. This condition occurs inareas subjected to repeated trafficloadings (wheel paths) and charac-teristically leaves the roadway in achicken wire or alligator pattern. This cracking allows water into thepavement and causes the surface tobreak down, eventually forming apothole. Potholes are bowl-shapedholes of various sizes in the pave-ment surface. Do not wait to fix potholes and

other areas that are cracking. Theseareas of damaged asphalt can easilydouble within a one-year period. When problem areas arise, Walker-Moody Construction can patch and

fill these areas to extend the life ofyour pavement. Once moisture isprevented from penetrating theasphalt, this also is an ideal time tosealcoat the surface and prevent de-raveling.The best fix for fatigue cracking

and potholes is a hot asphalt patch. For areas with fatigue cracking, hereis what you will need to do: One, cutenough asphalt so the hole is about2 inches deep; two, clean the patcharea so that all loose debris isremoved; three, spray tack coat inthe patch area and around the edges,

which acts like a glue and binds thehot asphalt to the current surface;and four, place hot asphalt in thehole and compact. A cheaper solution to removing

and replacing is crackfilling. Forcrackfilling, you need to clean theloose debris and make sure the sur-face is dry. Apply a hot crack fillersuch as CrackMaster PL (flexibleparking lot formula), and open thearea for vehicular traffic within fiveminutes. For a free estimate, contact

Walker-Moody Construction, anauthorized installer of SealMasterHawaii, at 839-2781. The companywill come out and review yourproperty, measure the asphalt foraccuracy, provide recommenda-tions in a formal proposal, anddeliver your project on-time andon-budget. Whether you want a quick fix or

a long-term solution, give theseprofessionals a call because theycan fix it all.

By now, people havecome to realize thatHawaii Home Expo

(HHE) is a simple one-stopshop for nearly all of theirrenovation needs. Tospruce up the look of theiroutdoors, customers knowthey can get pool tiles, stone or tiles perfect foroutdoor use, Jacuzzi andswim spas, river rocks oreven outdoor grills. Forhome interiors, people haveflocked to the companyshowroom to view toilets, kitchen and bath fixtures, stones and tiles for flooring, granite or quartz counter-tops, decorative glassmosaics, and even cabi-netry.

Recently, they’ve cometo know HHE for provid-ing green solutions aswell, offering photovoltaicsystems and LED lightingsolutions that complementthe low-water usage fix-tures and TOTO toilets. But now, HHE has addedone more thing to finallymake it easy and painlessto move forward with therenovations homeownersalways have wanted.

Financing. A brand new kitchen or

stone flooring through thehome adds value, but it

does take a bit of capital. Aphotovoltaic system willcut down an electric billtremendously, but there isa significant upfrontexpense to own a system.

Now, HHE has turnedthe tables to favor the con-sumer. Clients can get aloan amortized over fiveyears with the first twoyears interest free. Afterthe first two years, the

interest rate becomes 5.99percent for the three-yearperiod (or less than 2 per-cent per year). The bestpart is there are no earlyrepayment fees so if theloan is paid at the end oftwo years, there is effec-tively no interest charged. This is especially effectivewhen used for a photo-voltaic system, becausethe money saved on stateand federal tax credits canbe used to pay down theloan quickly.

But if clients want tosplurge on something a lit-tle more fun, such as a lux-urious Jacuzzi, the staff atHawaii Home Expo will bemore than happy to helpthem out.

Lighthouse Solar has made greatstrides toward being “part of thesolution” since its inception in

2006. In a span of only five years, thecompany has become one of the largestsolar- and photovoltaic-energy installersin the nation, with 14 locations coast-to-coast as well as its own brand of cutting-edge solar energy panels.Impressed with Lighthouse Solar’s

high business standards and environ-mentally friendly practices, Mark Kelleydecided to open a franchise of his own inOctober 2009 as a way to help Hawaiihomeowners save some of their hard-earned money.“Living in the state with the highest

energy costs in the country, I felt thathelping people save money on energycosts, as well as reducing our dependen-cy on imported oil, was the perfect rea-son to open up a local franchise,”explained Kelley, franchise owner/oper-ator. “With rising energy costs and thecost of electricity here in the state of

Hawaii, there’s large financial savingsavailable to both residential and com-mercial customers.”Besides helping reduce customers’

electric bills, Lighthouse Solar saves cus-tomers the headache that often comeswith home improvement projects byoperating under a vertically integratedbusiness model.“We focus on all aspects of solar indus-

try, from design and manufacturing, totechnical sales, system design and sys-tem installation,” said Kelley. That means no middle-men. Instead,

every customer receives individualizedservice from start to finish, thanks to astaff of highly trained technical salesengineers, who are all certified by NAB-CEP (the North American Board ofCertified Energy Practitioners), the “goldstandard” for PV and solar thermalinstallation certification.“We collectively have more than 40

years’ experience in the solar energyindustry,” noted Kelley, “and we are fullybonded and insured.”In addition to its outstanding customer

service, Lighthouse Solar remains aninnovator in solar electric systems, thanks to its own brand of solar energypanels called Lumos (www.lumos.com),which are much more durable, energy-efficient, cost-effective and modern indesign than traditional panels.“Our panels rate among the highest

quality in the world and are warrantiedfor 25 years,” Kelley said. “And becausewe manufacture our own solar panels,we are able to pass on our savings on

materials to our customers.“In this competitive solar marketplace,

Lighthouse Solar has the advantage ofbeing able to save customers a greatamount of money because of our panels,”he adds. “Customers always are sur-prised at the large savings available.”As if that weren’t enough, every

Lighthouse Solar system includes aLimited Lifetime WorkmanshipWarranty and the revolutionary

at HHF for the month of October

With the holidayseason comingup fast and plans

for entertaining guestsalready in progress, it maybe time to schedule thatpainting job you’ve beenputting off.

“People usually wanttheir home to look its bestfor the holidays,” said TedWexler, owner of IslandBudget Painting. “And anew paint job is a goodplace to start. When welook at the same wallsdaily, we often don’t noticethat paint has becomedingy or blotchy.Sometimes just repaintingthe same surface in thesame color can make aworld of difference … ornew trim color could beadded to give a room anew look.

“Whatever the home-owner’s decision, it’s agood idea to get started

before adding decorationsor new furniture. So, if ajob needs to be completedbefore Thanksgiving orChristmas, it should bescheduled as soon as pos-sible.

“It’s never a good idea towait until the last minuteto schedule a job if youwant the best service andhighest quality workman-ship. However, if someonecalls us at the last minute,we do our best to meettheir needs. And we canusually find a way to fitthem in since we have alarge crew … and we donot escalate prices justbecause we’re busy. But itworks better for everyone

if we can plan ahead andspend some time with theclient inspecting the homeand choosing colors.”

Wexler noted that, insome cases, preliminaryinspections uncover ter-mite damage or rot, whichIsland Budget Painting hasthe capability to repair, since the company crewincludes skilled carpen-ters. If the job is an interi-or, wall paper removal ordry wall, work may also beinvolved and can be han-dled “in house.”

Wexler, a licensed, bond-ed contractor who has beenin the business for morethan 30 years, noted that apainter who shows up at ajobsite for the first time andimmediately begins paint-ing may not be the bestchoice. Wexler has hadconsiderable experienceover the years with struc-tures that were not proper-

ly prepped by the previouspainter, with peeling andcracking as the result.

“Once I meet the clientat the jobsite, whether aresidential or commercialproject, I evaluate the con-dition of the surfaces andprovide a proposal thatmay only cover painting, ifthat’s all that’s needed. However, I will also notethe cost of prep work torestore the integrity of thewood or masonry. A goodpaint job not only lasts, italso protects and prolongsthe life of the building.”

Wexler is a specialist incolor selection and canassist clients in makingchoices and matching

existing colors or furnish-ings, as well as advise onthe best products for thejob by taking into accountfactors such as weatherconditions in the area. Hiscrew is experienced inworking with difficult job-

sites requiring scaffoldingand operating within theparameters set by condo-miniums effecting access, parking, and times thatwork can be performed.

Just as matching food withthe right wine can elevate asimple meal to the level of a

culinary experience, artfullypairing design elements in yourkitchen can turn a utilitarianroom into a chef’s paradise.Just as you would seek wine

selection advice from a sommeli-er, it pays to get some design pair-ing tips from a kitchen expert.Diana Schrage, senior interiordesigner at the Kohler DesignCenter, offers these tips for mak-

ing successful design pairingdecisions for your kitchen:

Sinks and faucets“The experience of cooking in

a kitchen where function andbeauty are paramount can be asdelightful as the gourmet mealitself,” Schrage says. “Think ofthis when beginning yourkitchen redesign.”You may already have a sink

or a faucet in mind and can useeither piece as your starting

point. Identify what it is aboutthis particular sink or faucet thatappeals to you so the directionof your redesign becomes clear-er and clearer. If your faucet preference runs

toward sleek, modern lines, you’ll want to pair it with a sinkthat complements that designaesthetic such as stainless steelor a contemporary-looking andunde-mounted cast iron prod-uct. If you love the farmhouse-classic apron front sink, consid-er a nostalgic faucet designevocative of this time period;perhaps even a wall mountinstead of deck mount faucet.Color and finish also are key

considerations for sink and

faucet pairings. Will the color ofyour sink complement the finishof the faucet? Some sink finish-es, like stainless, or enameledcast iron, will allow more flexi-bility when choosing a faucet togo with it.

Cabinets and countertopsDesign harmony also is

important when you’re match-ing countertops and cabinets. You may have always loved thelook of stainless steel, but ifyour cabinets are clearly coun-try, the warm colors and solidlooks of a cast iron sink may bea better fit.If you have the luxury of

choosing both elements to

match, your design job will beeasier. But if you’re committedto the cabinets you already have, then consider countertop mate-rials that are timeless and uni-versal, like granite or marble.Even if the design of your cabi-nets ties you into a specificmaterial choice, rememberyou’ll have plenty of coloroptions available. If your countertop and/or

cabinet choice makes a bolddesign statement, avoid pairingit with distracting wall or floor-ing choices. A neutral backdroplike cream walls or gray slatefloor tile can give countertopsand cabinets the room they needto really pop.

Artful design pairings create culinary paradise in your kitchen

ings. “Our market is residential andmid-level. Not upscale houses withrare and ultra-pricy roofing materi-als, but average, middle-classhomes,” explained ClintonMurakami, the founder’s oldest son,who now owns the business. Careful growth and a thorough

knowledge of his targeted markethave served Murakami well. Toensure consistent quality, he’s selec-tive about the jobs he bids. “(WhenI look at a project) I ask myself, ‘Canwe do a good job for this person? Can I walk away at the end of theday, confident that I’m going toserve them well?’” he said. “If I can’t,I’d just rather not do it.”In a shaky economy, turning away

customers might seem counterintu-itive, but Murakami says business isbooming. Between roofing jobs andhis small heavy equipment rentalsideline, his team of a dozen menstays busy. The rental sidelinemakes machines like mini-excava-tors and earth-moving equipmentavailable to contractors and home-owners who need smaller machinesfor jobs on Hawaii’s smaller lots.Murakami is delighted by his latestpurchase, a miniature JCB backhoe-loader.

“Imagine if somebody took ashrinking ray and shrunk a backhoedown to the size of a Toyota sedan!”he said. “You can dig a trench withthe backhoe, and there’s a big scoop-er bucket on the front end. Becauseit’s so little, you can actually maneu-ver it around small residential prop-erties.”An embrace of technology has

also helped this small companythrive. The foremen and drivers onMurakami’s team carrySmartPhones to help with estimatesand scheduling; they use the phonesto capture photos and videos thatillustrate potential problems. Hiscrew now installs 100 percent syn-

thetic felt paper under shingles, instead of old-school tarpaper. “It’s10 times lighter and 10 timesstronger,” he says. “A lot of roofersdon’t use it because of the cost, butit’s better quality for our customers, and safer for my men because it’slighter.” The late Joseph Cyril Bamford,

founder of the company that manu-factured Murakami’s awesome newbackhoe, had a well-known businessprinciple: “Focus on what you dobest, be innovative, and re-invest inproduct development and the latestmanufacturing technologies.” It’s a philosophy that Clint

Murakami would likely admire.

Americans arespending moretime than ever at

home with family andfriends.

Eighty percent of con-sumers say they are enter-taining at home thesedays, according to newresearch from the NPDGroup, a consumer marketresearch company.

And alongside this new-found enjoyment of theirhomes, families are redis-covering an appreciationfor home décor thatenhances their livingspaces without bustingtheir budgets.

There are several newtrends in home décor thatcan cost-effectively livenup your living spaces.

Serve & Protect There’s nothing better

than chowing down withthe family while watchinga good movie. And whileyou want to preserve thatexpensive couch fromfood stains and pet hair, you know Grandma’s plas-tic couch covers are a seri-ous fashion faux pas.

Fortunately, you cannow get quilted suededfurniture covers that addextra cushion to your sofa, loveseat or favorite chairwhile preventing spillsfrom reaching the uphol-stery. Best of all, such cov-ers are machine-washable.

Go Black Always been an admirer

of sleek high-end furni-ture, but constrained by alow-end budget? Youdon’t necessarily have tosacrifice fashion for price. There now are manyaffordable options, such asThe Lakeside Collection’sdark-hued EspressoFurniture set that lets youhave a living space that

looks like it was pluckedfrom a design magazine, but without the heftyprices.

And if you’re like mostAmericans and use oneroom as a living, eatingand entertaining space, consider Ladder ShelfStorage. These five-tiershelves can store and dis-play many householditems, like books, DVDs,board games, photo

frames, collectibles —even wine! You can mixand match shelves to suityour needs.

Wrought Iron A popular trend this

year is the use of wroughtiron as accent pieces inhomes. Try spicing up adrab wall with a scrolledmetal wall medallion. Thegraceful curves and simpledesign produce a calming

effect. Or add a littlevintage flair to a bed-room with a vintagedress form in the shapeof a woman. Drape itwith fabrics and jewel-ry for extra panache.

Creative Storage Cramped for space?

Some trendy additionscan help you conservespace and organizeyour most frequentlyused items. For exam-ple, the hanging jewel-ry organizer fromLakeside.com has 72see-through pouchesfor earrings, necklacesand bracelets andhangs in your closet, allowing you to quick-ly get what you need.

And if you’re all outof bedrooms for visit-ing relatives, try turn-ing a spare room into alivable space withmetal storage solution

racks. Consider a clothesorganizer that features ahanging rod, shelves forshoes, socks and acces-sories, and a top shelf forhats, sweaters and more.

For more décor ideasthat save space and addcharacter, visit www.lakeside.com.

A little design sensibilitycan help you decorate yourhome to your liking with-out hurting your wallet.

other items. I chose a lovely autumn slate for the mud-room floor, which not only can take heavy traffic butfits in well with my nature-inspired theme. On the other side of the basement, I created the

media room, which includes a charcoal-colored comfysectional, a mid-tone zebra-wood coffee table and arustic aged leather chair. I had fun creating additionalseating by adding a few rocklike stools. They look likethe real thing, but are actually made of wool so they’resoft and comfortable.

In front of the sectional there’s a big, new flat-screentelevision flanked by floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. Butwhat gives the whole space visual punch is a huge, stunning graphic photo mural of a rustic beach scenethat I had installed on the wall beside the sofa.Throw in more artwork, lovely baskets, lamps and

other accessories, and this beach-inspired familyretreat was finally ready. Using a palette of seaside col-ors, textures and materials, I transformed Jane andMark’s basement from dark and scary to light and airy— simply by going back to nature.

There are three main methods for wood flooring installation--nailing, gluing, and floating. Best method for you depends onwhat you are installing and your type of subfloor. If going overconcrete, you can glue down (after sealing slab with a vaporbarrier) or do a floating install with engineered wood (glueboards together but not to the subfloor). For wood subfloors, you would usually nail but can also glue or float, depending onmaterial used and budget. Learn more at our seminar nextweek! Aloha, Shirley.

Hawaii has the largest number of “flatroofs” per capita in the nation, andalong with those flat roofs comes the

nuisance of ponding water conditions.Ponding water is responsible for more

damage to flat- or low-sloped roofs than anyother roofing condition. It creates unneededstress on any structure, and we all know thatit’s just a matter of time before that waterfinds its way into the building, causing costlyrepairs and other issues. Traditionally speaking, ponding water has

been the Achilles’ heel of all acrylic systems.Even the best fabric-reinforced systems haveexperienced long-term trouble with pondingwater — depending, of course, on how longand how deep the ponded water is. Somemanufacturers even exclude ponding waterfrom their warranties. Well, worry no longer. With the installa-

tion of Roof Slope, ponding water can beeliminated from the equation in one quickand easy step. Those unsightly “bird baths”or small areas where water and dirt collectcan be filled with Roof Slope as well, leavingyour roof to stay as white as the day is wasapplied.Roof Slope is a durable, water-proof, poly-

mer-rich cementiciousmaterial that can be used as astand-alone repair, or can be applied prior tothe application of your White Lava orTropical Roofshield reflective water-proof-ing systems, as well as traditional roofing sys-

tems. The material is designed to create aux-iliary slope over various roofing membranesand materials to divert water flow to drains, scuppers or an outside edge. It’s a quick andeasy way to fill low spots in flat roofs andachieve positive slope to aid in properdrainage. Roof Slope provides a durable finish that

has the ability to incorporate the appropriatecolored roofing granules to match the exist-ing roofing composition when used as astand-alone repair.Roof Slope is approved by most major

roofing manufacturers for use as a levelingmaterial before installing a new roof toeliminate ponding water. It can also beapplied on top of almost any type of roofing. Roof Slope can be used over a variety of

substrates outside of roofing, such as a deckor walkway. It can be used to create positiveslope on almost any surface that may bebucking water. As always, this simple, effective and afford-

able solution is brought to you by the water-proofing experts at All Weather SurfacesHawaii. For more information, call 487-3043 or visit
