Do you have to sac-rifice style whenyou have kids? It’s

an age-old design ques-tion many parents ask —and my clients, Nicoleand Trevor, are noexception. The youngcouple live in a charminghouse with their twosmall children, but whenI met them they were upto their ears in diapersand teddy bears. The couple spent a

good deal of time in alarge living/dining roomthat was disorganizedand uninspiring, but theydidn’t know how to

improve it. They longedfor a stylish, adult spacewhere they could relaxand entertain, but alsoneeded a place that couldweather juice boxes andmuddy sneakers. Now, I know a thing or

two about managingcrayons, sticky, choco-late-pudding fingers —and the occasional baby-food spit-up. So, I happilycalled in my crew andgeared up to give Nicoleand Trevor a kid-proof

space with a cool, indus-trial, “grown-up” vibe. The secret to this type

of makeover centersaround the principle ofindestructible design —blending form and func-tion in ways that ensurematerials, fabrics and fur-nishings are durable andchic. With this in mind, Ichose a variety of stylish, hardworking elementsfor the redesign. Thingslike raked wood, impene-trable stone and smudge-proof metal fit well withmy design.I began by painting

We all know howimportant it isfor us to con-

serve our naturalresources and protect theenvironment. This isespecially true when youthink about the limitedamount of land we haveliving on an island. Yet,when large appliances, hot water heaters andsolar panels wear out, wehave no recourse but toadd to our landfills. And

the fact is, our landfillsare filling up and we needsolutions.

Nano Tek-On directorHarald von Sydow under-stands this serious prob-lem. Always up on the lat-est technology, von

Sydow recognizes theimportance of the state’srecently passed a law thatrequires newly builthomes to include solarpanels. Solar hot water isan expensive venture andnot that old a process. Sowhy are we seeing solarpanels in the landfill?Shouldn’t they last many, many years?

“Lime scale builds upwherever water is usedand if there is heat and/orpressure exchange, itbuilds up heavier andfaster,” von Sydowexplained. “With solarpanels, lime scale attach-es to the pipes.Eventually, crusts (crys-tals) form inside thepipes and around thejoints, decreasing effi-ciency. The homeowneris now seeing his waterand electric bill going up.The crystals expand withthe heat from the sun andcontract at night whenit’s cooler. Eventually, welded places will breakand leaks will occur. Theold unit goes to the land-fill and the homeownerhas to get a new one —years before the equip-ment should be wearingout.

“With the water tankand/or hot water heater, minerals in the water —minerals are heavierthan water — sink to thebottom of the tank form-ing a paste that eventual-ly corrodes causing thetank to leak,” he contin-ued. “The tank ends upin the landfill longbefore its time.”

Is there a way to stopthis cycle and do some-

thing positive to save ouraina and the solar hotwater systems that aresaving energy and dol-lars?

This is where one of thelatest technologicaladvances, HydroFlow, plays an important role, von Sydow said.HydroFlow is a systemthat prevents the buildupof limescale inside thepipes and around thejoints, where there is thegreatest temperature andpressure exchange.

“This same technologykeeps all the water parti-cles in suspension prevent-ing minerals from settlingon the bottom of the hotwater tank,” he explained.“The HydroFlow systembreaks up deposits andcorrosion and washesthem away, and it does thisfor all the plumbing andwater-using appliances in ahome or business.”

And while this maysound expensive, vonSydow said the price is“actually quite reason-able.”

“HydroFlow can doublethe life of your hot-watersolar system, and cut yourelectricity and watercosts,” he promised.“And, we can explain howto install it yourself or wecan do it for you.”

Owning a home formost Americansmeans having a

place to raise a family andbuild a sense of stabilityand pride. Additionally, the home is the singlebest long-term invest-

ment and a primarysource of wealth andfinancial security. As thefoundation of theAmerican dream, home-ownership has long beena milestone that middle-class families strive toachieve and maintain. For more than a centu-

ry, Americans havecounted on their homesfor their children’s educa-tion, for their retirementand for their financialsecurity. According to the2007 Federal ReserveSurvey of ConsumerFinances, the median networth of a homeowner is$234,600, compared to$5,100 for renters. But as policymakers

seeking to reduce the fed-eral deficit consider elimi-nating or decreasing themortgage interest deduc-tion, it is younger, middle-class families who wouldsee their long-term finan-cial prospects significant-ly and negatively affected. Tampering with the

mortgage interest deduc-

tion would place moredownward pressure onhome prices, which wouldcause more homeownersto have mortgage balancesthat are higher than theirhomes are worth, spurmore foreclosures, and actas a further drag on thehousing and economicrecovery. Millions of exist-ing homeowners who arestruggling to make endsmeet, but still manage tostay current with theirmortgage payments, wouldface a big tax increase theycannot afford. And claims that the

deduction benefits onlywealthy taxpayers andthat only a small numberof homeowners utilize thededuction are misleading.

In reality, 70 percent ofhomeownership tax bene-fits go to middle-classhomeowners who earnless than $200,000. Andout of 75 million home-owners, 35 millionclaimed the mortgageinterest deduction in2009. This doesn’t eventake into account the mil-lions of taxpayers who arerenters and one dayaspire to own a home oftheir own, and the rough-ly 25 million who nowown their homes free andclear, but used the deduc-tion in the past. Policymakers looking

to create jobs and boosteconomic growth needlook no further than hous-ing. According to data

recently shared by eco-nomic experts at theNational Association ofHome Builders in testi-mony to Congress, build-ing 100 single-familyhomes creates more than300 full-time jobs. Learn more about the

threat to the mortgageinterest tax deduction andfind out how you can takeaction to protect it atwww.SaveMyMortgageInterestDeduction.com, orcontact Building IndustryAssociation of Hawaii:www.biahawaii.org.

With more than 20years of experi-ence in Hawaii’s

roofing and solar industry,Surface Shield Roofing’sShon Gregory has seen thebusiness change as materialsand technologies are adapt-ed to the needs and priori-ties of property owners.

“Our clients are becom-ing increasingly concernedwith rising energy costs,”Gregory said. “Traditionaltechnologies and materialsare still in use, but we’refinding that more and morepeople are looking toadvancements in roofing tohelp defray their costs.”

Because of our state’sdependence on importedoil, energy costs in Hawaiiare the highest in the U.S.,and the need to reduce theprice of cooling a home orbusiness has led to innova-tions. “The market demandsthat we work with the latestmaterials and technologies,”said Gregory, “because ourclients want to save on theirenergy costs over the longterm.”

“Cool roofing” is anapproach that has a varietyof cost and environmentalbenefits, and the number ofhome and business ownersadopting that approach is

growing rapidly. Becausesuch coatings are applied toexisting roofing substrate, demolition that sendswaste to a landfill is unnec-essary. Buildings using coolroof materials and tech-nologies can save up to 25percent on energy costs.

Roof coatings are seam-less and when installedcorrectly, can solve roofleaks on almost any typeof roof substrate. Field-applied reflective roofcoatings can extend theuseful life of nearlyevery roof  substrate, keep-ing a roof surface cool andproviding a level of pro-tection from the sun andweather. Roof coatingscan add 25-plus years  tothe service life of a roofand reduce the amount ofdiscarded roofing materi-als that end up in landfills.

“Large commercialproperties were the firstto embrace cool-roofing

technologies because ofthe size of their build-ings,” explained Gregory.“But in the past years,we’ve seen a major spikein the number of residen-tial property owners opt-ing to go with roof coatingtechnologies previouslyused mostly by the com-mercial sector.”

Surface Shield uses avariety of roof coatingproducts. Here are a fewbenefits of one of the high-ly efficient coatings useddaily by the team:

• 95 percent solidsSilicone contain no VOCs(Volatile OrganicCompounds) that willevaporate into the air.

• Silicone coatings arethe only non-sacrificialcoatings available. Othercoating systems willdegrade with UV rays fromthe sun. Silicone does not

degrade through exposureto UV rays.

• Silicone coatings arecapable of withstandingpermanent ponding waterwith no effect to the prod-uct. Because of this, sili-cone coatings can be usedto waterproof water foun-tains and man-made ponds.Ponding water will breakdown other coatings, mak-ing these soft and greatlyreducing their life span.

• Silicone coatings willnot support mold ormildew growth. Siliconewill not blacken because ofmold or mildew.

Silicone coatings arefast-drying. In tropical cli-mates, silicone is dryenough to walk on in twohours. This means multiplecoats can be applied in thesame day. Work is com-pleted sooner than withother coatings.

• Silicone will not washout. Rain, even a minuteafter application, will notcompromise silicone.

Keep your cash withthese water-saving tips

The average house-hold spends asmuch as $500 per

year on its water andsewer bill, but by makingjust a few simple changesto use water more effi-ciently, you could saveapproximately $170 peryear and help the environ-ment, according to the U.S.Environmental ProtectionAgency. From replacing ineffi-

cient appliances to takingsmall steps at home toeliminate water waste, youcan make a huge dent inyour water usage and savesome cash. Here are someeasy tips to follow:

Bathroom blundersDid you know toilets are

the single largest water-user in a home? A leaky toi-let can waste 200 gallons ofwater per day, and it isestimated that nearly 20percent of all toilets leak, reports the EPA. Slowleaks can go undetected foryears, but there is an easyway to check yours athome.Start by adding a few

drops of food coloring tothe toilet tank. If you havea leak, you’ll start to seethat color come through inthe bowl within 15 minutes.Flush immediately after

you’re done so you don’tstain the porcelain. If youcan’t fix the leak, considerpurchasing a high-efficienttoilet like the KohlerPersuade two-piece toilet. What makes this toilet

so efficient is Dual Flushtechnology, whichincludes a 1.6-gallon flushand an eco-friendly .8-gal-lon flush option. ThePersuade toilet can save asmuch as 6,000 gallons ofwater annually over a tra-ditional 1.6-gallon toilet.

Kitchen conundrumsHave a leaky faucet in

your kitchen? Accordingto the EPA, a drip rate ofjust one drip per secondcan waste more than 3,000gallons of water per year.So even if it seems like asmall leak, it could becosting you big time. Many faucets can be easilytightened and fixed toeliminate leaks — other-wise, consider installing anew WaterSense-labeledfaucet.Dishwashers can be

another huge water drain.Remember to only runloads when the dishwash-er is full, or invest in adishwasher with a half-load cycle option, likemost of the new Boschdishwashers.

If you’ve outgrown your present home— or if it’s simply outdated and nolonger suits your lifestyle — you’re

faced with a major decision: remodel, rebuild or move.“Although family wants and needs willbe primary considerations in making adecision, it will ultimately come down towhat they can afford and how the projectwill be financed,” said HomeworksConstruction CEO and founder JimByxbee, 2011 president of the BuildingIndustry Association. “With the recordlow rates currently being offered byfinancial institutions both for home equi-ty lines of credit and construction loans,it’s a great time to get started with anykind of home improvement or buildingproject.“After remodeling and building hun-dreds of new custom homes for familieson Oahu over the past 15 years, we’veseen just about every scenario, and Ibelieve we’ve been good problem solvers. We start by asking the client to tell uswhat their choice would be. If they arehappy with their present neighborhood, they will probably want a remodeledhome or a new home on the same proper-ty. In this case, we would meet with themat the home, inspect it, and give them ouropinion on the best way to proceed …some older homes may not be worth sav-ing and remodeling could end up costingmore than building a new custom homeon the site. We also acquaint them withthe applicable zoning and building codesfor the area.”Byxbee said the architect generallybrings along photos and plans of complet-ed projects to help identify the size andstyle of house that would suit their needs. As a design/build firm, Homeworks is

able to provide a free estimate for thetotal cost of planning, permits, engineer-ing, architectural design, constructionand interior finishes. If the job is arebuild, the cost of demolition would alsobe included.“A big percentage of the new homeswe’ve designed and built in older neigh-borhoods such as Kaimuki, Kapahulu,Palolo and Kalihi, as well as some of theWindward communities, have beenrebuilds for owners who didn’t want tomove. Many of these clients were secondand third generation owners who grewup in the home built by parents or grand-parents. They had long-time friends inthe neighborhood and children in localschools. Then there were a number ofinstances where the older family mem-bers owned the property outright andwere willing to finance a multigenera-tional home that their children andgrandchildren would share with them ... awin-win situation for everyone.”Byxbee explained that creating a suc-cessful multigenerational home that willaccommodate the needs of people of allages requires a degree of expertise gainedfrom experience. Access, privacy, sound-proofing, easy-to-maintain non-slip sur-faces, special bathroom and kitchen fix-tures are all factors that need to be con-sidered.Whether the project is a remodel or a

new custom home, Homeworks makes ita point to incorporate all the latest energyefficient materials and features, whichmeans savings in terms of energy con-sumption going forward. This is becom-ing an increasingly bigger factor in theequation with skyrocketing energy costs.Homeworks has won numerous awardsfor design and construction of homesranging from budget to luxury. The com-pany has consistently been ranked amongthe nation’s “Top 500” residential remod-elers by Qualified Remodeler magazine.Homeworks Construction offers free

consultations at the client’s propertyor at their offices in the HomeworksBuilding at 2111 S. Beretania St. Anyoneplanning a project is welcome toschedule an appointment for a consul-tation in the conference room or toreview finishes, fixtures and appli-ances in the Homeworks showroom bycalling 955-2777.Byxbee also invites the public to call intheir questions to his popular “Build NewOr ReDo” radio show broadcast everySaturday morning from 9 to 10 on KHVHRadio 830AM.

Quality at a great price

All painting projectsbegin the sameway — with a trip

to the hardware store orhome center to gathersupplies. But you’re goingto need much more thanpaint and a paintbrush. Asyou think about whatyou’d like to make over inyour home with paint, takethe “pain” out of paint-supply shopping withhelpful hints and tips fromcelebrity designer LisaLaPorta.

How much paint isenough? You don’t want to run

out of paint mid-project orhave gallons of a customcolor left over when yourproject’s complete. Buthow do you make sure youbuy the right amount?Simply measure the room. “It might seem like the

most obvious tip, butmeasuring the area you’repainting is an easy way tosave yourself some aggra-vation, time and money,"LaPorta said. Typically, one gallon of

paint covers 375 to 400square feet. Measure wallswith a tape measure, andmultiply the height by thewidth (in feet, not inches).“Once you have yoursquare footage calculated,

write it down and bring itwith you to the store soyou can get the rightamount of paint for eacharea. This way you’ll getwhat you need during thefirst — and only — trip.”Beware of high-contrast

color changes, like paint-ing a light wall a darkcolor, or vice versa. Thiswill likely require extracoats and, thus, morepaint. Ask your paintretailer about selecting theright primer to reduce thenumber of coats you’llneed, since it’s less expen-sive than paint, saving youmoney in the long run.

Tools of the tradeWhen you’re standing in

the aisle, cheaper isalways better, right?Wrong! In order toachieve professional-look-ing results, you need tothink — and shop — like apro. “Invest in high-quali-ty tools that deliver a per-fect finish every time, andnot the least expensiveproducts that will leavebrush marks or streaks,”LaPorta adds. “For morethan 85 years, paintingprofessionals and homeimprovement experts likeme have turned to Purdyfor the best in applicatorsand tools.”

Purdy’s new 9-inchcageless frame features a“dog-bone” design, whicheliminates skipping andthumping on the wallwhen you’re painting. You’ll feel — and see —the difference as soon asyou start rolling. “Thislightweight, durable, high-performance roller willbecome a mainstay in yourDIY painter’s kit for years, helping you finish morejobs flawlessly than if youwere to purchase inexpen-sive ‘throw-away’ setseach time you paint aspace,” LaPorta said.

Be sure to use this paint-ing supplies checklist —and a few extra tips fromLaPorta — to ensure youhave everything you needto get your project doneright, without runningback to the store in the

middle of it:

• Painter’s tape. Helps tokeep clean lines as you cutin or paint trim

• Primer. Use a primerto seal the walls so thatpaint covers smoothly andevenly

• Stir stick. Make sure toask the paint desk for stirsticks; it’s always a goodidea to stir paint and/orprimer before you begin

• Pour spout. Helps topour paint with less mess;also keeps the can cleanand label directions visible

• Roller tray and liner. You’ll need a tray to dipyour roller cover andbrush into

• Roller cover. Use ahigh-quality roller cover;for drywall or plaster, usecovers designed forsmooth/semi-smooth sur-faces

• Paint brushes.Available in various sizes, brushes help when paint-ing corners and trim;angled options performbetter for detailed work

• Drop cloths. Good toprotect your flooring, car-

pet and furniture whileyou're painting

• Screwdriver. Whenusing paint in a metal can, this helps remove the lid

“Although you won’tfind it in the aisles of thehardware or homeimprovement store, a boxof baby wipes is good tokeep handy to quicklyclean up any mistakes,”LaPorta said. “If you takethe time to do a little plan-ning before you head tothe store or start painting,it will go a long way insaving time and creating aperfectly painted space.”

a style clash betweenthese two importantkitchen design elements, seek out a sink with clas-

sic style and practicalfunctionality, such as anapron-front sink — adesign that has stood thetest of time. Until recently, adding

an apron sink meantreplacing both cabinetryand countertops. But theKohler Whitehaven self-trimming apron-frontkitchen sink solves theproblem. In addition tobeing available in a con-ventional 9-inch apronthat requires an apron-front sink base cabinet,

Are you looking for away to spruce upyour home but

don’t want to spend a bun-dle? Consider your light

bulbs and fixtures.Lighting can go a long wayin creating ambiance in ahome, and it’s often cheap-er than painting. Plus, it’smore functional thanunnecessary knick-knackscluttering your livingspaces. Here are some lighting

tips to create a welcomingatmosphere in your home:

• First impressionscount. Make your guestsfeel at home by usingfloodlights, which provideillumination across a widearea. And consider addinga light bulb dimmingswitch, which allows you

to illuminate the entry butcreates a lower level oflight to help visitors adaptto sudden changes in lightlevels when coming infrom outside. Floodlightsalso can create addeddrama in hallways, kitchens and guest rooms.

• Add color. Looking fora subtle shift in the colorof your living spaces?Light bulbs are available ina variety of color tempera-tures — from warm, softwhite to cool, natural day-light. Each changes thelook and feel of a room. You can filter out dull yel-low rays produced bystandard incandescentbulbs with CFL or halogenlights. Or use a specialincandescent light, such asGE’s Reveal bulb, to makecolors “pop,” bringing out

the vibrant colors and tex-tures of fabrics and furni-ture that would typicallygo unnoticed.

• Cozy up in thekitchen. Often a maingathering place, thekitchen should be well-litfor both cooking andentertaining. Create acozy look using recesseddownlights that also offera well-lit work surface forcreating those gourmetmeals. Place them 6 to 8feet apart for even illumi-nation.

• Let the dining roomglitter, not glare. Toachieve a welcomingambience in the diningroom, keep your chande-lier dimmed. For extrasparkle, considerinstalling small recessed

downlights on either sideof the chandelier. If yourdining room table, chinacabinet or fixtures incor-porate dull materialssuch as wood, pewter orwrought iron, coated

Reveal bulbs offer a soft-er illumination thatbrings out the textures ofthese materials. Andthey’re offered in cande-labra, globe and othershapes fitting for decora-

tive applications.

Lighting Tips To CreateHome Ambiance

Natural stone sur-faces, such as mar-ble and granite, are

porous and need to besealed to prevent stains.Impregnating sealers pene-trate into the stone surface, still allowing the stone to“breathe” while protectingagainst oil, water and othersurface stains. Sealing yourstone surface is a part ofmaintenance and depend-ing on use, the sealershould be reapplied every12-18 months.Choosing the correct

sealer depends on thestone surface. For stoneswith a textured or honedfinish, like most travertineand limestone, TenaxProtex offers superiorstain protection withoutcreating a superficial film.Protex is one of the toppremium sealers on themarket today. It is highly

effective for marble ortravertine showers wherewater protection is neces-sary. Outdoor slate and flag-

stone will often becomesun-faded, looking greyand dull. Tenax Ager sealeris a high-quality sealer thatenhances all types of stone, creating a “wet” effect, bringing out a deep richcolor. Ager also works wellon black granite, enhanc-ing the color and makingthe grey color disappear.

Stones that have a shinypolished surface are gen-erally not as absorbent asstones that are honed ortextured, but still need tobe sealed. Kitchen coun-tertops are primarily pol-ished granite. TenaxProseal is recommendedfor this type of applicationand offers protection up tofive years. Proseal fills themicroscopic pores of thestone and protects thestone from oil and waterstains, without changingthe natural color of thestone or leaving a film onthe surface.

For large stonefloor surfaces,Tenax Hydrexsealer offersp r o t e c t i o nfrom water, oil and otherstains. Hydrex sealeroperates on the surface, preventing liquids frompenetrating into the mate-rial, while still allowingthe stone to breath. It doesnot change the color of thestone and can be used onany polished stone.Hydrex works well onmarble thresholds, win-dowsills and granite coun-

tertops. It is important to pre-

vent stains before theyhappen. Keep your stonelooking as good as the dayit was installed by main-taining and sealing it year-

ly. Polished surfaces canalso be waxed, which alsogives an extra layer of pro-tection, especially againstwater spots. The friendlystaff at Island StoneCenter can assist you withyour stone maintenanceneeds, and has all stonemaintenance products instock.

Does your home feel drab or dark? Are you tired of the same oldrooms and color schemes?

There are many easy, cost-effectiveways to brighten your home’s appear-ance, cheering up its occupants in theprocess.

From fresh coats of paint to sunnylighting schemes to lively window treat-ments, small changes can have a bigimpact on your home. And some proj-ects can be tackled in just one shortweekend.

Window Treatments By literally letting more light into your

home, you can make your days morecheerful. Try replacing heavy drapes ordark-colored shades with translucentcurtains or blinds. This way, you let innatural light while keeping prying eyesat bay.

Other ways to invite natural light intoyour home include adding internal win-dows within rooms to let light flow fromone space to another, or installing sky-lights.

Energy-Efficient Accents Your lighting scheme can set different

moods in different rooms. To make aroom both cheerful and efficient, usethree different types of lighting: ambient— or background — lighting, task light-ing and accent lighting. Stylish newoptions for background lighting abound, such as pendants, chandeliers, ceiling-mounted lights and new kinds of fixturesthat can be hung in multiple ways.

LED lighting is perfect to illuminateplaces for reading, food preparation, dressing or other tasks. With a very longlifespan, such lights may never need tobe replaced and can save you money onelectricity bills because they are brighterwith lower wattage.

The latest in accent lighting includesstrings of remarkably thin LED lightpods that can easily bend around cor-ners and fit into small spaces, such asthose from manufacturers like KichlerLighting. This type of sleek, modernlighting adds drama when entertaining, while also lowering electricity costs.

“Accent lights like these use littleenergy so they can stay on all night, an

added plus for homes with small chil-dren or when overnight guests visit,”says Jeff Dross, Kichler Lighting’s cor-porate director of education and indus-try trends. “No two homes are alike, and their lighting shouldn’t be either.”

Warmth and Color Liven up rooms by selecting a bright

color scheme. Paint sets the basic tone,so choose a light color, such as invitingyellows or cheery pastels. Remember, dark colors can absorb light and makerooms darker. You can paint an entireroom a bright color or just one wall.

And you can add warmth as well ascolor by layering on pillows andthrows to accent favorite pieces of fur-niture.

For more creative home decoratingideas, visit the American Society ofInterior Designers at www.asid.org andclick on “Consumer Center.” And fornew energy-efficient home lightingideas, visit www.kichler.com.

The brighter you make your home, themore cheerful it will become for you andyour guests.

questions, “What’s in aname?”Well, when it comes to a

company, the name cansay it all, which is whyDale Domen made sure hetook great care when itcame time to pick out theperfect moniker for hissolar service business.“It’s all in the name,”

said Domen, president ofSolar Help Hawaii LLC.“And the key is the

‘Help,’” he added. “I want-ed ‘Help’ to be in it to givepeople the idea that we’renot just here to sell newsystems; we’re here tohelp people who need helpwith systems installed bysomeone else too.”Domen first realized

there was a huge gap inthe solar service industrywhen he was working atsolar panel manufacturerand wholesaler R&R SolarSupply more than 20 yearsago.“In 1990 I started in the

solar industry at R&R …and as we began wholesal-ing equipment, a lot ofhomeowners who alreadyhad solar systems wouldcome in to purchase partsto repair their systems. After the transaction, theywould ask if I knew any-one who could install it forthem,” Domen recalled.“Because the industry is

fairly new, there’s really

no training or schoolingfor (solar servicing),” hecontinued. “Some compa-nies outsource or subcon-tract the installations toother companies, some doit in-house and haveinstallation crews, but aservice department issomething that most arelacking. It takes more skillto fix an old system thanto install a new one. That, together with the fact thatthere is more profit in newinstallations causes a lot ofcompanies not to have agood service department.“On Oahu, out of the

many companies in theindustry, there are only ahandful of solar contrac-tors who actually do serv-ice and have someone whocan successfully trou-bleshoot problems with anexisting system.”Because Domen had

learned first-hand all sidesof the solar industry —from manufacturing solarpanels to their distributionand installation — he didhave the know-how inthese technical matters, and soon he found himselfoffering his assistance tocustomers-in-need after-hours.“I would feel bad for (the

homeowners) because theywould all say the samething — they would try tocall companies to serviceor repair their system andwere told that (the compa-nies) don’t do repairs, orafter making an appoint-ment no one would showup,” Domen explained.“They worked with a lot ofcontractors or companiesthat wanted to sell thenew product, but when itcame to little repairs, no

much of the wall spacea relaxing shade ofcream, and putting upgorgeous brown corkwallpaper along onewall of the adjoiningliving and dining rooms. The living area had a

big non-functioningfireplace, but its brownstucco finish made it aneyesore. So, I painted ita beautiful shade ofcream, put down somestone tiles and flanked itwith new shelving units.I wanted to install a gasinsert, but (because ofventing issues) optedinstead for a decorativelook that features can-dles, a mirror insert anda tempered glass safetyscreen.I got rid of the room’s

outmoded furniture andput in a three-piecesofa in a resilient,creamy-colored out-door fabric. I also chosea beautiful brown arm-chair, a round woodencoffee table and a dent-proof vintage steelfootlocker that will

function as a side table.I then upped the color

ante with a beautifulIkat-patterned fabricthat contains shades ofblue, green, brown andcream. The materialwas used to makedrapes for both roomsand it served as myjumping-off point forthe accent colors in thespace. I also put down arugged, multicoloredpatchwork rug that canbe trusted to hide allmanner of kid spills. In the dining room, I

installed a long, durablewhite vinyl banquettealong the cork-paperedwall. This banquettewill function as part ofthe seating for a newtable that consists ofreclaimed wood atop anindestructible steelbase.I chose cool white

dining-room chairs andtwo funky high chairsthat can later be con-verted into toddlerchairs. When choosingfurnishings for chil-dren, I look for durabil-

ity. After all, design isan investment — and ithas to grow with you.I then lightened and

brightened the roomsby putting up twoindustrial-inspired pen-dant lights above thedining-room table andtwo lamps on eitherside of the fireplace.Lastly, I added a host

of accessories — vases, artwork, accent pillows— and made sure the“breakables” were wellout of reach of curiouslittle hands. The verdict? Ignore

the naysayers. I say youcan have it all — kidsand style! By combiningresilient yet fashionablefabrics, finishes and fur-nishings, Nicole andTrevor’s space wentfrom bland to beautifuland is now ready forsplendid dinners, relax-ing evenings — and amessy tyke or two.

There’s a new kid on thecabinet-and-granitesupplier block, and its

name is Da Wing Trading,LLC.A family-owned and –oper-

ated venture, Da WingTrading opened its doors ear-lier this year at 2006Republican St., offering solidwood cabinets with plywoodboxes (no MDF, particle-board or pressed wood) andgranite countertops out of its8,000-square-foot showroom.“We own the property

where we store in-stock cabi-nets and granite, thus wedon’t have to pay rent, whichenables us to pass the savingson to our customers,” saidHarry Kwan, manager.“We sell (our products) at

affordable prices, which arethe people’s prices,” addedKwan’s uncle Tommy Chan, who works in the salesdepartment.Kwan goes on to note that

the family decided to investin the 10,000-square-footproperty rather than rentingit out because they saw it as agood long-term investmentfor future generations.Additionally, the property

has ample on-site parking, ascarcity in the industrialKalihi area.“That’s something very

important to have,” Chanstated.Though Da Wing Trading

only deals in cabinets andcountertops at the moment,Kwan explains that theycarry those made of qualitymaterials. For example, coun-tertops are made from graniteimported from China, whilecabinets are made using alderand maple woods.“These are solid woods, the

good woods,” said Chan of

the cabinets, which comestandard with soft-closehardware and are available infour different color varia-tions, including light cherry, maple, white (maple) anddark cherry (alder only).“Cabinets and countertops

go hand-in-hand,” Kwan said.“We chose to focus on gran-ite for countertops because itis a unique, sturdy, naturalrock, and a high-quality addi-tion that can enhance thelook and feel of a kitchen orbathroom.”And for home-improvers

looking for a little advice ontheir next kitchen or bathrenovation, Da WingTrading’s staff of profession-als — which, in addition toKwan and Chan, includesKwan’s father, Yue FungKwan, and cousin Josh Guan— is ready to help. Just bringa rough draft or sketch ofwhat you want and the meas-urements of the space, andKwan says they can come upwith a free design and quotefor what you’ll need.“We are hands-on in help-

ing our customers,” Kwansaid. “We help the customersdesign their kitchen and bath-rooms and work with theirbudget and needs.“Customer service is our

main concern, and since weown the property, we will behere for a long time to serviceour customers.”Da Wing Trading operates
